After facing a three-run deficit, the Pack scored a pair of late runs in the top of the seventh inning, but the rally fell just short. April Visser went yard for the second time in the past three games as she hit a home run with one out in the top of the second inning. She went 3-for-4 overall on the outing with the home run, an infield single in the top of the sixth and a two-rbi single in the top of the seventh. The freshman batted in three of the Pack s four runs on the night, tying her career high in RBIs and setting a new career best in hits. NC State in the acc As a team, the Pack ranks fourth in the ACC with its 48 home runs on the season. That number stands in the top 30 in the nation at No. 26. The squad averages 1.09 home runs per game, which also ranks fourth in the conference. Brigette Nordberg s 14 homers are the third-most hit by an ACC player on the year. Going into the weekend series, NC State is second in the ACC in strikeouts as the pitching staff has fanned a combined 282 batters in its 44 games during the 2019 season. The Pack ranks sixth in the ACC in team ERA (3.12), led by Sydney Nester (3.03) and Devin Wallace (3.16). Both pitchers rank in the top 10 in the conference in strikeouts. Wallace ranks fifth in the ACC with 135 punch outs, and Nester s 132 strikeouts rank sixth in the league. HOME RUN MINDSET After hitting four home runs in its past three games, NC State s season total is up to 48 long balls on the year with 11 games left to play in the regular season. That number ranks eighth in program history in single-season home runs, and the Pack needs just two more to tie and three more to take ownership of seventh in progam history. one more win At least one win on the weekend would give NC State its most single-season victories since the 2015 season when it won 38 games and reached an NCAA Super Regional. STARTING STRONG The Pack has been the first to score in 19 of its 44 games this season and is a perfect 19-0 when scoring first in an outing. NC State has gotten on the board during the first inning of 15 games this season and has gone on to secure the win in 13 of those 15 games. russ reaching base From Feb. 17, to March 27, Sam Russ reached base safely on a hit, walk or hit-by-pitch in all 22 games. That number is good for the longest such streak on the team this year and was the second-longest streak in program history. on deck NC State will return home for the remainder of the regular season, beginning with a packed next week of action at Dail Softball Stadium. The Pack hosts NC Central (April 23) and Campbell (April 24) for midweek matchups before welcoming Virginia to Raleigh for a weekend series. our new leader Jennifer Patrick-Swift s is in her first year as the leader of the Pack. She was hired on June 2, 2018, after seven seasons at the helm of Saint Francis, and is the third head coach in program history. Under Coach Patrick-Swift s leadership, a #HomeRunMindset has been instilled among the team. It s the mindset, along with the fundamentals to produce the maximum power out of one s swing, that every player can hit a home run every time they go up to bat. In her final season at Saint Francis (2018), the Red Flash led the nation in home runs with 83 heading into the NCAA Tournament. BACK IN THE RANKINGS Thanks to its strong showing in Tampa on opening weekend, the Wolfpack entered the top 25 on Feb. 12, 2019, for the first time since Jan. 26, 2016, as it checked in at No. 23 in Softball America s first regular season poll of the year. In the 2016 preseason NFCA/USA Today and ESPN.com/USA Softball polls, NC State was ranked 23rd and 25th, in respective order. The last time NC State was ranked in a regular season poll was on March 10, 2015, when it was ranked 25th in both polls after a sweep over then-no. 23 Notre Dame. 2019 ROSTER The team returns 10 players from last season, including six that spent a majority of the time in the starting lineup. Additionally, the team has seven newcomers (four transfers, three freshmen) that make up this year s squad. KEY RETURNERS Chandley Garner, Angie Rizzi and Devin Wallace are among the team s top returners from last season. The three made a combined 135 starts with 147 total appearances. Garner returns as the team s top hitter and infielder from 2018. She led the team in home runs (11) and slugging percentage (.560), and owns the best batting average from 2018 among this year s top returners (.276). Rizzi is the team s top outfielder among the returners, starting 52 games in left and right field. At the plate she collected 34 hits and scored 19 runs, which ranks top five among the 2018 squad. Wallace was the go-to pitcher in 2018, throwing 194.2 of the team s 349.0 innings. She led the squad with 11 wins, including three shutouts, and 15 complete games. She compiled a 3.34 earned-run average through 40 game appearances. KEY NEWCOMERS Freshman Sydney Nester is poised to lead the Pack s pitching staff this season, as she comes to Raleigh with a strong resume. Ranked 22nd by FloSoftball among 2018 recruits, she was a two-time MaxPreps All-American and named Virginia Gatorade Player of the Year in 2016. Junior transfers Skylar Johnston and Brigette Nordberg bring a wealth of collegiate experience to NC State after two seasons at their respective schools. Johnston, who came from Fordham, helped the Rams to a pair of Atlantic 10 conference championships and automatic NCAA Regional berths. Nordberg came from Maryland after finishing top four in 10 offensive categories for the Terrapins in 2018. The two own a combined 180 career starts.
