The Vestas profile

The power of the wind The wind has been a key factor in world economy for thousands of years. However, the fundamental principle remains the same transforming wind energy into motion.

The population of the world is expanding rapidly as is global energy consumption. That is why the world needs more and more clean, renewable and competitive sources of energy. This is where the wind comes into the picture. Nature offers an unlimited supply of energy. The challenge is to use it properly and with respect for the environment. Wind power is a very competitive alternative to energy from fossil fuels. It also has another advantage wind turbines can be installed quickly and easily, wherever they are needed.

The Vestas vision Vestas is the world leader in wind technology and a driving force in the development of the wind power industry. Vestas core business comprises the development, manufacture, sale, marketing and maintenance of installations that use wind energy to generate electricity on the basis of the company vision: With quality and care, we use the wind to create competitive, environmentally friendly energy. Vestas began wind turbine manufacturing in 1979, and has played a major role in the dynamic wind power industry ever since. Through decades of involvement in all aspects of this industry, Vestas has built up a wealth of experience and expertise which are used to the benefit of customers worldwide. Vestas devotes appreciable resources to optimising research and development, production, assembly, logistics, performance and service.

Vestas remains fully committed to its core business establishing all kinds of wind power installations: from single installations to complete turnkey wind power plants, onshore and offshore. That is why Vestas does not develop, finance or operate wind farms, preferring instead to take act as a strong and independent partner, offering support and guidance at every stage of a wind power project. Vestas growth has firm roots and the power of the wind has shaped the Vestas profile

The Vestas way

Vestas considers it natural to manufacture the key components of its wind turbines itself. This makes Vestas highly flexible and capable of reacting swiftly and competently when it comes to innovation and development of the wind power plants of the future. In addition, this approach allows Vestas to maintain its comprehensive pool of know-how concerning blades, software and control systems know-how that has been built up from years of intensive research and development. When establishing new factories, Vestas carries out what are known as technology transfers to make sure that the new facilities mirror existing Vestas organisations. By transferring technology in this way, Vestas ensures that its wind turbines are always of the same high quality no matter where in the world they may be produced. The manufacture of some components has been outsourced to subcontractors with whom Vestas works closely to ensure the same high quality at all times.

Development for the future The experience gained from installing thousands of turbines all over the world has provided Vestas with a strong base for future development and growth. Vestas is renowned for its advanced technology, which is tested at a full-scale test centre. For example, life expectancy tests are carried out on critical components such as gears and generators. This allows Vestas to test current and prototype turbine components under extreme conditions. Over the years, Vestas has supplied the wind power industry with a range of innovations such as the OptiTip, OptiSlip and OptiSpeed * concepts, which allow the regulation of Vestas wind turbines blades to match wind conditions thus ensuring uniform power quality and optimal power production. In fact, it could be said that innovation is a Vestas trademark. *) Vestas OptiSpeed is not available in the USA and Canada.

In the same way as all aspects of Vestas Technology, these concepts have been verified by independent experts and in full-scale an approach we call Proven Performance. Vestas constantly invests in research and development because the future is the greatest challenge. Vestas continuously strives to develop competitive wind turbines, transport solutions and control systems. The overriding aim is to develop the right turbines for the right sites onshore and offshore. Working with wind power involves balancing nature and technology. The wind provides the power to do the job, and Vestas supplies the technology to do it the Vestas way.

Global experience, local expertise

At Vestas global experience and local expertise go hand in hand. Over the years, Vestas has built up a worldwide sales and service network. As a result, working relationships with turbine owners do not end with delivery. On the contrary, the final delivery of a turbine marks the beginning of close collaboration over a period of at least 20 years. In short, Vestas cares for its turbines, no matter where in the world they may be. The combination of global experience and local expertise ensures that Vestas remains a truly trustworthy partner.
