Letter from the President The Dockery Era Dear Friends of Union University Athletics: Thank you so much for your support of Union University athletics. A commitment to excellence is one of our four core values across the University best demonstrated in our numerous quality academic programs at the graduate and undergraduate levels. For eleven straight years Union has been listed as a Top Tier University in the South by U. S. News and World Report. One of the fastest growing private institutions in the entire South, Union University continues to make strides in all aspects of our work and athletics is no exception. For four straight years Union has been the recipient of the TranSouth All-Sports Trophy. This recognition speaks well of all of our coaches and athletes. We salute David Blackstock, Tommy Sadler, and all of those who serve Union University so faithfully in our Department of Athletics. We thank each of you for your support of the Union University athletic teams and for support of our distinctive Christcentered mission. Go Bulldogs! David S. Dockery, President When David S. Dockery was elected as the fi fteenth president of Union University in December 1995, he brought with him a compelling vision to build on a great tradition while taking Union to the next level of regional and national prominence in Christian higher education. The progress that has been made during this time has been remarkable: annual non-duplicating headcount increased from 2200 (in 1996) to more than 4000 (in 2007) with annual fall enrollment increasing from 1975 to 3300; signifi cantly increased giving to Union, including twelve of the largest commitments in Union history; instituted three fi ve-year strategic plans including the current Union 2010: A Vision for Excellence ; completed construction of two residence halls, the Miller Tower, Jennings Hall, Hammons Hall, Fesmire Fieldhouse and athletic fi elds, and the magnifi cent $20 million White Hall for Science and Healthcare. A $110 million comprehensive Building a Future campaign (now at $95 million) was launched; renewed commitment to scholarship and research among Union faculty as a part of the establishment of the Center for Faculty Development; added new undergraduate majors in political science, physics, theology, digital media studies, church history, ethics, sports management, sports medicine, engineering; and graduate programs in education (M.Ed., Ed.S., and Ed.D.), nursing (MSN with tracks in education, administration, and nurse anesthesia), intercultural studies (MAIS); and a graduate program in Christian Studies (MCS). SACS Level V accreditation was achieved and accreditation was reaffi rmed in 2007 at the ten year review; programs were added in undergraduate research. Student Life and Campus Ministry programs were expanded including: LIFE group programs, student leadership development, student retention programs, student mission involvement, and giftedness assessment program for freshman students. An extension campus was established in Germantown, TN, which now has almost 900 students. This era has seen the establishment of the Carl F.H. Henry Center for Christian Leadership; the Charles Colson Chair for Faith and Culture; the Hammons Chair of Pre-Medical Studies and the Hammons Center for Science and Faith; the Ryan Center for Biblical Studies, the Stephen Olford Chair of Preaching; the Center for Educational Practice, the Center for Religion and Politics, the Center for Excellence in Healthcare Practice, and the Center for Media, Faith and Culture. The highly successful annual Scholarship Banquet (1997-2007) was launched, along with Union Forums. Union has achieved top tier recognition in U.S. News and World Report for ten years in a row and other important listings. A new Mission Statement, Identity Statement, Core Values, and Statement of Faith have been adopted to guide the University during this time. Union has attracted national attention with its approach to a simulation model for healthcare, as well as major conferences regarding Baptist Identity, Christian Higher Education, and other key topics. Three signifi cant publications have helped defi ne the work of Christian higher education on the Union campus and around the country: The Future of Christian Higher Education, Shaping a Christina Worldview, and Renewing Minds: Serving Church and Society Through Christian Higher Education. The 2006-07 season for the Union University Lady Bulldogs was yet another season full of successes. The Lady Bulldogs captured their ninth TranSouth Regular Season Title and eighth TranSouth Tournament Title in the 11-year history of the conference. And after winning the last two NAIA National Championships (2005, 