Kentucky 1. National Attendance Leader Oklahoma set a program record for attendance last season and, if early indications prove true, another record should be set in 2007-08. After eight home games, OU s per game attendance average stands at 9,752, currently No. 3 in the nation for average home game attendance. The top two teams -- Tennessee and Connecticut -- have larger home seating capacities than OU s arena. Oklahoma was No. 4 in national attendance last season and No. 2 in the Big 12 Conference with an average of 10,437 in the seats for OU s 12 home games. Season Ticket Update The OU Athletics Ticket Office has sold 6,596 season ticket packages. The number breaks the record of 6,465 season tickets bought last season. Though reserved level season tickets have sold out, general admission season tickets remain and fans are encouraged to purchase them prior to the start of the season. GA season tickets are available for $115. Group and single game tickets became available Monday, Nov. 19. Single game tickets for home games are $8 for adults and $5 for youths (K-12). The Sooner fan base is one of the nation s fastest growing. The Oklahoma women s basketball team ranked No. 4 in attendance last season, averaging 10,437 fans. That was an increase of 37 percent from the 2005-06 season when Lloyd Noble Center games averaged 7,630, which was an increase of 35 percent over the previous season. One, to be one of the top three teams in field goal percentage defense, which OU was last season at No. 3. Two, is to cut down on turnovers and, specifically, be in the top three in assist-to-turnover ratio. The game, scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman, Okla. should provide another 12,000-plus crowd for a game televised by Fox Sports Net. Only restricted admission tickets remain. Restricted admission tickets are $8 and go on sale when doors open at 11:30 a.m. The ticket provides entry but does not guarantee a seat. The matchup in Stillwater was attended by 13,611 -- the most to watch a women s basketball game in the state of Oklahoma. D-ROB Big 12 Rookie of the Week For the fourth time this season, OU freshman Danielle Robinson was named rookie of the week. Robinson averaged 12 points and 6.5 steals per game in the Sooners two victories against Texas Tech and Georgia. Coale Most Fun to Watch OU head coach Sherri Coale was recently voted by members of the Women s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) as the Most Fun to Watch head coach in the nation. Benchmark Games Ahead Coale s 250th Victory Currently Sherri Coale has 246 victories in her 12th year as the head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners. Coale could reach her 250th victory as soon as Feb. 12, at home, against Texas A&M. Think Pink Week Fans should come out to support the Sooners in raising breast cancer awareness by coming to the Lloyd Noble Center for Think Pink Night as the OU women s basketball team hosts 2007 Big 12 Co-Champions Texas A&M on Tuesday, Feb. 12, at 7 p.m. 1,000th Game in Sooner History Oklahoma started its women s basketball program for the 1974-75 season and is approaching its 1,000th game. To date, the Sooners are 15 games shy of 1,000 in program history. Texas lost is star player Tiffany Jackson, but returned four starters from a team that beat the Sooners in Austin last season. Jackson has been replaced in the lineup by junior Ashley Lindsey, a slim 6-4 post, who has averaged 13 points and eight rebounds in conference play this season. Sophomore guard Brittainey Raven leads Texas with 15.6 points per game but the Longhorns success has depended mostly on the performance of point guard Carla Cortijo. Cortijo injured her shoulder just before the Big 12 schedule started and Texas opened the league 0-2. Without Cortijo in the starting lineup, Texas is 0-3. Gail Goestenkors is in her first season as head coach of the Texas Longhorns after guiding the Duke Blue Devils to 13 straight NCAA Tournament appearances that included four Final Fours. Her overall coaching record is 411-105 (.797). Sherri Coale and Goestenkors have squared off just once before when Oklahoma defeated Duke in the 2002 Final Four, 86-71, to advance to its only National Championship game appearance. THE All-Time SERIES Oklahoma and Texas are meeting for the 33rd time. Texas leads the overall series 20-12 and has a 11-3 advantage in Austin. The two teams met just six times before the formation of the Big 12 conference. UT captured the first five