Rankings are Inermat/TheOpenMat/WIN ON THE MAT The University of Iowa wrestling team travels to Oklahoma City to compete at the 2014 NCAA Championships on March 20-22 at Chesapeake Energy Arena. The three-day tournament begins Thursday with Session I star ng at 11 a.m. and Session II at 6 p.m. Session III and IV begin Friday at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. The medal round starts Saturday at 10 a.m., and the championship finals begin Saturday at 7 p.m. All mes are central. ESPN COVERAGE OF THE NCAA CHAMPI- ONSHIPS With all six sessions televised and every match carried on ESPN3 for the first me, ESPN will provide unprecedented coverage of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships from Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City, Okla., on March 20-22. ESPN will televise the semifinals and finals, while ESPNU televises the first and second sessions, the quarterfinals and medal round. Digitally, ESPN3 will carry individual mat feeds throughout the en re tournament and debut a special -- Inside the Mat -- during the finals. All six sessions are available on WatchESPN. DIGITAL COVERAGE ON ESPN3 ESPN3 has expanded its individual mat feed which allows fans to watch every match throughout the tournament, including the wrestleback bracket, accompanied by live commentary. Addi onally, for computer users, ESPN3 will once again offer mul -mat simultaneous viewing which allows fans to watch up to four different mats at one me. NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS OUTSTANDING WRESTLERS Ten different Hawkeyes have been named the NCAA Championships Outstanding Wrestler. They include Chuck Yagla (1976), Bruce Kinseth (1979), Jim Zalesky (1984), Barry Davis (1985), Mary Kistler (1986), Tom Brands (1992), Terry Steiner (1993), Lincoln McIlravy (1997), Joe Williams (1998) and Brent Metcalf (2008). ALL AMERICAN STREAK The Hawkeyes have crowned at least one All-American every year since 1972, a span of 42 seasons. Iowa has totaled 255 All- America honors during that stretch. The Hawkeyes have five All-Americans on this year s squad. Derek St. John is a three- me All-American and 2013 NCAA Champion. Tony Ramos placed third in 2012 and runner-up in 2013. Ethen Lo house placed seventh in 2012, and fi h in 2013. Mike Evans earned his first All-America honor with a sixth-place finish in 2013, and Bobby Telford placed fi h in 2012.

During that 40-year span, the Hawkeyes have won 23 team tles, including nine straight from 1978-86. The other schools include Oklahoma State (7), Minnesota (3), Penn State (3), Iowa State (2), Arizona State (1) and Oklahoma (1). 10 QUALIFIERS Iowa has sent at least eight athletes to the NCAA Championships in each of head coach Tom Brands eight seasons. This year marks the 18th me since 1968, and first me since 2010, that Iowa has sent its en re 10-man lineup to the na onal tournament. Iowa has won the NCAA team crown 14 mes when sending its en re 10-man lineup. DEFENDING CHAMPION DEREK ST. JOHN Derek St. John, the No. 2 seed in 2013, became the 52nd na onal champion in program history when he defeated Northwestern s Jason Welch, 3-2, in the 157-pound NCAA finals last season. St. John enters 2014 as the No. 3 seed. He is a emp ng to become the 23rd wrestler in program history to win mul ple NCAA championships. In the history of Iowa wrestling, 16 wrestlers have won two na onal crowns, while six wrestlers have won three. A Hawkeye has won back-to-back tles 15 mes, most recently in 2007-08 (Mark Perry). Iowa head coach Tom Brands won three consecu ve tles from 1990-92. BIG TEN CHAMPION TONY RAMOS Senior Tony Ramos won the 133-pound Big Ten tle March 9 at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wis. Ramos used an escape and 1:37 of riding me to defeat Wisconsin s Tyler Graff, 2-1. It was the first conference tle for Ramos. He became the 110th Big Ten champion in school history, and the 11th Big Ten champion under head coach Tom Brands. MAKE IT A DOUBLE Tony Ramos is going for the single-season championship sweep in Oklahoma City. Since 1928, when Leslie Beers won the Big Ten and NCAA tle, a Hawkeye has pulled off the single-season championship sweep 60 mes, most recently in 2012, when Ma McDonough won both the 125-pound conference and na onal championship. Iowa head coach Tom Brands won both tles in 1991 and 1992. Iowa associate head coach Terry Brands won both tles in 1990 and 1992. 4X ALL AMERICAN Senior Derek St. John enters the 2014 NCAA Championship with a chance to become the 18th Hawkeye wrestler to earn four All-America honors. He is currently of 32 three- me All-Americans. St. John placed fourth in 2011, second in 2012, and first in 2013. Mark Perry was the last Hawkeye to enter the four- me All-American club (2005-08). Head coach Tom Brands is one of 17 current members (1989-92). NO. 24 WOULD BE NO. 2 The Hawkeyes have won 23 NCAA team tles, but among those championships seasons, only the 1999 Hawkeyes can say they won the team tle without also capturing the Big Ten tournament championship in the same season. The 1999 team lost to Minnesota (139-121) at the conference tournament, but flipped the score and won the NCAA tle by two points over the second-place Gophers two weeks later (100.5-98.5). Sophomores Doug Schwab and T.J. Williams each won their first na onal tles that season, while sophomore Eric Juergens, and seniors Lee Fullhart and Jamie Heidt earned All-America honors.

