The Boilermakers are coming off a 59-48 home win over Penn State and that, coupled with an Ohio State loss on Thursday, has Purdue, Indiana and Ohio State in a tie at the top of the conference standings. Senior point guard Lauren Mioton has started the last four games, since the injury to FahKara Malone, and had back-to-back games with career-highs for assists; versus Iowa (6) and Northwestern (7). Purdue is led by Big Ten Player of the Week, Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton s 13.1 ppg average, while senior Lakisha Freeman and freshman Brittany Rayburn are averaging double-digits at 11.1 and 10.4 points per game. Wisdom-Hylton contributes a team-high 9.4 rebounds and 2.8 steals, and in the Penn State win, pulled down 13 boards for the third time this season. Senior center Danielle Campbell is averaging 8.2 ppg and 8.1 rpg and has twice earned the Big Ten weekly honor. As of Jan. 15, the Boilermakers are ranked No. 22 nationally in field goal percentage defense, holding opponents to a season average of 34.9 percent. Purdue s 36.8 percent three-point field goal percentage is 21st among NCAA Division I schools, its 5.3 blocks per game is 22nd and its assist-to-turnover ratio of 0.99 is 24th nationally. The Boilermakers 16.4 assists per game is 19th best. Purdue leads the Big Ten in assists and assist-to-turnover ratio and is second in field goal percentage defense, three-point field goal percentage, blocked shots and steals. Scouting The Hoosiers Indiana (12-3, 5-1 Big Ten) is coming off a 64-61 win at home over Wisconsin and is tied with Ohio State and Purdue for tops in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers lone loss in the Big Ten was a 70-62 defeat at Minnesota on Jan. 8. The Hoosiers are led by forward Amber Jackson s 15.1 ppg average, but all five IU starters average double-digits. Senior Whitney Thomas nearly averages a double-double at 13.3 points and 9.5 rebounds. Her rebound average ranks her second in the Big Ten. Point guard Jamie Braun averages 11.3 ppg, Jori Davis 10.6 ppg and Kim Roberson has a 10.3 ppg average. Head coach Felisha Legette-Jack is in her third year as head coach, having taken over after Purdue head coach, Sharon Versyp s one-year stint in Bloomington. The Hoosiers are averaging a conference-best 70.5 points per game while holding opponents to 59.6 points. Indiana has the league s second-best field goal percentage at 44.0 percent. The last time Indiana was able to defeat Purdue in Bloomington was 10 years ago, on Jan. 25, 1998, by a score of 85-71. Barn Burner Trophy And Crimson & Gold Cup The Barn Burner Trophy was established in the 1993-94 season as a traveling trophy between Purdue and Indiana, funded by the Sara Lee Corporation as part of its discover Women s Sports program. It is similar in concept to football s Old Oaken Bucket, volleyball s Monon Spike and women s soccer s Golden Boot. The winner of the wood plaque is responsible for bringing it back to its campus and adding a panel to denote its victory, complete with score and most valuable player. Purdue won the first Barn Burner Trophy game, 83-58 on March 2, 1994, in West Lafayette and has won 13 of the 15 contests, including the last 10. Since Purdue and IU play each other only once this regular season, Monday s game marks the second consecutive Barn Burner Trophy game played in Bloomington. Last year, the Boilermakers won 55-49 and Purdue s Lakisha Freeman was tabbed as the MVP after turning in a 15 point and nine rebound performance. A full point is on the line in the Crimson & Gold Cup, an all-sports competition between the instate rivals. Familiar Faces Purdue head coach Sharon Versyp was the Hoosiers head coach in 2005-06, before taking over at her alma mater and coached Whitney Thomas and Kim Roberson as freshmen. She also signed Jamie Braun, the Hoosier point guard. Freshman Alex Guyton returns to her hometown of Bloomington and will face former high school teammates on the IU roster, Whitney Thomas and Lydia Serfling. Last Time Out - Purdue defeats Penn State, 59-48 -Purdue was led in scoring by junior Jodi Howell, with 17 points. Howell opened the game making only one of her first five shots, all three-pointers. She followed that stretch by making four straight shots, again, all three-pointers. She finished the game 5 of 9 from the field, tying her season-high with five threes. -Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton pulled down a gamehigh 13 rebounds. She has pulled down 10-or-more rebounds in nine games this season and the 13 rebounds ties her season-high. -Wisdom-Hylton s 13 rebounds moved her past former Purdue All-American Shereka Wright into fourth place on the all-time rebounding list, with 797 career rebounds. -Lakisha Freeman dished out a game-high six assists, tying her career-best for assists.