meetings. Since bi-annual play began (also the entire Sherri Coale era), the Longhorns hold a 15-11 edge over the Sooners. Oklahoma has captured four of the last five meetings with Texas. The four wins came by an average margin of victory of 13.5 points. The Sooners suffered a 67-62 defeat in Austin last year. Paris on Naismith, Wooden Midseason Lists For the third straight season, OU junior Courtney Paris highlights the Naismith Trophy and Wooden Award midseason candidate lists released during the last week of January. The Naismith midseason list recognized 20 possible candidates while the Wooden list had 31. Points in the Paris Coined by Nancy Lieberman after witnessing OU s dominating inside game against Georgia, Oklahoma opponents can forget about outscoring the Sooners in the paint thanks to the Paris twins. OU outscores opponents in the paint by an average of 42 to 21. Courtney supplies 13 per game (31 percent) in the paint while Ashley contributes seven points (17 percent) in the paint per game. Together the sisters average 20 points in the paint -- nearly as much as the entire opposing roster and 48 percent of OU s total. CP3 s D Lost in the marvel of Courtney Paris double-double streak is her stellar defense. Paris has had an equally remarkable season defending the post as she had held her opposing matchup to an average of 6.6. points, 4.7 rebounds and 34 percent field goal shooting. Collectively, the 17 starting post players Paris has faced have season averages of 9.9 points and 6.0 rebounds. Of those opposing players, only two have reached their respective season scoring averages and just one her rebounding average against Paris. Against Paris and the Sooners, Maryland s Crystal Langhorne, Tennessee s Nicky Anosike and Georgia s Tasha Humprhey have made just 5-of-29 (17 percent) field goal attempts. Double-Double Superlatives Talk about Courtney Paris double-double success gets stale, especially when she has had just three games in her career without one, the last being over 800 days ago. Consider this: Double Double-Double Paris has played eight career games in which she has reached 20 points and 20 rebounds. Double-Double Animal Style Paris has 24 career games in which she has reached a double-double and recorded five or more blocks. Burning Lots of Rubber With the speed and quickness Danielle Robinson flaunts, one can expect the Oklahoma freshman wears out shoes on a regular basis. The San Jose, Calif., native actually has quite a collection of over 50 sneakers -- and that number doesn t include dress shoes -- that she keeps in her dorm room in Norman. Oklahoma s Midcourt Taking Form If dealing with Paris twins, D-Rob and J-Plum weren t enough, the January successes of forward Nyeshia Stevenson and Amanda Thompson and increased playing time of Carlee Roethlisberger have given OU s opponents three extra triple-threats on which to focus. Thompson scored 13.1 points per game in seven January contests, up from 6.5 in her previous 21 starts. She also increased her defense as her blocks and steals per game to start the new year were nearly double that of her past one-and-a-half seasons. Stevenson played a career high 32 minutes against Kansas and led the Sooners in scoring for the first time in her career with 15 points. She also had a game-high five assists. Coale also leads in overall winning percentage.634 (130-75) to Fennelly s.620 (129-79). 51 Weeks...and Counting With Oklahoma s placement in the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Coaches Polls this week, the Sooners have appeared in both for 51 straight polls (including preseason polls). OU s record for consecutive Top 25 poll appearances is 59 in the AP (from week 11 of the 1999-2000 season to week 11 of the 2002-03 season) and 60 in the Coaches (from week 11 of the 1999-2000 season to week 13 of the 2002-03 season). Both stints including 26 consecutive weeks being ranked in the Top 10. OU also had a 19-week run in the Top 10 of the AP Poll and 20- week run in the Top 10 of the Coaches Poll over the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons. Oklahoma has fell out of the Top 10 of the AP Poll for the first time this season in week 10. The Sooners returned to the Top 10 of the Coaches Poll this week after falling out in Week 11. The Sooners spent the first three weeks of the season in the Top 10. RECAPPING KANSAS Nyeshia Stevenson scored 15 points, Courtney Paris extended her double-double streak to 79 games and the 11th-ranked Sooners routed