A Word From The Publisher The Skeet year is winding down. We hope you had a great one. The World Shoot will be shortly and many of you will be attending. We wish you all the best! This month we have eight shoot reports with pictures to share with you. One report is on the Junior World which was well attended this year. The youth competing (and the sponsors) had a great time. If you helped any of them get there, Thank You for your contributions and support. October is my favorite month. The weather is as good as it gets. After the World Shoot, Skeet shooting opportunities dwindle until Spring. Many folks are focused on hunting all manner of critters and fowl. How many of you have an old Side by Side shotgun in your closet or gun safe? Maybe you are like many people I know and have more than one. Have you ever thought about shooting competitively with a Side by Side? Well there are some folks who do enjoy that. If you think you would enjoy a Fun Shoot with old fashion Double Barrel fun, check out the ad on page 13 for the first Rebel Side by Side Shoot. Several Side by Side enthusiasts have arranged this fun shoot at the Capitol Gun Club in Jackson, Mississippi for October 12. The entry fee is only $60 and it looks to be a blast! Yes, you can shoot black powder if you want. As always we say thanks to the clubs that are sending us flyers, shoot reports and photos. We really appreciate the contributions from those looking to promote their clubs and the sport. The Red Chute Gazette is still the best free advertising you will get for your club and our readers will appreciate your contributions too. Yes, we have more Hat Shoot Events to share this month. Isn t that great! Don t forget to remember those serving to protect the freedoms secured by our forefathers in your prayers.. Until we meet again in these pages or on the Skeet field, I am wishin you 3 @ 8. Doug Frey Page 2

Twenty five competitors converged at Bayou Boeuf Skeet Range in Lecompte, Louisiana the first weekend in August to shoot the annual Doubles Marathon hosted by Wade Jones. Wade always rolls out the Southern hospitality at this two field club which is centrally located for Louisiana shooters. While we love Wade, he has some of the best shade to be found on a Skeet field and he feeds us well too! Earlier this year Wade had Ottis Monroe cook up a Catfish lunch for the 28 Gauge Marathon. It was so popular, Wade had Ottis make a return engagement.. Yum Yum! Todd Young shot a 191 for the high score, Ben Hulsey was right behind with a 190. Junior shooter Cohen Holomon was the next highest shooter with a 188. Todd Young, Jacob Young, James Curlee, Troy Scallion & Wayne Tanner Page 8

Rocket City Rocket Open City Open Roy Jorgensen The sorely missed Rocket City Open (RCO) is back again (at last)! This long time Northern Alabama event, which was last held in 2010, passed into oblivion with the closing of the former host club in Lacey s Spring, AL in 2012. The event has been resurrected by the MARS Skeet & Trap Club at Redstone Arsenal, AL, which is the home club of NASA s Marshal Space Flight Center. What could be more logical then a bunch of Rocket scientists (and dedicated skeet shooters) hosting the RCO in a town known as Rocket City, at a post where many of our space vehicles and missiles were designed and first tested? Some traditions just can t be allowed to die! The 1 st annual RCO at Redstone Arsenal was held on 2-4 August at the MARS Skeet & Trap Club; and they welcomed 25 shooters from the region to reestablish this highly regarded skeet shoot. The event was opened by the Redstone Arsenal Garrison Commander, Colonel William Marks, who fired the traditional ceremonial first shot at low 7! Colonel Marks, who is an avid hunter, smoked the bird using a borrowed Krieghoff K-80 that he was firing for the 1 st time! He enjoyed the experience so much that he proceeded to repeat the shot just for fun (with the same outcome)! Prior to his shooting, he wasn t informed that had he missed he would have incurred certain traditional liabilities that are associated with a miss at that station! Having recently taken command, the Colonel stated that he looks forward to learning more about skeet shooting and, if possible reestablish expanded shooting opportunities at the Arsenal! He indicated a willingness to work, in partnership with Arsenal employees and tenants, to facilitate such activities (subject to budgetary limitations of course). Colonel, we appreciate your refreshing outlook towards the shooting sports! As part of the opening ceremony, the Redstone Arsenal 5-Man Skeet Team presented the Colonel with the trophies that the team had won while representing the Arsenal at both the recently held Armed Forces Skeet Championships, at Camp Lejeune, NC and the Alabama State Championship, held at Fort Rucker, AL. Page 14

