Page 1 THE BLIZZARD Volume 12, Issue 2 Newington Ski Club s Newsletter Web site: www.newingtonskiclub.org The President Says... READY OR NOT, AWAY WE GO! So how is your ski season going? If you ve been joining us for Monday Night Racing, bus trips and Awareness Days, I d say pretty fantastic. And we still have February, March, and April (how about May, too!) to carve our turns. Congrats to all the Monday Night Racers who have made your Newington Ski Club vie for the number one club of the entire Connecticut Ski Council. We re still racing Mondays at Mount Southington through and including February 20, so come out and join the party if you have not made it out yet. No experience is necessary, and you will get a $15 rebate back from the $30 you pay for each Monday Night you race. That means you get a lift ticket, racing fees, and pizza afterward for a net of only $15! ON-SNOW REVISED WAIVERS JUST RELEASED New waivers were just released, please be sure to check with George Lape to insure you have the correct waiver in to participate in On-Snow activities. Just as important as the skiing is your Club s charitable fundraising, and Thursday, February 16 is our annual Soup, Stew and Chili Night. Come bring your own concoctions or just sample all the others. Suggested donation is $10 and all the proceeds go directly to Skiers Unlimited, a great adaptive ski program which gets physically and mentally challenged kids on the slopes. In addition to the great cuisine, you will feel good knowing more about Skiers Unlimited. And to satisfy our Vermont cravings, we have Club Day and On Snow Winter carnival upcoming. So get ready for February, your Ski Club awaits you! Robert A. Rusty Cushman NSC President BUS TRIP SCHEDULE 2/18/2012 NSC CLUB DAY Sat. Magic Mountain Cost to be announced. 3/24/12 Sat. Okemo - CSC day. $37.00 plus $20.00 for bus. Next NSC Meeting Dates: February 16, 2012 Soup, Stew and Chili Night February 23, 2012 March 1, 2012

Page 2 Golf League Goodwin Golf Course is looking for our signed contract and two week deposit by February 19thth. Make your $35.00 check payable to Carol Vojtila and mail it to her at: Carol Vojtila P.O. Box 157 Plainville CT 06062-0157 If there are any openings in the golf league they will go to NSC members first. Monday Night Racing NSC is in 2 nd place Graphic compliments of Paul Yuskales Come on out and help get NSC to first place, and a three-peat of our 1 st place finishes of the past two years. Membership I was hoping to tell you I have the New Roster in hand, but it does always take a while to move the piles of raw data into to the useful format of our published roster. We are real close though, I am proofing the printers copy, so I will have copies to hand out at the next club meeting. So in the mean time I will entertain you with so statistics on this season s membership. There are 687 members, we may add a few more, but the way this winter is looking I don t think we will top 700 and will certainly not equal last year s membership. There are 480 adult members and 208 children, the median adult is 49 years old and the median child is 12 years old, which are also the average ages of both which produced almost perfect bell shape curves. The most children are age eleven and the most adults is a tie between the ages of 48 and 52. Fifty percent of the Club s membership is between 40 and 57 years old and 55% is male and 45% is female. Membership will remain open into March, so for those that need snow in their back yard and find their way to our website at newingtonskiclub.org, it is not too late to renew or join. Our membership page will take you to the registration at active.com. Remember you do not need to join active.com to join the Newington Ski Club! I will also continue to have paper applications at the Ski Club meeting. Once you have joined, you will be provided with the Current Year s CSC Sticker to affix to your card. New members will receive a permanent membership card with the 2011/12 Connecticut Ski Council sticker. Finally, please provide your personal email address at signup, so we do not inundate our Club volunteers with automated out of office replies. George Lape Membership Chairperson $30 includes lift ticket and racing. This includes the pizza. NSC reimburses $15 per night of racing. Registration is 5:45 pm to 7:15 pm above the cafeteria in the lodge to the right as you walk up to the mountain s entrance. Races begin at 7:30 pm. Call Mt. Page 5 On Snow Winter Carnival March 2 4, 2012 The Connecticut Ski Council s big ski party is going to be moving to Killington this season. This is the first time that the On-Snow Weekend will have ever taken place at two ski areas. The Ski Racing is going to be held at Pico and other events will be held at Killington. We had a good time last year; we had such great turn out for the Newington Ski Club that we won the competition between the ski clubs. In fact we performed so well on the race courses that we earned the responsible to run the racing events once again. But fear not as we can shoot for our third win in a row without being burdened with this task as you can only be required to do it twice consecutively. We trust that everyone will support the effort to make sure the race events come off without a hitch; to maintain the Newington Ski Club s good reputation. Again, Ron Kapraszewski has taken on this responsibility and will be looking for volunteers to work the events and prep the bibs and race rosters. So get set for Friday March 2nd as the first event is the State Downhill Race. If you are serious about this event and your overall standing in the State Race Series you will need to book lodging for Thursday night as the event is run in registration order. The registration starts at 7:30am, day of. As for the rest of us it is an excuse to take the day off and go skiing at a discounted price. Plus you will already be in town Friday evening as the Newington Ski Club always heads out as a group for dining. We are headed to the Back Behind Restaurant & Saloon in West Bridgewater at the junction of 4 and 100; contact John Hunter to add your name to the reservation. The event schedule for the weekend is setup pretty much like last year. On Saturday March 3rd there will be race categories for everyone. There are the Junior A & B races, the Women s and Team Races