Kansas 67-51 on Wednesday night, but it was a 25 in the turnover column that jumped off the stat sheet. Oklahoma could afford to be sloppy against the Jayhawks (12-8, 1-6 Big 12), who are tied for last place in the Big 12 with Missouri. The Sooners (14-4, 4-2) led by 13 at halftime despite committing 17 turnovers and coasted through the second half without improving much. A 13-1 run early in the second half put the game away, with Jenna Plumley s 3-pointer extending the Sooners lead to 50-27. Oklahoma s advantage eventually expanded to as much as 26 points before Kansas started whittling away late. The Sooners went 5-for-14 from 3-point range, a modest 36 percent but still an improvement following a 4-for-30 stretch over their previous three games. In their last game against Georgia, Oklahoma went without a 3-pointer for the second time this season. Before those two shutouts, it had been four years since Oklahoma failed to make a 3-pointer in a game. In exchange, Oklahoma matched its season-high in turnovers -- and everyone was to blame. Nine of the 10 Sooners players committed at least one turnover, with point guard Danielle Robinson leading the way with nine. Only Rose Hammond, who played the final 5 1/2 minutes, didn t turn the ball over. The sloppy play followed a strong two-game stretch in which the Sooners routed Texas Tech 78-39 and then beat No. 17 Georgia 65-57 and seemed to be getting back on track after suffering two early losses in Big 12 play. Paris had 10 points and 13 rebounds, but needed until there was only 4:37 remaining to reach double figures in points with a pair of free throws. Postgame Notes Oklahoma won its 10th straight game against Kansas and 21st consecutive versus an opponent from the Big 12 s North Division. OU s 17 first-half turnovers was a season high, topping the 15 first-half turnovers totaled against Tennessee (Nov. 15) and Arkansas State (Dec. 2). The 17 first-half turnovers were the most in a half by the Sooners since turning over 22 times in a 71-61 loss to George Washington in the first round of the 2003 NCAA Tournament (March 23). The Sooners shot 82 percent from the free throw line making it the third consecutive game OU has shot 75 percent or above. Oklahoma had four players reach double digits for the third consecutive game. It marks the twelfth time this season that four or more Sooners have reached double figures in a single game. Courtney Paris Paris recorded her 79th consecutive double-double. The junior has 84 double-doubles in 87 career games. Carlee Roethlisberger Roethlisberger had three steals in the first half, matching her previous single-game best. Nyeshia Stevenson Stevenson had three assists in the first half, surpassing her previous career single-game high of two. She finished the game with five. Stevenson finished the game with 15 points, marking the first time in her career to lead the Sooners. Amanda Thompson Thompson scored in double figures for the fifth time in the past six games (all in January). The only exclusion was a nine-point effort versus Baylor on Jan. 20. Jenny Vining Vining hit her first 3-point attempt of 2008, making her third field goal attempt of the game. Robinson broke out in OU s win against Illinois, scoring eight of her 14 points during a 16-3 run in the second half, lifting the Sooners to a 70-57 lead with 3:36 remaining. Robinson also had back-toback steals for layups in the stretch. The Sooners won, 77-67, as Robinson recorded a career high seven steals. Stevenson broke out with a 4-for-4 3-point effort to spark the Sooners in a victory against Mississippi State and hasn t looked back since. The Little Rock, Ark., native averages 8.4 points per game, fifth best on the team and most by a reserve. After starting the season opener, she has the OU s leading off-the-bench scorer in 15 of the last 17 games. Against Kansas, Stevenson led OU in scoring for the first time in her career with 15 points.

