BALL STATE VOLLEYBALL QUICK HITS With a 7-1 record at home so far this season, the Ball State women's volleyball program is 255-79 (.763) all-time in Worthen Arena... The Cardinals are even better when it comes to battling league foes in the building, owning a 184-47 (.797) advantage in MAC matches since Worthen Arena became the program's home beginning in the 1992 season. Ball State boasts an 883-582-2 (.603) all-time record in women s volleyball over 45-plus seasons of play... The Cardinals have won eight MAC Regular Season Championships, six MAC Tournament Championships and made eight appearances in the NCAA Tournament. In last Friday's match versus Western Michigan (Oct. 6), the Ball State defense limited the Broncos to a season-low.079 (38-28-127) attack percentage... Including WMU, the Cardinals have limited three opponents to their worst attacking marks of the season, including a.155 (30-14-103) effort by Navy (Sept. 1) and a.052 (33-27-115) mark by Fort Wayne (Sept. 2)... Overall, the Cardinals have limited opponents to.155-or-below attack percentages seven times this season, all being wins. Ball State enters the week with the league's top overall attack percentage at.220... Junior opposite Emily Holland leads the Cardinals offense and ranks 10th in the MAC with a.281 attack percentage, while all six of Ball State's starting attackers are hitting.164-or-better... Junior outside Brooklyn Goodsel is the team's top terminator with a 3.03 kills-per-set average, while junior outside Ellie Dunn is not far behind at 2.95. The Ball State offense was firing on all cylinders in the sweep of Buffalo (Sept. 30), connecting for a season-best.396 (45-7-96) attack percentage... It was the Cardinals' best attack percentage in a match since a.419 (55-11-105) effort in a home sweep of The Citadel Aug. 31, 2013... In fact, it was the team's fourth-best attack percentage in a match in the rally scoring era (2001-present), with the record being a.425 (51-6-106) rate of success in a sweep of Northern Illinois Oct. 28, 2005. With her career-high tying 21 kills versus Northern Illinois (Oct. 7), Brooklyn Goodsel became just the 17th player in program history to record 20-or-more kills in at least four career matches... Goodsel also smashed 21 kills versus Toledo (Sept. 29, 2016) and has blasted 20 kills in two matches; versus Central Michigan (Sept. 23, 2016) and at Eastern Michigan (Sept. 22, 2017). Brooklyn Goodsel opened MAC play by leading the offense with a 5.14 kills-per-set average and leading the defense with a 4.57 digs-per-set average in wins at Eastern Michigan (Sept. 22) and Central Michigan (Sept. 23)... With the effort, Goodsel became the first player in program history to average over 5.0 kills and 4.0 digs per set for a week in the 25-point rally scoring era (2008-present)... In fact, Goodsel is just the second player in program history to average over 5.0 kills and 4.0 digs per set in a week in the rally scoring era (2001-present)... The only other player to accomplish the task was three-time All-MAC First Team selection Sarah Obras (2002-05) who accomplished the feat eight times. Redshirt junior middle Meg Starling leads Ball State at the net and ranks fifth in the MAC with a 1.00 blocks-per-set average... Starling entered the season with 27 blocks and an 0.58 career blocksper-set average, having played in 46 of a possible 250 sets in her first two seasons... So far this year, Starling has played in 64 of 72 sets and racked up 64 total blocks, including 13 solo stuffs. Meg Starling dominated at the net in the Cardinals' win over Idaho State (Sept. 8), finishing the match with a career-high 10 total blocks (two solo and eight assists)... She is the first Ball State player to reach double digit blocks in a match since Haley Benson (2012-14) recorded 14 total blocks (five solo and nine assists) in a 3-1 victory over SMU Sept. 21, 2013. Freshman outside attacker Kia Holder became the sixth different Ball State player to record double digit kills in a match this season with her career-high 10 kills versus Duquesne (Sept. 15)... The Cardinals' junior outside attacking duo of Brooklyn Goodsel and Ellie Dunn have each blasted double digit kills in 11 matches this season, while Emily Holland is right behind at seven... Meg Starling has double digit kills in four matches this season, the first four of her career, while sophomore middle Sydnee VanBeek has accomplished the task three times. Ball State opened the Active Ankle Challenge with a dominating 25-7 opening set victory over Navy (Sept. 1)... The 25-7 set victory ties as the second-largest in the 25-point rally scoring era (2008-present) in program history... The only larger set victory was a 25-5 opening set win versus Tennessee State on Sept. 3, 2010 in another match Ball State swept at home. Four Cardinals finished the win over Indiana State (Aug. 26) with double digit kills; Brooklyn Goodsel (12), Ellie Dunn (10), Meg Starling (10) and Sydnee VanBeek (10)... It was the first time Ball State had four players log double digit kills in a three set match since Nov. 18, 2008 versus Eastern Michigan... The players involved in that match were Alisha Green (12), Julie Breivogel (11), Elaina Kakatolis (10) and Jennifer Boyd (10). With her 36 digs last weekend, sophomore libero Kate Avila raised her career total to 828... Avila is 86 digs shy of catching Kaylee Schembra s (2008-11) career total of 914 digs to break into the top 20 in program history... Avila has also collected 20-or-more digs in five matches this season, raising her career total to 14 matches which is seventh on Ball State s all-time charts. With her 33 kills last weekend, Brooklyn Goodsel raised her career total to 694... She needs 109 kills to catch Carin Zielinski s (1992-94) career total of 803 to break into the top 20 in program history. Sophomore setter Amber Seaman continues her climb up the Ball State record books, becoming just the 14th player in program history to eclipse 1,000 career assists versus Indiana State (Aug. 26)... With 704 assists so far this season, Seaman ranks 11th in program history with 1,676 career assists... She needs 674 more to catch Susan Franssen s (1987-90) career total of 2,350 for 10th on Ball State s career charts. 