-For the fourth time this season, the Boilermakers held their opponent to less than 20 points in a half. Penn State scored 19 in the first. -After going 2 of 2 from the free throw line, Danielle Campbell has made 15 consecutive free throws. Her last miss was the front end of a two shot attempt at Illinois on Dec. 22. -With her 5 of 9 three-point shooting, Howell retained first place for Purdue career three-point FG percentage at 42.5 percent. Her season threepoint percentage increased to 51.6 percent (33 of 64) which if maintained, will be a school record. -The 23 turnovers committed by the Boilermakers are the most since they turned the ball over 24 times in a win over Oakland on Nov. 23, 15 games prior to this contest. Here s The Dish The Boilermakers have been sharing the rock with impressive efficiency. In the last four games, Purdue has 72 assists on 88 made field goals. That means 81.8 percent of the Boilermakers field goals have been set up by a pass from a teammate. The Boilers are 19th among NCAA Division I teams for assists per game, averaging 16.4 assists per contest. Weekly Awards For the third consecutive week, a Boilermaker has been named Big Ten Player of the Week. Danielle Campbell was a back-to-back recipient before Wisdom-Hylton was tabbed this week. It is the first time that a school has had three straight Players of the Week in the same season since Penn State achieved the feat Jan. 10 to 24, 2005. Big Ten Player Of The Week Purdue senior forward Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton was named Big Ten Player of the Week after leading the Boilermakers to a pair of wins last week. The Naperville, Ill., native registered a pair of doubledoubles as Purdue downed Iowa at home, 60-49, and edged Northwestern in an overtime contest on the road, 67-57. Against the Hawkeyes, Wisdom- Hylton tallied 14 points, shooting 50 percent (7 of 14) from the floor, also grabbing 10 rebounds while contributing three assists, three blocks and five steals. Versus the Wildcats, she racked up a season-high 22 points on 10 of 16 (62.5 percent) shooting with 10 boards, five assists, five blocks and three steals. Her double-doubles accounted for her fifth and sixth this season and the 17th and 18th in her career. The weekly award is the second of the season for Wisdom-Hylton and the third of her career. Among The Big Ten s Best Redshirt senior Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton is once again showing her versatility. The 6-foot-2 forward, a preseason All-Big Ten selection, is in the top 10 in the conference in eight statistical categories and in the top 15 of one other. She is second in the league for steals (2.8), is third in rebounding (9.4), third for defensive rebounds (6.8), tied for eighth for offensive rebounds (2.6), sixth in blocked shots (1.8), seventh in field goal percentage (49.7 percent), eighth in scoring (13.1) and 10th in minutes played (34.0). She is also 14th in assists (2.9). Wisdom-Hylton has upped her career totals to 1,367 points and 271 steals, which both rank first in the Big Ten among active players. She also increased her career numbers to 797 rebounds and 257 blocks, which places her second among active conference players in those categories. Pounding The Boards Purdue has had at least one player pull down double-digit rebounds in four consecutive games. The Boilermakers have had a double-digit rebounder in 12 games this season. Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton has recorded 10 or more rebounds a team-best nine times this season, while Danielle Campbell has done it four times and Natasha Bogdanova twice. Wisdom-Hylton has the third highest rebound average in the Big Ten at 9.4 rpg and Campbell is seventh with an 8.1 rpg average. Streaky Purdue center Danielle Campbell has hit 15 consecutive free throws. Her last miss was the front end of a two shot attempt at Illinois on Dec. 22. Campbell is 14th all-time at Purdue for made free throws with 258 and tied for 11th for career free-throw percentage at 76.1 percent. Record Watch Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton is in 14th place in the Purdue record book for career scoring and needs nine points to move past Erin Lawless for the 13th spot. Wisdom-Hylton holds the No. 4 spot in career rebounding. She owns the school record for career blocks with 257, is sixth in career field goal percentage at 52.6 percent and is fifth in steals with 271, needing seven steals to move past Stephanie White for fourth. Jodi Howell tied with Katie Douglas for 10th in career threes with 105 and first in career field goal percentage at 42.5 percent. Block Party Seniors Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton and Danielle Campbell are in the top five all time at Purdue for blocked shots. Wisdom-Hylton holds the top spot with 257, while Campbell is fifth with 159 and needs just three blocks to move past Christa LaCroix into fourth. Malone Injured Purdue junior point guard FahKara Malone will miss four to six weeks after suffering an open dislocation of the ring finger on her right hand during overtime of the Michigan State game on Jan. 1. The injury occurred with 2:42 remaining in the extra period with the score tied at 61-61. Malone was going for a loose ball in the paint in traffic and jammed her finger on an MSU player. The Spartans would go on to win 68-62 in Mackey Arena. Malone, a native of Evansville, Ind., has played in 83 games as a Boilermaker and has started all but three. She takes to the sideline an average of 7.9 points, 4.8 assists and 2.6 steals per game. The 5-foot-3 guard is a two-time All-Big Ten defensive team member and was named Big Ten co-player of the Week on Nov. 25. She holds eighth place in the Purdue record books for career steals with 227, she is in 11th for assists with 334 and 12th for career three-pointers with 94. Reliable Freeman Senior Lakisha Freeman is the Boilermaker s second-leading scorer. She had a team-best streak of double-figure scoring games with seven, which was snapped when she scored nine points in the loss to Michigan State. The 2007-08 campaign was arguably Sharon Versyp s finest coaching performance of her career. The Boilermakers lost four starters, two to graduation (Katie Gearlds and Erin Lawless) and two to injuries (Jodi Howell and Lindsay Wisdom- Hylton) but still won 19 games, captured their second consecutive Big Ten Tournament title and third place in the regular season conference standings. With the last win of the season, a 66-59 upset of No. 17 Utah in the first-round of the NCAA Tournament, Versyp won her 50th game as Purdue s coach in just her second season. She has a 25-win per season average and at 50-21, her school mark is a.704 win percentage. In her first season as the head coach at her alma mater, Versyp led Purdue to a 31-6 record that included a Big Ten Tournament championship and an appearance in the NCAA Elite Eight. The Boilermakers finished the 2006-07 season ranked No. 7 in the final USA Today/ESPN poll and Versyp was named the 2007 WBCA Region 6 Coach of the Year. The 31 wins equaled the second-most in school history and marks only the third time the Boilermakers have achieved a 30- plus win season. Versyp became Purdue s winningest first year head coach with her 24th win on Feb. 2007 and her 2006-07 win percentage of 83.8 percent (31-6) is fifth best in a season at Purdue and tops for a first-year coach. Head Coach Sharon Versyp - Third Year at Purdue - School Record 62-26 (30-10 Big Ten) Career Record 179-91 (39-17 Big Ten) Versyp was hired April 10, 2006, as the eighth head coach of the Purdue women s basketball team. Versyp, who played point guard for the Boilermakers from 1984 to 1988, directed Indiana to a 19-14 record in 2005-06, the second-best turnaround in school history. Prior to Indiana, Versyp was the head coach at Maine for five seasons where she was named 2003 and 2005 America East Coach of the Year. At Maine, Versyp put together back-to-back 25-win seasons for the first time in school history. As a player, Versyp was one of only seven four-year starters in school history. A native of Mishawaka, Ind., she was the first Indiana Miss Basketball to play for Purdue. Versyp still has top 10 standings in 11 statistical