for the elite competitor; plus the Club Race for the rest of us; and there is the State Snow Board Race. The races are all going to be on B Slope at Pico Mountain, which has its own Chair Lift which goes up a nasty out cropping of rock, but don t be intimidated as the B Slope is a great race hill suitable for both novices and experts. Even if you don t want to race you should come on out and socialize and cheer on the Club s Racers and Ron will be looking for your help. For some reason children are always in short supply for our roster in the Junior Races. Please talk to your little kids and teenagers and see it you can drum up some interest. We can get points just for participation and don t need them to be competitive. Also Saturday afternoon there will be a volleyball tournament between the clubs of the CSC. Join in the fun of playing volleyball in the snow with your ski boots on. The tournament is next to the Pico Mountain Base Lodge. A dinner is being held in the Grand Ballroom of the Killington Grand Hotel on Saturday night. This dinner is by reservation only so you will need to purchase tickets ahead of time. The price is $25 and the meal includes assorted rolls, breadsticks, soup and a choice of chicken or fish for the entrée and dessert, tea and coffee. Select your entrée when you order your tickets, or selection is Pan Seared Misty Knoll Chicken Breast filled with roasted pepper, Vermont Chevre, & basil orzo with Alfredo sauce or Lemon-Thyme Chatham Cod with roasted shallot butter, cracker crumbs and steamed dill potatoes. There is also a vegetarian option, but no kids menu. The sales have to be turned in at the February CSC Meeting so the last chance to order your tickets is at Monday Night Racing in the 13 th. If you miss out or have other diner plans you can still come by after 8:00pm for the Après Ski Party which includes the children s race awards, a DJ, dancing and raffle prizes. Joe Machowski has the Dinner order sheet, or you contact me at gflape@aol.com. Sunday March 4th there will be the State Cross-Country Race and a group of recreational events plus plenty of time for free skiing. The Cross-Country Ski Race will be held at Mountain Meadows which is below the bottom of the Killington Access Road. The other Sunday morning events are all family oriented. There is the Fun Race, which will be some silliness in the snow and the Ski Rally, which is a trivia/scavenger hunt. And then, what would the week end be without the big Tug-of-War in the middle of the day. Killington has arranged discount lodging at the Killington Grand Hotel and other Killington/Pico managed properties. Go to: www.killington.com/csc, follow the link to lodging for pricing and book now. Or you can contact the Killington Resort Group Sales Department at 800-432-0100 and tell them you are with the Connecticut Ski Council. Also you can communicate with them via email at groupsales@killington.com. The following local lodges and inns are also offering special pricing for CSC members, and if you book Friday and Saturday night stay you get Thursday or Sunday night free during On-Snow weekend: The Greenbrier Inn (5 miles from Killington Ski Lifts) The Vermont Inn (10 min. from Killington, 5 min. from Pico) 2057 Route 4 78 Cream Hill Road., Mendon Tel: 802-775-1575 Email: info@greenbriervt.com Tel: 802-236-3082 Email: thevermontinn@gmail.com www.greenbriervt.com www.vermontinn.com The Summit Lodge (Located on the Killington Access Road) 200 Summit Road Tel: 800-635-6343 Email: summit@vermontel.net www.summitlodgevt.com At the Greenbrier, which one of our members already checked on and recommends; it s $330 for Thursday through Saturday. A saving of $35 to $45 a night for each of the three days! My apologies for having the Lift Ticket Pricing wrong in last month s newsletter. The correct prices are; One day price is $59 Adult, $54 Young Adult and Seniors, and $45 Junior. Two day price is $114 Adult, $104 Young Adult and Seniors, and $88 Junior. Three day price is $160 Adult, $143 Young Adult and Seniors, and $118 Junior. This is special ticket pricing for the weekend and BULK TICKETS CANNOT BE USED FOR THIS EVENT. Not a real bargain, but it is a huge mountain and if you ski hard you can get your money s worth. I will be at Monday Night Racing with the event waivers looking to sign you up to participate. So plan your reservations. George Lape On-Snow Coordinator

Page 8 Words About Skiing Hi, my name is Danny, I started skiing when I was 4 and have been snowboarding for the last 3 years. Some of my favorite mountains are Magic Mountain, Okemo, and now Sugarbush! I went to Sugarbush for the Connecticut Ski Council Awareness Day, and our friend Rusty showed us all around. I went with my mom, dad, my sister and Rusty. I loved going down the blue & black trails. My favorite trail to go down was The Waterfall- because it was a blast! I really liked Sugarbush! It was my first time there. After skiing I had a fun time having a snowball fight with Jake and some other kids. I hope we can go back soon. -Danny Alissi, age 9 CT Senior Olympics 2012 CT Ski Council Senior Winter Games will happen in 2012. Date: Tuesday, February 28, 2012 Rain Date: Wednesday, February 29, 2012 Registration will be by mail or online at Ski Sundown. 3 events: Downhill Giant Slalom Snowshoe race This year we will not have a cross-country race. A meal will be available for a nominal cost, but you must reserve in advance. More detail will follow on CSC website at skiclub.com, but please save the date! Please pass this information on to anyone who is 50 or older. Note: as long as you turn 50 before December 31 you are eligible! NSC RACE VESTS I had a lot of fun at Sugarbush it was my first time there. My favorite trail was Sleeper, I liked it a lot because of all the jumps in between the trees. I would definitely want to go back there sometime! I told my dad to get more bulk tickets from the Newington Ski Club! I also liked the trail Organgrinder. I thought it was very fun. Rusty was kind enough to show us around the mountain all day. He is a very good skier and I had a lot of fun skiing with him all day as well as my dad and my brother and my mom. We did so many runs. Lisa Day is getting an order together for our club fleece race vests. Vest and embroidery cost is $74.00 ($54 for vest and $20 for embroidery).
