Welcome The Food and Drink Festival is a two-week celebration showcasing Stroud's outstanding food businesses. We are delighted that the event has doubled in size this year, with more events and promotions for you to try. Whilst there are now lots of Food and Drink Festivals across the UK, many of them are clones of each other, involving outside exhibitors and celebrity chefs who are specially brought in for the event. In Stroud we wanted to do things differently and celebrate the local - the businesses that are here every day of the year. We think we have something to be proud of. So we set our colleagues the challenge of creating new ways to show off what they do best. The resulting programme is an interesting mix of new foods, themed events and special promotions. In an era dominated by supermarkets and multinationals, it is easy to lose touch with where your food comes from and who makes it. We are lucky to still have a great range of independent cafes, restaurants, markets, pubs, shops and producers who are part of the lifeblood of the local community. This festival forms part of a successful Shop Local campaign that has been running all year. Above all, the Stroud Food and Drink Festival is a celebration. It's an opportunity to eat, drink and be merry with loved ones and friends. To enjoy simply being here in Stroud, in what many of us consider the loveliest place on earth. Greetings and a very warm welcome to Stroud Now in our third year, the Stroud Walking Festival is getting bigger and better! Offering around 40 different walks, we continue with our aim of highlighting the wonderful countryside in which our town nestles. It s a Festival which, we believe, will open your eyes, stimulate your senses and reveal to you many of the hidden treasures of this enigmatic part of The Cotswolds - one of Gloucestershire s best kept secrets! Spread over 17 days, there is something for all tastes and abilities. Try a gentle stroll around our Museum in the Park, or a 26-mile marathon to Miserden and back. There are chances to explore pubs, local history, nature and Stroud s famous green credentials. This year we re going even further afield with walks around Arlingham, Chalford, Wotton and Dursley. All walks are guided and most are free. The most popular ones require tickets with all monies going to Teckels Animal Sanctuary at Whitminster from where we got our lovely dog - a Saluki called Suki (above). A big thanks to all the local organisations that have given up their time to help plan this event; to Stroud Town and Stroud District Councils who ve provided the funding; and to Stroud Life, Stroud News and Journal, MySingleFriend.com and SoGlos.com for their sponsorship and support. Friday September 4th WALK 1: Stroud Town Council Beating the Bounds Our traditional opening to the walking festival. This ll be the official launch of Gloucestershire's newest walking trail with a new leaflet guide and fully way marked route. The W.A.S. Way - Walk Around Stroud uses public footpaths to explore the entire boundary of the Stroud parish. Visiting many quiet, hidden corners, there are fantastic views of the town from each of the five valleys plus a stretch of canal. We'll stop at a Paganhill pub for drinks halfway. Bring a picnic or buy a snack. This is quite a difficult walk - reasonable level of fitness required. Last year's walk was fully booked - get in quick. Start: Uplands Playing Field Car Park off Folly Lane at 10am. Approx 10 miles / 6 hours with lunch break. Terrain: Very hilly. Walking boots essential. Not suitable for pushchairs. It's taken our chefs an age to create the perfect recipe, but we've finally done it! It's the very antithesis of the international, corporate, meat-filled fare found on every other High Street - our unique Stroud Vegeburger. Our secret combination of seitan, herbs, vegetables and breadcrumbs amounts to a quarter pounder-plus of mouth-watering yumminess. Served in an organic bun, it's yeast-free and vegan too, with a delicate, Middle Eastern flavour. Made daily in our kitchen they'll be available to take away or enjoy in our café with a side salad, and apple and onion relish. 1 Gloucester Street, Stroud. 01453 840021 www.staraniseartscafe.com Friday September 4th Stroud Slad Farm The Return of the Stroud Pasty One of the big hits of last year's Food and Drink Festival was the launch of this mouth-watering rival to Cornwall's best. Created by staff at Stroud Slad Farm on the edge of the town, the organic, handmade pasties are made with slow roast beef from the farm's Sussex/Angus cattle, vegetables from the farm, and flour from Shipton Mill, near Tetbury. Such was the demand for the pasties last year, that the farm has had to invest in new kitchen and cooking facilities. As a result, the Stroud Pasty will once again be available, along with other farm produce, in the Shambles market during the first two Fridays and Saturdays of this Festival. 