Rule 1: Players, Playing Area, & Equipment Section 1: Team A. All players must check in with an Supervisor and present their MSU Student Identification card to participate. B. A maximum of 8 players will compete on a side; 4 in each canoe and 1 guide. C. Leagues are Men s, Women s, and Co-Rec. Section 2: The Playing Area The game is played indoors at the Sanderson Center in the shallow end of the pool. Section 3: Boundaries A. Lane lines will mark all four sides in the shallow end. B. Loading zones will be on opposite end of the pool outside the lane lines. Section 4: Equipment A. Canoes will be provided by the Recreational Sports department. B. Each player may have either one bucket or one shield of any size inside the canoe. Shape, size, and material of the shield are left up to the teams. Note: The Supervisors on duty do have the right to deny a bucket or shield if they deem it unusable, unfair, or unsafe. C. Participants must wear proper swim wear. Participants may wear t-shirts or any athletic clothing over bathing suits. D. Boat shoes or sandals are permitted and recommended E. Protective eye wear is strongly recommended for those that wear contacts F. Players may not wear: a. Guard, cast, or brace made of unyielding leather, plaster, pliable plastic, metal, or any other hard substance, on finger, hand, wrist, or forearm b. Jewelry or hats c. Tennis shoes and boots are prohibited. Section 1: The Game Rule 2: Game Play A. Participants will climb into their respective canoes from the edge of the pool while the canoes are in the loading zones of the pool. B. Intramural Staff will survey all canoes for proper equipment and make sure all safety requirements are met. C. After canoes have been inspected, they will be spread out evenly throughout the Battle Waters of the pool. D. Supervisor will blow their whistle and the battle will begin. E. Each team will try to attack other canoes with water until their canoe is sunk, or they are the last one standing. Teams may also have one shield in their boat to fend off water from entering the boat. F. In order to move around in the pool, teams must use their hands, buckets, or shields. G. There will be three rounds of play per match. The team that finishes in 1 st place for the round will receive 5 points, the team that finishes in 2 nd place will receive 4 points, and etc. Section 2: Restrictions Teams may not: A. Stand on the edge of the canoe or cross beams at any time (players may only stand on the floor of the canoe). B. Jump out of the boat at any time during the battle. C. Guides may not hold canoe above the water. D. Physically contact any member or equipment from another team to keep them from attacking or defending. Penalty: Whistle will be blown. All participants in the canoe must fill bucket with water and dump it into their own boat. Section 3: Sunken Ship A. Once your canoe has been sunk or your team has been disqualified, you must get out of the canoe and guide it to the loading zone of the pool. B. Any attempt to hinder another team after your canoe has been sunk will result in an ejection for all players involved. Section 1: Court Monitors and Officials Rule 3: Officials and Their Duties A. All matches will be supervised by an Intramural Supervisor. B. Rules will be enforced primarily by the Intramural Supervisor. C. The Supervisor s responsibility will be to rule on any situation. A team may appeal to the Supervisor if they feel a player has violated any rule. THE SUPERVISOR S DECISION IS FINAL. D. Supervisors may warn players who display unsportsmanlike conduct. Any players receiving 2 warnings in a game will be ejected and suspended a minimum of one game. Suspensions will begin with their next scheduled game. Severe infractions or multiple technical may result in suspensions from matches or tournaments. Note: A Supervisor is not required to warn players before ending a game. Section 2: Unsportsmanlike conduct It may include, but is not limited to: A. foul language B. unnecessary roughness C. arguing with officials, staff, participants, or fans D. abuse of the honor system Section 3: Protests Protests will only be accepted in cases involving use of an ineligible player. Protests of judgment calls will not be accepted. Note: A fee of $10 will assessed to every protest. If your protest is upheld, then you will get your money back. Rule 4: Code of Conduct A. Understand, appreciate and abide by the rules of the game and the honor system. B. Respect the integrity and judgment of game officials and staff C. Respect your opponent and congratulate them in a courteous manner following each match, whether in victory or defeat. D. Be responsible for your actions and maintain self-control. E. Do not taunt or bait opponents. Refrain from using foul or abusive language. Rule 5: Sportsmanship As in all intramural sports contests, if a participant is ejected from a contest, they are immediately ineligible for further access or competition in any Recreational Sport program or facility until cleared by the Coordinator of or their designate. It is the participant's responsibility to schedule an appointment with the Coordinator of to review their behavior and subsequent eligibility to continue in the Program. Any unsportsmanlike conduct by players or fans may cause a team to be disqualified from further competition. In addition, players, coaches, and spectators may not harass the officials (verbally or physically) after the contest has ended. Offender(s) are subject to the same penalties and procedures as players being ejected from the contest. Rule 6: Injury and Health Disclaimer Participants should be aware that there is a risk of injury in participation in due to the inherent nature of the activity. Individuals are encouraged to have a physical examination and to obtain adequate health. Play at your own risk! Rules of the Game for Intramural Battleship 5