2017 QUICK FACTS BALL STATE UNIVERSITY: Location...Muncie, IN 47306 Founded...1918 Enrollment...22,513 Nickname...Cardinals Colors... HEAD COACH KELLI MILLER Kelli Miller completed her first season as head coach of the Ball State women s volleyball program in 2016, leading the team to a second-place finish in the Mid-American Conference West Division. After a tough start against some high caliber opponents in 2016, the team persevered and won 13 of its final 22 matches to finish the season with a 13-18 overall record. Ball State s 9-7 league ledger placed second in the MAC West Division and earned the squad the fifth seed in the conference tournament. The Cardinals were a few points shy of a top three seed, however, dropping tough five-set matches to No. 1 Northern Illinois and No. 3 Ohio. The 2016 Cardinals were led offensively by sophomore Brooklyn Goodsel who earned First Team All-MAC accolades after ranking seventh in league-only competition with a 3.19 kills-per-set average. Miller s first year also saw libero Kate Avila and middle Sydnee VanBeek earn MAC All-Freshman Team honors. In the classroom, the Cardinals were honored with the prestigious American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for finishing the academic year with a 3.48 team grade-point average. Two players, Avila and redshirt junior Sabrina Mangapora, earned perfect 4.0 GPAs for the year. In addition, seven Cardinals were named to the Academic All-MAC Team and three earned distinction as MAC Women s Volleyball Distinguished Scholar Athletes. Prior to her first season as head coach, Miller spent the previous six seasons as an assistant coach for the Ball State women s volleyball program. Kelli is an outstanding person who is definitely ready to lead our program, director of intercollegiate athletics Mark Sandy said upon her hire as head coach. I am confident she will be an excellent head coach. An AVCA Thirty Under 30 Award winner in 2016, Miller helped guide the Cardinals to a 119-68 (64-32 Mid-American Conference) record in her six seasons working under retired head coach Steve Shondell. During that time, Ball State won the 2010 MAC regular season championship, earned an at-large berth into the 2011 NCAA Tournament and captured the 2013 MAC West Division crown. I would like to thank Mark Sandy, Karin Lee and the rest of the administration for this fantastic opportunity, Miller said. I had the privilege of working with Steve Shondell over the past six years, and I am excited to take the lead and build upon the foundation he created. I look forward to developing our student-athletes on and off the court, and continuing the rich tradition of success Ball State women s volleyball has enjoyed. During her time as an assistant, Miller helped Ball State student-athletes earn 15 All-MAC First Team honors, five All- MAC Second Team accolades and three MAC All-Freshman Team awards. A former collegiate libero herself, Miller mentored then-senior libero Alyssa Rio to the 2010 Collegiate Volleyball Update (CVU.com) National Libero of the Year award. Rio finished her senior season ranked second nationally with a 5.86 digs-per-set average, and was a fourtime MAC West Division Defensive Player of the Week and a CVU.com National Player of the Week. Miller served as Ball State s defensive coordinator for her first three seasons, with the team ranking in the top three in the league in digs-per-set average all three years. She assumed the duties of both offensive and recruiting coordinator in 2013. Ball State s offense shined under her guidance, finishing first in the MAC and seventh nationally with a 14.84 kills-per-set average in 2013. In 2014, middle attacker Hayley Benson led the MAC in hitting percentage (.433) and was named an AVCA All-Midwest Region honorable mention. In 2015, Ball State s recruiting class was recognized as the top class in the MAC and one of the top 55 nationally by PrepVolleyball.com. Prior to coming to Ball State, Miller was a student/volunteer coach under Purdue head coach Dave Shondell during the 2009 season. While working with the Boilermakers, she was responsible for scouting opponent hitters, reception rotations and servers. In addition, she developed and implemented serve receive and defensive drills. Miller has also coached for the Munciana Volleyball Club as both a head and assistant coach. Prior to her coaching career, Miller was a four-year standout libero at Purdue from 2005-08. She finished her career as the program s all-time leader in digs (2,013) and digs-per-set average (4.05). A three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, Miller helped guide the Boilermakers to four NCAA Tournament appearances, including three trips to the NCAA Regional semifinals. All four teams she played on were ranked in the top-25 nationally, with her 2008 squad finishing the year at No. 15. A five-time Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, Miller collected a program-record 40 digs in a match against Indiana on Oct. 17, 2007. Over her career, Miller played in all 136 of Purdue s matches and in 496 of a possible 497 sets. She also ended her career as the only player in program history to record 30 or more digs in a match five times over her career. Prior to attending Purdue, Miller was a four-time all-state selection at Muncie Central High School. The No. 47 recruit in the country as listed in PrepVolleyball.com s senior aces, Miller helped guide the Bearcats to state titles as a sophomore and senior, with the team finishing as state runner-up her junior year. She led Muncie Central to four straight conference titles, all undefeated league seasons, and earned East Central Indiana Volleyball Player of the Year accolades as a junior. Miller also played club volleyball for Munciana, with her 13-under team finishing second nationally, while her 14-under team placed third. As a member of the Munciana Samurai 18-1 s, which was coached by Ball State alumnus Mike Lingenfelter, Miller was named to the All-America squad after helping guide her team to a runner-up finish at the USA Junior Olympics.
