Letter from the President The Dockery Era Dear Friends of Union University Athletics: Thank you so much for your support of Union University athletics. A commitment to excellence is one of our four core values across the University best demonstrated in our numerous quality academic programs at the graduate and undergraduate levels. For eleven straight years Union has been listed as a Top Tier University in the South by U. S. News and World Report. One of the fastest growing private institutions in the entire South, Union University continues to make strides in all aspects of our work and athletics is no exception. For four straight years Union has been the recipient of the TranSouth All-Sports Trophy. This recognition speaks well of all of our coaches and athletes. Dockery was elected as the fi fteenth president of Union University in December 1995, he brought with him a compelling vision to build on a great tradition while taking Union to the next level of regional and national prominence in Christian higher education. The progress that has been made during this time has been remarkable: annual non-duplicating headcount increased from 2200 (in 1996) to more than 4000 (in 2007) with annual fall enrollment increasing from 1975 to 3300; signifi cantly increased giving to Union, including twelve of the largest commitments in Union history; instituted three fi ve-year strategic plans including the current Union 2010: A Vision for Excellence ; completed construction of two residence halls, the Miller Tower, Jennings Hall, Hammons Hall, Fesmire Fieldhouse and athletic fi elds, and the magnifi cent $20 million White Hall for Science and Healthcare. A $110 million comprehensive Building a Future campaign (now at $95 million) was launched; renewed commitment to scholarship and research among Union faculty as a part of the establishment of the Center for Faculty Development; added new undergraduate majors in political science, physics, theology, digital media studies, church history, ethics, sports management, sports medicine, engineering; and graduate programs in education (M.Ed., Ed.S., and Ed.D.), nursing (MSN with tracks in education, administration, and nurse anesthesia), intercultural studies (MAIS); and a graduate program in Christian Studies (MCS). SACS Level V accreditation was achieved and accreditation was reaffi rmed in 2007 at the ten year review; programs were added in undergraduate research. Student Life and Campus Ministry programs were expanded including: LIFE group programs, student leadership development, student retention programs, student mission involvement, and giftedness assessment program for freshman students. An extension campus was established in Germantown, TN, which now has almost 900 students. This era has seen the establishment of the Carl F.H. Henry Center for Christian Leadership; the Charles Colson Chair for Faith and Culture; the Hammons Chair of Pre-Medical Studies and the Hammons Center for Science and Faith; the Ryan Center for Biblical Studies, the Stephen Olford Chair of Preaching; the Center for Educational Practice, the Center for Religion and Politics, the Center for Excellence in Healthcare Practice, and the Center for Media, Faith and Culture. The highly successful annual Scholarship Banquet (1997-2007) was launched, along with Union Forums. Union has achieved top tier recognition in U.S. News and World Report for ten years in a row and other important listings. A new Mission Statement, Identity Statement, Core Values, and Statement of Faith have been adopted to guide the University during this time. Union has attracted national attention with its approach to a simulation model for healthcare, as well as major conferences regarding Baptist Identity, Christian Higher Education, and other key topics. Dr. David Blackstock Athletic Director Athletic Director Phone: 731-661-5277 Email: dblackst@uu.edu David Blackstock is beginning his 34th season as athletic director at Union University, In the spring of 2006, Dr. Blackstock returned to the coaching ranks as he took over the softball head coaching duties. After two successfull seasons as softball head coach, Blackstock places his attention back on full-time athletic director duties. Dr. David Blackstock will be leading an athletic department that is currently made up of 10 varsity sports (women: soccer, cross country, volleyball, basketball, softball; men: soccer, cross country, basketball, baseball, golf) and two junior varsity sports (men s and women s soccer). Blackstock spent 18 seasons at the helm of the women s basketball program at Union, where he compiled a 509-89 overall record, earning his 500th career victory during the 1998-99 season. Numerous accomplishments have been a part of his basketball coaching career, including the 1998 NAIA Women s Basketball National Championship. In addition to the national title, Blackstock was named NAIA Coach of the Year and was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1999. Blackstock took over the baseball program in 1975 