Redtail Canyon rules are listed below. To enroll, the 4H member must fill out the following form and must be 8 years old or in 3rd grade on January 1st, 2016. Cost: The registration fee is one hundred dollar ($100) for each member of the family. Observers are welcome for free. One horse per rider only. If you would like to only participate on Friday the cost is fifty ($50). Entry: The completed form must be signed by your club leader and include your entry fee. You entry will NOT be accepted if post marked after July 1st. Haul-In: You must be ready to ride at the time stated above. All horses must have a responsible person on the grounds in charge of them at all times; the same goes for kids. Horses are not allowed in picnic area. Turn trailer around at the end of the road and park on the right side. No cars or trucks may be parked in grass areas. Note that train runs right next to the road. Please hold your horse the first time the train passes. Please don't unload your horses until your trailer is parked. There is a round pen for your use if needed, please limit turnout to 15 minutes. Attendance: Attendance will not be taken. Think of it like you are in college, its your money and your job to show up on time and ready for class.
Ponderosa 4-H Clinic Registration Form page 2 Herdsmanship: There will be an evaluator ensuring that your horse is tied safely to the trailer, has water and food and that you have cleaned up manure from your horse in the road before hauling out. Attire: You must wear long pant or breeches, boots with a heel and a comfortable shirt are the order of the day. No bikini tops, tube tops, belly shirts and/or shorts will be worn when working with or around horses. Boots meant for riding and your helmet must be worn whenever you're around the horses. No open toed shoes in the barn area for anyone. All youth riders are required by state 4-H rules to wear an approved (ASTM and SEI) safety helmet in any horse instances; this includes on the ground and when mounted. Horses: These are the ground rules: No riding in a halter. No trading horses, unless approved by both parents, leader and trainer. No riding double. If it appears to be unsafe - don't do it. If a horse is determined by the trainers to be a hazard for any reason, the participant will be asked to leave. If a horse is injured, a new horse can be substituted upon approval of Ponderosa Leader and trainer. Finally, only participants or the event trainers are to ride the horses. Haul Out: As stated above, you must throw all manure from around your trailer into the bushes. Clean up picnic area and if you are in the final group you are responsible for cleaning the manure out of the arena before leaving the grounds each day. Everything else: Please bring your own lunch and chairs for sitting around. When on the grounds and using the restrooms please keep them clean, turn off the lights and close the door. All cars must also park on the side of the road, no vehicles on the grass. No camping for fires will be permitted at anytime while on the Redtail Canyon Farm. As well as No BBQ's. Please be respectful and kind to Ross and Maryanne Frank and their guests as they donate the arena to Ponderosa. Also No DOGS are allowed on the premise besides the Frank's. Ponderosa 4-H Clinic Registration Form page 3 The following level descriptions will help us to best understand your riding abilities and to assign you the most similar group of members. Level 1 (Recommended for first year riders) Mount and dismount a saddled horse Hold the reins correctly at a halt. Shorten / Lengthen reins at a halt and walk. Ride at a walk and jog / trot with control keeping horse on the rail. Simple change of direction at walk and jog / trot. Perform gradual transitions from walk to jog / trot, jog / trot to walk, and walk to halt. Back straight 3 steps Serpentine through cones at a walk. Level 2 All level 1 skills. Mount and dismount a saddled horse alone (no handler). Shorten / lengthen reins at a jog /trot. Simple turns and large circles at a walk and jog / trot. Drop and pickup stirrups / irons at a jog / trot (no hands). Proper seat for jog / trot (diagonals for English). Canter / lope both directions with proper lead. Two point for extended jog or starting the jumping position. Walk and jog / trot over a ground pole. Back 5 steps, stop, into a jog / trot. Transition smoothly from walk to lope / canter to walk, jog / trot to lope canter to jog / trot. Serpentine through cones at a jog / trot. Level 3 All level 1 and level 2 skills. Properly adjust stirrups / irons and girth / cinch (mounted for English). Drop and pickup strirrup / irons at a jog / trot. Collected jog / trot to extended jog / trot to collect jog / trot. Perform simple lead change at a specified spot. Ride with collection. Stop squarely and remain quiet for 5 seconds in a specified spot. Ride without stirrups / irons at all gates. Walk and jog / trot over multiple ground poles. Perform a simple serpentine pattern at a walk, jog / trot, lope / canter. Turn on haunches, turn on forehand, sidepass. Level 4 All level 1, level 2, and level 3 skills. Mount and dismount from both sides. Shoulder in, haunches in, leg yield. Flying lead change at a specified spot. Controlled hand gallop.