2006), Union again advanced to the NAIA s Fab Four, only to fall two points short in the semifi nal game. Union fi nished the year 30-6 overall and 14-3 in the TranSouth. The season started with great excitement, coming off the back-to-back national titles, however injuries struck early and often for the Lady Bulldogs. Sharp-shooting freshman, Laura Crittendon suffered a season ending injury during preseason practice. Then, in the second game of the season, Merideth Richardson, one of Union s leading scorers and arguably one of the best three-point shooters in the NAIA suffered the same fate. Then senior guard Latorya Fuller missed several game with an illness. Union played much of the season with just 7-to-8 players. However, Union still managed to maintain a high level of play as they maneuvered through one of the toughest schedules in recent history. Union opened the season with fi ve straight wins before falling to Vanguard, 71-65 in a historic match-up of then, two Co- No. 1 ranked NAIA teams. Over the pre-conference portion of the schedule, Union posted a 9-2 record, with eight of the 11 teams being ranked and/or NAIA National Tournament teams. 2006-07 Stats & Summary Union University Lady Bulldog Basketball 2006-07 Season Stats Record: Overall Home Away Neutral All Games (30-6) (18-2) (9-3) (3-1) Conference (15-3) (8-1) (7-2) (0-0) Non-Conference (15-3) (10-1) (2-1) (3-1) TOTAL 3-PT REBOUNDS # Player GP GS MIN AVG FG FGA PCT FG FGA PCT FT FTA PCT OFF DEF TOT AVG PF A TO BLK ST PTS AVG 3 Crystal Eason 36 35 1190 33.1 127 317.401 85 212.401 43 52.827 15 62 77 2.1 42 103 47 6 48 382 10.6 4 Jessica Graves 36 36 1161 32.2 120 266.451 55 127.433 57 73.781 18 99 117 3.3 88 161 116 2 73 352 9.8 10 Ena Daniels 16 13 445 27.8 62 164.378 4 15.267 19 30.633 34 42 76 4.8 35 53 48 4 35 147 9.2 11 Kaitlin Dudley 36 5 1008 28.0 163 348.468 81 180.450 98 125.784 35 118 153 4.3 97 100 82 2 47 505 14.0 15 LaTorya Fuller 34 30 889 26.1 114 234.487 23 68.338 51 78.654 47 63 110 3.2 58 106 89 17 60 302 8.9 21 Lindsay Flynn 25 0 236 9.4 14 35.400 3 14.214 4 11.364 17 19 36 1.4 20 29 20 2 20 35 1.4 32 Natanya Smith 36 36 927 25.7 203 350.580 0 0.000 92 166.554 107 208 315 8.8 89 30 90 36 52 498 13.8 51 Josephine Owino 36 0 578 16.1 184 290.634 0 1.000 73 123.593 96 118 214 5.9 103 6 75 59 42 441 12.3 53 DJ Sissoko 36 22 707 19.6 144 254.567 0 1.000 70 99.707 137 147 284 7.9 73 22 78 19 38 358 9.9 TEAM Rebounds 43 61 104 16 Union Lady Bulldogs 36 7199 1140 2279.500 257 633.406 507 757.670 549 937 1486 41.3 609 613 661 147 419 3044 84.6 Opponents 36 7199 785 2078.378 211 674.313 454 618.735 431 714 1145 31.8 641 418 810 87 251 2235 62.1 TEAM STATISTICS UU OPP SCORING 3044 2235 Points per game 84.6 62.1 Scoring margin 22.5 - FIELD GOALS-ATT 1140-2279 785-2078 Field goal pct.500.378 3 POINT FG-ATT 257-633 211-674 3-point FG pct.406.313 3-pt FG made per game 7.1 5.9 FREE THROWS-ATT 507-757 454-618 Free throw pct.670.735 REBOUNDS 1486 1145 Rebounds per game 41.3 31.8 Rebounding margin 9.5 - ASSISTS 613 418 Assists per game 17.0 11.6 TURNOVERS 661 810 Turnovers per game 18.4 22.5 Turnover margin -4.1 - Assist / turnover ratio 0.9 0.5 STEALS 419 251 Steals per game 11.6 7.0 BLOCKS 147 87 Blocks per game 4.1 2.4 ATTENDANCE 0 0 Home games-avg/game 20-0 12-0 Neutral site-avg/game - 4-0 Date Opponent Score W L Record Attend 11/04/06 h Saint Gregory's Univ. 86-37 W 1-0 0 11/07/06 h Houston Baptist Univ. 81-64 W 2-0 0 11/11/06 a Lee University 65-60 W 3-0 0 11/16/06 h Georgetown College 79-51 W 4-0 0 11/17/06 h Oklahoma Baptist Univ. 70-66 W 5-0 0 11/18/06 h Vanguard University 65-71 L 5-1 0 11/24/06 h Loyola University 80-67 W 6-1 0 11/25/06 h Harris-Stowe State 91-81 W 7-1 0 12/02/06 a Saint Xavier University 88-89 L 7-2 0 12/04/06 a Robert Morris College 93-65 W 8-2 0 12/08/06 h Paul Quinn College 104-29 W 9-2 0 01/04/07 * a Cumberland University 66-79 L 9-3, 0-1 0 01/06/07 * a Trevecca Nazarene Univ. 63-69 L 9-4, 0-2 0 01/11/07 * h Mid-Continent Univ. 119-33 W 10-4, 1-2 0 01/13/07 * a Bethel College TN 85-74 W 11-4, 2-2 0 01/15/07 * a Lyon College 94-42 W 12-4, 3-2 0 01/18/07 * h Blue Mountain College 90-61 W 13-4, 4-2 0 01/20/07 * h Freed-Hardeman Univ. 84-74 W 14-4, 5-2 0 01/25/07 * a Lambuth University 89-69 W 15-4, 6-2 0 01/27/07 * h Martin Methodist College 74-58 W 16-4, 7-2 0 02/01/07 * h Cumberland University 82-69 W 17-4, 8-2 0 02/03/07 * h Trevecca Nazarene Univ. 97-70 W 18-4, 9-2 0 02/08/07 * a Mid-Continent Univ. 97-32 W 19-4, 10-2 0 02/10/07 * h Lyon College 89-46 W 20-4, 11-2 0 02/12/07 * h Bethel College TN 81-65 W 21-4, 12-2 0 02/15/07 * a Blue Mountain College 94-57 W 22-4, 13-2 0 02/17/07 * a Freed-Hardeman Univ. 71-67 W 23-4, 14-2 0 02/22/07 * h Lambuth University 