The American went 4-4 in eight nonconference games this week, as the league holds a 138-91 (.603) record against other conferences this season. Cincinnati, UConn and No. 12 ECU joined the Cougars in collecting a Tuesday win. The American gears up for the fifth week of conference play, starting Thursday. The American holds the fifth-best NCAA RPI ranking among the 31 Division I conferences. With ECU at No. 11 and UConn at No. 27, The American is one of six conferences (ACC, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-12 and SEC) to boast two top-30 RPI teams. Six of the conference s nine teams are top-100 RPI programs. It will be a battle between two of the top-four teams in The American, as the Pirates and Huskies square off in Greenville, N.C., this week. Both sides came out on top in their past conference series, each winning three American sets on the year. ECU bounced back from a weekend setback, completing a season series sweep of Elon with a 9-4 win on the road Tuesday night. UConn also won on the road Tuesday, holding on for a 10-7 win at UMass Amherst. The Huskies have won seven of their last 10 games. Tulane saw its six-game winning streak come to an end against New Orleans in a 15-10 loss on the road Tuesday night. It marked the 13th time this season the Green Wave scored in double digits. Kody Hoese leads the conference in eight offensive categories and is the nation s leader in home runs (19) and total bases (133). Tulane will face Memphis on the road in a three-game series starting Friday. The Tigers also look to rebound following a 5-2 loss at No. 15 Ole Miss Tuesday. Memphis held the Rebels to their second-lowest hits total (three) of the season. Coming off wins over ranked opponents, Cincinnati and Houston will put their winning streaks on the line this weekend when the Cougars welcome the Bearcats to Schroeder Park for a three-game American series. Houston has won five-straight games after taking down No. 7 Texas A&M 4-1 Tuesday night. The Bearcats have won three in a row after avenging a loss from last Wednesday with a 15-5 victory over No. 28 Miami (Ohio). Starting the season 1-9, Cincinnati has won seven of its last 10 games to move into third place in American standings with UConn. UCF and Wichita State will look to get back on track, as the Knights make the trek to Wichita for a three-game set. UCF fell 5-3 against Florida Atlantic Tuesday night, as the Shockers look to snap a six-game slide. The two clubs meet in a series for just the second time, as UCF took two of three in last year s inaugural meeting. USF also looks to rebound this weekend when it hosts The Citadel for a three-game series outside of conference play. Packard was additionally named to Baseball America's preseason second team. Feole earned preseason All-America status after a stellar sophomore season. Davis Demolishes Records Houston senior first baseman and designated hitter Joe Davis continues to make American Athletic Conference history at the plate. He owns the league s all-time career records in hits, RBIs, home runs, total bases and RBIs per game. Davis is a three-time American All-Conference selection and two-time conference Player of the Week. 2018 MLB Picks Wichita State's Alec Bohm (3rd overall) and USF's Shane McClanahan (31st overall) highlighted the group of 38 student-athletes drafted by the Major League Baseball in 2018. The 38 selections set a conference record, bettering last year's total of 26. All nine conference teams were represented in the draft, as Wichita State led the way with 10 picks, the third-most selections among all college programs. Furthermore, the two first-round picks are the most in conference history, as the league has seen at least one of its players get selected in the MLB first round in each of the past four seasons. A Trio of Champions Three teams have won the American Athletic Conference baseball title. Houston (2014 and 2017) and ECU (2015 and 2018) have captured two, while UConn won the title in 2016. The Cougars own the best conference tournament record with a 14-5 mark. The 2019 champion will be decided at Spectrum Field in Clearwater, Fla., in May once again. The championship will take place May 21-26. Spectrum Field, which is regarded as one of the finest minor league playing and practice facilities in the nation, has hosted the American Athletic Conference Championship since 2014 and was the site of seven Big East Championships. Spectrum Field serves as the spring training site for the Philadelphia Phillies, and it has housed the Phillies Florida State League affiliate Clearwater Threshers since the facility opened in 2004. The stadium s seating capacity is 8,500. The outfield dimensions measure 329 feet down the left field line, 408 feet to center, and 330 down the right field line. The $25 million facility features a 360-degree main concourse, grass berm seating, group picnic areas, a children s play area and a state-of-the-art video scoreboard. In addition to a major-league quality playing field, the facility also houses the Carpenter Complex an adjacent four-diamond practice complex, which allows teams to take full-field batting practice while a game is taking place in the stadium. Eight teams will qualify for the 2019 American Athletic Conference Championship, which will utilize a double elimination format in two brackets, leading up to the May 26 final. Three teams have won The American title. Houston (2014 and 2017) and ECU (2015 and 2018) captured two championships, while UConn won the title in 2016. 6 2019 American Athletic Conference Baseball