Rocket City Open Roy Jorgensen The Redstone team swept the state championship winning all 5 individual events as well as the High Overall Average Trophy (combined 5 event score). (Tom Pyburn representing FMWRC, AL HOA team trophy; Gary Hunter, 20 gauge team trophy; Colonel Marks, Garrison Commander; Mark Haughs,.410 bore team trophy; Layne Merritt, 12 gauge team trophy; Larry Krutsinger,.410 bore individual trophy and the Armed Forces 5-Man Team Trophy; Alan Cotney, 28 gauge team trophy) Another tradition that must be observed is one known as the hat shoot event, which means that fellow shooters get to shoot the hat of any competitor shooting their 1 st straight (i.e., not missing a target) in any event. We had one competitor who successfully shot 100 straight for the first time in the 28 gauge event! Gary Hunter (LTC Retired), who works for the Space & Missile Defense Command, shot his first ever 100 straight in the 28 Gauge event of the 2013 Rocket City Open. Page 15

Rocket City Open Roy Jorgensen Gary s 100 straight was one of two shot in that event, which ultimately earned him 28 Gauge Gun Champ runner-up points, as well as the loss of his prized hat! Congratulations Gary! The weather proved to be the story for this event, with temperatures in the low to middle 90 s and humidity in the upper 90 s, shooters were treated to a typical summer weekend in Alabama! Even with the heat and humidity, many shooters commented that they posted the best scores they ever shot, while shooting in the heat of Alabama. This speaks highly of the efforts of the shooters and the MARS club members who worked hard to ensure that Good Targets would be thrown! The recent field renovations, including the installation of 4 new multi-column traps, were enjoyed by all who shot this event! Everyone seemed to have a good time in spite of the hot, humid weather. Most have indicated their intent to return next year for the next Rocket City Open! We hope to see you there! NOTE: If you re interested in learning more about skeet shooting, classes are available from Family and Morale Welfare and Recreation (FMWRC). Contact them at (256) 837-0750 or (256) 876-4868 Event winners included: Ed Hope (TN), 12-gauge event; Larry Krutsinger (AL), 20-gauge event; Allen Winstead (MS), 28-gauge event; Layne Merritt (AL),.410-bore event; Winstead, high overall; and David Thompson (AL), doubles event. Summer Breeze Open Although the weather was looking sketchy, the Hurlburt Clay Target Sports Club hosted its third registered shoot, the Summer Breeze Open, from 26-28 July. Sixteen shooters turned out despite the weatherman's prediction for rain most of the weekend; and except for one short break for lightning and a little drizzle early Sunday morning, we had great shoot weather. Robert Trawick - R/U, Darrell Loup - CH, Wyatt Hampton - 3rd Four doubles shooters started the fun on Friday afternoon. Darrell Loup from Baton Rouge took Doubles Champ by running his first 100 straight. His hat paid the price though. Robert Trawick was Runner-up with an 88 and Wyatt Hampton took 3rd with an 83. Referee Josh Boyle, Will Jones, Vince Jones, Charlie Heifner, Eric Harris and Chris Weber Page 19

Summer Breeze Open Fourteen shooters had a go with the big gun on Saturday morning with Brian Moore and Darrell Loup both shooting 99s. Darrell conceded 12 Gauge Gun Champ to Brian since he had to leave before the shootoffs. Mark Beaudoin from Havana, FL took 3rd with a 96. Robert Trawick, Kenny Mills, Mark Beaudoin, Darrell Loup and Kent Lillie In the afternoon, nine shooters hit the field for the 20 gauge event. Brian ran em all for the Gun Champ title while Darrell pulled down his second Runner -up with a 98. Ralph Aaron, from Ft Rucker, Alabama, took 3rd with a 97. We started the 28 gauge event on Sunday morning with seven shooters and a light drizzle, which happily stopped as the first squad finished round two. Brian Moore and Eric Harris both posted 96s, with Eric taking the Gun Champ title in the shoot-off. Will Jones, shooting in his first 28 gauge competition, took 3rd with a 93 and lost a good hat in the process by shooting his first 50 straight. Six shooters went to work in the afternoon with the.410. Brian Moore took his third Gun title of the shoot with a 98. Robert Trawick was Runner-up with an 89 and Ralph Aaron took 3rd with an 87. 28 Gauge Champion Eric Harris and R/U Brian Moore Page 20

