Mississippi Braves (70-59) vs Huntsville Stars (55-73) RHP Michael Lee (8-8, 3.86) vs LHP Drew Gagnon (4-7, 5.52) Overall (70-59) 1st Half (38-32) 2nd Half (32-27) Game #130 August 23, 2013 Pearl, MS Trustmark Park TODAY S GAME: M-Braves right-hander Michael Lee (8-8, 3.86) counters Stars righthander Drew Gagnon (4-7, 5.52) in game one of this five-game series. LAST TIME OUT: The Montgomery Biscuits continued their series onslaught of the Mississippi Braves, winning Thursday night s series finale 10-3 at Riverwalk Stadium. The scoring started early and never stopped. The very first Biscuits hitter of the day, second baseman Ryan Brett, smacked a solo home run and Montgomery never trailed again. Montgomery tacked on two more runs stretching their early lead to 3-0 in the second on an RBI double from Steven TInoco and a passed ball to plate Kyeong Kang. Mississippi (32-27; 70-59) showed some fight early, keeping the game close despite the Biscuits jumping out so quickly. In the third, Omar Luna hit his first home run of the year out onto the traintracks, a solo shot to start the Braves scoring. Then in the fourth, back-to-back singles by Jose Martinez and Jaime Pedroza set up a sacrifice fly for Christian Marrero, pulling it to 3-2. But Montgomery wouldn t stop. In the fourth, a Brett two-run single extended the lead back to 5-2, and the Braves were sunk. It was a short night for Mitch Atkins, who allowed five runs on five hits and four walks over four innings, suffering his second loss of the year. Former Brave Erik Hamren earned his first win of the season after pitching two relief innings of starter Marquis Fleming. The Biscuits put the game away in the sixth, loading the bases against Tom Keeling. A wild pitch scored Tinoco from third, mere moments before Curt Casali hit his fifth double-a home run, making it 9-2 Biscuits. The teams exchanged runs in the eighth. Martinez scored for the Braves on a wild pitch after he doubled to start the top half. Montgomery plated Shawn O Malley on a double play ball up the middle. The Jacksonville Suns were rained out in Chattanooga, a game that will not be made up, so with the loss the Braves move to two games back with ten remaining-five against Huntsville at home beginning Friday, then five in Jacksonville starting next Thursday. GETTING ON BASE: Christian Bethancourt strung together a 40-game on-base streak, June 13 through August 14. During that span, he raised his batting average from.242 to.292 and broke Willie Cabrera s M-Braves record of 38 games which was set in 2009. Bethancourt also had a 16-game hitting streak during that time span. STREAKIN: Outfielder Dan Brewer currently has a 26-game on-base streak. Mycal Jones also strung together an 18-game on-base streak and a 16-game hitting streak, posting a.403 batting average, from July 19-August 7. after 8/21 NEW RECORD: Tommy La Stella set a new M-Braves record with a 23-game hitting streak (.386, 34-88) that ran from July 5 to August 5. La Stella broke the M-Braves record for longest hitting streak in team history with a RBI-double in the first inning at Joe Davis Stadium in Huntsville on 8/3. The previous record belonged to Carl Loadenthal and had stood since 2007. SWIPING BASES: The M-Braves have stolen 128 bases on the season, second-most in team history. The M-Braves record was set in 2007 at 159 when three players (Carl Loadenthal, 40; Diroy Hernandez, 22; J.C. Holt, 20) combined to swipe 82 of those bases. The M-Braves stole 124 bases last season. LEAGUE LEADERS: As a team the M-Braves enter this series with the second-best ERA in the league at 3.13 and the third-best batting average at.253. Martinez enters the series with the third-best batting average in the Southern League at.291, Bethancourt sits fourth with a.291 mark and Pedroza ranks eighth with a.284 average. Marrero s 80 walks rank third, and Mycal Jones ranks fourth in the league with 29 stolen bases on the year. RHP Gus Schlosser ranks third with a 2.50 ERA.
