CAUCASUS MOUNTAINS Dagestan Tur, Kuban Tur, Mid-Caucasian Tur, Caucasian Chamois

Dagestan Tur Eastern Tur (Capra cylindricornis) also called Dagestan Tur, or Pallas Tur after 18th century German zoologist Peter S. Pallas, or Caucasian bharal because its horns resemble those of a blue sheep. Males: shoulder height 31-39 inches (79-98 cm). Weight 120-175 pounds (55-80 kg), sometimes to 220 pounds (100 kg). The female is about 20 percent smaller. Somewhat smaller and decidedly darker in color than the west Caucasian tur. The coat is uniformly reddish-brown in summer, with underparts whitish and the tail, breast and lower legs darker. Turns a uniform dark brown in winter, with underparts slightly lighter and the tail, breast and lower legs much darker. There is a small white rump patch. Beard is dark and very short (up to three inches (7.6 cm) in length), and difficult to detect in some animals.the horns are quite unusual for a goat, being smooth and rounded, curving above and behind the neck, with the tips turning inward and upward. Very similar to those of the Himalayan blue sheep or bharal, but are more massive. Average trophy is 32 35 (81 89 cm) with some trophies up to 40 (101 cm). The record was taken in Azerbaijan. Left horn - 45 inches (114,3 cm) long, 13 7/8 inches (35,3 cm) circumference at the base; Right horn - 43 4/8 inches (110,5 cm) long, 13 7/8 inches (35,3 cm) wide the base. Dagestan Tur Hunting areas Camps & Accommodation Base camps are comfortable wooden lodge with beds and shower or tented camp with simple conditions located at 5,700 feet (1,900 m). A good skilled staff makes you feel comfortable. Hunting Hunting is done on foot with option of horseback in the earlier and later time of period. It is a spot and stalk hunting with a big portion of hiking. Driven hunts can be done, if necessary. Spike camps are used intensively in order to avoid the most difficult part of vertical hiking. They are set up at 8,500-9,000 feet / 2,700 3,000 m. It happens often, that one spots rams right from a spike camp. Climate Weather is normally sunny with occasional showers and fog. Kuban (Western) Tur Kuban Tur (Capra caucasica caucasica), also called West-Caucasian Tur, acquired this name after the Kuban river in the North Caucasus. Only comparatively small part of Caucasus Mountains holds population of Kuban Tur. The west Caucasian tur is a large, heavy-set goat, with measurements quite similar to the Siberian Ibex. The summer coat of the west Caucasian tur varies from rusty grey to rufous-brown, while in winter the coat dulls to a grayish-brown (in older animals this may be much lighter). There is no distinct dark dorsal stripe as in some other ibex species. The chest is a dark reddish-brown. The moult of the winter coat begins in March and extends to mid- June. The guard hairs and underfur of the coat begin to grow longer during September and the full winter pelage is fully grown in by the end of October. The horns grow to 31 to 35 inches (80-90 cm) long, exceptionally up to 39 (100 cm). The width of the horns is clearly demonstrated by the basal circumference, which - 11 inches (30 cm) - may be over 30% of the total horn length. West Caucasian tur inhabit subalpine and alpine regions between 2.600 to 13.000 ft (800 and 4000 m) above sea level. Although the mountains in their range can reach 16.500 ft (5000 m), the permanent snowline restricts most tur to heights of 5.000 10.000 ft. Forest-covered slopes, often near steep rocky crags, are the primary habitat of this species. We take you in the areas close to West- Caucasian reserve. All the world record Kuban Tur trophies were taken there. As additional trophy after harvesting Kuban Tur we can offer hunt for Caucasian Chamois. 5

