CAPITAL ONE ARENA VILLANOVA WILDCATS (20-6, 11-2 BIG EAST) Head Coach: Jay Wright Record at VU: 442-171 ~ On Sunday, St. John s limited Villanova to 18-of-54 shooting from the field (.333). That represented VU s low field goal percentage in a BIG EAST game this season and its second lowest field goal percentage in a 2017-18 contest (.318 on Nov. 14 vs. Michigan). Its 16 turnovers tied a 65-59 win at Providence for the most in a BIG EAST game this season. ~ Freshman forward Saddiq Bey returns to the DMV as a key member of the Villanova rotation. On Monday the Largo, Md., natve was tabbed as the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for the first time this season. Last week the 6-8 forward was on the BIG EAST Honor Roll. The product of Sidwell Friends School - also the alma mater of former VU All-American Josh Hart - has started 19 games this season and averages 8.3 points and 5.1 rebounds per outing. ~ While the 2017-18 Villanova edition was marked by a high-powered attack, the 2018-19 model leans more on a stingy defense than did its predecessor. VU leads the BIG EAST in overall scoring defense (66.7 points per game), is fourth in defensive field goal percentage (.433) and ranks third in the conference in vs FEBRUARY 20, 2019 6:30 P.M. Cremo notched a season-high 14 points, including 4-of-7 from beyond the arc, to pace the Wildcats in scoring. ~ The Hoyas and Wildcats met back on Feb. 3 at the Wells Fargo Center, with Villanova pulling away over the final five minutes to record a 77-65 win. Sophomore guard Collin Gillespie delivered a season high 30 points to help lead the Wildcats in Philadelphia. The product of Archbishop Wood High School added five rebounds that day as well. ~ Villanova dropped from No. 13 to No. 17 in this week s Associated Press Top 25 after its loss Sunday to the Red Storm. It moved down three spots in the USA Today Coaches poll to No. 16. ~ The Wildcats will conclude a stretch of three straight on the road when they visit Xavier on Sunday afternoon (1:30 p.m.). The Wildcats (20-6 overall, 11-2 BIG EAST) were 13-of-30 from the field in the first half (.439) but just 5-of-24 in the second half (.208). They were unable to solve the Red Storm s defense after building a 29-10 lead over the game s first 11:10. Villanova scored just 36 points over the final 28:10 as St. John s (19-7 overall, 7-6 BIG EAST) bottled up the Wildcats seniors, Phil Booth and Eric Paschall. Graduate transfer Joe Cremo led Villanova with 14 points, sinking four 3-pointers on the day. Booth added 13 points while Paschall posted a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds. St. John s enjoyed a 26-5 advantage on fast break points. After missing its first nine attempts from beyond the arc, St. John s then made 8-of-14 from deep. There was great energy in the Garden and it was great Big East basketball, stated Villanova head coach Jay Wright of a contest played before a sellout crowd of 19,812 at Madison Square Garden. I thought in the first half we were good. In the second half, they just took us out of it. They took us out of everything. We couldn t execute any offense. A lot of our turnovers and missed shots turned into transition baskets for them. That was the game. This really was the tale of two halves. A pair of early 3-point field goals one each from sophomore Collin Gillespie and freshman Saddiq Bey helped the Wildcats gain an 11-6 edge over the opening 4:46 of action. VU limited the Red Storm to 3-of-9 shooting in that span. The Wildcats third triple of the day this one from the corner by Cremo put the finishing touches on a 9-2 surge that helped Villanova craft a 20-8 lead with 12:48 to play in the first half. Consecutive 3-pointers from freshman guard Jahvon Quinerly helped VU construct a 26-9 edge. When Booth picked up his second foul call with more than six minutes to play in the period, the Wildcats were presented with a NEWS AND NOTES new challenge playing without one of their pillars for an extended stretch. St. John s generated some offense off of steals and at the free throw line to narrow its deficit to 37-23 before Booth returned with 35 seconds to play before intermission for a final possession. After a Wildcats miss, a Justin Simon heave from the Red Storm end of the court went in just before the horn. That was St. John s first made 3-pointer of the period and capped a 16-7 run that carved the Villanova lead to 37-26 at intermission. It probably did get them going, noted Paschall. But we tried not to worry about that. We