85-87 L 23-5, 14-3 0 02/24/07 * a Martin Methodist College 72-65 W 24-5, 15-3 0 02/28/07 ^ h Blue Mountain College 113-59 W 25-5 0 03/02/07 ^ h Lambuth University 97-74 W 26-5 0 03/05/07 ^ h Trevecca Nazarene Univ. 80-66 W 27-6 0 03/14/07 & n The Master's College 86-55 W 28-5 0 03/16/07 & n Oklahoma Christian Univ. 87-61 W 29-5 0 03/17/07 & n Houston Baptist Univ. 83-58 W 30-5 0 03/19/07 & n Lambuth University 64-66 L 30-6 0 Union then started conference play in the increasingly tough TranSouth Conference. Looking back, it was a team that proved to be very well balanced. During the winning streak down the stretch, all but one Lady Bulldog led the team in scoring during a game. At one point, seven players were averaging double fi gures on the season. The end of the season showed four players averaging double fi gures including freshman Kaitlin Dudley leading the way with 14.0 points per game. Eight of the team s nine players fi nished the season averaging nine points or higher. Post season honors fl ooded the Lady Bulldogs. Since its introduction of intercollegiate championship basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained the highest standards while administering fi rst-rate athletics programs. With its major emphasis on educational development, it was natural for the NAIA to strengthen academic eligibility requirements. All NAIA participating studentathletes must maintain a certain grade-point-average (GPA) while accumulating credit hours for a declared academic degree. Unlike other associations, NAIA student-athlete academic eligibility is monitored on a semester-by-semester basis. The NAIA includes more than 60,000 participating student-athletes. The NAIA offers 24 separate championships in 13 sports including baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, football, indoor track and fi eld, outdoor track and fi eld, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, volleyball, and wrestling. The NAIA Champions of Character program has established fi ve core values that go well beyond the playing fi eld to the daily decisions of our youth. These character values help young people - and those associated with their development - make good choices in all aspects of their life and refl ect the true spirit of competition. Respect Those associated with sport show respect by treating themselves, other persons, institutions and their sport according to the highest standards of conduct. It implies civilized and gracious behavior to players, coaches, fans and parents. Responsibility Athletes show responsibility by making academic progress toward graduation their top priority. They solve problems rather than make excuses, and are reliable team players. Students should be accountable for their actions and decisions, and coaches and administrators should maintain high standards of competence and conduct. Integrity For student competitors and their coaches, integrity means keeping commitments and conducting honest behavior. Coaches must subscribe to and practice the Coaches Code and Code of Ethics, and studentathletes must know and understand the Champions of Character Student-Athlete Pledge. Servant Leadership This core value refers to putting the group fi rst and becoming responsible for personal and group roles while performing at your best. Students demonstrating servant leadership have a primary purpose of serving others while striving to become a personal and team leader. The servant-leader provides a critical service to society and the great gift of good example. Sportsmanship The conduct of educational sports according to the highest standards is our expectation for sportsmanship. Administrators, coaches, students, fans, and parents are expected to act correctly even when other do not, and demonstrate fairness and equity in all contest and relationships. Season Outlook The 2007-08 season for the Union University Lady Bulldog basketball team once again begins with high expectations. Union is returning the leading scorer from last season, and also the top three-point-shooter from the 2005 and 2006 teams that won national titles. The Lady Bulldogs of Union are preparing in hopes of winning a third NAIA National Championship in the past four years. The team also eyes their second straight conference championship and 10 th TranSouth Title in the 12-year history of the conference. Union returns four of the top fi ve leading scorers from last year s team, plus Merideth Richardson Jacobs (leading three-point shooter from 2005 and 2006 national title teams) who is coming off a medical redshirt season. Kaitlin Dudley led Union in scoring last season as a freshman (14.0), while Owino was second in the nation with 64-percent fi eld goal