PRESEASON CHATTER O Boyle s squad was picked to finish 10th in the Atlantic 10, with Dayton being the league favorite. Sophomore guard Keira Robinson garnered Preseason Third Team honors. BUILDING AN IDENTITY When O Boyle took the reigns at VCU, the teams Fury identity disappeared. In several preseason interviews, she said she expects that the Rams will create their own identity and build a new culture this year. BACK ON THE COURT Last season, the freshmen class accounted for 1,046 points, which was the sixth highest total in the country by a freshman class. In all, 43 percent of the Rams points last season were scored by the seven true freshmen. Sophomore guard Isis Thorpe averaged 12.3 points per game, which was the most by a freshman since Quanitra Hollingsworth recorded 14.7 per game in 2005-06. The last VCU true freshman (Hollingsworth was a redshirt) to average better than 12 points per game was Rochelle Luckett (12.8) in 1998-99. Sophomore Keira Robinson, who earned All-Rookie honors, is among the returners to the Black & Gold after a record-breaking freshman campaign. Robinson led the Rams in assists per game (6.3), and set the school record for most assists in a single season by a freshman (200), which is the third-best in a season. NEW FACES FOR THE BLACK & GOLD Not only is the VCU Women s Basketball staff a new set of faces to the bench, the Rams also added four players to the 2014-15 roster. Chadarryl Clay, who was on the team last season, but was ineligible to play due to NCAA transfer rules will make an immediate impact for the Rams. Clay, a transfer from Auburn, averaged 6.1 points and 2.2 assists during her last nine SEC games. VCU also added Ashley Pegram, an NJCAA All-American from Chesapeake Junior College. Curteeona Brelove is the lone true freshman on the team. She hails from Malone, Fla. and had a very successful high school career at Malone. Shanice Johnson, a transfer from Delaware, is also new to the VCU program. However, she will sit out the 2014-15 season due to transfer rules. She will have three years of eligibility beginning in 2015-16. 2014-15 ATLANTIC 10 STANDINGS (prior to games played on Jan.11) Conference Overall Team W L W L George Washington 3 0 14 2 Fordham 2 0 10 5 St. Bonaventure 1 1 11 4 Dayton 1 1 10 4 La Salle 1 1 10 5 VCU 1 1 10 5 Rhode Island 1 1 9 5 Duquesne 1 1 9 6 George Mason 1 1 9 6 Saint Louis 1 1 8 7 Richmond 1 2 9 6 Massachusetts 1 2 7 8 Saint Joseph s 1 2 5 10 Davidson 0 2 4 11 EARLY GRIND: THE SCHEDULE The Rams started the 2014 season at home with a pair of games, before beginning a six-game road swing. THE O BOYLE ERA On April 29, 2013, Beth O Boyle was introduced as the 13th head women s basketball coach in program history. She inherits a program that was 22-10 last season, and reached the WNIT. VCU returns three starters and over 50 percent of their scoring from last year s team. O Boyle won her debut with the Rams on Nov.14 when the Rams defeated Wagner, 84-75 at the Verizon Wireless Arena. She picked up her 100th career win against Texas-Pan American during her first season with the Rams. CLOSING IN ON ALL-TIME TOP 10 Sophomore Keira Robinson, who dished out 200 assists in her rookie campaign is nearing the top-10 all-time in assists. The streak dates back to January 25, 2014 when VCU defeated conference rival George Mason, 112-86. It is tied for 14th in the nation for the longest home court win streak.

Following a successful three-year run at Stony Brook, Beth O Boyle was introduced as the 13th head coach in VCU Women s Basketball history on April 29, 2014. O Boyle inherits a VCU program that was 22-10 a year ago and has reached the postseason six times since 2007-08. My expectations will be high, but my goals will be simple, O Boyle said. I want our players to excel in the classroom, to be the best student-athletes that they can be. On the court, they will compete. We will practice hard. We will get after it in the Atlantic 10. I think the Atlantic 10 is one of the best conferences for women s basketball in the country. O Boyle assumes the reigns at VCU after she led Stony Brook to a remarkable turnaround in three seasons on Long Island. The Seawolves improved by 10 wins in each of the last two seasons, including the 2013-14 campaign, when O Boyle guided the club to a school Division I record 24 wins (24-9), and a WNIT bid, the program s first postseason appearance since 2006. Stony Brook reached the America East Championship Game last season, the school s first appearance in the final since 2001-02. O Boyle was also pivotal in the development of 2014 America East Defensive Player of the Year Chikilra Goodman. In 2012-13, Stony Brook s 10-win turnaround was the seventh-best in the country. O Boyle was 42-51 overall in three seasons with the Seawolves. During O Boyle s tenure, Stony Brook was known for its stout defense. In each of her three seasons, the Seawolves ranked in the top 50 nationally in scoring defense. In 2013-14, SBU allowed just 60.5 points per game, the 45th-best mark in the country. The Seawolves also ranked 20th nationally in rebounding margin (+7.7). We had a lot of really good candidates. A lot of high-level coaches, a lot of high-level people had interest in the job, and what it really told us was what we already knew, VCU is the place to be, said VCU Director of Athletics Ed McLaughlin. One person rose above everyone else in this search, not only because of what she has done as a coach, but what she has done as a person and where we think she can take us in our women s basketball program. Prior to guiding the Stony Brook program, O Boyle spent four seasons as an assistant at Canisius. She helped steer the program to its best season in 2008-09, when the Golden Griffins won 24 games and advanced to the Metro Alantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship Game. Canisius also received a WNIT bid for the first time in program history. Hired as an assistant coach at Canisius in 2007, O Boyle was elevated to associate head coach in November 2009.