where he, along with co-head coach Dr. Linn Stranak, guided the team to a third place fi nish in the NAIA World Series in 1983, the only season Union has participated in the event. It was at that same time that Blackstock turned his attention to the women s basketball program. During the Lady Bulldog basketball campaign, Blackstock went to the NAIA District 24 fi nals 11 times, capturing fi ve district crowns, the 1998 national championship, and 12 conference championships. He guided the team to 10 national tournament berths in his fi nal 12 seasons, participating three times in the title game. In the two seasons he coached the Union Softball team, Blackstock accumulated a record of 77-36 with one region tournament appearance. Blackstock began his association with Union University as a baseball player in 1960 where he played for the Bulldogs until 1964. After a bachlor s degree from Union in 1964, Blackstock Women s Basketball Baseball Softball earned a Master of Education degre from Memphis State University in 1967. Mark Campbell Mark Campbell is now in his ninth season as the head coach of the Lady Bulldogs. Campbell is coming off his third straight trip to the NAIA Fab Four, including two NAIA National Titles in 2005 and 2006. Campbell also led his 2006-07 team to the TranSouth regular season and tournament championships. This marked the ninth time Union has captured the TranSouth regular season title and the eight TranSouth Tournament title in the 11-year history of the league. Campbell has 256 wins to just 42 losses (.859). He is currently in second place on the all-time Union coaching wins list (current list: Blackstock-509, Campbell-256, Birmingham- 198). Campbell s.859 winning percentage ranks No. 1 among active NAIA women s basketball coaches with fi ve or more years of coaching. In his career as Union s head coach, Campbell s teams have won, two NAIA National Title (2005, 2006), six conference regular season titles, and fi ve conference tournament titles. In the 2002-03 season, he led Union to their best regular season in school history with 30 wins before the post season tournaments. He has reached the 35-win plateau twice in his career, which ties the school record for wins in a season. Campbell continues to the winning tradition of the Union program which has accumulated the most wins of any women s basketball program (all levels NCAA and NAIA) over the last 15 years (Union 482, Tennessee 477, UCONN 477, Duke 396). Only UCONN s 327 wins over the past fi ve years is better than Union 322 wins during that span. Campbell spent fi ve seasons as a player for the Lipscomb Bison basketball team and graduated from Lipscomb University in 1994 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and from Union University in 1996 with a Master of Education. Campbell currently ranks 12th in all-time scoring at Lipscomb with 1,509 prints. The 724 assists he accumulated during his career places him in the top fi ve at David Lipscomb for career assists. Campbell helped guide the Bisons to fi ve national tournament appearances, a 129-19 four-year record, and a national record of 41 wins in a season. After college, Campbell joined Union s men s basketball coaching staff as the graduate assistant in 1994 and then became the full time assistant coach in 1996. He worked under the guidance of fellow Lipscomb graduate and current Union men s head coach Ralph Turner for fi ve seasons until being named the new women s basketball coach in 1999. Over the past seven seasons as Union s head coach, Campbell has been named as the TranSouth Coach of the Year three times (2001, 2002, 2007), NAIA Coach of the Year twice (2005, 2006), and NAIA WBCA Coach of the Year once (2004). Campbell serves nationally on the NAIA All-American Committee and is the president for the NAIA. He is also is the national rater for the TranSouth Conference. During his time as a head coach for the Union University Lady Bulldogs, he has proven to be much more that a great basketball coach. I believe my responsiblity to each of my players is to have a vision for who they can be in every area of life, and communicate it to them in a way that challanges them to pursue it. Mark Campbell is married to the former Molly Graves of Jackson. Stephanie Clark Clark enters her second season as assistant coach for the Union Lady Bulldogs. She joined the coaching staff following a very successful two-year playing career for the Lady Bulldogs from 2004-2005. Clark, from Artesia, New Mexico, is a 2005 graduate of Union University with a Bachelor s of Science Degree in Public Relations/Advertising. She earned her Master s of Arts and Education Degree from Union in Auguat of 2007. Clark played at Union for the second half of the 2004 season followed by a full season in 2005. She helped lead Union to the 2005 NAIA National Title, the fi rst of two in a row for Union. In her 66 career games with Union, Clark scored 1,383 points (20.1) and pulled down 765 rebounds (11.6) to average a double-double for her career. Honors