Founded 967 Enrollment 6,000 Colors Green, White & Black OPENING TIP After a pair of three-point victories in-a-row, Bowling Green is off to a 3- start, which is the best start through four games in the Michael Huger Era. With Bowling Green s 09-06 overtime win over Lake Erie on Monday (Nov. 20), the Falcons improved to 3-0 in overtime games under Michael Huger. Last season, BGSU picked up an overtime win over Kent State (Feb. 7, 207), and a double overtime victory over Toledo (Feb. 4, 207). The Falcons are set to compete in the Creek Classic, as they will play three teams for the first time in program history. BGSU will battle USC Upstate (Nov. 24), Campbell (Nov. 25) and Abilene Christian (Nov. 26) over a three-day span. Through the first four games of the 207-8 season, three different Falcons have recorded a 20-plus point game. Justin Turner has had games off 33 (at Drexel) and 20 points (FGCU), while Dylan Frye scored 23 versus South Dakota, and Demajeo Wiggins dropped 25 on Lake Erie. In each of the last two games, Dylan Frye has made a game-winning field goal in the final minute of regulation or overtime to give the Falcons a win. He gave BG the win over FGCU with a three-pointer with 0.9 seconds left, and then converted a layup in overtime with 45 seconds left to down Lake Erie. USC UPSTATE HUGER S THOUGHTS ON THE CREEK CLASSIC I am thrilled to be going into the Creek Classic with a 3- record. However, there is still plenty of work that needs to be done. This tournament features three really competitive teams that will challenge us in a variety of ways. Each team has a completely different defensive and offensive approach, so it will be a great test for our young team. We will play three games in three days, which is always a challenge both physically and mentally. My staff and I believe this tournament will be great preparation for MAC play. SCOUTING THE USC UPSTATE SPARTANS The Spartans, a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference, went 7-6 (7-7 A-Sun) last season. USC Upstate returns eight letterwinners and three starters to this year s squad. The Spartans are coached by first-year coach Kyle Perry, who took over the program in October, and is currently operating under the interim tag. Perry is in his ninth year at USC Upstate. USC Upstate is 2-3 on the young campaign, losing to Minnesota, Georgia and Charleston Southern, while picking up wins against Allen and Paine. The Spartans are 2- at home, and 0-2 on the road. Through the first five games of the season, USC Upstate is averaging 75.6 points per game, and shooting 40.9 percent from the floor, and 35.3 percent from three-point territory. Spartan opponents are averaging 74.6 points per game, and shooting 42.9 percent from the field, and 29.7 percent from downtown. USC Upstate is shooting 69.6 percent at the charity stripe this season. The Spartans are averaging 4.0 assists, and 2.0 turnovers in 207-8. USC Upstate has struggled rebounding the ball this season, averaging just 34.6 rebounds per game, and owning a 8.6 rebounding margin. Offensively, the Spartans are led by junior forward Malik Moore, who is averaging a team-high 5.0 points per game, while ranking second in rebounds, averaging a 5.6 mark. Junior guard Jure Span is scoring 4.0 points per contest, and leads the team in assists with 5. Span is shooting a team-best 62.5 (5-of-24) percent from downtown. Senior forward Ramel Thompkins is averaging a team-high 8.2 rebounds, and is also scoring.8 points per ballgame. In Michael Huger s second season as head coach in 206-7, BGSU saw a two-win MAC improvement. With a win at Drexel to open the season, BGSU began a season -0 with a true road win for just the fourth time since 982-83. Dylan Frye hit a career-high five triples vs. South Dakota, marking the first time that a Falcon hit five threes in a game since 2/4/7. BGSU beat FGCU, despite a 3-point deficit, marking the team s biggest comeback in a win this season. Derek Koch s 4 rebounds versus South Dakota were the most from a BGSU true freshman since 999. BGSU registered 26 assists vs. Lake Erie, which were the most in a game since dishing out 29 in a win over Earlham on Nov. 9, 203. Justin Turner s 33 points at Drexel were the most points ever scored by a BGSU freshman. Dylan Frye is 2-for-28 from downtown to start the season, bumping his three-point percentage up to 40.8. Turner scored 9 second-half points, and finished the game 2-for-9 from the floor, including