The Griffs will play at Bentley with games scheduled for Friday and Saturday at 7:05 p.m. OFFENSE FIRING ON ALL CYLINDERS 4 During the month of December, the Griffs offense was at its best, scoring 25 goals in just four games. 4 The 6.25 goals per game are the second-most in any month since the program moved to Division I. 4 The highlight for the Canisius offense was scoring nine goals against Bentley, the most for the Griffs since 2001. 4 Canisius and Colgate also combined for 13 goals in the Highest Scoring Months Month GPG March 1999 6.40 December 2009 6.25 October 2001 5.50 Griffs 7-6 victory on Dec. 20, the most in a Canisius game since Jan. 8, 2000. 4 The Griffs have scored at least four goals in four-straight games for the first time since the 2000-01 season. Canisius has also netted at least four goals in nine of its last 12 games. 4 Canisius has scored at least five goals in three-consecutive contests for the first time since the 1998-99 campaign. 4 The Griffs currently lead all Atlantic Hockey teams and rank 12th nationally with a 3.40 scoring offense this season. NO LEAD IS SAFE 4 Another common theme in Canisius games during the month of December was a struggle for teams to close out games. 4 During the month, the team leading with five minutes remaining was just 1-2-1. 4 Canisius led Bentley 4-3 before losing 5-4 and led Robert Morris 5-3 before a 5-5 draw. The Griffs also rallied from a 6-4 deficit to defeat Colgate in overtime, 7-6. The only lead that was safe was Canisius 9-3 advantage over Bentley. LET S GO STREAKING! 4 Senior defender Carl Hudson and junior Cory Conacher have led the Canisius attack as both players have tallied a point in a career-best eight-straight games. 4 Their streaks are the longest by a Griff since Chris Duggan finished the 2001-02 season by tallying a point in 15-straight games. 4 Hudson s run is the longest by a Canisius defender in the program s Division I history. Daryl Pierce held the previous standard by registering a point in six-straight games from January 11 to January 31, 2003. Hudson has also netted a goal in a career-best four-straight games. 4 Sophomore Scott Moser (four games) and freshman Torrey Lindsay (three games) also have active personal-best streaks. GRIFFS FINISH NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULE STRONG 4 Canisius wrapped up its non-conference play in its last two games, tying CHA member and future Atlantic Hockey rival Robert Morris and defeating ECAC foe Colgate. 4 The Griffs win against Colgate marked the program s second-ever victory against an ECAC team. Canisius is now 2-5-1 all-time against the conference, including a 2-0-1 mark during the last two seasons. 4 Canisius also defeated Ferris State earlier in the season for their second all-time victory against a CCHA team. 4 The Griffs and Bentley are the only two Atlantic Hockey schools to defeat a team in two other conferences this season.

It marked the first time in Canisius history that the Griffs lost to a single team six times in a season. 4The Falcons eliminated Canisius in the Atlantic Hockey Quarterfinals last season, winning the series 2-1. Bentley won the first game, 6-3, but Canisius would force a third game with a 7-3 victory. The Falcons clinched a semifinal berth with a 4-2 win. 4The teams split a two-game series earlier this season in Buffalo. Bentley rallied for a 5-4 victory in the opener before Canisius dominated the finale, 9-3. Junior Cory Conacher matched a school record with five points (1g, 4a) in the victory. 4Canisius first win at the Division I level came against Bentley, defeating the Falcons 6-2 on Oct. 16, 1998. The Griffin is a mythical creature of supposed gigantic size that has the head, forelegs and wings of an eagle and the hindquarters, tail and ears of a lion. They are well known for their speed, ability to fly and having eyes like an eagle as well as the strength and courage of a lion. Griffins have been known for centuries as symbols of strength and vigilance, have been called The Hounds of Zeus in Greek mythology and are said to have mastery of both the land and sky. They are thought to be from India, where the natives of the land made their talons and claws into drinking cups because the talon of a Griffin was said to detect poison in a liquid. Griffins would find gold in the mountains and line their nests with it and as a result, were forced to become great guardians of the nests to keep the hunters away. His 13 tallies are tied for the most by any Griff through 18 games in a season. 