categories; career points (10th - 1,565), career points per game (8th - 13.8), career field goals made (8th - 653), career field goals attempted (6th - 1,404), free throws made in a game (3rd - 14), career free throw percentage (5th - 79.6), assists in a game (4th - 12), career assists (7th - 418), blocked shots in a game (T3rd - 7), career double-figure scoring games (7th - 87) and career minutes played - (6th -3,867). In addition to her on-court success, Versyp excelled in the classroom. She earned Academic All-Big Ten honors as a sophomore, junior and senior. Marvelous Mioton Senior Lauren Mioton has stepped into the starting point guard role since the injury to FahKara Malone and has led Purdue to four straight victories. At Northwestern, she set a career high with seven assists. The New Orleans, La., native has plenty of off-the-court accomplishments as well. Mioton was runner-up to Tim Tebow for the Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup. Mioton and coach Versyp traveled to Atlanta on Jan. 14 for that presentation. She was crowned Purdue s Homecoming Queen on Oct. 24, 2008, and is the first Purdue women s basketball player to win the honor. Mioton was a finalist for the Rhodes Scholarship. In 2009, Mioton will be producing another cookbook as a fundraiser for the wetlands preservation in the New Orleans area. Last season, with the assistance of the BOILERmaker NETwork, she was able to donate $8,200 to the Lake Ponchartrain Basin Foundation. In her spare time, Mioton has been interviewing at some of the top medical schools in the country, including Yale, Vanderbilt and Duke. Rayburn Shines Freshman Brittany Rayburn from Attica, Ind., leads the way among Purdue freshmen, averaging 10.4 points, 1.9 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. Her scoring average is tops in the Big Ten for the freshman class. In the win over Texas, she led all scorers with 19 points, had three assists, a seasonhigh four steals and a blocked shot. She has led Purdue in scoring four times, with 22 points at Hawai i and vs. Iona and 19 points at Valparaiso and vs. Texas. In the win over Hawai i, she connected on 6 of 8 three-pointers, going 7 of 9 from the field and 2 of 2 from the free throw line. The six made threes is a freshman class school record. Rayburn has reached double-figure scoring in seven games this season, including 10 in the Penn State win. Dominant Defense As of Jan. 11, The Boilermakers are ranked 22nd nationally among NCAA Division I schools in fieldgoal percentage defense. By holding Penn State to 49 points, Purdue has limited five opponents this season, including three conference foes (Illinois, Iowa and Penn State) to under 50 points. In Purdue s 80-44 victory against IUPUI on Nov. 16, the Boilermakers limited Jaguar shooters to a 19.4 percent (7-36) from the field in the first half and a 24.2 (16 of 66) percentage overall. In the 70-50 win against Portland, the Boilermakers held the Pilots to 34.8 percent from the field and forced 26 turnovers. Oakland was limited to a seasonlow 22.8 percent (13 of 57) from the field and 40 points. The win against Prairie View A&M marked the fourth time in six games that Purdue held an opponent to under 55 points. On the season, Purdue is holding opponents to an average of 57.9 points per game and 34.9 percent from the field. The Boilermakers are forcing an average of 18.2 turnovers, are averaging 9.2 steals and 5.3 blocks per game. The blocked shot average is 22nd among NCAA Division I teams. Shooting The Rock Purdue s five losses have also been its five lowest shooting performances this season, including a season-low 31.3 percent from the field at Valparaiso. The Boilermakers shot just 32.8 percent from the field against Michigan State. The Boilermakers have shot 41.1 percent or better in 11 of their 12 wins, including two games of 50.0 percent or better (Hawai i and Prairie View A&M). The one exception is the victory against Penn State when the Boilers hit just 39.1 percent of their shots. RPI As of Jan. 16, the Boilermakers are ranked 29th in the Sagarin RPI Ratings, 37th by RPIratings.com, 38th in the NCAA ratings and 40th by CollegeRPI.com. Offensive Production The Boilermakers are averaging 36.8 percent from three-point range this year, which ranks them 21st among NCAA Division I teams. This season, Purdue has scored 40 or more points in seven