quickly fi lled Clark s resume as she was named the NAIA National Player of the Year, along with being named the NAIA National Tournament MVP following the 2005 season. During her two years at Union, Clark was named a fi rst team All-American, TranSouth Player of the Year, fi rst team All-Conference, and to the NAIA National Tournament All-Tournament team in each season. As a junior, Clark was also named the TranSouth Conference Newcomer of the Year. In addition to her numerous honors, Clark also made her mark in the Union record book. She holds several records including points in a season (835), rebounds in a season (483), rebounds in a game (24), double-doubles in a season (29), doubledoubles in a career (44), free throws made in a season (209), and games played in a season (40). Clark, a 2001 graduate of Artesia High School (New Mexico), is the daughter of John and Jackie Mills of Charlotte, North Carolina. Jennifer Henson Jennifer Henson is in her second season as a graduate assistant coach for the Union University Lady Bulldogs. Henson remains a part Union basketball program after spending fi ve seasons, including a redshirt season, as a player for head coach Mark Campbell. Henson is a 2006 graduate of Union University with a degree in Physical Education, Wellness, and Sport. She is currently working towards a Master of Arts and Education Degree here at Union. Henson was a four-year starter for the Union Lady Bulldogs, including her key roles in helping Union win the past two NAIA National Titles. Her value to the team was proven over her fi nal two seasons when Union lost a combined 11 games, with six of those losses coming when Henson was not in the starting lineup due to injury. Over her four years, Union posted a combined record of 132-19 (.874) As a junior and senior, Henson was named to the TranSouth All-Conference team. Henson was just 18 points shy of 1,000 for her career (982). She made 228-of-633 (.360) three pointers and 130-of-165 (.788) free throws. She played in 136 games over her four years at Union. Henson is engaged to Chris Nelson and the two will be married on May 31, 2008. Johnson comes to Jackson from her home in Montague, California. Johnson earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Southern Oregon University in 2001 in Athletic Training. For her academic efforts, she graduated Cum Laude and was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi. In 2005, she completed her Masters degree in Arts Health from Southern Oregon. After graduating from Southern Oregon, Johnson has been working as the Assistant Athletic Trainer. In 1999, she was named the Student Athletic Trainer of the Year. Lady Bulldogs #3 Crystal Eason 5-8 Senior Guard Hometown: Scotts Hill, Tenn. Previous School: Scotts Hill HS Birthday: October 31 Coach s Comments. Crystal has become a more complete player each year and she continues to do all the little things championship teams need. She brings a great work ethic and great expectations everyday. Besides being a great shooter, Crystal has also proven that she is going to make big shots. She will be one of our leaders this year. Union Career. Eason played basketball at Scotts Hill High School where she averaged 25 points per game. While in high school, she was a threetime Miss Basketball Finalist. Eason was an All-State, All-Region, and All- West Tennessee performer in each of her four season at Scotts Hill. She set the Scotts Hill record with 45 points in a game as a sophomore. In her career, Eason scored over 2,900 points which puts her in the top 5 in Tennessee history of 5-on-5 high school basketball. Jessica has been one of the most coachable players I have had. She has matured a lot over the summer and will be ready to make an impact in January. She possesses the ability to attack the basket off the dribble at will and she continues to show great improvement. Kaitlin proved last season that she was ready for college basketball. She led our team in scoring and was our most consistent scorer on the perimeter throughout the year. Kaitlin was in the top 10 in the NAIA in three point percentage and was one of the best freshman in the country. We expect nothing but great things as she continues to improve on the defensive end of the fl oor. She is a winner and wants the ball when it matters most. Union Career. ( 06-07)...played in all 36 games as a freshman and led Union in scoring with 14.0 points per game...led the team with 98 made free throws and was second on the team with 81 made three pointers...was top-5 in the NAIA with a.450 three point percentage...was named fi rst team All-TranSouth, TranSouth All-Freshman team, and honorable mentioned All-American. Before Union. Dudley signed with Union prior to her senior season at Gibson County. In each her sophomore and junior seasons in high school, she was named All-District and All- Region, as well as, being named All-State as a sophomore. As a senior, she averaged 21 points, fi ve rebounds, three steals, and three assists. Dudley shot 38% from three