Nut ReMix Survival Guide 2014 We have a fabulous production in the works and want all of your efforts over the course of the fall to produce optimum results, so we ve put together a few reminders and instructions to make certain parents and student dancers are aware of expectations for performance week. Rehearsal and Performance Etiquette NBE expects all dancers to be well-mannered and respectful during rehearsals and performances. Please review the expectations with your child and instruct your dancer to only ask questions during rehearsals that are absolutely necessary and pertinent. Generally they may only speak when spoken to. Silliness, running around and lack of concentration during rehearsals will not be tolerated. Parents must sign in and sign out their dancer at the Cannon Center entrance at Exchange and Main. before and after each rehearsal and performance. PARENTS WILL NOT BE PERMITTED BACKSTAGE. Dancers will be expected to stay backstage and will not be allowed to roam the building or backstage area while at the Cannon Center. They must stay in their ASSIGNED dressing rooms until called. Boys may not enter the girls dressing rooms and vice versa. Parent volunteers will be assigned to the appropriate dressing rooms and will serve as room monitors in addition to helping with costumes and make-up. All dancers MUST show complete respect for any staff member or volunteer and each other. Parents and guests who are not signed up to volunteer may NOT enter the back stage area. This rule will be strictly enforced. Must-have Supplies for Dress Rehearsals and Performances (Pack these items in a bag with your dancer s name on it, write name on all supplies. Dancers are responsible for bringing their prepared bags to all dress rehearsals and performances.) Kleenex Hair brush Hairpins Hair nets Hair bands Hair spray (non-aerosol) Hair gel (for fly-aways) Make up remover wipes A cover-up to protect the costume Extra pair of tights Extra pair of ballet shoes MAKE-UP as assigned to each cast ***DO NOT SHARE EYE MAKEUP*** 1
Healthy Snacks (NO GUM). Light snacks will be provided for student dancers backstage, but these offerings are not intended to be a meal. If your child has particular food preferences or allergies, please pack accordingly. Bottled Water (NO sugary drinks or drinks with color) Activities (There will be long stretches of time in which your dancer must be entertained in his/her dressing room). Suggested activities include: coloring books with CRAYONS (not markers); laptops/tablets; portable DVD s with movies; board or card games; books and magazines; homework. 2 pairs of pink tights per dancer, except Soldiers who need white. Make-up Every dancer wears basic stage make-up which includes: concealer foundation bronzer for lighter complexions to use around hair line to avoid being washed out on stage powder brown eye shadow (Neutrogena shadow kit brown w/ highlighter, accent & base) white eye liner black eye liner mascara pink blush (mauve not brown tone) pink matte lipstick (mauve, not brown, red or glossy) eye brow pencil to match hair color to fill in eye brows and avoid being washed out on stage (blondes wear brown. All dancers need this and must use it!) Specific instructions by cast to be applied OVER the basic stage make-up base listed below. a. Mice: Use the black eyeliner to draw the black whiskers on your cheeks (over your pink blush) and a black nose (tip of nose). No black eye liner on eyes but must wear mascara and use the eye brow pencil. Hair in one high bun. b. Soldiers: We will provide the red felt circles for your cheeks. Use the black eyeliner to draw your eyelashes. Hair in one low bun you will have a hat on. c. Dolls: We will provide the red felt circles for your cheeks. You will need to use the black eyeliner to draw your eyelashes (same as soldiers). Hair in one bun (high or low depending on your costume/hat). d. Chinese: Hair in two high buns on each side of the head. Black eyeliner. e. Pollichinelles: Blue eye shadow and pink cheeks (apply to apple of cheeks). Hair in low bun (you will have a hat on with your costume). f. Ballet 5: you should have instructions from your teachers g. Ballet 6: you should have instructions from your teachers 2
Make Up Notes: There will be some parent volunteers to help with make-up, but please do come with at least your basic stage make-up done. Bun, basic stage make-up and role specific make-up videos are available in 2 locations. Please consult these videos well in advance so that you understand how to apply the specific make-up for your child s role. Parents will not be permitted back stage to apply make-up/fix hair. Volunteers will only touch up as needed. DO NOT SHARE EYE MAKEUP Costume Notes: 1. Be Careful Careful Careful with costumes. 2. No jewelry unless specified. 3. Do not eat or drink in your costume. 4. Hang costume up after performance or ask a volunteer to help you. 5. Notify a volunteer immediately if you see any problems with costume. 6. Do not remove any items belonging to NBE from the theater. 7. Dancers will have lockers to store personal items, so please send a combination lock if your child would like to leave things overnight. This may especially apply to dancers in Ballet V- VII. Dress Rehearsal and Performance Commandments Parents may park for free in the Cannon Center garage on the nights of Wednesday and Thursday (November 19 and 20). 3