A 1996 Olympic gold medalist and member of wrestling s Hall of Fame, Brands is only the eighth wrestling coach at the University of Iowa. The former Hawkeye wrestler was a four-time All-American and three-time national champion (1989-92) at Iowa. He has a 146-15-1 (.904) overall and 58-6 (.906) Big Ten coaching record at Iowa, and a 163-35-1 (.822) career mark. Now in his eighth year as Iowa s head coach, Brands has led the Hawkeyes to three NCAA and Big Ten team titles, crowning eight NCAA champions, 11 Big Ten champions and 38 All-Americans. Iowa has honored 53 academic all-big Ten honorees, including a schoolrecord 12 in 2011-12. The Hawkeyes have qualifi ed 72 wrestlers for the NCAA Championships in the last eight years, sending the entire 10-man lineup in 2009, 2010, and 2014. Iowa has also won or shared six of the last seven Big Ten regular season titles. During Brands tenure, Iowa set school records for longest dual unbeaten (84) and winning streaks (69), longest dual road unbeaten (51) and winning streaks (44), most Carver-Hawkeye Arena victories (11) and most dual shutouts (8). Iowa also made another entry in the record books, setting the then-national collegiate dual meet attendance record of 15,955 when Iowa defeated Iowa State, 20-15, on Dec. 6, 2008, at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Iowa has led the nation in attendance in each of Brands eight seasons, setting an NCAA all-time attendance average of 9,014 in 2011-12. Brands was named 2008 NWCA Coach of the Year after leading the Hawkeyes to their fi rst NCAA team title since 2000 and their fi rst Big Ten team title since 2004. He was named Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2008, 2009 and 2010, becoming the fi rst coach in conference history to earn the honor in three consecutive seasons. Brands served as head coach at Virginia Tech University for two seasons (2005-06), recording a 17-20 dual mark. In his fi rst season with the Hokies, Brands led the team to the 2005 regular season Atlantic Coast Conference title, set a school record for dual meet wins (16) and had a school-record fi ve wrestlers qualify for the NCAA Championships. During his tenure, Virginia Tech crowned fi ve ACC champions and had two All-Americans. Senior heavyweight Mike Faust was named 2006 ACC Wrestler of the Year. Prior to taking the helm at Virginia Tech, Brands was an assistant coach at Iowa for 12 seasons (1993-2004). He helped the Hawkeyes to a 177-27 dual record, seven NCAA and eight Big Ten team titles, while crowning 23 NCAA champions, 73 All-Americans and 36 Big Ten champions. He was named the National Wrestling Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year in 2000. In 2004, he was one of three coaches for the U.S. Olympic freestyle wrestling team, participating in Athens. Brands also served as assistant coach for the 2002 and 2003 U.S. Freestyle World Teams, earning Freestyle Coach of the Year honors from USA Wrestling both years. He was also a member of the U.S. coaching staff at the 2001 World Championships, and has coached a number of other U.S. teams in international competition. As a competitor, Brands won the 1996 Olympic freestyle gold medal at 136.5 pounds in Atlanta, GA. He also won a gold medal at the 1993 World Freestyle Championships in Toronto, two World Cup gold medals (1994, 1995) and was the 1995 Pan American Games champion. He won four U.S. National titles (1993-96) and made four straight U.S. World or Olympic teams (1993-96). Along with his twin brother, Terry, Tom was named 1993 USA Wrestling Athlete of the Year, the 1993 John Smith Outstanding Freestyle Wrestler, and 1993 Amateur Wrestling News Man of the Year. He was inducted into wrestling s Hall of Fame in 2001. Brands was a four-time All-American at Iowa (1989-92). During his Hawkeye career, he won three NCAA titles and was named Outstanding Wrestler of the 1992 NCAA Championships. Also a three-time Big Ten champion, Brands won 95 percent of his matches at Iowa. His career mark of 158-7-2 includes an undefeated season in 1991 (45-0). The Sheldon, Iowa, native was born April 9, 1968. He earned his B.S. degree in physical education from Iowa in 1992. He and his wife, Jeni, have three children, Madigan, Kinsee and Tommy.
