SPORTS LESSON PLAN LEVEL: Advanced MATERIALS: Pictures of sports figures, playoffs, coach with team VOCABULARY: Choose sports from the following list. Do NOT attempt to teach all of them. You may ask class to name their favorite sports and teach the lesson from that list or use sports that you are going to be playing during activity time. Ask students who the individual is. Do any of them play sports? What sport(s) do they play? If they do not play a sport, perhaps they know someone who plays a sport. Lesson 1 TEACHER INSTRUCTING AND MODELING: Go over the sports and describe them. Charades: Students act out a sport and the others must name it Write down 5 clues describing a sport and then show picture of the sport that you have described. EXAMPLE: It is a team sport This sport is played on a field The players wear special shoes The players wear helmets You get points for a touchdown Do this with a couple of other sports.

GUIDED PRACTICE: Have a student come to the front and whisper to you the name of a sport. The student then gives a clue to the class and the class guesses the sport. The student continues to give clues until someone guesses the sport. (Students could be divided into teams and given points. If they are able to guess the sport on the first clue, they get five points, second clue 4 points, etc.). INDIVIDUAL PRACTICE: In pairs or teams, have students select a sport and write 5 clues describing the sport. The pairs or teams then ask the class to guess what sport they are describing. The pairs or teams can write it down or it can be done verbally. If they get it right on the first clue, they could get 5 pts., second clue 4 pts., etc. Lesson 2 VOCABULARY: Sports: play basketball, football/soccer, American football, baseball, golf, ice hokey, volleyball, badminton, Ping-Pong/table tennis, tennis Sports and recreation: go -ing bowling, jogging, walking, ice skating, skiing, surfing, skateboarding, fishing, hiking, dancing, horseback riding, sledding, biking, snowboarding, hunting, swimming, rock climbing, snowshoeing, water skiing, kayaking do: gymnastics, cheerleading, aerobics, track and field, karate/martial arts, archery, yoga/tai chi, stretches, run the 100m dash, dive, race cars, box, lift weights, wrestle, fence, track and field TEACH AND MODEL: Teach that we use sports with both play and go to introduce the sport. Have you ever played/gone? Show the students examples and then have them practice examples themselves. PRACTICE: In pairs give each other a sport to put into a sentence... Today I will INDEPENDENT: In pairs write a dialogue about trying to figure out what sports to play using what we just learned. Lesson3 INSTRUCTING AND MODELING: Picture of a coach (C) talking to the team member (T). (Coach and team are happy as they won.)

C: Congratulations! You won! T: Thank you. I can t believe it! C: You were terrific (great, swell, wonderful, fantastic)! T: Was I really? Thanks C: You should be very proud of yourself. T: I am, thanks a lot. C: You deserved to win. T: Thanks. (Thank you very much, It was nothing) I did work hard. Coach and team are sad as they lost the game. C: Cheer up. You tried hard. T: I'm okay, thanks. Just disappointed. C: Don't look so sad. You can try again. T: I know, but I feel terrible. C: Come on, chin up! You did your best. T: But my best wasn't good enough. C: I'm so sorry you lost. T: Thanks. I feel bad too. C: Tough luck. T: Yeah, I was just unlucky. C: Better luck next time. T: Thanks. I appreciate it. GUIDED PRACTICE: Choose students to come to the front and play the different parts of the dialog. Give them the written out dialogue. They may use different responses if able (see Additional Activities for other responses which could be put into the dialogue). INDEPENDENT PRACTICE Divide students into groups and have them write a story about sometime that they played on a team or played a sport and what happened. The story may be a dialog between team members, coach and team, parents and child on the team, classmates, etc. or may be a story describing the event. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- Lesson 4 Intro: Part of being a team is team work. Now you will work on that. Divide into teams of 4. They will choose a name, sporty nicknames for each. Need to intro their team and why we should cheer for them. Activity: Make maze. Each team has maze walker, a person who can only say, turn right, one who says, turn left, and one who says, go straight. At first, one team at a time, blindfold the walker and see if they can direct him through. Then do all teams at once.

CLOSURE: Review characteristics that are learned through playing sports. Remind students that even though you may not win, there are important traits that can be learned through playing sports. Teaching Baseball Vocabulary: bat, ball, catch, throw, pitch, hit, strike, tag, run bases, fly ball, bases, first base, second base, third base, home plate, outfield, catcher, pitcher, up to bat (up), You re out!, Lesson TEACH AND MODEL: Go over vocabulary and demonstrate the vocabulary draw a field on the board and point to places PRACTICE: TPR - Have everyone stand up. Pretend to bat a ball, pitch the ball, throw a ball, catch a ball, tag a runner out, catch a fly ball, hit the ball, run (in place) to first base TEACH AND MODEL: Explain baseball and the rules of the game. Show on the board Common mistakes: 1. Can t pass another runner 2. Can t throw the ball at another player Get out: (3 outs and change places) Tagged out Hit a ball that is caught before it hits the ground Someone throws the ball to the base before you get there Swing at the ball three times without hitting it Explain the game: Baseball is played on a field, with a home plate and 3 bases at the corners of a diamond, and a pitcher s mound in the center. The pitcher throws the ball from the pitcher s mound over home plate. (Demonstrate). The batter stands beside home plate and swings the bat at the ball, and hits the ball (demonstrate.) The Fielder catches the ball, and throws it to first base (demonstrate), while the batter runs to first base (demonstrate). The First Baseman catches the ball, keeping a foot on first base to get the runner out (demonstrate).

PRACTICE: Set up a small field in the classroom. Have 2 teams of 6 for demonstration. One team is up and the other outfield at the bases and a few out field. The rest of the class watches for demonstration purposes. The first batter tosses a whiffle ball (or foam ball, rolled up sock) a pretend hit and runs to first base while the outfield team tries to make the out. This is to clarify the game and rules before they are spread out on a field. Go outside and play a game. What sports do you enjoy watching? Are there organized sports in the schools? Is PE required? What sports are popular on TV in this country? Do you have city teams? What sports do women play? How are athletes viewed in terms of social class? Why do you think we have rules in sports? What is cheating? Have you ever seen someone cheat in a sporting event? Describe it.
