The longest tenured coach in program history, Hayes is closing in on 200 wins at Bradley, needing 11 to reach the mark. Hayes also has a chance to earn her 100th career MVC victory this season, currently owning a school record 91 Valley victories during her time on The Hilltop. sitting them down Junior pitcher Julie Kestas earned two of Bradley s three victories at the season-opening Petersen Hotels Invitational, posting a 2-0 record in three appearances with a 3.20 ERA and a complete game shutout. Kestas, who struck out nine batters in a complete game shutout of Saint Louis in the season opener, has 17 strikeouts on the year with all 17 punchouts coming in her two starts. She is the first Bradley pitcher to strikeout 17 batters in her first three appearances since Ashley Birdsong fanned 27 hitters in her first three outings of the 2009 season. Last year, Kestas was second on the team with 72 strikeouts and led the team with 119.0 innings pitched. rare air Senior Maria Schroeder has gotten off to a hot start to her final season on The Hilltop, leading the team with a.400 batting average in addition to pacing the squad in runs (5), hits (6), doubles (2) and RBI (4). In the 8-0 victory against Saint Louis to open the season, Schroeder went 2-for-3 with two doubles, a walk, three runs and three RBI to join Natalie Quinn (1993-96) as the only players in program history with 100 career runs and 100 career RBI. Schroeder has had hits in four of five games this season and has scored or driven in nine of BU s 21 runs (43 percent) this season after accounting for 30 percent of the teams runs last year. 2018 Bradley Numerical Roster Putting up zero s In addition to a complete game shutout by Julie Kestas (vs. Saint Louis), Bradley also got a complete game shutout effort out of sophomore Emma Jackson against Miami (Ohio) at the Petersen Hotels Invitational. Bradley s two shutouts through five games match the team s total from each of the past two seasons. The last time the Braves had at least three shutouts in a season was 2014 (6) and BU had not posted a shutout in a season-opening game since 2007 (Green Bay), which was also the last time Bradley had a pair of shutout in the first five games of a season. Excluding the two games against #4-ranked Washington, Bradley pitchers have combined for a 3-0 record with a 1.47 ERA and have held hitters to a.182 average. putting it in neutral This weekend s trip to Las Vegas, Nev., marks the first five of 15 consecutive games away from home for the Braves. Last season Bradley won 18 games away from home (7 road & 11 neutral) for the team s most wins away from home since winning 21 road (9) or neutral site contests (12) in 2014. The Braves are scheduled to play 18 road and 16 neutral site games in 2018 with the road total the fewest for BU since 2015 (16) and the 16 neutral site outings the least since playing 13 in 2016. Bradley has posted a.500 record or better in neutral site games in six of head coach Amy Hayes nine seasons. ranked opponent Bradley faced fourth-ranked Washington twice in the season-opening Petersen Hotels Invitational, marking the highest ranked opponent for the Braves since facing then fourth-ranked Oregon on March 1, 2014 in Orlando, Fla. Bradley has two other games remaining on the schedule against teams currently ranked nationally in #14 Minnesota (Feb. 24) and #25 Kentucky (Feb. 24). heavy home schedule The 2018 Petersen Hotels Invitational kicked off a heavy home schedule for the Braves this spring. Bradley will play a total of 22 home games, which marks the most for the Braves since playing 25 home games in 2009 (included four MVC Tournament games). The 22 home contests would be the most regular-season home games since playing 25 regular-season home contests during the 2007 campaign. The Braves finished with a 16-9 home mark the last time they had as many as 20 home games (2009). In fact, Bradley has played 20 or more home games just three previous times with the 2007 (17-8) and 2000 (12-10) squads joining the 2009 team. what s back While Bradley lost a pair of NFCA First-Team All- Mideast Region selections in outfielders Kelly Kapp and Caitlyn McCarron, the Braves return a bulk of the lineup from last year s team which boasted one of the best slugging percentage s in program history. Highlighting a group which includes 11 returning letterwinners and a total of seven starting position players is NFCA Third- Team All-Mideast Region selection Maria Schroeder. A two-time Second-Team All-MVC selection, Schroeder was third on the team with a.319 average and her team-best 16 doubles ranked fifth among Bradley season marks. While the returning letterwinners combined for 60 percent of the team s hits and 65 percent of the runs, they accounted for a much larger percentage of the team s extra base hits with the group owning 46 doubles (74 percent), eight triples (62 percent) and 24 home runs (80 percent), while driving in 137 (73 percent) and drawing 85 percent of the team s 112 walks in 2017. leaving her mark The only player in program history to drive in 25 or more runs in three consecutive seasons, senior Maria Schroeder entered her final year on The Hilltop poised to rewrite the Bradley record book. A Third-Team NFCA All-Mideast Region pick last year, she hit.319 with team highs of 16 doubles and 19 walks, while