FLETCHER S TREY PART OF SPORTSCENTER S TOP 10 Tre Shaun Fletcher game-winning shot at Detroit Mercy received national attention as it was ranked No. 2 on ESPN s SportsCenter Top 10 plays later that evening. Fletcher hit a three-pointer from the wing at the buzzer after the Titans had tied the game with 2.6 seconds remaining with a pair of free throws. The shot earned Fletcher some redemption after the senior guard had inadvertently committed a foul to send the Titans to the charity stripe. Nate Navigato ran the baseline after the two free throws and was able to find Fletcher. Fletcher then turned took one dribble to his right before knocking down a fadeaway trey from right in front of the Rocket bench. The play was similar to when former Rocket Juice Brown hit a three-point field goal vs. Buffalo in the 2014-15 campaign. Two of UT s homecourt setbacks last year were in overtime with another defeat coming by a 74-72 margin to Northern Illinois. UT posted a 12-4 record on its home court last year, a 9-6 mark in 2015-16, a 10-5 ledger in 2014-15 and a perfect 15-0 mark in 2013-14. The Rockets unbeaten record (15-0) at home in 2013-14 was their first since 1966-67 and just the fourth time in school history UT has accomplished the feat. ROAD WARRIORS The Rockets possess a 35-36 (.493) win-loss mark in their last 71 games on enemy courts (dating back to Jan. 30, 2013). UT s success on the road is a welcome departure from a four-year stretch (2007-11) that saw the Rockets win just one true road game out of 63 contests. Included during that period was a 47-game road losing streak that ended on Nov. 20, 2011 at Texas-Pan American. HORIZON FAMILIARITY Toledo has faced at least three Horizon League members in non-conference play over the last six years and faced four for a third consecutive year this season. The Rockets are 17-10 vs. the Horizon League during this stretch, including a 10-4 mark over the last three seasons. Prior to taking over at the Rocket helm, Head Coach Tod Kowalczyk spent eight seasons coaching in the Horizon League at Green Bay. LITTLESON TO HIT COURT IN 2018-19 Sophomore guard Spencer Littleson transferring Toledo from Duquesne University last spring. He will become eligible to play for UT in the 2018-19 campaign and has three years of eligibility remaining. Littleson earned first-team Associated Press Class A all-state honors and finished third in the voting for 2016 Michigan Mr. Basketball at Rochester Adams High School. He averaged 25.1 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.2 assists and 2.0 steals per game with a 41.2 three-point field-goal percentage in leading the Highlanders to an 18-6 win-loss mark and the Class A regional championship. Littleson finished his career as the school record-holder for points in a season (502 as a senior), three-pointers in a season (72 as a senior), free throws in a game HITTING THE BOOKS Toledo received the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Team Academic Excellence Award last summer, marking the third time in the four years the Rockets have received the award. UT was one of just two Mid-American Conference schools to be honored and is one of 12 schools in the nation to achieve this accomplishment on three occasions in the last four years. The Team Academic Excellence Award recognizes NCAA and NAIA men s basketball teams that earned a cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.0 or better throughout the 2016-17 academic year. Fifty-one of the 211 teams to make the list were NCAA Division I-affiliated programs. HITTING THE BOOKS II Toledo received NCAA Public Recognition for its classroom commitment last spring as part of the NCAA s Academic Performance Program. The Rockets most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) was 990 which ranked among the Top 10 percent in the nation. A total of 44 Division I programs received public recognition in men s basketball, with the Rockets being the lone representative from the Mid-American Conference.

Toledo Men s Basketball Game Notes - page 9 WORKING OVERTIME Toledo tied a national record last year with eight overtime games that was held by Western Kentucky (1978), Portland (1984) and Valparaiso (1993). UT s previous record for overtime games was five in the 1971-72 campaign. Toledo held a lead of at least seven points at some point in each of its overtime contests and let double-digit second-half leads slip away in half of them. VALUABLE EXPERIENCE FOR ROCKETS IN TRIP TO ITALY The Rockets returned to Europe for the first time in four years with a trip to Italy over the summer. UT previously traveled to Greece prior to the 2013-14 campaign, a season that resulted in Toledo winning the MAC regular-season title. The Rockets emerged victorious in each of their four games. UT played its first two games in Rome against Serbian club team, KK Kolubara, in Rome on Aug. 11-12 before squaring off against a team of professionals from Spain in Montecatini (near Florence) on Aug. 14. Toledo s game schedule concluded with a final matchup vs. an Italian All-Star squad at the United States Army Base in Vicenza Aug. 16. During their time in Italy, the Rockets ventured to historic sites and visited some amazing places in Rome the Ancient Colosseum, the Ancient Roman Forum, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, Vatican City and St. Peter s Basilica. The team then visited the beautiful cities of Florence and Venice and took a day trip to the Dolomite Mountains (located near the southern Alps). BENCH ADJUSTMENTS Head Coach Tod Kowalczyk announced the promotions of Jason Kalsow and Kyle Barlow to associate head coach and assistant coach, respectively, last summer. Kowalczyk also added a pair of former Rockets, Justin Ingram and Jordan Lauf to his coaching staff in the roles of Director of Operations and Graduate Assistant Coach. Kalsow has served as an assistant coach at Toledo for the last seven years, while Barlow has served as the Rockets director of operations the last three years. Ingram spent the 2016-17 season as an associate head coach at Olivet (Mich.) College after playing professionally overseas in France, Hungary, Estonia, Greece and Switzerland. He was inducted into UT s Varsity T Hall of the Fame and is tied for 10th on the Rockets all-time scoring list. Lauf concluded his UT career last year by posting a team-high 59.0 field-goal percentage, ranking second on the team with 6.2 rpg and averaging 8.3 ppg. KOWALCZYK RECEIVES DONATE LIFE CHAMPION AWARD Head Coach Tod Kowalczyk received the Donate Life Champion Award from Donate Life America in October. The Donate Life Champion Award recognizes members of the sports/athletic community who have had a significant impact on organ, eye and tissue donation. A few of the past Donate Life Champion Award recipients include the NBA s Michael Jordan, the NFL s Boomer Esiason, the PGA s Erik Compton, Olympian Chris Klug and Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts. Kowalczyk, who was nominated for the award by Life Connection of Ohio, has been touched personally by organ donation. Kowalczyk s close friend, Trey Schwab, passed away in 2016 after living 12 years following a double lung transplant. He has been an advocate for organ donation for over a decade and has worked closely with Life Connection of Ohio since 2013.