Pay your performance fee. If you do not pay, your child cannot perform. NO EXCEPTIONS. Do not add anything to costumes or hair. No glitter, no body glitter, no sequins, no crystals. Your child must not wear any jewelry unless specified as costume requirements. Remove all earrings, necklaces, anklets, and piercings. EVERYTHING must be removed. Banish all fly-aways. Fly-aways are the little pieces of hair that stick out around the ears, the hairline and the nape of the neck. Glue them down if you have to. Back stage is absolutely OFF LIMITS to parents and guests. Ask all your family and friends to buy tickets, or buy tickets for them! Ticket sales are the lifeblood of the performances. DO NOT BE LATE. If the schedule says 4:00 p.m., be there at 3:50. You may have to wait an hour, but then again you may be done early. Please expect rehearsals to run a little late. Check the website for rehearsal schedule and updates. Please check it daily. NO VALUABLES AT THEATER! Respect of all props and costumes is expected. Anyone caught playing with or intentionally damaging a prop will be banned from the Cannon Center and the production. Artistic Director Katie Smythe along with the Stage Manager has authority to direct all children, company and parents. Complete cooperation is expected and disrespectful behavior will not be tolerated. Rehearsal and Performance Days at the Cannon Center (Wednesday Sunday, November 19-23) 1. Arrive on time scheduled call times have been published & can be find on the NBE website. 2. Enter through the Cannon Center door at Exchange and Main. A map is at the end of this document. Check-in desk is at Exchange street entrance. Curbside volunteers will be ready to escort your child inside at drop-off and escort your child to your car at pick up if you are not staying at the theater. Parents who accompany their child must check him/her in and out at the Check In desk. 3. Come prepared (younger dancers should have make-up and hair done, make-up kits, snacks, activities, etc.) Back Stage Rules for Dancers (please review with your child) 1. Minimal noise back stage Noise can carry to the stage area. 2. Dancers must demonstrate the utmost respect to the facility and other adults. 3. Respect the Cannon Center property. Do not damage or break anything. 4. NBE is not responsible for any items lost or stolen. 5. Stay in assigned dressing room until called to perform. 6. Boys and girls must stay in their own rooms. 7. Bring items to stay busy (i.e. quiet games, homework, books, and magazines). You are responsible for any items brought back stage. Electronic items must have headphones. 8. Pack healthy snacks. Nothing sugary or greasy foods. a. Sandwich, apple or banana, protein bars, pretzels, peanut butter crackers (no crumbly or staining foods) b. Water bottles (no sugary or colored drinks) c. No gum d. No eating or drinking in costumes 4
9. Katie Smythe, Artistic Director, along with the Stage Manager has authority to direct all children, company members and parents. 10. Dancers are not allowed in the lobby or theater during the show. 11. No one will be allowed in the theater without a ticket. The Cannon Center ushers will enforce this policy. Parent Notes/Volunteer Notes: No parents or guests will be allowed back stage unless they have signed up in advance to volunteer and have been assigned a volunteer duty. Parent volunteer must stay back stage with their assigned students in the assigned dressing rooms. Parent volunteers are there to assist ALL dancers and may or may not be assigned to their child. No parents or guests will be allowed in the theater for the tech/dress rehearsal at the Cannon Center. No one will be allowed in the theater without a ticket. Please sign your child in and out at the Exchange/Main entrance before and after each rehearsal and performance. Please be sure to drop off any items with your child when you initially drop them off. Please make sure your child arrives on time. One late dancer will effect the entire production. Please have patience. We will do our best to get your dancer in and out of rehearsals and performances at the scheduled times. However, Wednesday is our first day in the theater and there are over 100 performers, many who are on the main stage for the first time. Therefore, a rehearsal may run late and we expect all dancers to stay until dismissed and we appreciate your cooperation.