Kuban (Western) Tur Hunting area Route You will arrive to an international Moscow airport. Our PRO interpreter will meet you at the airport and assist you through customs. You will be taken to the hotel. Next morning we will take you to the airport for the flight to Mineralnye Vody (North-West of Russian Caucasus). Your flight will last around 1 hour 40 minutes. Camps & Accommodation Accommodations are in tented camps at 5,100 feet / 2,700 m. Electric generator is used at the base camp to provide lighting and charging. Shower is available at the late summer time. Area West side of Karachay Cherkessia Hunting season August 1 to begin of November with the best period from September 1 to October 15. Climate Weather is quite unpredictable. Day and night temperatures have big amplitude because of altitude and surrounded glaciers. Afternoon fog is a normal condition. August mid- September: Daytime highs are 77 to 80 F (22 to 25 C) with lows of 35 to 40 F (3 to 10 C). In mid- September October daytime temperatures are 50 to 60 F (10 to 15 C) with about 20 F (- 5 C) at night. Snow can be expected at the tops in first decade of September. 6

Kuban (Western) Tur Hunting Horseback ride and backpack hiking is our favorite way to provide hunting for Kuban Tur. Expect extensive horseback riding, considerable walking and hiking. Some knowledge and experience with horses and ridding is a must. During the day you may travel the upper edges of the mountains, glassing the hillsides and feeding areas. A temporary tented camp is set up with the specific goal of hunting a particular animal or area. Rams are generally located in very remote country at 10,000 feet / 3,000 m. Once the trophy is spotted you complete your stalk on foot. Physical condition is an important factor in the stalking part of the hunt. Shooting distance is 250-350 yards (200-300 m) on average. Schedule Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 10 Day 11 Day 12 arrival in Moscow, overnight in Moscow (if need) flight to Mineralnye Vody, 1 hour 40 minutes, 3 hour transfer by vehicle to Karachaevsk, overnight transfer to the hunting camp, accommodation 7 days hunt travel back to Karachaevsk, overnight flight to Moscow, departure from Moscow 7

Mid-Caucasian Tur Some Turs live on the eastern side and called Dagestan or Eastern Tur the other live on the western side of the Caucasus Mountains of Russia and known as Kuban (Western) Tur. Mid-Caucasian Tur (Capra caucasica caucasica), is considered in the areas where these two species are mixed. Compared to the true west Caucasian tur (subspecies dinniki), the severtzovi race to the east (but still west of Mt. Elbrus) is described as slightly taller, standing 38-43 inches (97-109 cm) at the shoulder. The black horns are somewhat smoother, with smaller cross ridges, and the tips may be closer together. The beard is shorter, being only of moderate length. Summer coat is reddishgray, with forehead and chest darker and browner; front of legs darker, becoming black near the hoofs; belly and inner thighs a dirty white. A darker dorsal stripe may or may not be present. The Caucasica race from Mt. Elbrus eastward to Mt. Dykhtau was originally described as a hybrid between severtzovi and the east Caucasian tur (cylindricornis). This is confirmed by recent observers who describe a wide variety of hybrids from this area, often in large herds that include a number of different forms. Individual horns are said to vary from supracervical like those of cylindricornis, though often with cross ridges like those of dinniki, to long and scimitarshaped like those of dinniki, but relatively smooth like those of cylindricornis. The caucasica race is generally darker in color than the severtzovi race, and with a dark dorsal streak. The winter coat is dark brown. The record Mid-Caucasian Tur was obtained in Russia (Kabardino-Balkaria). Length of the left horn - 30 5/8 inches, length of the right horn - 33 1/8 inches; circumference of the left horn at base - 12 1/8 inches, base of the right horn - 12 inches. 9

During the summer month, herds of chamois wander alpine meadows above 1800 meters/6000 feet in home ranges averaging 74 hectares. As winter approaches there is a general downward shift to lower altitudes (below 1100 meters/3630 feet), where the chamois may enter forested regions, although they remain near steep cliffs. Area of distribution of Caucasian chamois is the Caucasus Mountains of Russia, Georgia and Azerbaijan, and also in the Lesser Caucasus of southwestern Georgia near the Turkish border.