Summer Breeze Open Brian Moore, Jim Butterworth and Ralph Aaron When the dust had settled, Brian Moore was HOA Champ with a 393. By the time we figured out that Robert Trawick and Ralph Aaron were tied for Runner -up with 363s, they'd both already left for home. Robert won the coin flip for Runner-up, giving Ralph HOA 3rd. Although we sweated the weather a little bit, and the humidity a lot, we ended up having another great shoot. Our fourth and final shoot this year is the "Salute the 7th/ Hurricane Open" September 13-15. We hope you can join us for some great skeet shooting on Florida's Emerald Gulf Coast! Hotel room rates drop significantly and the beaches are much less crowded after Labor Day. Visit us at www.hurlburtfieldskeetclub.com. Good Shooting folks! Arkansas State Championships Mike Galloway Takes Arkansas State Title (by Jerry Leding) Blue Rock Sportsman s Club in North Little Rock was host once again to the Arkansas State and Open Championships, but with a couple of welcome twists - a desirable date change - July 12-14 and $1,950.00 in added money. Normally, moving an outdoor event from September to July in the Arkansas River Valley, would be looked at with some 'weather skepticism'. Any of that was soon forgotten, as we enjoyed highs of only 93-89-89, low humidity, and a breeze for the 3 day event. Fortunately, the warmest day was Friday, when only one event took place. Tommy Moore of St. Louis won the Doubles Open Championship with a 99 and Tommy Reedy (98) was AR Champion and Open R/U. Caile Bradham (97) from Mississippi was Open 3rd. Kim Crutchfield (97) and Mike Galloway (95) were AR R/U and AR 3rd. Hal Matthews smoked and served up a great dinner of baby back ribs, beans, slaw, and potato salad. Four varieties of homemade fruit cobblers and ice cream topped off the meal. (Desserts furnished by the Bella Vista Skeet Club.) Tommy Reedy - Arkansas Doubles Champ Saturday was a really beautiful day. Besides the pleasant weather, we featured a relaxed 2 rotation tournament schedule in order to start a little later, finish a little earlier, give our excellent referee crew time to eat lunch, and for us to hold our annual meeting of the ASSA. Lunch (Sat. and Sun.) was grilled burgers, dogs, and all the trimmings - furnished, as all meals were, by the ASSA. John Howell - 12 Gauge Champion John Howell won the 12 gauge Open and AR Championship with 100, Tommy Moore (100) was Open R/U, and Caile Bradham (100) was Open 3rd. Ryan Howell (99) was AR R/U and Kim Crutchfield (98) was AR 3rd. Page 23

Arkansas State Championships Gary Matthews from Oklahoma was the 20 gauge Open Champion with a score of 100. David Bryan (100) was the Open R/U and AR Champion. Richard Karstetter (99) was Open 3rd and AR R/U. Mike Galloway (99) was AR 3rd. After the shoot-offs, 18oz rib-eyes, sautéed onions, mushrooms, baked potatoes, salad, and dinner rolls were served. Even though everyone appeared to be full, most found room for the second wave of cobblers and ice cream. Sunday morning dawned with a few light clouds. Tommy Moore was in the winner's circle for Open Champ again David Bryan - AR 20ga & 410 Champ with another 100. Frank Callahan (100) from Mississippi was Open R/U, and Gary Matthews (100 - and "3X" at this point) was Open 3rd. Mike Galloway (99) was AR Champ. Tommy Reedy (98) was AR R/U, and Ryan Howell (97) was AR 3rd. After lunch, before the.410 Championship began, we had a shoot-off to determine the winners of the "2-Man Blind Drunk Draw". Tommy Moore & Gary Matthews, Mike Galloway & David Robustelli, and Marie Callahan & Davis Minton were the 3 teams competing. After a prolonged shoot-off involving "spots", the team of Callahan and Minton prevailed. Mike Galloway AR HOA, HAA, & 28 Gauge Champ The great weather held through the.410 event and David Bryan showed up in the winner's circle again - this time as Open and AR State Champ with 99. Bo Echols (99) was Open and AR R/U. Mike Galloway (97) was Open and AR 3rd. HOA Open Champ was Tommy Moore with 394. Mike Galloway (392) was Open R/U and AR Champ. Caile Bradham (392) was Open 3rd. David Bryan and John Howell shared AR R/U and AR 3rd with a pair of 391's. HAA Open Champ was Tommy Moore with 493. Caile Bradham (489) was Open R/U, and Mike Galloway (487) was Open 3rd and AR Champ. John Howell (482) was AR R/U and Ryan Howell (478) was AR 3rd. On behalf of the ASSA, I would like to thank all shooters for attending, our great referees, Clark Hartness for running the computer, the cooks, servers, groundskeepers, and Blue Rock for being our host. QUOTABLE QUOTES Thinking Walter D. Wintle - 1905 If you think you are beaten, you are If you think you dare not, you don't, If you like to win, but you think you can't It is almost certain you won't. If you think you'll lose, you're lost For out of the world we find, Success begins with a fellow's will It's all in the state of mind. If you think you are outclassed, you are You've got to think high to rise, You've got to be sure of yourself before You can ever win a prize. Dog Days Open I The Red Chute Shotgun Sports Club hosted the Dog Days Open1 on August 17, 2013. We had 21 shooters for this 50 targets per gun venue. Not everyone shot all the guns, but everyone had fun! It was warm, but not as hot as you would expect for August. The competition was hot. As usual with the Micro Shoots, there was a plethora of shoot-offs. We have scores and pictures for you. Matthew Holmes came from Tyler, Texas to shoot his first Skeet shoot at our club. He showed us how we should do it with the only 50 straight in the big bore event. Todd Young took the 20 Gauge Champion honors with the lone 50 in the yellow shell event 12 gauge Champion Matthew Holmes poses with his Dad Jason Page 39

