www.wpa.org.za October 2013 Newsletter Editorial It is October, the turn of a new season, after a very long and wet winter that unfortunately had an effect on all events hosted within the province. The events during the past month have definitely shown the effect of the changing weather. Trust that spring will finally start and lead us to early morning sunrises and later sunsets. The WPA events calendar also shows the start of track and field season and the ever popular midweek road running events. We appeal to all clubs to embrace opportunities to promote their events and assist in continuously growing our sport. WPA will be holding its Annual General Meeting in early October. This year it includes the biannual elections. The WPA Constitution was amended a few years ago to make amendments to the fact that no one may serve more than two consecutive terms as President, Vice President or Chair of a commission. Two resignations were received during the term, namely Road Running and Race Walking. The positions that will be contested are President, Vice President, Internal and External Liaisons and Cross Country Commission Chair. The outgoing Board has maintained good finances, with solid financial measures from the current board in place (as shown by the clean audit report for a second term) and a healthy bank balance, it is proof that the province is in good financial standing. The fact that WPA has a well led administrative office, it has created a strong base and platform that places WPA in a position of strength and duly recognised as a leading federation in comparison to other sporting federations in South Africa. Western Province will once again host the SA 50km Race Walking Championships at Youngsfield Military Base on 12 October. Events start at 06H00, with the last event starting at 12H00. We would like to encourage all clubs to come out and support our WP Race Walking team. The Western Province Kids Athletics program is progressing well. This season sees the commencement of the Teen Athletics program, which focuses on children between the ages of 13 and 15 years. We look forward to welcoming more enthusiastic clubs onto the 2014 program. The ASA Online Registration program is well supported by the WPA clubs. A few clubs have not uploaded their member s details and are encouraged to do so as soon as possible. The program updates will soon be completed; this will assist clubs with communication to their members. The current licensed athlete information must be completed before licences will be sold to the club for the 2014 season. Running Regards Jakes Jacobs

Commission News CROSS COUNTRY The final cross country league event took place at Pollsmoor, with more than 1000 athletes participating. A team from Riversdale (Southern Cape) participated in this event that brought the league events for 2013 to a close. A WP cross country team was selected after the Western Province Championships that took place at UWC on 17 August 2013. The team comprising of 55 members and 5 managers were invited to participate, together with SWD at the schools championships on 31 August 2013. The SA Cross Country Championships took place on Saturday 14 September in Potchefstroom. The day saw 3600 athletes take part in very hot and dusty conditions. A number of WP Athletes were placed in the Top 10 in their respective categories. WPA won 13 individual (6 Gold, 4 Silver, 3 Bronze) and 5 team medals. Special mention and congratulations go to the following athletes: Results Category Men 45-49 Henry Wolstenholme Men 50-54 Eric Coetzee Men 55-59 Mpendula Mpukane Men 60-64 Clive Owen Awie Veldsman Women 35-39 Bulelwa Simae Women 40-44 Linley Holmes Women 50-54 Mariëtte Strauss Women 55-59 Olga Howard Women 65-69 Pixie Sparg Boys U/15 Rowhaldo Ratz Girls U/15 Hayley Preen Girls U/19 Annie Bothma Position 3 rd 3 rd 3 rd

The day was set to be a lot of fun with getting everyone singing and dancing to a song which will remind them of how to focus on different elements of correct race-walking technique. Three of our now Senior athletes who also started with a Development group shared their sporting achievements with the group and encouraged them to continue to grow with the sport. The group of around 30 young aspiring race-walkers were split into two, between John Hotston and Jurgen Spencer to do some practical exercises with them on the track and it was very evident that Western Province has loads of potential in increasing the numbers of Senior race-walkers as we nurture these young talented athletes. The session was closed by Lindela Madikizela who has played a huge role in initiating a development group within race-walking. He shared some thoughts on societal and cultural issues regarding sport as a means of developing discipline and how it affects all areas of one s life. Of course the highlight of the day for these youngsters was finishing with a hot dog and refreshment and we hope that they took some additional knowledge home with them. With our 4 th and final Race Walking Grand Prix event having taken place in September as well, all sights are set on delivering a well organised 50km Race Walking Championship and Inter Provincial on 12 October. If you are curious about race-walkers, come down to Youngsfield Military base and support your local province battling it out against the country s best race-walkers.

UPCOMING WORKSHOPS WORKSHOP 1: NUTRITION - THE BENEFITS OF DOING IT THE RIGHT WAY Date: 19 October 2013 Food provides us with the energy we need to fuel all our daily activities, but for athletes it also needs to provide the energy to optimize their training, perform at their best, and repeatedly recover whilst remaining free from injury and illness. The workshop will serve as an information session which provides nutritional guidelines for both the athlete and coach, including food (carbohydrates, fibre, proteins, fats) and fluid intake during, and after, training and competition, the nutrients required, use of supplements, or not, identifying problem areas such as eating disorders and much more. WPA Development KIDS ATHLETICS Western Province Kids Athletics juniors had a well-deserved break after the WP Cross Championships that took place on 17 August 2013. They kick-started the new season with Cape Town Marathon Fun Runs that took place on the 21 September from the Green Point Forecourt. The kids participated in both the Cape Town 5km Fun Run and 5 x 4.2km Relays. Most of the participants were initially concerned about the weather as it was raining in the morning but managed to clear up closer to the start of 5 x 4.2km relay, which took place at 14:30. The kids arrived in large numbers and thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon s festivities! The kids will now commence with the Kids Athletics League events, please find below the program: Date Event Venue 12 October 2013 League Event Central Hockey Club, Vygieskraal 19 October 2013 League Event (including assessment) Bellville Velodrome 26 October 2013 League Event Constantia sports complex - False Bay Rugby Club (VOB Clubhouse) 2 November 2013 League Event Strandfontein Pavilion 9 November 2013 Awards & Fun Activities TBC Clubs, parents and friends are encouraged and welcome to come and support the juniors at each event. 2013 is flying by; the coaches and juniors cannot believe that we have less than two months to the end of 2013 Kids Athletics season.
