TORQUAY S.L.S.C. SUN, SURF & SAND President s update Two months has passed since the AGM and I am starting to find my feet in the role. The role of President to me is not the critical one the role of every member is what makes or breaks a club. I am honoured to hold the position but I don t possess a magic wand or formula that determines the success of our great club that sits with you, the members. As members you will have expectations of not only me but the entire Committee, as you should, however we need your help as well. So, to set us off on the right foot I ask two things of every member to trust and respect. This club has a great tradition, it is an iconic surf club that was built by grit and hard work. If every member treats everyone with trust and respect we will be able to move forward with some exciting plans. Whilst it has only been a short time for the Committee we have been very busy. A mentor program has been set up between some Directors and Life Members. The idea is to ensure that the past and the future connect in a positive way. The introduction of a Supporters Club reporting to the Functions Director to raise much need funds has been agreed. Refer to the article seeking volunteers. We have appointed a Development Coach, Grant Matthews, to assist members moving from nippers to seniors focusing on three pillars social interaction, lifesaving and competition. This is a critical initiative to ensure sustainability of our club across all areas. Club News I m really excited for the season ahead working with our new Committee leading the Club. 5 Meet the Committee Pat Spinazzola Lifesaving Director Patrol Captain (4th season) and Bronze Camp Manager (since 2016); previously IRB Captain (2 years), Director of Membership (1 year), LSV Volunteer of the Year. After a 3 year stint as a Nipper, I joined the club and surf lifesaving to compete in surf boats, I've been very lucky to have been in the Victorian State Team twice, and win 3 State Championships. I also don't mind the occasional beach event, although the last race I was in I ended up receiving my medal in emergency at Apollo Bay Hospital! Passionate about the service we provide to our beachgoers, and about building pathways for our members to grow and improve as lifesavers and people. I'm also passionate about small rubber boats that make a lot of noise and go very fast. Something you may not know about me: In 2015, I climbed Mt Haleakalā (a dormant volcano) in Maui. The crater at the bottom of the volcano is known as 'the quietest place on earth'. The 10,000 ft peak is at the top of a 16km trail along switchbacks known as Sliding Sands (name speaks for itself). One of the most unbelievable experiences in my life and I'd highly recommend it. Pat Spinazzola, Lifesaving Director Need to renew your Membership?