halves of play. Purdue had its highest second half output of the season, with 44 points at Iowa. In the Boilermaker s first two games - IUPUI and Portland - they scored over 40 points in both first halves of play. The Boilermakers did not score 40 or more in any first half last season. Against Oakland, Purdue was held to 26 points in the first half but exploded for 42 points in the second stanza, hitting 17 of 27 shots for 63.0 percent. Purdue scored just 24 first-half points against No. 5 Stanford, but poured in 41 points in the second period. Against Hawaii, the Boilermakers racked up 52 first half points while shooting 63.3 percent, including 76.6 percent (10 of 13) from beyond the arc. With the return of their shooting touch, the Boilermakers dropped 43 first half points on Iona on Dec. 13. Blocking Into The Record Books Senior Danielle Campbell blocked her 150th shot against Iowa on Dec. 28. The 6-foot-4 center is tied for third in the conference in blocked shots with a 2.0 bpg average. She recorded three blocks vs. Texas and vs. Iowa, marking the sixth time in her career that she has had three or more blocks in backto-back games. The Chicago native has recorded three or more blocks in seven games this season. Campbell s 159 career blocked shots puts her fifth on Purdue s all-time career blocks list. Teammate Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton is tops on that list with 257 blocked shots. The Big 5-00 Danielle Campbell is second on the team in rebounding this season and seventh in the Big Ten with an 8.1 rpg average and reached the 500 rebound plateau in mid-december. The 6-foot-4 center has 582 career rebounds and is sixth among active Big Ten players in that category. The Century Mark With her start against Michigan State, Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton recorded her 100th career appearance in Purdue s starting lineup. Heading into today s contest, the 6-foot-2 senior has played in 117 games as a Boilermaker and has been in the starting lineup for 80 consecutive matchups. A New Dimension Purdue s first points in its 68-40 win over Oakland came on a three-pointer by senior Danielle Campbell. It was only the second three of her career. She also opened the Stanford game with a three-pointer and is 3 of 6 from beyond the arc this season. Against Ranked Opponents Three of Purdue s losses this season are against teams ranked in the top-15. The Boilermakers are 1-3 this season against ranked opponents and 11-2 against unranked foes. Purdue lost to No. 5 Stanford 78-70 in overtime, fell 70-59 at home to No. 8 Maryland and lost 62-51 to No. 11 Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., but beat No. 8/4 Texas, 66-55 on Jan. 5. Milestone Victory Sharon Versyp picked up her 175th career victory with the 69-60 win at Iowa on Dec. 28. Milestone Victory: Part 2 The win at Iowa was also Purdue s 300 conference victory. The Boilermakers are the first women s team in the Big Ten to achieve 300 conference wins. Fan-tastic Purdue averaged 8,873 fans per home game in 2007-08, ranking fifth in the nation, an improvement of three spots from the previous year. The Boilermakers have finished in the top 10 in national attendance for 13 straight years and last season marked the fourth time Purdue has finished in the top five. The Boilermakers are currently ranked fourth nationally with an average attendance of 8,872 fans. Purdue s biggest home crowd this year so far has been the 10,814 fans that were on hand for the Maryland game. Last season the largest crowd was 12,592 for the Jan. 20, game against Northwestern, a 52-38 victory for the Boilermakers. On The Horizon The Boilermakers return to Mackey Arena on Jan. 22 to take on Minnesota on the Big Ten Network and No. 15/13 Ohio State on Jan. 25 on ESPN2. Purdue is tied with Ohio State for first place in the league and the Gophers, who have defeated both Indiana and Ohio State, are just one game off the pace in second place. Silver Anniversary Coach Sharon Versyp has been selected to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame Silver Anniversary Team. Versyp played basketball at Mishawaka High School in Mishawaka, Ind., from 1979 to 1984. As a senior, she averaged 23.