kept trying to be solid and doing what we do, added Cremo. Marvin Clark II scored the first points of the second half, this time on a more conventional 3-point field goal to cut the deficit to 37-29. And then the game settled into a rugged defensive battle with both teams finding the sledding rough on offense. Villanova pushed the lead to 48-34 before an 11-0 Red Storm run shaved the margin to 48-45 and brought the packed house alive. We try to stick to 94 by feet, Paschall said. The Wildcats were in the midst of a field goal drought of more than four minutes. An LJ Figueroa 3-pointer with just over nine minutes on the clock narrowed the gap to 49-48 with just over nine minutes on the clock. After Booth drained two free throws, a Mustapha Heron long ball tied the game at 51. A dunk by Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree gave the Cats a 53-51 edge before Figueroa sank a 3-ball to give the Red Storm its first lead at 54-53. There were just under seven minutes to play in regulation time. Booth s driving bucket gave VU a 57-55 lead but then came another Red Storm deep ball, this one from Figueroa. After a free throw from Justin Simon, the home team led 59-57 as the game dipped below the three minute mark. The Wildcats could never dig out of the hole, though, ultimately falling 71-65. Credit St. John s, Wright said. They were tough and physical and took us out of everything we tried to do in the second half. Four Standouts Signed For 2019 NEWS AND NOTES Four elite prospects have signed national letters of intent to enroll at Villanova University in the fall of 2019. Bryan Antoine (Eatontown, N.J.), Eric Dixon (Abington, Pa.), Justin Moore (Ackokeek, Md.), and Jeremiah Robinson-Earl (Shawnee Mission, Kansas) signed letters in November. This is as well-rounded a class as we ve had, stated Villanova head coach Jay Wright. Antoine attends the Ranney School and is at No. 12 in the ESPN Top 100 rankings. He has averaged no fewer than 20.5 points per game in his first three seasons, including 21.1 ppg in 2017-18. Dixon, a 6-8 forward, averaged 24 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 1.5 blocked shots as a junior in 2017-18 at Abington (Pa.) High School. He is at No. 68 in the ESPN Top 100. Justin Moore (No. 48 in the ESPN Top 100) averaged 16.6 points per game as a junior in 2017-18. The 6-4 guard made a verbal commitment to Villanova in May Robinson-Earl began his prep career at Bishop Miege High School in Kansas before moving to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. The 6-9 forward averaged 21.5 points and 7.6 rebounds per game last season at Bishop Miege. Antoine and Robinson-Earl were both named to the prestigous McDonald s All-American Game on Jan. 24. They become the 15th and 16th players with Villanova ties to be selected as a McDonald s All-American. Among the most recent to have been on that list are 2018 National Player of the Year Jalen Brunson and current freshman Jahvon Quinerly. Finn Facts The Wildcats carry a streak of 182 consecutive regular season sellouts in the Finneran Pavilion and a lifetime mark of 300-63. Villanova sports a 7-2 record in its new home after posting a Feb. 13 victory over Providence (85-67). Villanova Athletics partnered with EwingCole, an award-winning architecture and engineering firm based in Philadelphia, to transform the Pavilion from a multi-purpose and recreational facility into a world-class basketball-centric arena. The renovation celebrates the uniqueness of the original arena which opened on Feb. 1, 1986 while creating an unmatched Division I basketball experience for Villanova student-athletes and fans. The upgrades include McMahon Way, an outdoor plaza for pre-game and post-game activities; a relocated main entrance that will serve as a gathering place for fans; a Hall of Fame, with graphics and memorabilia celebrating the rich history of Villanova Athletics; a 360-degree concourse hosting a variety of concessions, merchandise stands and other fan amenities. The Finneran Pavilion is a $65 million, fully donor funded renovation, which was led by 20 leadership gifts of $1 million or more and 130 major gifts of $100,000 or more. The lead gift was presented by William Bill Finneran, a 1963 Villanova School of Business graduate with a degree in Economics. Villanova is 4-0 thus far at its home away from home, the Wells Fargo Center, with victories over Quinnipiac, Xavier, Seton Hall and Georgetown. It returns to South Philadelphiha to host Butler on Saturday, March 2.