4Conacher has added 14 assists for 27 points, the secondbest start in the program s history. Chris Duggan recorded 32 points in the first 18 games of the 1998-99 season. 4The junior has already posted seven multi-point games this season and three multi-goal contests. SCARSELLA LENDS THE HELPING HAND 4Junior Vincent Scarsella was also strong in the first half of the season and has been even better as of late. 4The junior is currenlty on pace for a career year with 23 points, eight goals and 15 assists. 4In his last three games, Scarsella has tallied eight points (4g, 4a). 4Scarsella is currently tied for first in Atlantic Hockey and ranks 11th nationally this season with his 15 helpers. 4For his career, Scarsella places fifth in school history with 57 assists and is just one shy of fourth in the program s record book. HUDSON SETS POWER PLAY RECORD 4 Ever since his first career game at Canisius, senior Carl Hudson has proven that he is a dangerous threat on the power play. 4 Hudson, who scored two power play goals in his first collegiate game versus Robert Morris, netted his 23rd career extra-man goal against the Colonials on Dec. 15, setting the program s Division I record. 4 The senior surpassed the total set by former teammate Michael Cohen, who scored 22 power play goals from 2003 to 2007. 4 Hudson has scored 63.9 percent of his career goals with the extra-man advantage (23-36). 4 Hudson currently leads all Atlantic Hockey defenders with 19 points (6g, 13a) this season. 4 Of his 19 points, 12 have come on the power play (3g, 9a). His 12 power-play points are the most among all players in the conference. FIRST-PERIOD IMPORTANCE 4 The Griffs have found out very early this season that it is important to get out to a quick start. 4 Canisius is 7-0-1 when leading at the end of one period this season. On the reverse side, Canisius is 0-7-1 when trailing heading into the first intermission. 4 The Griffs have allowed at least two goals in the first period in eight of their nine losses this season. 4 Canisius is outscoring teams 12-2 during the opening frame in games it wins. In losses, the Griffs are being outscored 17-4. Griffs Through 18 Games Goals Year Goals 1. Cory Conacher 2009-10 13 Chris Duggan 1998-99 13 3. David Deeves 1998-99 12 Points Year Points 1. MASTER OF ALL TRAITS 4 Jason Weeks is not content to rank among the best in school history in just one category. Weeks aims to put his name in the record book in a number of different categories. 4 Following his four-point performance against Colgate, Weeks is closing in on a number of career milestones. 4 Weeks, who currently ranks in the top 10 of five different categories in the school s Division I record book, has totaled 97 career points. 4 He is just three points shy of becoming the fifth player in school history to reach the 100-point plateau. 4 The senior has also netted 46 career goals and is just three shy of the program s Division I record, set by David Deeves from 1998 to 2002. 4 Weeks also places eighth in career assists (51), fourth in career power play goals (16) and first in career short-handed goals (six). 4 This season, Weeks has totaled 12 points on five goals and seven assists in 18 games. MORRISON AND LOEWEN RECORD SHUTOUTS 4 Sophomore Dan Morrison and senior Andrew Loewen have each taken their turn anchoring the Canisius defense during the 2009-10 season. 4 Morrison has recorded three shutouts during his sophomore campaign, the second-most in the country this season. Only Denver s Marc Cheverie has blanked a team more with five. 4 Morrison s three shutouts are also tied for the most in the program s Division I history, while his four career clean slates are tied for third. 4 Morrison recorded 48 saves in a 1-0 victory over CCHA foe Ferris State on Oct. 10. 4 The 48 saves are the most by a Griff in a shutout, topping the previous mark of 46, set by Sean Weaver on Feb. 4, 2000. 4 Loewen registered his first shutout of the season in a 4-0 blanking of AIC. 4 The shutout marked the sixth for the senior during his career, tying the program s all-time Division I record. Bryan Worosz also recorded six shutouts (2001-05). Weeks in the Division I Record Book Career Points G A Pts 3. Josh Heidinger (2006- ) 33 74 107 4. Michael Cohen (2003-07) 42 58 100 5. CONACHER NAMED ATLANTIC HOCKEY PLAYER OF THE MONTH 4 Junior Cory Conacher was named the Atlantic Hockey Player of the Month in November after leading the Canisius offense. 