The Cubs have reached 93 wins this season, already a 20-win improvement from a year ago (73-89) the 20-win uptick is the best improvement in all of baseball this season and the best by a Cubs team year-over-year since a 21-win increase from 2002 (67 victories) to 2003 (88 victories). The Cubs finished 19-9 in September to match their 19-9 record in August the Cubs won 19 or more games in consecutive calendar months for the first time since 1977 when the Cubs won 21 games in May and 19 games in June. After today s series finale in Cincinnati (2-0), the Cubs move on to Milwaukee to start a three-game series tomorrow, the final stop of their two-city, six-game road trip to close out the regular season. A SEPTEMBER TO REMEMBER: With their 19-9 mark in September, the Cubs completed the month with the best record in the majors the Cubs won 19 games in September for the first time since 2003 (19-8) and for only the second time in the last 70 seasons starting in 1946 the Cubs had the best record in the N.L. in September for the first time since 2003 and had the best record in the majors in September for the first time since 1945 (22-10,.688). The N.L. Pitcher of the Month for August, Jake Arrieta followed up by going 4-0 with a 0.45 ERA (2 ER/40.0 IP) in five starts in September, allowing only 20 hits and issuing just four walks with 39 strikeouts in 40.0 innings. Arrieta s 0.45 ERA last month is the lowest by any pitcher within the month of September since Minnesota s Johan Santana turned in an identical 0.45 ERA (2 ER/40.0 IP) in 2004 the last N.L. pitcher to post an ERA of 0.45 or lower in September was Greg Maddux in 1995 with a 0.29 ERA (1 ER/31.0 IP) both Santana and Maddux went on to win their league s Cy Young Award. Starlin Castro led the majors with a.426 batting average (29-for-68) in September, while Kris Bryant tied for third in the N.L. with 36 hits last month. Bryant s 36 hits are the most by a Cubs rookie in September since Shawon Dunston had 37 in 1985, while Bryant s 19 RBI last month are second most for a Cubs rookie in September in franchise history (Ray Grimes, 22 RBI, 1921). THIS IS ON THE RECORD: With 93 victories, the Cubs have reached 90 wins in a season for the 23rd time in franchise history, and for the first time since going 97-64 in 2008 at 93-65 (.589), the Cubs have the third-best record in the majors in the last 75 years, the Cubs have finished with a better winning percentage three times (1945: 98-56,.636; 2008: 97-64,.602; 1984: 96-65,.596). The Cubs have gone 42-19 in their last 61 games starting July 27, the day after enduring a three-game sweep to the Phillies at Wrigley Field Chicago s 42 wins are tied with Toronto for most in the majors in this span. At 19-9 in September/October with four games to go, the Cubs are guaranteed to finish the final month of the season above.500, marking the first time the Cubs have gone.500 or better in every calendar month of the season since 2008. Wild Card game on Wednesday, October 7 this marks the 17th season Chicago has advanced to post-season play, with the team most previously making the playoffs in 2003 (advanced to NLCS), 2007 (NLDS) and 2008 (NLDS). Joe Maddon will make his fifth post-season appearance as a manager, having taken Tampa Bay to the playoffs in 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2013 he is the first Cubs manager to advance to the postseason in his first year at the helm since Lou Piniella in 2007. A STRIKING OPENING SALVO: Jon Lester last night reached 32 starts for the seventh time in his career after already having surpassed 30 starts for the eighth-straight campaign he reached 200.0 innings for the fourth-straight season and the seventh time in his career. Lester struck out nine batters to finish with 207 strikeouts this season, his fourth-career 200 strikeout season and the new singleseason franchise record for punchouts by a left-handed pitcher, surpassing Ken Holtzman s 202 strikeouts in 1970. Lester finished the regular season with 21 quality starts this, one of only four National League lefties to reach that mark this year, joining Clayton Kershaw (27), Madison Bumgarner (22) and Francisco Liriano (20). HAVING A BLAST: Anthony Rizzo has 30 homers this season and, with 32 homers last year, he is just the second left-handed hitting Cub to record multiple 30-homer campaigns Billy Williams had five 30-plus homer seasons for Chicago between 1964-72. Rizzo on Tuesday was hit by his 30th pitch of the season, extending his modern day franchise record and complementing his 30 home runs this season Anthony is just the second 30-30 player in major league history, joining Don Baylor in 1986. The Cubs have nine players with double digit home runs season, establishing a new all-time franchise record. GETTING THEM IN: Kris Bryant s 99 RBI have far surpassed the club s previous all-time rookie RBI record of 86 held by Billy Williams (in 1961) and Geovany Soto (in 2008) Kris has 23 more RBI than any other rookie in all of baseball he is one RBI away from becoming the first N.L. rookie to reach 100 RBI in a season since the Nationals Ryan Zimmerman logged 110 in 2006 in addition to his 99 RBI, Bryant leads major league rookies in OBP (.369), slugging (.495) and OPS (.864) among several other categories. JAKE IS THE MAN: Jake Arrieta on Sunday improved to 21-6 and recorded his franchise-record 19th-straight quality start dating to June 21 Arrieta is 15-1 with a 0.89 ERA (14 ER/141.0 IP) with just 27 walks and 140 strikeouts in those 19 starts he has hit as many homers (2) as he has allowed (2) in this stretch. Arrieta owns a Wrigley Field scoreless streak of 40.2 innings according to Elias, the 40.2-scoreless innings streak is the longest ever by a pitcher at Wrigley Field, surpassing Bob Gibson s 37.0-scoreless innings streak in 1965-66. Arrieta is sporting a.187 opponent batting average, tops in the majors, while his 1.82 ERA is second in the majors (Zack Greinke, 1.68) Jake has a 0.80 ERA since the All-Star Break, which would be the lowest ERA after the break in major league history. Arrieta is the first Cub with at least 21 wins in a season since Fergie Jenkins went 24-13 in 1971. Arrieta is now 10-0 with a 0.44 ERA since August 1 since the majors began recording earned runs more than 100 years ago, only one other pitcher had at least 10 wins without a loss in August and September, with an ERA below 1.00 in 1992, Milwaukee s Cal Eldred went 10-0 with a 0.95 ERA from August 1-September 30.