a 4-for- 7 mark from downtown. The Detroit native s 33 points were the most scored by a BGSU freshman ever. Since 2000, BGSU players have scored 30-plus points a total of 25 times. Only two of those games, including Turner s, have been turned in by freshmen. His 33 points were the most scored by a Falcon since Spencer Parker scored 33 points at Detroit Mercy on Dec. 2, 205. Only three players have scored 30-plus points at BGSU under head coach Michael Huger. Along with Turner and Parker, Zack Denny dropped 30 in an epic win over Toledo last season. In a win over Florida Gulf Coast, Turner posted 20 points, seven rebounds and four steals. PLOWDEN PROVIDING A SPARK Freshman forward Daeqwon Plowden has provided a huge spark off the bench in each of Bowling Green s first four games. Most-recently, Plowden set career highs in rebounds (8), assists (3) and minutes (22). He also scored seven points. While playing in his hometown of Philadelphia in the season opener at Drexel, Plowden posted nine points, three rebounds, one block and one steal. He went 4-for-5 from the floor and -for-2 from threepoint range. In the Falcons home opener against South Dakota, he went 3-for-5 from the field, -for-2 from downtown, and racked up seven points, seven rebounds, and two blocks. IT S EASY AS -2-3 For the first time in his career, sophomore Rodrick Caldwell has scored 0-plus points in threeconsecutive games. Caldwell started his streak with 0 points versus South Dakota, engineered behind a 6-for-6 effort at the free throw line. The sophomore then went 5-for-0 from the floor, scoring points in a home victory over Florida Gulf Coast. The Dayton native then had arguably the best game in his young career on Nov. 20 in an overtime win over Lake Erie. Caldwell posted 8 points, one shy of matching his career high, while notching a careerhigh eight assists. He also racked up three steals and three rebounds. On the season, the sophomore is averaging.8 points, 2.8 assists,.8 steals and.5 rebounds per game. #DEEPFRYE Dylan Frye has made at least two three-balls in each of the first four games of the season. He is now shooting 42.9 percent (2-of-28) from downtown on the season. In his most-recent game, he poured in 9 points and hit three triples versus Lake Erie. He hit the biggest #DeepFrye of his career in the win over Dunk City, as he gave BGSU an 83-80 victory with a three-ball with 0.9 second left. He finished the game with 5 points, six rebounds and two assists. In Bowling Green s home opener versus South Dakota on Nov. 3, Frye scored 23 points, one shy of his career high. Last season versus Ohio (Jan. 28, 207), he scored 24 points. Frye s 23 points marked the fourth 20-plus point game of his career, and his first in non-conference play. He also made a career-best five triples, as he went 5-for-0. Frye is now shooting 40.8 percent from-point territory for his career. He has now hit multiple threeballs in 4-career games. CAN T KEEP UP WITH KOCH Last week, freshman forward Derek Koch averaged 2.0 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists. He followed that effort up with seven points, three rebounds and three assists versus Lake Erie. Koch s playmaking ability has also been on full display, as he s posted at least two assists in each of the last three games. The 6-foot-9 big man recorded 5 points, 4 rebounds, two assists, two blocks and one steal versus South Dakota. Koch s rebounding total in the contest was especially historic, as he became the first BGSU true freshman since 999 to pull down 4-plus rebounds. On Jan. 23, 999, Len Metala registered 6 rebounds at Anderson Arena in a contest versus Ohio. In BGSU s win over Florida Gulf Coast, the skilled freshman came up one point shy of another doubledouble, as he posted rebounds and nine points. AGENT ZERO Freshman Nelly Cummings is coming off the best game of his career versus Lake Erie, as he posted 2 points, five steals, one assist and one rebound in a career-high 30 minutes. His 2 points and five field goals were career highs, as well. He had a number of huge plays in the overtime win. With seconds left in regulation, he gave the Falcons a two-point lead with an offensive rebound and layup. In overtime, a steal and a layup gave BGSU a one-point lead with 3:33 remaining. In games against South Dakota and Florida Gulf Coast, he scored eight points and seven points, respectively. Cummings is averaging 9.0 minutes per game, and is averaging 6.8 points.