4 Conacher recorded a team-best 13 points, eight goals and four power-play tallies during the month, helping the Griffs to a 5-3-1 record. 4 His highlights during the month included scoring the game-winning goal on a penalty shot versus Mercyhurst with just 5:36 remaining. He also posted his best collegiate weekend against AIC, registering six points, four goals and two assists in a sweep. 4 Conacher finished the month by scoring a goal in four-straight games, the longest streak in his career. CONACHER MATCHES A PAIR OF SCHOOL RECORDS 4 Cory Conacher picked up in December right where he left off in November, matching a pair of school records. 4 In the Griffs 9-3 victory versus Bentley, Conacher set career highs with five points, netting the game-winning goal and adding four assists. 4 Conacher became the third player in the school s Division I history to record five points in a single game. Chris Duggan (March 13, 1999) and Mike Ruberto (Oct. 9, 2005) also accomplished the feat. 4 Conacher also tied the program s record with four assists in a game, matching the standard set by four players -- Duggan (March 13, 1999), Joel Tarvudd (Jan. 8, 2000), David Deeves (Nov. 2, 2001) and current teammate Jason Weeks (Nov. 1, 2008). 4 Earlier in the season, Conacher also matched a school record by recording the ninth hat trick in the program s Division I history. GRIFFS EARN FIRST SWEEP VERSUS MERCYHURST 4 The Griffs two wins against Mercyhurst was a historic first for the Canisius College hockey program, marking the first time that the Griffs swept a weekend series from their rivals. 4 Canisius has played Mercyhurst more than any other school in program s history. The sweep was the first for the Griffs in the 60-game, 21-year series. 4 The Griffs also won consecutive games for the first time against the Lakers since Dec. 2, 1996 and Jan. 19, 1996. Canisius needed to play Mercyhurst 39 times at the Division I level before winning consecutive games in the rivalry. DUO SCORES FIRST COLLEGIATE GOAL 4 Freshmen Ben Parker and Preston Shupe scored their first collegiate goals in a win over AIC. 4 Shupe leads all Canisius freshmen on the team with 13 points, two goals and 11 assists. 4 He is currently tied for first among Atlantic Hockey rookies with his 13 points. Shupe also ranks 23rd in the country among freshmen with 0.65 points per game. 4 The point was the second in Parker s career. The defenseman also added an assist in his second career game against Ferris State. OFFENSIVE OUTBURST 4Canisius got out a lot of frustration in a 9-3 victory over Bentley on Dec. 5. 4The Griffs dominating victory not only ended the team s three-game losing streak but also ended Bentley s hold over Canisius. The Falcons had won 7-of-8 meetings in the last two seasons. 4The nine goals for Canisius are tied for the second most in the program s Division I history and the most since a 9-2 win over Bentley on Nov. 2, 2001. 4Junior Cory Conacher tied school records with five points and four assists in the victory to lead the Canisius offense. 4In total, seven Griffs scored a goal in the win, while 13 players registered a point. ZUKE ADDS ANOTHER OPTION 4 Junior Matt Zuke is making his move back to forward a successful one. 4 Zuke, who started his freshman season as a forward but played the next season and a half as a defender, netted a goal in three-straight games from Dec. 4 to Dec. 15. 4 The three goals in his last four games are two more scores than Zuke had in his first 55 career contests. KOSTUCH REGAINS ROOKIE FORM IN NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER 4 After a slow start to the 2009-10 season, Dave Kostuch quickly diminished any talk of a sophomore slump during the months of November and December. 4 The 2008-09 Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Year, Kostuch opened the season by recording only one assist in five October games. However, the sophomore has responded by netting seven goals and adding three assists in the last 13 games in November and December. GRIFFS RECEIVE FIRST NATIONAL VOTE 4 Following Canisius split against CCHA foe Ferris State, Canisius earned a vote in the USCHO.com/ CBS College Sports Division I poll. 4 The vote was the first for the Griffs in the program s history.

