After beginning the season 0-6, with all games played in the state of Texas, the Mean Green went into Swinney Recreation Center and stomped UMKC by a score of 65-47. The 18-point win came after North Texas led by as many as 25 midway through the second half. Bre Dawkins led the team with 15 points, five rebounds and three assists, and was named the College Sports Madness Conference USA Player of the Week. It s Not How You Start... This season s 0-6 start was the Mean Green s worst coming out of the gate since 1994, when North Texas began the season 0-7 before defeating Southwest Texas State December 30 by a score of 57-55. The team s first seven opponents that season were Oklahoma, Baylor, Texas, SMU, Harvard, at South Florida and UC Irvine. The Mean Green defeated UMKC on December 14 to avoid matching that 11 year-old streak. They re Free for a Reason... A focus in practice all season long has been making free throws. Through seven games, North Texas is shooting an unfathomable 47.6-percent from the stripe, down drastically from a 64.1-percent mark in 2013-14. It could be a case of small sample size, as returning letterwinners shot 67.8-percent from the foul line last year. Things can only go up from here, as the Mean Green ranks dead last (343rd) in the NCAA. Oklahoma Aberration... Even though North Texas is 1-6 on the season, five out of the six losses have been within 10 points. The Mean Green s 68-39 loss to the Sooners on December 7 was the largest margin of defeat (29). All five of the other losses have been by a combined 28 points; Houston by four, Northern Colorado by five; UMass by 10; Eastern Illinois by two and SMU by seven. California Dreamin... San Francisco comes into this matchup with a 5-0 home record at War Memorial Gym and a 23.4-point average margin of victory. The Dons just returned from a three-game road trip, where they went 2-1 against UC Davis, Long Beach State and Seattle. USF has four players averaging over 10 points per game; Taylor Proctor (13.6), Zhane Dikes (10.8), Taj Winston (10.3) and Rachel Howard (10). As a team, they are averaging 69 points per game and have eclipsed the 80-point mark twice. Last Game Recap KANSAS CITY, Mo. Exhale. Seven games into the season, North Texas women s basketball s goose egg has finally hatched. Following their most complete - and in turn dominating - performance, the Mean Green defeated UMKC by a score of 65-47 to improve to 1-6. North Texas took its first lead at 4-3 and led by as many as 25 midway through the second half, as the Kangaroos were overmatched from start to finish. Just as it has been all season, the Mean Green defense stifled UMKC all day long. The Kangaroos committed 24 turnovers, including 15 in the first half alone. The home team attempted only 40 shots, compared to 60 for North Texas. Head coach Mike Petersen was very pleased with his team s performance on the defensive end, just like he has been all year. The encouraging thing for this group is defensively we ve played very hard, stayed with the plan and been very disruptive, he said. [UMKC] had been shooting the ball really well this season, but we were very disruptive and made them turn the ball over. Something out of the norm for the Mean Green was its positive performance on the offensive end. North Texas had three players reach double figures; seniors Briesha Wynn and BreAnna Dawkins combined for 29 points, as each shot 7-16 from the floor. Junior Acheil Tac had her best game of the season in the paint. The forward scored 11 points on 5-8 shooting and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. North Texas scored more than 60 points for the first time this season, and set a new season high by shooting 46.7-percent from the field. Dawkins 15 points were a teamhigh mark, as well as a season high by the guard who just participated in her graduation ceremony less than 24 hours before tip off.

Since being introduced as the seventh coach in North Texas women s basketball history on April 16, 2012, Petersen has changed the perception of North Texas women s basketball into that of a contender. Prior to arriving at North Texas, Petersen was the head coach at Wake Forest from 2004-12 and is the school s all-time winningest coach. He is a coaching veteran with over 30 years of experience, including three seasons as the head coach at TCU. Petersen guided Wake Forest to unprecedented heights in leading the Demon Deacons to the postseason in three of the past four seasons and winning 72 games, which is the best stretch in Wake Forest women s basketball history. He has also been a head coach at Gonzaga (1985-89), New Mexico State (1992-96), and TCU (1996-99). Petersen also spent five seasons with the Minnesota men s basketball team (1999-2004), serving as associate head coach for four seasons. Prior to taking over at TCU, Petersen was the women s head coach at New Mexico State University from 1992-96. In his four seasons with the Aggies, Petersen recorded three consecutive 20-win seasons and compiled an 81-38 (.681) overall record and a 53-19 (.736) record in Big West Conference games. Petersen began his head coaching career in 1985 when he accepted the head women s coaching position at Gonzaga University. During his first season, Petersen led the Zags to a 21-10 record and missed the NAIA National Tournament by a game. After an 11-16 record in their transition year into NCAA Division I, Gonzaga captured the West Coast Conference title in its inaugural season and only their second year at the Division I level.
