Coach s Philosophy Under 9 football is for fun and fun only, I want all players to thoroughly enjoy their experience of AFL so they may become lifelong participants of the game as a player and or supporter. My goal for this season is for all players to increase their skill level, participate for the entire season and return in 2010. I will be coaching the boys for the future, not the present, an enormous emphasis will be placed on fun, skill development and total participation. Each and every player will be treated equally regardless of age or ability. At no stage will I refer to the score during a game or indeed change my coaching behaviour due to the score. I will ensure all players experience all playing positions and all players receive equal ground time. Success will only be measured by the size of the boy s smiles. I will always display and foster respect for the umpires, opponents, coaches, administrators, other officials, parents and supporters and as parents, I expect you to do the same. Learning will be enhanced by positive reinforcement and acknowledging good performance or behaviour s at no stage will I criticise a player and as parents, I expect you to do the same. 5
Training and game day expectations Training Training will be held on (Insert training time), training will not go beyond (finishing time). In the advent of heavy rain, training will be cancelled, please ring my mobile to confirm training on such occasions or log onto (insert club website). Training will be predominantly skill based with most activities/drills in pairs, pair activities increase the number of possession each player receives at training and therefore increases a player s skill level. It s great when a parent pairs up with their son. Skills to be taught this year will include: Kicking drop punt, both feet Handball both hands Marking chest, finger, overhead and diving marks Bouncing dry and wet weather, both hands Ruck work both hands Evasive skills side step, baulk and dummy Picking up General ball handling touch activities Leading - forward, sideways and backward 6
Game day Please arrive at the ground (in football gear) at least 20 minutes prior to the start of the game. The team manager will allocate jumpers on game day. All players will be rotated through all three zones every game, and play in one zone twice for the first and last quarters, teams are 12 a side, we currently have 10 players, if you have a friend at school looking to play AFL bring him/her down to training. Games are 4 by 10 minute quarters. Parents will be emailed a progressive total of quarters played in each zone, this email will be sent weekly. Appropriate parent behaviour is paramount on game day, please read the attached AFL Kids First brochure outlining the aims of the program and why children play sport. Inappropriate behaviour will not be tolerated, I trust you all have your son s interest at heart and inappropriate behaviour will embarrass you, your son, other parents, players and the club. Please barrack for (Insert team) but also acknowledge the efforts of the opposition. 7