He has played in all 20 games for the Griffs this season, scoring two goals and adding seven assists. RETURNING OFFENSIVE FORCE 4 The Griffs return four players in Jason Weeks, Cory Conacher, Josh Heidinger and Dave Kostuch that all posted at least 30 points during the 2008-09 season. 4 It marks the first time since moving to Division I that Canisius returns four players that had posted at least 30 points the previous season. 4 Canisius is also one of just four schools in the country this season to return four 30-point scorers. The three other schools are preseason top-ranked Denver, No. 8 Yale and RIT. 4 In total, Canisius returns 87 percent of its scoring from last season and all three goaltenders. RETURNS EXPERIENCED CLUB 4The Griffs welcome back one of the most experienced teams in the country this season. 4Canisius returns 22 letterwinners from the 2008-09 season, 18 of which are upperclassmen. 4The 18 returning upperclassmen this season are the most of any team in the country. Massachusetts-Lowell, Princeton and Vermont all rank second with 17 returning upperclassmen. 4Of the 18 returning upperclassmen, eight are seniors and 10 are juniors this season. MACDOUGALL RETURNS AS TEAM CAPTAIN 4For the second-straight season, senior Peter MacDougall will serve as the team s captain. 4MacDougall is the fifth Griff to wear the C in two different seasons since the program moved to the Division I level. 4During the 2008-09 campaign, MacDougall appeared in all 37 games and recorded a career-high 11 points (2g, 9a). 4Seniors Dave Cianfrini and Josh Heidinger will serve as the team s assistant captains. Heidinger will wear the A for the second-consecutive season. GRIFFS SLATED TO FINISH FIFTH 4Canisius was picked to finish fifth in the annual Atlantic Hockey preseason poll. 4The Griffs picked up 53 points in the poll, just one point behind fourth-place Holy Cross. 4Two-time defending league champion Air Force was picked to win the league, earning 8-of-10 first-place votes. Mercyhurst, the 2008 and 2009 runner-up, was picked second and received the other two first-place votes. 4The Griffs finished the 2008-09 season in fifth place. Most Returning Upperclassmen 1. Adams and Scott Gray join the Canisius coaching staff in 2009. 4Adams joins the Griffs after spending the last three seasons as a player/coach with the Port Huron Icehawks. Adams will serve as the recruiting coordinator and will work closely with the Griffs defensemen. 4Gray is a recent graduate of New England College and his main focus will be with the goaltenders. 4Sean Schmidt also joins the Griffs from Ferris State as the team s equipment manager. EIGHTEEN GRIFFS EARN ACADEMIC HONORS 4 The Griffs were not only successful on the ice last season, but the Canisius hockey team succeeded in the classroom. 4 A total of 18 Canisius student-athletes were named to the Atlantic Hockey All-Academic Team following the 2008-09 season. The Griffs 18 selections are the most in the program s history. NIAGARA AND ROBERT MORRIS TO JOIN ATLANTIC HOCKEY 4 The Atlantic Hockey Association will have a new look next season. Niagara and Robert Morris are both set to join the league beginning next season. 4 The two teams are current member of the CHA. 4 Canisius and Niagara are local rivals and compete annually in the Battle of the Bridge series. Niagara holds an 8-5-1 edge in the series since the two teams moved to Division I. 4 The Griffs and Colonials have split four all-time meetings with each team winning twice. 4 Beginning in the 2010-11, Atlantic Hockey will have 12 competing teams. The league will remain one league but will be spit into geographical divisions for schedule purposes only. Canisius will play each team in its own division three times and teams from the other division twice.

During the 2008-09 season, Smith led the Griffs to a number of firsts, which garnered national attention. Canisius swept a pair of games against eventual NCAA quarterfinalist and 15th-ranked Air Force, marking the first victories for the Griffs against a nationally-ranked opponent. Canisius also earned its first wins against a CCHA and ECAC school during the season. On an individual level, Dave Kostuch led all freshmen nationally in goals per game, earning Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Year accolades. His first full recruiting class earned 12 league honors during the 2006-07 season, including 10 Rookie of the Week honors, which were the most of any Division I school in the country, while Smith s second recruiting class included the top two scoring freshmen in Atlantic Hockey. At least one player in each of Smith s four years has been named to the Atlantic Hockey All-Rookie Team. The Griffs have set or tied 17 school records under Smith s leadership, including seven during the 2008-09 season.
