Smiles Hi! Newsletter Fall/Winter 2016 As the heat and humidity of summer wind down, we at Raleigh Orthodontics are looking forward to the cool and crisp days of fall ahead. We hope you all had a wonderful summer filled with memories to last a lifetime! We had some great times both on vacations and in our office. With this Fall/Winter 2016 edition of the Raleigh Orthodontics Smiles Hi! Newsletter we thank you for being the best patients and families around! We wouldn t have our continued success without all of you! Dr Bert and the Raleigh Ortho Team Did You Enter the Raleigh Ortho Car Magnet Contest?!?! The Raleigh Orthodontics Car Magnet Contest officially came to a close on September 30! Twelve finalists out of the hundreds of entries were randomly chosen and a winner was picked in early October! We would like to give a HUGE Thank You to all that participated in this year-long contest with a grand prize Weekend Getaway to Great Wolf Lodge! Stay tuned to our website and Social Media outlets for our winner announcement coming soon! Congratulations to all of our finalists!

Raleigh Ortho Celebrates Red Nose Day! Red Nose Day is a campaign dedicated to raising money for children living in poverty by simply having fun and making people laugh! People across the country came together on May 26 th to have fun and raise funds and awareness and we at Raleigh Orthodontics had a blast joining in on the fun! It s the newest craze taking over the app world..pokémon Go. This new game is popular with both kids and adults, but before you allow your kids in on the craze here are some helpful tips to keep them safe. Make sure you set some guidelines for your kids when they are playing the game. The game requires you to find Pokémon in common areas called gyms and Pokéstops, so make sure that your children know to always have someone older with them (either an adult or a teenager), set boundaries as to where they are allowed to go and teach them the importance of stranger-danger. Also be aware of Lures, an item that can be bought and earned in the game. Lures do just that, lure Pokémon to a Pokéstop, which is not only visible to the person playing Pokémon Go, but anyone else in the area playing (again, stranger danger!). Just a tip for parents: If your child is going to be out (with an adult, teenager or with a group of friends), use a location tracking app in case of emergencies.

Raleigh Ortho Goes Hawaiian for August! Throughout the month of August, Dr Bert and Raleigh Orthodontics decided to GO HAWAIIAN! We had awesome Luau parties at all 3 of our locations, complete with classic Hawaiian shirts, Leis, Ice Cream and a Hula Hoop contest!! Patients that were able to Hula Hoop for 5 mins were given the opportunity to spin the Raleigh Ortho Prize Wheel for a chance to win a colorful Hawaiian hat or an AWESOME Fuji Instax Camera Prize pack! Congrats to all of our winners! Aloha! Your Smile is Your Best Fashion Accessory On Sept. 7 the AAO hosted Your Smile is Your Best Fashion Accessory in New York City. This event was designed to align healthy, beautiful smiles with the buzz surrounding New York s Fashion Week. The AAO is collaborated with InStyle Magazine and fashion conscious readers from across the country learned about the life-long benefits of a healthy, beautiful smile. Remember that Your Smile is Your Best Fashion Accessory! October is National Orthodontic Health Month!! Did you know that October is National Orthodontic Health Month?! Here are some tips to keep your braces safe and your smile bright: Avoid sticky, chewy, crunchy or hard candy (caramel, gummies, licorice, taffy, gum, popcorn, just to name a few); Try tasty alternatives like chocolate, peanut butter cups, or other melt-in-your-mouth varieties; Enjoy sweets in moderation! Candy Buy-Back!! We at Raleigh Orthodontics have decided that to celebrate National Orthodontic Health Month this year we are going to reward our young patients for their trick-ortreating efforts with a Candy Buy Back! We will be accepting donations at any of our 3 locations the week of October 31 st (Louisburg 11/2, Raleigh 11/3, Creedmoor 11/4) and for each pound of candy you surrender you will receive $1.00 (limit 5lbs of candy per person)! We will then take the donated candy and give half to military serving overseas and the other half to local food banks! Also, with every dollar you earn we ll match it with a donation to our local food banks! Everybody wins!

Internet Safety Tip: Never Sign up for FREE offers! Junk mail and telemarketing calls obtain too much of your personal information! Did you know that 6% of identity theft cases are committed by another family member! Some signs that you have been a victim of Identity Theft: Are there accounts in your name you did not open? Is there inaccurate information on your credit report? (wrong spellings, names, initials, employers, ssn?) Are you missing a bill that you normally receive? (someone could have stolen your mail!) Have you received credit cards that you did not apply for? Have you been denied credit for no apparent reason? Are you receiving calls or letters from creditors about bills or services you did not purchase? Introducing the Newest Raleigh Orthodontics Team Members! Welcome back Leigh and Welcome Celia! Hi! I m Leigh! With over 14 years of experience as an Orthodontic Assistant, I love working with Dr. Bert and our team here at Raleigh Orthodontics. There is no career more rewarding than Orthodontics! My favorite thing is meeting so many new faces and helping to create beautiful smiles. As a very blessed wife, mom and stepmom, as well as a cancer survivor, my passion is bringing awareness and educating about sun safety and taking care of your largest organ- your skin! I also enjoy creating scrapbooks, photographing my children and quilting. Thank you for allowing me to serve you in your Orthodontic care! Welcome back to the Raleigh Orthodontics Team Leigh! Hi! I m Celia! Fall Fantastic Braces-Friendly Recipe Cornbread Pumpkin Cornbread with Cinnamon Honey Butter Directions 1 cup (140g) all-purpose flour 1 cup (170g) cornmeal 1 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp ground ginger 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg 1/4 tsp ground cloves 1/2 cup (110g) packed light-brown sugar 1/4 cup (2 oz) unsalted butter, melted 1 cup (244g) canned pumpkin puree 1/2 cup (122g) sour cream 2 large eggs Whipped Cinnamon Honey Butter 1/2 cup (4 oz) salted butter 1/3 cup (105g) honey 1/4 cup (30g) powdered sugar 1 tsp ground cinnamon For the cornbread: Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a mixing bowl whisk together flour, cornmeal, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and cloves for 20 seconds. Make a well in center of flour mixture then set aside. In a separate mixing bowl, add brown sugar and break up sugar with fingertips until no clumps remain. Add in melted butter and pumpkin and whisk to combine. Mix in sour cream and eggs until well blended. Pour mixture into well in flour mixture then fold with a rubber spatula just until combined and no streaks of flour remain. Spray an 8 by 8 inch baking dish with non-stick cooking spray and pour batter into pan. Spread batter into an even layer, bake in preheated oven until toothpick inserted into center comes out free of batter, about 25-30 minutes. Cool slightly on a wire rack then cut into squares. Serve with Cinnamon Honey Butter. For the cinnamon honey butter: In a mixing bowl (or using a stand mixer) whip butter with an electric hand mixer until smooth. Add in honey, powdered sugar and cinnamon and mix on low speed until combined, then increase to high speed and whip until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes. Recipe source: Cooking Classy