ranking second on the team in runs (29) and RBI (38). Schroeder has hit two doubles this season and is currently fifth with 33 career two-baggers, 11 behind Kim Suffield s school record of 44. She has also climbed into sixth with 101 career RBI, while her 102 career runs ranks fifth all-time on The Hilltop. In addition to Schroeder s.332 career batting average ranking eighth at Bradley, she is also among the top 10 in school history in home runs (T8th), and needs just nine walks to break the career mark of 70 held by Bailegh Basham. Kim Suffield (1997-00) 57 first impression Sophomore Kealia Wysocki was a Second-Team All- Missouri Valley Conference selection last year after a big freshman campaign. Wysocki slugged a team-best seven home runs to tie the Bradley freshman home run mark originally set by Trish Kowalewski in 2005. Five of her seven homers came in MVC play, where she hit.288 and boasted a team-best.606 slugging percentage against Valley opponents. Two of her team-best four pinch hits on the year were homers and she collected 15 of her 22 RBI in conference action. Wysocki started 39 of the 49 games she appeared in and boasted a.327 average with four homers over the final 19 games. In fact, during that closing stretch she drove in a team-high 14 runs and owned a.673 slugging percentage. Her nine home runs tied for the ninth best season total in school history. Bradley Home runs by a freshman HR Name Year 7 Kealia Wysocki 2017 7 Trish Kowalewski 2005 6 Jacqueline Vitale 2006 5 Maria Schroeder 2015 5 Katie Habryle 2016 senior leadership A four-year starter in the middle infield senior Elizabeth Leonard has started all but six games in her career. After a slow start to the 2017 season in which she hit.224 with nine runs and three RBI in the first 17 games, Leonard regrouped to hit.318 (34-for-107) with 11 runs, 13 RBI and five stolen bases over the final 36 games of 2017. Leonard hit.295 in Missouri Valley Conference play with eight RBI. taking over in the circle Junior Julie Kestas emerged as Bradley s top starting pitcher last year as a sophomore, finishing the year with a 7-10 record with a 4.06 ERA. One of three returning pitchers for the Braves, Kestas led the team in appearances (35), starts (21), complete games (2), innings pitched (119.0) and held opponents to a team-low.264 batting average. In MVC action, Kestas made 13 starts and owned a 4-5 record with a 3.98 ERA. Kestas struck out 72 batters last year as she became the first Bradley underclassman to strike out 70 or more batters in a season since Madeline Lynch-Crumrine (2011 & 2012). In fact, only six BU pitchers (counting Kestas) over the last 20 years have fanned 70 batters or more as an underclassman with last three individuals ranking among the top four in career strikeouts on The Hilltop. schedule notes Tenth-year Bradley head coach Amy Hayes has traditionally put together tough schedules and 2018 will be no different with one-third of BU s games this spring against teams which advanced to the post-season in 2017. In fact, the Braves will play 35 of 54 games against teams which finished in the top half of the RPI last spring, which includes 17 of 22 home games. Top 100 teams from last year s RPI make up 25 of 54 games, including 13 of 22 home contests. Last year, Bradley played the 60th toughest non-conference schedule in the country and the team s overall schedule strength was 81st in the country. During Hayes nine years on The Hilltop, Bradley s non-conference strength of schedule has ranked in the top 100 in the nation five times (2017-60th, 2015-73rd, 2014-91st, 2012-64th & 2009-75th). long tenure Bradley Softball head coach Amy Hayes is in her 10th season as head coach of the Braves making her the longest tenured coach in program history and 2018 will be her 17th year as a collegiate head coach. Hayes has coached more games at Bradley (479) than any other coach in program history and she has the most games coached by a female coach on The Hilltop. In fact, her 479 games coached are fifth most in school history among all programs behind former tennis coach Tom Coker (488). up next Bradley will head to Orlando, Fla., for the Citrus Classic Feb. 23-25, where the Braves will face South Carolina, Purdue, #14 Minnesota, #25 Kentucky and South Alabama. The trip to Florida is the first for Bradley since 2016 and the Braves will play in the Orlando, Fla., area for the first time since 2015. Bradley has a 7-5 record against its opponents at the Citrus Classic. South Carolina has won both previous matchups, winning a game in Tampa, Fla., during the 1987 season in addition to a 2009 victory in Orlando, Fla. The Braves own a 5-2 edge in the series with Purdue, which includes a 3-1 neutral site record. Bradley will face the Boilermakers for the first time since 2006. The Braves have split two previous games with defending Big Ten Conference champion Minnesota, winning a 1985 meeting in Normal, Ill., and falling to the Golden Gophers in the 2003 Metrodome Classic. Bradley won the only previous matchup with Kentucky, edging the Wildcats 1-0 at a tournament in Carbondale, Ill., to open the 1998 season. South Alabama is the first of three first-time opponents on the schedule for Bradley, joining future foes Memphis and UMKC. 2018 MVC Standings as of Feb. 12 MVC Overall School W-L Pct. W-L Pct.