PAGE 9 BIG GAMES FOR BIG MAJ Junior forward Demajeo Wiggins started every game last season for the Falcons, and has continued his strong play into the 207-8 season. Through the first four games, Wiggins is averaging 4.3 points and 6.3 rebounds, while shooting 52.8 percent from the field and 73. percent from the charity stripe. In BG s win over Lake Erie, the junior went 8-for-5 from the floor, 9-for-2 from the free throw line, and scored a career-high 25 points. Wiggins had 0 points and five rebounds in the second half of the FGCU win, and finished with 4 points, marking his second 4-point game of the season. He also posted 4 points at Drexel. THE LONE FOX After coming to the program in 204-5 as a walk-on, Matt Fox earned a scholarship last season, and in 207-8, is the lone senior on the squad. Fox leads the team with 69 appearances, and earned his second-career start on Nov. 20 in Bowling Green s 09-06 overtime win over Lake Erie. The senior, who has posted three assists in each of the last two games, went 4-for-5 from downtown versus Lake Erie to finish with 2 points. A three-point specialist, Fox is a 39.0 percent three-point shooter for this career, and 4 of his 68 career field goal attempts have come beyond the long line. In 207-8, Fox is averaging 22.0 minutes, 4.8 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists. DOING GOOD WORK Sophomore guard Ethan Good continues to be a tremendous representative of BGSU, both on and away from the court. Good has one of the highest GPA s in the conference. The chemistry major currently owns a 3.600 GPA. In July, Good was placed on the 207-8 Council of Student-Athletes Executive Committee. Only two other MAC student-athletes are on the committee. Good is also a representative on BGSU s We Are One Team (WAT) group. The group uses sport as a forum to create a dialogue between stereotyped groups on campus, including (but not limited to), BGSU Athletics, minority groups, faculty, administration and the general student body. A WELL-ROUNDED LILLARD Although Antwon Lillard s 206-7 scoring numbers were down from his freshman season, the junior guard increased his outputs in virtually every other statistic, as he clearly became a more versatile and well-rounded player. Lillard pulled down more rebounds in 206-7. His offensive rebounds were essentially the same (38 as a freshman, and 36 as a sophomore), but Lillard posted 3 more defensive rebounds, and increased his per game rebounding totals from 3.4 to 4.2. Last season, Lillard s playmaking increased tremendously. After posting 2 assists as a freshman, he racked up 45 assists as a sophomore, bumping his season average from 0.6 to.5. Lillard got to the free throw line more last season, and improved his free throw percentage from 62.9 to 67.7. Additionally, Lillard committed 0 less fouls as a sophomore, while pushing his season block totals into the double digits, as he blocked 2 shots in 206-7 after picking up nine as a freshman. STROH-CENTURY Bowling Green s next game will be its 00th at the Stroh Center all-time. The Falcons will take on San Jose State on Nov. 29 at 7 p.m. Since the Stroh Center opened for the 20-2 season, Bowling Green owns a 60-39 record. BG used a 9-0 run in the second half to erase a 0-point halftime deficit. For just the fourth time since 982-83, BGSU began a season -0 with a true road win. The three previous times that BGSU started a season -0 with a true road win came in 996-97 (at James Madison), 204-5 (at Drake), and 982-83 (at Cornel). SINCE DAY ONE Although the Falcons only have only one senior, Bowling Green has three upperclassmen that have been at BGSU since head coach Michael Huger took over the program. Senior Matt Fox, and juniors Demajeo Wiggins and Antwon Lillard, along with Huger, are entering year three together. The trio of Falcons also lead the squad in games played. Fox has appeared in a team-high 69 games, while Wiggins (68) and Lillard (64) have each played over 60 games. RECRUITING ON THE RISE Michael Huger and his staff have proven to be elite recruiters at BGSU, according to multiple recruiting databases. BGSU s most-recent recruiting class was ranked the top recruiting class in program history, according to ESPN.com. Furthermore, ESPN tabbed both Nelly Cummings and Derek Koch as three-star recruits. In BGSU s previous recruiting class, which was Huger s first full cycle of recruiting, given that the early signing period had already passed when he was hired in April of 205, all three scholarship players were rated as three-star prospects. In that aforementioned class, Rodrick Caldwell (Scout), Dylan Frye (Rivals) and Justin Turner (Rivals) earned three-star ratings. SIGNATURE WINS IN 206-7 In 206-7, BGSU posted several signature wins during Michael Huger s second season. The Falcons picked up a pair of home wins over Toledo and Akron, snapping multiple streaks in the process. BGSU defeated Toledo in an epic double-overtime thriller, 04-00, and then 7 days later, the Falcons earned a last-second win over Akron by a score of 66-65. The win over the Rockets snapped Toledo s six-game winning streak over the Falcons, and marked BGSU s first victory over Toledo since Feb., 202. The victory over the Zips snapped Akron s 7-game winning streak over BG, and marked the Falcons first victory over Akron since March, 2009. In between those two games, the Falcons went on the road and beat the eventual MAC Tournament champions in Kent State, 84-83, in overtime on a tip-in with.3 seconds remaining. MAC WIN-PROVEMENT In head coach Michael Huger s second season in charge, the Falcons made some obvious improvement within the conference. After a 5-3 mark in the MAC in 205-6, the Falcons went 7- in 206-7. Last season, Bowling Green matched its MAC win total from 205-6 with seven conference games to play. Additionally, the Falcons earned a better seed in the MAC Tournament. In 205-6, BGSU was seeded 2th, while in 206-7, Bowling Green was seeded ninth. (SR) Zack Denny 30 2/4/7