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.8 assists while leading the team to a 24-1 record. She scored 1,189 career points and led Mishawaka to a 58-9 record in her three years as a varsity player. She was named Indiana Miss Basketball in 1984 and was the first to play for Purdue. An outstanding volleyball player, Versyp also led her high school volleyball team to the state finals twice, including a championship in 1983. Versyp is in her third season as the head coach of her alma mater and her ninth year as a collegiate head coach. The Hall of Fame s Annual Women s Banquet will be held April 25, 2009. The ceremony will take place in Indianapolis. Commencement Redshirt junior Jodi Howell participated in commencement ceremonies at Purdue on Dec. 21. She has received her bachelor s degree in organizational leadership and supervision and this semester has begun classes toward her masters degree in technology with a concentration in OLS. Woods To Redshirt Purdue sophomore forward Samantha Woods will redshirt this season. The 6-foot-3 Bolingbrook, Ill., native has changed her major to chemical engineering and will use this season to focus on her academics. As a freshman, Woods played in 26 games, starting two. She averaged 10.2 minutes, 2.9 points and 1.9 rebounds a game and recorded career highs in her college debut with 17 points and seven rebounds against Valparaiso. Mosley To Transfer Sophomore Keshia Mosley is transferring and has signed scholarship papers at Western Kentucky in Bowling Green. Mosley had been suspended this season due to violation of team policies. Mosley s parents are graduates of Western Kentucky and her father, Alex, played basketball there for Clem Haskins. Impressive Results This summer, the strength part of Purdue s speed, strength and conditioning program was emphasized and conditioning coordinator Ron Thomson saw impressive results. Junior FahKara Malone set the all-time record for the power clean, maxing out at 83 kg. (182.6 lbs.), while 10 current Boilermakers recorded 60 kg. (132 lbs.) or higher. Freshman Chantel Poston set the Purdue women s basketball record in the squat with 300 pounds. She also turned in a 20-yard sprint time of 2.77 seconds and a one-step vertical leap of 30 inches. Seven players had bench press results that placed them in the top-30 all time. Malone maxed out at 155, Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton lifted 150 pounds, Lakisha Freeman 145, Chantel Poston 145, Michelle Clark 140 and freshman Alex Guyton lifted 135 lbs. Purdue s Early Signing Class The Boilermakers have secured another outstanding group of prospective studentathletes. Three of the country's top high school players have signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Purdue beginning in the fall of 2009. Michaela "KK" Houser, a 5-foot-7 guard from Lincoln, Neb., (Southeast High School) is ranked 65th in nation by the Collegiate Girls Basketball Report, Sam Ostarello, a 6-foot-2 forward from Fort Pierre, S.D., (Stanley County High School) is ranked 15th by Hoopgurlz and Ashley Wilson, a 6-foot forward from Wheeling, Ill., (Wheeling High School) is ranked 40th by the All-Star Girls Report. All three student-athletes are rated among the top 100 players in the country by the All-Star Collegiate Girls Basketball Report and the signing class is ranked No. 13 nationally. Call Me The Sharon Versyp Radio Show made its season debut Nov. 24. Tim Newton, the voice of the Boilermakers, serves as host of the hour-long program broadcast live from Puccini s on WBPE (95.3 BOB-FM). The show is slated to run from 7:10 to 8:10 p.m., following the Matt Painter Call-In Show (6 to 7 p.m.). Versyp s show will air primarily on Mondays. To reward fans for their support of the tournament, all-session tickets are on sale for $45 until Jan. 31. That is a $20 discount from the regular price of $65. The Big Ten Men s and Women s Basketball Tournaments will call Indianapolis and Conseco Fieldhouse home through 2012. Indianapolis has staged 13 of the 14 previous women s tournaments and Purdue has taken home seven of those 13 tournament titles. The 2009 tournament features all 11 Big Ten teams in action, competing in 10 games over four days to crown the 2009 champion and earn the conference s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. In the past 14 years of Big Ten Tournament play, the conference has welcomed more than 417,000 fans. Six different conference representatives have won the tournament championship.