point range and 72% from the charity stripe. She tallied a career high 39 points during a contest in the regular season. She averaged 17 points as a sophomore and eight points per game as a freshman. NEWCOMERS FROM RED-SHIRT SEASON #24 Laura Crittendon Lady Bulldogs 5-5 Freshman Guard Hometown: Martin, Tenn. Previous School: Martin-Westview HS Birthday: May 6 Coach s Comments. Laura is coming off medical red-shirt last season. She has been well coached and knows how to play. Laura is a great three point shooter and will understand the what s and why s of the game. Crittendon spent four years as a member of the basketball and softball teams at Westview High School. In basketball, she helped lead her team to a four-year record of 108-19. During her freshman season, Westview posted a runner-up fi nish in the state tournament, and then a quarterfi nal appearance when Crittendon was a junior. During her career, was named All-District 13AA, District 13AA All-Tournament, and Region 7AA All-Tournament. In her fi nal two season at Westview, Crittendon averaged 12.1 points and 5.1 assists per game. She made a combined 156 three pointers as a junior and senior. Her 92 three s made as a junior set a new school record. She played in the Tennessee East / West All-Star Game. She was an All-District and All-Tournament in District 13AA softball. Beatrice is also coming off a red-shirt season and has learned a lot during her fi rst full year in the USA. She has been slowed a little during the preseason due to injury, but she will continue to improve throughout the year as she gets more experience. Kayla has picked up right where she left off in high school. She will make our team better in every area because of her ability to make everyone better around her. She can shoot it, think it, and create it. Kayla has been very well coached and has the ability to play with intelligence no matter the situation. She is a winner and she is teammate! Hudson earned fi ve letters in basketball for coach Randy Frazier at Gleason High School. She helped Gleason win the 2007 Tennessee State Title and district championships in 2003, 2004, 2006, and 2007. Hudson also helped Gleason to a region runner-up fi nish and substate appearance in 2004. During her high school career, Hudson has been selected All-District four times, All-Region four times, and All-State three times. She also has three district MVP s and two Region MVP s in her collection. Hudson has added honors including the Jackson Sun Newcomer of the Year as a freshman and Jackson Sun All-West Tennessee. Hudson was named Tennessee Miss Basketball as a senior and was a Miss Basketball fi nalist as a junior. She was also named MVP of the West Tennesse All-Star Game and the played in the East/West All-Star Game.Hudson averaged 16.4 points per game as a junior and 21 points per game during her senior year, including 29 in the state championship game. She averaged 18 points per game over her last two seasons at Westview where she led her team to a two-year record of 64-8 while being ranked the No. 1 team in the state. Bellamy shot 55-percent from the fi eld and 77-percent from the fi eld during her high school career. She was named District MVP, All-District, and All-Region. The 2006-07 season for the Union University Lady Bulldogs was yet another season full of successes. The Lady Bulldogs captured their ninth TranSouth Regular Season Title and eighth TranSouth Tournament Title in the 11-year history of the conference. And after winning the last two NAIA National Championships (2005, 2006), Union again advanced to the NAIA s Fab Four, only to fall two points short in the semifi nal game. Union fi nished the year 30-6 overall and 14-3 in the TranSouth. The season started with great excitement, coming off the back-to-back national titles, however injuries struck early and often for the Lady Bulldogs. Sharp-shooting freshman, Laura Crittendon suffered a season ending injury during preseason practice. Then, in the second game of the season, Merideth Richardson, one of Union s leading scorers and arguably one of the best three-point shooters in the NAIA suffered the same fate. Then senior guard Latorya Fuller missed several game with an illness. Union played much of the season with just 7-to-8 players. However, Union still managed to maintain a high level of play as they maneuvered through one of the toughest schedules in recent history. Union opened the season with fi ve straight wins before falling to Vanguard, 71-65 in a historic match-up of then, two Co- No. 1 ranked NAIA teams. Union started league play on the road with two losses and were 0-2 in conference play for the fi rst time in history. His Lady Bulldog squad posted Union Lady Bulldogs 1457 1587 3044 & denotes a national tournament game. 14-straight wins in league play to clinch their ninth regular season title in the 11-year history of the TranSouth Conference. Union then rolled through the conference tournament with three straight wins to capture the tournament crown. Union won 21 