JOSEPH'S: Stanford (1-1) and St. Joseph's (0-1) met for the first time in their respective histories on December 14 of last season in Philadelphia, and the Hawks came away with a 69-41 win... The game turned out to be the Cardinal's largest defeat of the season, as well as its fewest points scored in a game since a 72-32 loss to Missouri on January 2, 1984... Stanford (#18 AP/#22 Coaches Poll), which is coming off an impressive 85-57 home win over South Bay rival Santa Clara on Monday night at Maples Pavilion, has a chance to even the score when the teams face off again on Friday at 7:30 p.m. on The Farm... The loss to St. Joseph's turned the table for the Cardinal, however, as it rebounded to win five straight and nine of its next 10 after starting last season 2-3... The Cardinal is currently in the midst of a season-opening stretch where it plays of its first six games on its home floor, with all five of those home games coming in succession in a 14-day span... The St. Joseph's game begins a stretch of three home games in five days, which includes match-ups with Bay Area rivals Pacific (Sunday @ 2:00 p.m.) and San Francisco (Tuesday @ 7:30 p.m.)... And home has always been a kind place for the Cardinal, which was 12-2 at Maples last season and is 285-72 (.798) all-time on its home floor... In fact, Stanford has lost two home games or less in 12 of the last 13 seasons. 498 WINS AND COUNTING FOR TARA: Tara VanDerveer - one of the most accomplished coaches in both collegiate and international women's basketball history - needs just two more victories to reach 500 for her illustrious career... The head coach of the gold-medal winning 1996 United States Olympic Team and three-time National Coach of the Year (1988, '89, '90) has rolled up a 498-143 (.777) record in 20-plus years of collegiate coaching, including a 346-92 (.790) mark on The Farm... In seven head coaching stints with the USA Basketball program, VanDerveer has compiled an 88-8 (.917) record to go along with four gold medals and one bronze. STANFORD PICKS UP FIRST WIN OF SEASON: Stanford opened its 2000-01 home schedule in impressive fashion with an easy 85-57 win over Santa Clara before 2,703 fans on Monday night at Maples Pavilion... Stanford, which had nine of its 12 players score six points or more, used an 11-0 run in the final 3:45 of the first half to put the game away... The Cardinal led 39-23 at the half, and did not let the Broncos get within 15 points in the final 20 minutes... Junior Lauren St. Clair - a Philadelphia native who will be going up against hometown team St. Joseph's on Friday night - had a team-high 13 points to go along with five rebounds... Junior Enjoli Izidor (Seattle, WA/Roosevelt HS) added 12 points in just 19 minutes off the bench, while freshman Susan King (Richfield, MN/Academy of Holy Angels) had nine points and nine assists and junior Bethany Donaphin (New York, NY/Horace Mann) contributed nine points and seven boards... Stanford held Santa Clara to just 32.1 (18-of-56) percent shooting from the field, including a 28.6 (6-of-21) percent clip from behind the arc. CARDINAL DROPS SEASON OPENER: Behind a combined 37 points and 28 rebounds from twin sisters Jerkisha and Jermisha Dosty, Saint Mary's College defeated Stanford 77-65 last Friday night in Moraga... The Gaels led by seven (30-23) at the half, and stretched the lead to 23 midway through the second half (52-29, 12:29)... The Cardinal cut the lead to 10 (61-51) with 4:41 to go, but could get no closer... St. Joseph's Academy) added 11 points and three 3-pointers and freshman point guard Susan King (Richfield, MN/Academy of Holy Angels) 10 points. CAREY'S CAREER CUT SHORT: The Stanford University women s basketball program announced on Tuesday, November 7th that Jamie Carey has ended her collegiate career because of recurrent concussions... In her one year in the women s basketball program, Carey turned in one of the finest freshman seasons in Stanford history... She was named the 1999-2000 Pacific-10 Conference Freshman of the Year and earned Freshman All-America honors from Basketball News, the Women s Basketball Journal and the Women s Basketball News Service... She set a Stanford single season 3-point record with 81, and finished 14 th in the nation and second in the conference in 3-point percentage at 45.5 (81-of-178)... Carey, who will remain a Stanford student, also ranked 12 th in the nation in 3-pointers per game with 2.8 as she helped lead the Cardinal to a 21-9 record and the second round of the NCAA Tournament... In 29 games (all starts at the off-guard position), she averaged 11.0 points, 3.0 assists and 2.2 rebounds per game. A LOOK AT THE 2000-01 CARDINAL: Head coach Tara VanDerveer welcomes back all-conference honorable mention selections Carolyn Moos and Lauren St. Clair as the Cardinal fields one of its deeper squads... Moos, a senior center, led the Cardinal in scoring at 12.4 points per game and led the team in rebounding for the second straight season at 5.4 per game... Senior Sarah Dimson and junior Bethany Donaphin, who both started more than half of the Cardinal's games last year, each shot better than 50 percent from the field in 1999-2000 and ranked 2-3 on the team in rebounding (Donaphin 5.4 pg, Dimson 4.5)... Junior Lindsey Yamasaki was a Pac-10 All-Freshman selection and the team's leading scorer two years ago, while 6-foot-7 junior Cori Enghusen and junior forward Enjoli Izidor both improved their scoring