shooting. Richardson Jacobs, Owino, and Dudley have each been NAIA All-Americans during their careers. The six returning players will lead the largest freshman class that Head Coach Mark Campbell has had in his nine years at Union. Six freshmen will come in and be required to contribute early to the success of Union Lady Bulldog basketball. Crystal Eason (left) is the lone senior on this team for Union. She has proven to be one of the best shooters in the NAIA. Eason made a teamhigh 85 three pointers last season for 40-percent. The junior class returns Josephine Owino (right), Merideth Richardson Jacobs, and Jessica Graves. Owino and Graves averaged 12.3 and 9.8 points per game respectively last season for Union. Richardson Jacobs led Union in 2006 with 89 made three pointers and also led the team with 117 made threes in 2005. Two Lady Bulldogs return as sophomores including NAIA All-American and leading scorer Kaitlin Dudley (below). Her 14.0 points per game as a freshman proved she could score from any position on the fl oor. Dudley led the team in fi eld goals made, second on the team with 81 three pointers made, and led the team with 98 free throws made. Jackson native Lindsay Flynn also returns from a freshman season in which she played in 25 of the team s 36 games to gain valuable experience. Coach Campbell s largest freshman class is made up of six players. Laura Crittendon was at Union last year, but suffered a season ending injury in preseason practice. Newcomers to the program include guards Ella Joines and Kayla Hudson. Latoya Bellamy and Zeinab Chan will replenish the forward position, while Beatrice Awino comes to Union as a center. These six freshmen boast impressive credentials from their high school days: Hudson (Miss Basketball), Bellamy (two-time Miss Basketball runner-up), Joines (England s junior national team), Crittendon (school record for made 3 s, All-District), Chan (MVP, 6-foot-4), and Awino (6-foot-6). Coach Campbell states, We are not as athletic as Union teams in the past, but I believe this is one of the best shooting teams we ve ever had. Campbell goes on to say, This team has some of the best people I have ever coached. A group of very talented returning players with a group of talented newcomers will make for a fun season of Lady Bulldog basketball in 2007-08. TEAM EMPHASIS - PHILADELPHIA Equality Unity Closeness Servanthood (II Peter 1:3-8) As we begin this journey together in 2007/08 let s let this word defi ne who we are and who we are to be in March. Philadelphia, the city, is known as the city of brotherly love. Philadelphia the word used in II Peter is used to mean something much deeper than mere kindness in the Christian life. Peter used Philadelphia because it is to be personal. Brotherly kindness is me caring for you and you for me, up close, face to face, hands on. I am willing to bear with you and you with me putting up with each other, in all our oddness, cultural differences, weirdness and moodiness anything less would not be Philadelphia. Philadelphia asks, Who is my teammate? Where is my teammate? And it insists, I am my teammates keeper! Philadelphia gets involved and it comes near, it does not watch from a distance. If you are a teammate and you don t get personal and practical then what good are you to this family and this team? Philadelphia is to love what God loves! It is to fi rst love whom God loves and to love the way God does. Philadelphia was another way for saying that blood is thicker than water or family sticks together, ALWAYS. Four expressions of PHILADELPHIA 1) Equality With teammates, none has status above the other. It does not matter what role you play within the family. Do not give access or privilege to someone at the expense of someone else. No one is exalted above anyone else within the circle. You are all equals! 2) Unity Whatever makes us all unique and different could not possibly be greater than what makes us alike. Whatever divides us cannot possibly be stronger than what brings together. If Jesus is with you and Jesus is with me, then what we have in common exceeds everything we don t. 3) Closeness The imagery of TEAM implies a warmth of feeling toward one another, a desire for oneness with each other, a bond that transcends mere friendship. 4) Servanthood Romans 12, which is all about each of us serving the other for the sake of the TEAM and the Glory of God. In verse 10, Paul says Be devoted to one another in Philadelphia. Honor one anther above yourselves Simply, love serves, love honors. Love is practical devotion that seeks the good of the other. If the love of Jesus is really alive in you, PHILADELPHIA will be who you are. 22 - Union University Women s Basketball Media Guide