01453 808103 www.stroudsladfarm.co.uk Saturday September 5th WALK 3: Stroud Valleys Project Trees, valleys and views! (Summer Crescent to Catswood via Swift Hill) This is another instalment of the Top of the Town walks, exploring hidden little valleys and tranquil woods. Breathtaking views guaranteed. Join us for an informative walk looking at how these habitats were created, why they re so important for wildlife today and how we are managing them to maintain and improve biodiversity. Along the way we will enjoy spectacular views of the Painswick Valley and a tasty pub lunch at own cost (tbc)! Start: At 10am. Location to be given out at time of booking. Monday September 7th Monday September 7th Monday Sept 7th WALK 6: Stroud Rambling Club Brunel s Viaducts A 5-6 mile linear walk from Chalford to Stroud using public transport. The great viaducts, which carry the GWR Swindon - Gloucester railway line down the Golden Valley were originally built on timber trestles and only later replaced by brick structures. This walk gives us the chance to look at their construction. For much of the walk we shall be beside the Thames and Severn Canal. Lunch-break at Brimscombe, once a thriving inland port where cargo was transferred from Severn trows on to narrow boats to go to the Thames and London. Walk ends at Tesco (coffee shop /loos). Start: At Merrywalks outside the Apollo Cinema at 11am. Approx 6 miles - return @4.30pm. Terrain: Mostly flat. Paths may be wet / slippery. Boots / stout footwear advised. No pushchairs/dogs. Why not come for an evening stroll and watch the sun set over the Painswick Valley whilst learning about some of the wildlife and history that makes the common so special? Start: at 6pm. Wednesday & Thursday 9th /10th September Woodruffs Café Preserving The Harvest - Cookery Course Come and learn the secrets of the past by learning how to utilise the bounty of fresh fruits and vegetables. We will infuse oils and vinegars with fresh herbs, chillies and fruit, capture the sweetness of summer fruits with homemade jams, pickle whatever we can get our hands on, create tasty chutneys, spicy salsas and the sweetest homemade tomato sauce. We will cover basic preserving techniques such as jarring, freezing and infusing. Dinner and wine will be provided, recipes to take away and of course, lots and lots of goodies for your larder! Classes are limited to 6 people and include tea and a snack to begin, professional demonstration and instruction, equipment, recipes to take away, ingredients and dinner of the recipes cooked during the class with wine. No washing up. We will have someone to help with that! Classes are very hands on, in a relaxed and fun atmosphere, teaching a general knowledge of cooking, not just specific recipes. For those who only wish to walk as far as the Daneway, transport will be available to return you to Chalford. For those who choose, the return walk follows the same route as the outward one. Start: Lay-by on A419 Stroud - Cirencester road in Chalford on left hand side at bottom of hill at 11am. Duration: 1.5 hours one way, 3 hours return. Friday / Saturday 11th / 12th September JRooL Bistro Seafood Extravaganza Lunch: 12-2.30pm Dinner: 6.30-9pm One of the most popular of our regular themed menus. For two days only during the Festival Fortnight, we are offering a special menu showing off a range of seafood dishes featuring oysters, crab risotto, lobster thermidor, razor clams and seafood paella. The emphasis will be on fresh, seasonal fish from the coasts of Devon and Cornwall. Sunday September 13th WALK 20: Transition Stroud & Stroud District Council Open Eco Homes Walking around the town we will visit a variety of houses with solar hot water, photovoltaic, wood heating, dry lining, external cladding and more! Some of the houses have been part of Stroud District Council's innovative Target 2050 Project, which seeks a 60% cut in household carbon emissions by 2050. Strolling through the fields towards Rodborough we will visit a new house built with sustainability at its heart, and the newly opened Elite Efficient Energy information centre, where many renewable heating systems are displayed. Festival Competitions 32 * FESTIVAL COMPETITION 1 * Woodruffs Organic Cafe Do you have the recipe to create the best seasonal soup in Stroud? In the lead-up to the festival Woodruffs will be running a special competition in conjunction with the Stroud News and Journal. They are looking for local people to give them their favourite soup recipe. It may be one that has been passed down through the family, one that you've picked up from your travels, or even one that you've created yourself. Recipes need to be for either vegetarian or fish soups, and ideally with ingredients that are both seasonal (for the September period) and can be sourced organically. Our chef Erin will select her three favourite recipes from those submitted by August 8th. The three entrants will then be invited into the café one evening to help create their soups. After a good sampling the best soup will be selected to be served in Woodruffs café every weekend during the festival fortnight.
