The WCRC has a total of 12 teams going to Adult USTA playoffs this season. For the benefi t of you tennis fans out there I have listed the playoff dates and locations found on page 5. Please note that Shari Gonzalez 2006 WCRC President some results were not in early enough for this newsletter and some of these will probably have been played by the time this newsletter reaches your mailbox. I ll also be sending out a club wide email with playoff information as well. Come out and cheer if you can. Highlighted matches include Walnut Creek vs. Walnut Creek. In Senior USTA playoff results, Mary Waltz s Women s 3.0 team lost in a tightly contested match to eventually Norcal champions Mission Hills, while Ron Huxley s Men s 3.0 team beat the eventual champions Carlmont HS, but was slightly edged out in the numbers column. Great effort to both teams! In facilities news I m happy to report that both the water fountain at Heather Farm Park and the net posts at Larkey Park have been fi xed. We all know that court maintenance is an ongoing effort and I know that I speak for the club in thanking the city of Walnut Creek, Jim Farber and Gabe Goldstein in helping to facilitate getting these issues resolved. Also, some of you may have noticed that WCRC membership and singles league applications were slightly delayed last month in getting processed. Pege Amann was able to track down the issue which was due to a problem at the Walnut Creek continued on page 3...

President's Report continued from page 2 post offi ce with our PO Box and the mail seems to be coming in regularly now thanks to Pege for her quick attention to this and our apologies to anyone inconvenienced by the delay. In one fi nal note unrelated to the club I have to express my extreme regret that the sport of tennis is losing a great humanitarian, player and one of my personal favorites. I m referring of course to the announcement that Andre Agassi made at Wimbledon that he will be retiring after the US Open this year. Back in 2000 I made the trip to New York for the US Open where I vowed that I would see Agassi play in person as I thought it might be my last chance to see him (little did I know!). Unfortunately, the draw did not cooperate with my plans as he lost in the 2 nd round to Arnaud Clement amid distractions with both his mother and sister being diagnosed with cancer. This year, I m trekking to the US Open again and you can bet that I won t miss my last chance to see Agassi play as I will be there for the early rounds, although I have a feeling he will make it past the 2 nd round this year! I personally cannot wait to see Agassi in his last US Open and am sure that regardless of the outcome I will not be forgetting this tennis memory anytime soon. See you on the courts. Shari