Paris has started against a player with equal or greater height on 24 occassions. Paris averages 18.7 points and 15.2 rebounds, just under career averages of 21.3 an 15.4, when the opposing team s starting forward/center is 6-4 or taller. Conversely, an opponent of equal or greater height to Paris averages just 9.5 points and 6.0 rebounds. Paris tallest matchup was 6-9 Alyssa DeHaan of Michigan State. DeHaan netted just 10 points and five boards against Paris as the Sooners rallied to win, 66-55, in their largest second-half comeback in program history. No. 3 s Company Courtney Paris scored a season high 28 points in a losing effort to Baylor, but the scenario of Paris as OU s leading scorer is becoming less common as the talent around her and the double- and tripleteaming defenses increase. Danielle Robinson s 20 points against South Carolina (Dec. 30) marked the fourth consecutive game in which a different Sooner was the team leader in points scored (Courtney Paris, 17 at Tulsa; Amanda Thompson, 14 at Michigan State; and Jenny Vining, 20 vs. Central Arkansas). This came after Ashley and Courtney Paris spent the first eight games of the season splitting games as the team s leading scorer with Ashley getting the honor three times and Courtney five. Danielle Robinson was OU s leading scorer against Iowa State (23) and Nebraska (22) and Amanda Thompson led at OSU with 18. Until this season, Courtney never missed two games without being her team s leading scorer until Ashley posted the high number in OU s two games in Cancun against Arizona State and Mississippi State. Last season, Courtney Paris was OU s leading scorer in all but five games. Jenna Plumley, Leah Rush and Chelsi Welch were the others that scored. During her freshman season, C. Paris led in all but five games with Rush, Welch and Erin Higgins also getting leading scoring honors during the year. The last time four different Sooners were the leading point scorers in consecutive games was during the 2003-04 season when it happened in games 3 through 6. Owning Up To THE Glass A number of jabs have been punched at Courtney Paris about how many of her rebounds are from her own missed shots. Only 27 (28 percent) of her total offensive rebounds come after her own missed field goal. Even if you subtracted those boards from her season total, she would average 13.7, well above the second best mark in the nation. Paris is also 13-for-19 (.684) from the free throw line following a foul on a offensive rebound or putback, with a 6-for-11 (.546) mark when it is from her own missed shot. A Perfect 10 Courtney Paris 10 points against South Carolina (Dec. 30) was a personal low, meaning she has never scored outside of double figures in her career. Only two other NCAA Division I players LaToya Thomas, Mississippi State (1998-2002) and Chandi Jones, Houston (2000-04) have finished their careers scoring in double figures in every game. The most double-figure scoring games was accomplished by Sophia Young of Baylor (2003-06), who scored 10 or more points in 130 of her 139 career games. Paris 10 points were 10.5 percent of OU s total 95 against South Carolina, marking her lowest percent contribution since her career began. However, Paris did manage to grasp 24 rebounds, two from her personal best and the second most in a single game by a Division I player this season. Phylesha Whaley (1997-2000), who played 116 games, is the OU career scoring leader with 2,187 points. Should OU once again make a run through the Big 12 Conference Tournament and NCAA Tournament, Paris could pass that mark by the season s end. Should Paris finish her career with her current scoring average of 21.3 points, she will destroy the previous record of 18.9 held by Whaley. Courtney Paris 2007 AP National Player of the Year 1,500 1,000 200 100 Courtney Paris is the only player in Big 12 and Oklahoma history to accumulate 1,500 points, 1,000 rebounds, 200 blocks and 100 assists in a career. 87 Games, 84 Double-Doubles Courtney Paris has collected 84 double-doubles in 87 career games. She has an active streak of 79 consecutive games with a double-double. The streak began with a 22-point, 24-rebound effort versus UCLA on Dec. 5, 2007, and will be 794 days old when OU meets Texas on Feb. 3, 2008. Happy Birthday, Record Paris double-double streak was born with a 22-point, 24-rebound effort against UCLA on Dec. 5, 2005. The streak celebrated its second birthday Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2007, as Oklahoma defeated Illinois. Courtney s 22 points and 14 rebounds pushed the streak to 68 consecutive games. Let s Go Streaking After review of the Mississippi State game by both institutions, Courtney Paris double-double streak was restored. Though it is widely believed that Courtney Paris owns both the NCAA women s basketball Division I records for career and consecutive double-doubles, those records are still being researched. However, the NCAA double-double records for men s basketball do exist. The longest men s double-double streak was 40 games by North Carolina