2 DMSC SHORT SHOTS Upper Pistol Range has Reopened: Aer construcng a baffle system and improving the backstops, the right hand side of the UPR has reopened for shoong at distances of 25 yards or greater. See page 3 for more details Work Party: July 19 starng at 8am. Please a'end even if you can only lend a hand for a couple hours. New Range(s): Work on the new pistol range is progressing nicely. The footers for covered firing line will be dug as soon as Mother Nature decides to cooperate. A second, shorter distance, range was excavated adjacent to the new pistol range. Chuck Augenstein has dubbed this the Steel Challenge range. More details to follow. MPRL: DMSC took first place overall in both Rimfire and Centerfire events in the 2013-2014 Metropolitan Police Revolver League. Dr. Harry Pa'on has applied for a Life Membership to the club. Did you know the inventor of Kevlar, the polymer used in so body armor and res, was born in the Pi'sburgh area? Stephanie Kwolek, born in New Kensington, passed away on June 18, 2014. Proposed Changes to CMP Pistol Program: The CMP has proposed changes to its Pistol program to encourage more parcipaon. The most notable change is to allow many more pistols to be used in EIC matches such as Glock, Springfield D, Sig P220, S&W M&P, etc. Creang a new Disnguished Badge for.22 rimfire pistols was also proposed. Full details can be found at: h'p:// www.thecmp.org/compeons/forms/ ProposedCMPPistolProgramChanges.pdf DMSC Conducts Safety Reviews Board appointed Range Safety Officers (RSOs) will conduct a random series of membership checks and safety reviews. RSOs will meet with members and guests while at the firing range. Each member will be given a green safety card with important safety informaon to review, membership ID s will be checked, a green scker will be affixed to the membership card, and a copy of the range rules will be made available. It s important for all members to review safe gun handling procedures and to focus on the safety rules for each range used. The RSOs will be a wearing a disncve safety vest and hat and will only ask for a few minutes of your me. KEEP IT SAFE ALWAYS keep firearms pointed in a safe direction. ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot. ALWAYS keep firearms unloaded until ready to use. ALWAYS unload, remove the magazine, and open the action of a firearm when someone is going down range. NEVER handle firearms while someone is down range. ALWAYS wear proper eye and ear protection at the range. JR Rifle Program: The junior program will resume in September. Sign-ups have begun. See page 4 for details. CMP Leadership Change: Orest Michaels has announced his rerement as COO of the CMP. Michaels will be succeeded by Mark Johnson. July CMP Match: The July CMP match will not be open to new shooters. See page 4 for details.
3 Upper Pistol Range Changes A baffle system was installed on the right hand side of the Upper Pistol range. The purpose of the baffles is to prevent any inadvertent high shots from leaving the range. The baffles sit just ahead of the covered firing line. The picture to the right is the baffle system from the rear. DO NOT HANG TARGETS ON THE BAFFLES OR ON THE WOODEN POSTS. The picture to the le shows what the baffle system looks like from the firing line. Shots will pass between the posts and under the baffles. All shoo ng must take place from underneath the pavilion. No one is permi'ed to fire from down range. THE RULES FOR THE UPPER PISTOL RANGE HAVE CHANGED, SO PLEASE TAKE NOTE: 1. Only handguns and handgun ammuni on may be used on this range. Addi onally, equipment and ammuni on common to pistol Silhoue'e shoo ng may be used for compe on. Rifles are to be used on the pistol range only during sanc oned Matches. 2. Members will only use the club supplied target frames to be placed at 25 yds, 50 yds, 75 yds, or 100 yds. Paper targets must fit en rely within a 2. 2. target backer. 3. Firing shall be accomplished from the firing line only (under the pavilion) 4. When no fied that a member on another range is proceeding beyond the 100 yd. bunker, all firearms will be CLEARED and remain CLEARED un l that member returns and states that the range is hot. 5. Targets to be used on this range are not to be placed at a distance of less than 25 yds. 6. At this me, shoo ng off of the table/benches is not permi'ed. As it is no longer permi'ed to shoot off the table benches (see item 6 above) the Range Rules have been changed to allow sigh ng in of pistols the Bench Rest Range, however, pistols must be BENCHED (see the Range Rules for a defini on) when using this range. Another loca on for sigh ng in pistols is the Plinkers Range.
4 CMP JUNIOR RIFLE PROGRAM TO RESUME IN SEPTEMBER The Junior Rifle Program is scheduled to resume on September 9 th. This starts with a 7 week instruconal class emphasizing safety and marksmanship basics for new shooters. Addional coaching & pracce available every Tuesday night through March aer the 7 week class concludes. Focus is on juniors (suggested minimum age of 12) Adult shooters wishing to improve skills can also parcipate (class size permipng) You don t have to be a club member to take this course NRA Cerfied Instructors lead the program Charge of $10 (TOTAL) for 7 week class----includes instrucon book, ammo, target rifles, and all needed equipment Call or e-mail for addional informaon. CMP SPECIAL EVENT The CMP Program is pleased to announce a special shoong event: an M1 Garand Match and a Springfield/ Vintage Military Rifle Match on the 200 Yd. Range. This event will be held on Sunday July 13, 2014. There will be two relays each shoong the 30 round Course of Fire: 10 Rounds Slow Fire Prone, 10 Rounds Rapid Fire Prone, 10 Rounds Slow Fire OWand. Relay # 1: M1 Garand Match (9:00 A.M.) Relay #2 Springfield/Vintage Military Rifle Match (10:30 A.M.). The cost for each relay is $5 (targets only no ammo will be sold). As this is a special event, there will not be an opportunity for first me shooters to parcipate. Space on the 200 yd range is limited; registraon will be on a first-come, first-served basis.