SKEETER S PONDERINGS It seems to me that the target moves in two directions in the wind: Away from a perfectly executed shot and into the worst move you ve made all day. Skeeter s Word of the Month: Lymph (v. ): To walk with a lisp. Page 45

Dog Days Open II The Toby Bancroft Memorial Gun hosted the Dog Days Open I1 on Sunday, August 18, 2013. The weather was hot and so was the competition. Funnies As we slowly move through retirement, we need to keep ourselves occupied with small projects...like this guy. I know, I saw it right away too... No safety glasses or hearing protection. And I caught something else that is really important: he has no gloves on. I might be up in age, but I am still tack as a sharp! Page 54

$ Buy, Sell or Trade $ Kolar 12 gauge O/U with interchangeable Kolar tubes for 20 gauge, 28 gauge and.410 bore. The 30" barrels and all tubes have screw in chokes. Includes a carrier barrel for the tubes matching the weight between the 12 gauge gun and the sub gauges eliminating the need for a barrel weight. This gun has fine figured wood, an adjustable comb and 15" LOP in the rear trigger position. LOP is approximately 15 1/2" if the trigger is moved forward. This gun was custom built for a Skeet shooter who used it for 2 seasons. It is still very tight and in 98%+ condition. It comes in a Kolar/Americase. $11,000. Call Ken Comeaux (504) 328-1370. $ Buy, Sell or Trade $ For Sale: Browning 425 20 ga. 30 barrels w/ Briley Companion 410 tubes w/ 2 skeet & 1 Imp. Skeet chokes w/ Browning Hard Case $2,000.00 Firm This rig was set up to be my back up competition skeet shotgun. It has been shot very little over the past 6 years of ownership. I have added a new pad and have had the forcing cone lengthened along with a trigger job to shoot the tubes. Trigger has been lightened to 5#. Length of pull is 14-15, depending on the adjustable trigger. Wood is in good shape with only slight blemishes at the top of the comb. There is no rust, the action is tight. Trigger assembly has been cleaned and adjusted as mentioned above. Briley can custom fit a 28ga tube set for this shotgun. My competition shotgun is this same setup but with a 525. An excellent starter shotgun for a youngster or a lady. Much lighter than a 12ga. I am not shooting skeet as much now, so I do not need an extra back up shotgun. Call 318-268-1514. THE RED CHUTE GAZETTE DEAL Mission Statement The goal of the Red Chute Gazette is to promote the game of American Skeet. Our target market includes Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas. Our goal is accomplished through publication and distribution an Internet only magazine containing items of interest to those individuals participating in, promoting and supporting registered skeet shoots. Subject matter includes calendars of upcoming events, shoot flyers, shoot reports and pictures. Also included are articles and stories about bird hunting, travel and food. The Deal The Red Chute Gazette will publish flyers advertising registered skeet shoots for your gun club at no cost to your club. Simply send us your flyer in Microsoft Word or PDF format via E-Mail. That s FREE! The Catch If we agree to publish your shoot flyers, you agree to provide us with a shoot report, write-up or article suitable for printing in the Red Chute Gazette. Include pictures (jpeg or gif files) if possible. It doesn t have to be lengthy and it doesn t have be worthy of a Pulitzer. Just tell or show our readers about the fun you had. What about Sporting Clays and Trap or other events? The mission of the Red Chute Gazette is to promote interest and participation in registered Skeet. Sporting Clays and Trap are not subjects we focus on. We recognize that many gun clubs offer events other than Skeet. We are happy to provide commercial advertising space for clubs that wish to promote other shooting related events. We are happy to offer a special package deal to clubs that support our magazine. If your club buys an ad in the Red Chute Gazette for a full year (1/4 page or larger), we will not only include your ad in 12 issues, we will include any shoot flyers (please limit flyers to two pages) for sporting clays, trap or other events your club promotes in those issues at no additional charge. 2013 Advertisement Rates for Gun Clubs Promoting Shotgun Sports Quarter Page 1/3 Page Half Page Full Page Annual Rate $125.00 $166.50 $250.00 $500.00 Single Issue Rate $37.50 $50.00 $75.00 $150.00 These rates have been substantially discounted for gun clubs.