s Billy Cunningham, which coincidentally began on the same day (Dec. 5), 43 years prior to Paris streak. The most career double-doubles by the men belongs to Tim Duncan, who recorded 87 in his four seasons at Wake Forest (1994-97). The top five men s records are below. Double-Double Success Rate Consistency perhaps is the most tangible trait that can be associated with Courtney Paris. Her standard is the double-double and, if and when, she fails to get her next, it will be a bigger story than when she next achieves it. Paris entered the contest two blocks from Jones record of 243 and counted five in the game to move past to 246. Paris, who has OU s single-season record with 119 blocks as a freshman (and is No. 2 on the single-season list with 111 blocks as a sophomore) currently has 286 career blocks. She and Jones are the only two Sooners ever to record 100 blocks. With a rate of 3.3 blocks per game and at least 38 games left in her career, Paris could break 400 career blocks by the time she leaves the college game. As a junior, Paris is averaging 15.2 boards, better than a 15.0 rate as a freshman. Paris has owned OU s offensive rebounds record since last season and took over as the No. 1 rebounder in the Sooners season opener. She passed Caton Hill for No. 1 on OU s defensive rebounding list with seven defensive boards versus Mississippi State (Nov. 27). Paris currently has 1,339 career rebounds with 454 coming off the offensive glass and 885 defensively. Against Georgia (Jan. 27) Paris passed Baylor s Sophia Young (1,316 during 2002-06) for the Big 12 Conference record for total rebounds. Young owns the league s career offensive rebounds (489) record. Paris claimed Young s Big 12 career record for defensive rebounds (827) with 10 in the game at Iowa State on Jan. 9. After some tense moments at takeoff, Vining relaxed and enjoyed the flight. The trip back to Norman was much easier on the Marshall, Ark., native. Vining s parents, Andrew and Gina, also made it to Chapel Hill for OU s season opener. However, mom and dad drove a 26-hour round trip. However, while these freshmen are very talented and will make their names known quickly, they do draw comparisons to some familiar faces. Danielle Robinson 5-9 G San Jose, Calif. Robinson was the Sooners surprise pickup of the 2007 recruiting class. After acknowledging OU was off her radar until her official visit, Robinson made the decision to be a Sooner before she checked her bags for the return flight home. The speedy guard will see time both on and off the point and draws comparisons to Dionnah Jackson. Carlee Roethlisberger 6-1 F Findlay, Ohio Having the third most recognizable surname speaks to the star power on the Sooners roster. Yes, Carlee is the sister of Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben, but she may the family s best athlete. Roethlisberger is leanest Sooner and the one with the greatest ceiling in terms of untapped basketball potential. Her play resembles another lean forward in former Sooner Leah Rush. Jenny Vining 5-9 G Marshall, Ark. This Arkansas high school star will remind fans of former Sooner Erin Higgins because of her 3-point range and accuracy, although Vining s may prove to be better in both cases. Head coach Sherri Coale says that Vining might be the best freshman she has ever coached because of her ability to quickly learn from mistakes and make correct adjustments in practice. Lauren Willis 5-11 G Overland Park, Kan. Willis was an all-stater in Kansas and walkedon to the OU program. She has been a stellar defender in practice as was quite the spark in OU s preseason intrasquad scrimmage as she went 3- for-3 from beyond the arc in limited action. Willis is the daughter of Steve Willis, a placekicker on Kansas State football s first ever bowl team, and the former Lois Groen, an All-American and Big Eight Conference track and field champion at Iowa State. C. Paris Big 12 Preseason POY For the second straight season, Oklahoma s Courtney Paris was named the Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year in the coaches vote. The 6-4 center, who averaged 23.5 points and 15.9 rebounds, was last season s Big 12 Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year after leading the Sooners to title defenses of the conference s regular season and tournament championships. Ashley Paris was an honorable mention for the All-Big 12 team. Sooners Picked Second in Big 12 The Oklahoma Sooners were picked to finish second in this season s