The Goose Valley Golf Club Newsletter December 2017
Hi there from the Goose Valley Team With summer and the holidays in full swing one can feel the buzz around our little town with the visitors from all parts descending upon Plettenberg bay getting ready for their much anticipated summer break. We at Goose Valley are ready with a fully stocked Pro Shop displaying the summer`s hottest fashions, with brands such as Pringle, Puma, Nike and Green Lamb - there is something for everyone so come on down. We held our final Derby day for the year and boy was it well attended with the day being sponsored by Sue Barber from World Leisure Holidays. There were some great prizes up for grabs, well done to all of the participants and to the winners - Mare Gibson and Pippa Stroebel, on a well played 46pts walking away with the spoils. We look forward to hosting you all in the new year, so please keep a look out for the 1 st Derby day of 2018. It s also that time of year where the course is busier than usual, we will endeavor to do our outmost to ensure that you have a pleasant and hassle free round. You may encounter the occasional slight hold up, but we ask for a little understanding in this regard. We ask all golfers to please tend to their pitch marks on the greens and to all divots. A little bit of help goes a long way to ensure that we have a golf course that we can be truly proud of.

Goose Valley Golf Club The course has held up really well in the past month, despite some issues with the electricity that caused the pumps to be off for a couple of days. I must say that the rain also came at the right time and saved us from losing any turf. As the rounds of golf are picking up every day, I am noticing a few pitch marks on the greens that are not being fixed, divots not being filled on the fairways and tees and bunkers that aren t being raked. Here are a couple of pointers to ensure every golfer does it correctly, so we can have the best playing surface possible. A pitch mark only takes a few seconds to fix correctly however, a pitch mark repaired incorrectly takes over 3 weeks to heal. Correct repair will help protect the grass root system and benefit all members and visitors to the course. Follow on to the next page to see how. A word from our Green Keeper
How to repair a pitch mark on a green Correct Method 1. Discard the loose piece of turf taken out by the ball 2. Insert the pitch mark repairer tool just outside of the back of the pitch mark 3. Lever the turf towards the centre of the pitch mark 4. Repeat this motion from all sides of the pitch mark 5. Gently tap the repaired area with your putter. This action stretches undamaged turf over the pitch mark, providing instant recovery Incorrect Method 1. DO NOT replace the loose piece of turf taken out by the ball. It will die and delay the Healing process. 2. DO NOT pry up the centre of the depression with the pitch mark repairer as it exposes the soil and will delay the healing process 3. DO NOT insert the pitch mark repairer and twist it. This only breaks more turf loose. Fixing pitch marks the correct way will help us protect the greens during the season. The same goes for the divots on Tees, especially on the short holes. We will also from our side do divots every morning and monitor Tee setup to protect the Tees during this busy time ahead. I thank everyone for going the extra mile and fixing other golfers` pitch marks and helping us to keep the greens in great condition. Rainfall to date: October = 39mm November = 74mm May you have a great season and a festive new year. Kind Regards Wesley Pain Head Superintendent
Goose Valley Golf Club You may have seen the recent outline markings next to the 18 th green. Now we can reveal what those were - our one and only famous Goose! But the best is yet to come, all we can do is wait for mother nature to take over and I am sure you will all be pleasantly amazed as to what blossoms. Be sure to keep an eye on it... :Local Rule: What happens if your golf ball ends up in the middle of the goose? It will be treated with a blue stake, which entitles you to free relief from the drop zone which will be demarcated accordingly.
Goose Valley Golf Club Bunker Edging It has been a constant question posed to us in the Pro Shop regarding the area around the bunkers that have been cut/ trimmed ( As indicated by the red arrow). People feel this is area should be treated as fairway and be entitled to a free drop, I wish to bring to your attention that this area is to be treated as the 1 st Cut of rough therefore NO FREE DROP is permitted and must be played as it lies.
Goose Valley Golf Club Season Rules in Play To endeavor to help speed up play for the Season period at Goose Valley we will be introducing the following local rule which will be in effect for the duration of season. All Fynbos is to be treated as a Lateral Hazard should your ball find it s way into this area you will be permitted to drop your ball at the entry point with no more than 1 club`s length relief. However, should your ball have crossed the White Out of Bounds poles, then you will be required to hit the shot from where you last played the shot and incur the 1 additional penalty stroke.