of their last 23 games of the season, including post-season play. The only blemishes during that stretch were two last second shots, including one that ended their season. Of Union s six losses on the year, all were teams that were ranked and all six advanced to the NAIA National Tournament. Three of the losses were on last second shots. Looking back, it was a team that proved to be very well balanced. During the winning streak down the stretch, all but one Lady Bulldog led the team in scoring during a game. At one point, seven players were averaging double fi gures on the season. The end of the season showed four players averaging double fi gures including freshman Kaitlin Dudley leading the way with 14.0 points per game. Eight of the team s nine players fi nished the season averaging nine points or higher. Post season honors fl ooded the Lady Bulldogs. Union head Coach Mark Campbell was named the TranSouth Conference Coach of the Year. Josephine Owino, Natanya Smith, and Kaitlin Dudley were each named fi rst team All-TranSouth. Dudley was also named to the TranSouth All-Freshman team. Crystal Eason was named a TranSouth Scholar Athlete. Owino and Smith were named second team All-American performers, while Dudley was named to the honorable mentioned All-American team. Owino was named a second team All-NAIA National Tournament team player. Union also had several players among the top in NAIA stat categories. Eason ranked third in assist/turnover ratio (2.191), Ownio ranked fourth in fi eld goal percentage (.634), Sissoko ranked No. 4 in offensive rebounds per game (3.8), Dudley ranked No. 5 in three point percentage (.450), Jessica Graves ranked No. 7 in three point percentage (.433), and Smith was No. 9 in fi eld goal percentage (.580). Season Outlook The 2007-08 season for the Union University Lady Bulldog basketball team once again begins with high expectations. Union is returning the leading scorer from last season, and also the top three-point-shooter from the 2005 and 2006 teams that won national titles. The Lady Bulldogs of Union are preparing in hopes of winning a third NAIA National Championship in the past four years. The team also eyes their second straight conference championship and 10 th TranSouth Title in the 12-year history of the conference. Union returns four of the top fi ve leading scorers from last year s team, plus Merideth Richardson Jacobs (leading three-point shooter from 2005 and 2006 national title teams) who is coming off a medical redshirt season. Kaitlin Dudley led Union in scoring last season as a freshman (14.0), while Owino was second in the nation with 64-percent fi eld goal shooting. Richardson Jacobs, Owino, and Dudley have each been NAIA All-Americans during their careers. The six returning players will lead the largest freshman class that Head Coach Mark Campbell has had in his nine years at Union. Six freshmen will come in and be required to contribute early to the success of Union Lady Bulldog basketball. Crystal Eason (left) is the lone senior on this team for Union. She has proven to be one of the best shooters in the NAIA. Eason made a teamhigh 85 three pointers last season for 40-percent. The junior class returns Josephine Owino (right), Merideth Richardson Jacobs, and Jessica Graves. Owino and Graves averaged 12.3 and 9.8 points per game respectively last season for Union. Richardson Jacobs led Union in 2006 with 89 made three pointers and also led the team with 117 made threes in 2005. Two Lady Bulldogs return as sophomores including NAIA All-American and leading scorer Kaitlin Dudley (below). Her 14.0 points per game as a freshman proved she could score from any position on the fl oor. Dudley led the team in fi eld goals made, second on the team with 81 three pointers made, and led the team with 98 free throws made. Jackson native Lindsay Flynn also returns from a freshman season in which she played in 25 of the team s 36 games to gain valuable experience. Coach Campbell s largest freshman class is made up of six players. Laura Crittendon was at Union last year, but suffered a season ending injury in preseason practice. Newcomers to the program include guards Ella Joines and Kayla Hudson. Latoya Bellamy and Zeinab Chan will replenish the forward position, while Beatrice Awino comes to Union as a center. These six freshmen boast impressive credentials from their high school days: Hudson (Miss Basketball), Bellamy (two-time Miss Basketball runner-up), Joines (England s junior national team), Crittendon (school record for made 3 s, All-District), Chan (MVP, 6-foot-4), and Awino (6-foot-6). Coach Campbell states, We are not as athletic as Union teams in the past, but I believe this is one of the best shooting teams we ve ever had. Campbell goes on to say, This team has some of the best people I have ever coached. A group of very talented returning players with a group of talented newcomers will make for a fun season of Lady Bulldog basketball in 2007-08. TEAM EMPHASIS - PHILADELPHIA Equality Unity Closeness Servanthood (II Peter 1:3-8) As we begin this journey together in 2007/08 let s let this word defi ne who we are and who we are to be in March. Philadelphia, the city, is known as the city of brotherly love. Philadelphia the word used in II Peter is used to mean something much deeper than mere kindness in the Christian life. Peter used Philadelphia because it is to be personal. Brotherly kindness is me caring for you and you for me, up close, face to face, hands on. I am willing to bear with you and you with me putting up with each other, in all our oddness, cultural differences, weirdness and moodiness anything less would not be Philadelphia. Philadelphia asks, Who is my teammate? Where is my teammate? And it insists, I am my teammates keeper! Philadelphia gets involved and it comes near, it does not watch from a distance. If you are a teammate and you don t get personal and practical then what good are you to this family and this team? Philadelphia is to love what God loves! It is to fi rst love whom God loves and to love the way God does. Philadelphia was another way for saying that blood is thicker than water or family sticks together, ALWAYS. Four expressions of PHILADELPHIA 1) Equality With teammates, none has status above the other. It does not matter what role you play within the family. Do not give access or privilege to someone at the expense of someone else. No one is exalted above anyone else within the circle. You are all equals! 2) Unity Whatever makes us all unique and different could not possibly be greater than what makes us alike. Whatever divides us cannot possibly be stronger than what brings together. If Jesus is with you and Jesus is with me, then what we have in common exceeds everything we don t. 3) Closeness The imagery of TEAM implies a warmth of feeling toward one another, a desire for oneness with each other, a bond that transcends mere friendship. 4) Servanthood Romans 12, which is all about each of us serving the other for the sake of the TEAM and the Glory of God. In verse 10, Paul says Be devoted to one another in Philadelphia. Honor one anther above yourselves Simply, love serves, love honors. Love is practical devotion that seeks the good of the other. Championship History 2006 NAIA Championship Union Women Win Second Straight NAIA National Title JACKSON, Tenn. - March 21, 2006 - The Union University Lady Bulldogs claimed their second straight NAIA Women s Basketball National Championship and third in program history on Tuesday night with a 79-62 win over Lubbock Christian University (Texas). In those 10 games, Union has won eight by double fi gures and has posted a two-year tournament scoring margin of plus 15.9 points. The Lady Bulldogs were led by Owino who posted her second straight double-double of the tournament with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Natanya Smith added 16 points and 14 rebounds, and Daniels added 10 points. In a tournament where Union s three-point shooting (43 percent) was so prevalent, it was Owino and Smith s combined 40 points and 24 rebounds in the post that sealed Union s second straight NAIA crown in the title game. Union s Owino, Daniels, and Merideth Richardson were each named to the NAIA All-Tournament Team. Seven-year head coach and the NAIA s active winningest coach, Mark Campbell, was named the NAIA Coach of the Year for the second straight season. 2005 NAIA Championship Union Lady Bulldogs Win NAIA National Championship JACKSON, Tenn. - March 22, 2005 - The Union University Lady Bulldogs won the 2005 NAIA National Basketball Championship with a 67-63 win over Oklahoma City in the title game on Tuesday night at Oman Arena. For Union (35-5), this is the second NAIA Women s National Title (1998, 2005) and the fi rst for sixth year head coach Mark Campbell. Union led 30-29 at halftime and then stretched that lead to 17 points (59-42) with just over 11 minutes remaining in the game. Oklahoma City slowly crept back and pulled to within two points with 27 seconds left. Union held that two-point lead as Ena Daniels, a 64% free-throw shooter for the year, stepped to the line and made both free throws with eight second remaining. Union led by four, 67-63, and after a turnover by Oklahoma City on the inbounds play, the game was sealed for Union. 1998 NAIA Championship Union Captures First NAIA National Title JACKSON, Tenn. - March 24, 1998 - The Union University Lady Bulldogs earned their fi rst NAIA National Championship by defeating the four-time defending champions, Southern Nazarene University (Okla.) 73-70. Union led 31-29 at halftime, and held on in a very tight, back and fourth second half. Union captured the title depite being outrebounded 55-40 and committing 10 more turnovers (27-17). The Lady Bulldogs were led by Rose Agnoung with 29 points and April Pearson with 15 points. Union received numerous honors following the tournament including Agnoung being named the Tournament MVP, April Pearson taking the Hustle Award, and Coach David Blackstock earning the Coach of the Year Award.