Big 12 Conference women s basketball standings in a preseason poll voted by the league s coaches. Texas A&M, the 2006-07 Big 12 co-champions with Oklahoma, received seven of 12 first-place votes to edge the Sooners, who received five first-place votes, in a split decision between the two teams. Co u r t n e y Pa r i s Naismith, WA d e, W o o d e n C a n d i d at e Paris a Preseason Wooden Award Candidate Courtney Paris was named one of 30 preseason candidates for the 2007-08 Women s Wooden Award announced by the John R. Wooden Award committee Wednesday, Oct. 31. Paris, a two-time Wooden All-American, was also a preseason nominee last year and was one of 16 finalists for the 2007 Women s Wooden Award. Tennessee s Candace Parker was the 2007 recipient of the honor. The award is named for the three-time college basketball All-American, 1932 National Player of the Year and 10-time national championship coach John Wooden. Created in 1976, the John R. Wooden Award is the most prestigious individual honor in college basketball. It is bestowed upon the nation s best player at an institution of higher education who has proven to his or her university that he or she is making progress toward graduation and maintaining a cumulative 2.0 GPA. Previous winners include such notables as Larry Bird (1979), Michael Jordan (1984), Tim Duncan (1997), and last year s recipients, Kevin Durant of Texas and Candace Parker of Tennessee. Courtney Paris, one of two collegians playing for the USA Basketball Women s Senior National Team, swept through the FIBA Americas Zone Tournament in Valdivia, Chile, winning the gold medal against Cuba on Sept. 30 and, more importantly, clinching a berth for the United States in next year s Olympic Games. Paris was a role-player for the U.S., as one of very few post players her size in international basketball. She averaged nine minutes per game as the Americans went through the tournament undefeated at 5-0. It was Paris seventh gold medal as part of a USA Basketball team. Paris and U21 Team win World Championship Paris earned twice as much gold this summer as she helped the USA Basketball Women s Under 21 Team to a World Championship title in July. The U.S. defeated Australia, 96-73, in the title game in Moscow, Russia, to give Paris and Team USA its fourth straight gold in age-group basketball. Paris played 39 games with USA Basketball in age group contests and never lost. She averaged 10.9 points and 8.0 rebounds in eight contests during the World Championships. Red Bests White in Intrasquad Scrimmage The University of Oklahoma women s basketball team completed its intrasquad scrimmage Thursday night at the Lloyd Noble Center in front of 2,200 fans. Players split time between Red and White teams as they played four eight-minute quarters. The Red defeated White in three quarters and won the overall battle with a total score of 79-76. Each period was intense and down to the wire as the largest margin of victory in any quarter was four points. White got the best of Red in the first, 21-17, but Red bounced back with victories in the final three quarters (25-22 in the second, 12-11 in the third and 25-22 in the fourth.) Courtney Paris led the Sooners with 27 total points. She shot 9-of-16 (.563) from the field and added nine points at the free throw line. Paris missed a double-double by one rebound, but made contributions elsewhere with four assists and a steal in 27 minutes on the court. Nyeshia Stevenson scored 26 points and added three steals and two assists to her stat line as she took full advantage of her athletic ability in several fast breaks and one-on-one situations. OU s four freshman played with no fear as guards Danielle Robinson and Jenny Vining scored 14 points apiece, Lauren Willis shot 3-of-3 from beyond the arc for nine points and forward Carlee Roethlisberger totaled seven points and seven rebounds. Also scoring in double figures were Rose Hammond (15), Jenna Plumley (11) and Abi Olajuwon (11). Plumley, who played 31 of a possible 32 minutes, was effective running the point, shooting 3-of-9 from 3-point range and counting nine assists with just three turnovers. Ashley Paris had a game-high 12 rebounds and Amanda Thompson led with four steals. On Nov. 1, The Sooners routed NCAA Division II Henderson State 110-40 in front of 5,082 fans at the Lloyd Noble Center. The attendance was the fifth best in OU history for a women s exhibition game. The margin of victory (70) points, was two shy of OU s program record.
