In the semifinal, Bohn and Aaron beat Hester and O Neill 230-180 to advance to the title match against top seed Belmonte and Ochocinco. Marquez, the former president of the International Bowling Pro Shop and Instructors Association, was Director of Training at the Metro Detroit Bowling and Resource Center the last three years. While president for IBPSIA, he created training-course curriculum and certification programs for the bowling industry. But as far as the Super Bowl goes, it was a spectacular Hardwick was younger when he was selected as PBA s first Player of the Year in 1963 at age 22. It s absolutely amazing, Tackett said. I switched to 16 pounds at the end of the 2015 season, had some success and just kept doing what I do. I got the ball rolling the right way and kept it going all year. Winning on television gave me a boost in confidence. I always knew I could do that, but to actually win on TV was something else. One thing I ve always noted about the (Player of the Year) award is it s named for Chris Schenkel (the PBA Hall of Fame announced for years on ABC-TV). Most people don t know he was from my home town. Tackett also is off to a great start in 2017, winning the PBA Tour s first event, the DHC PBA Japan Invitational in Osaka, Japan. I m going to stay in the same mindset and try to make TV shows and win, he said. That s why I do what I do try to win. Lavoie, who joined the PBA following a successful collegiate bowling career at Wichita State University, made four television finals during his first year, but none was more impressive than the U.S. Open where he not only won his first title and a major at that but also bowled the first nationally-televised 300 game in the prestigious tournament s colorful history. The sport s oldest major championship began as the BPAA All Star in 1942. Lavoie was involved in a Canadian-dominated Rookie of the Year race with Ontario s Graham Fach, his Team Canada teammate, who drew first blood when he won the Barbasol PBA Players Championship early in the year to become the first Canadian to win a PBA Tour title (also a major). After winning the U.S. Open, Lavoie broke open the race in the World Series, winning his second title in the PBA Shark Championship and finishing the season fifth among the PBA s average leaders (222.79 for 330 games) and seventh in Continued on Page 5 finish to an otherwise very bad game. Shocking that the NFL playoff season was littered with huge blowouts, save for the Cowboys-Packers game, and of course SB 51. As a general rule, I enjoy the parity in the NFL, but I also really like when great teams dominate. This year I felt there were some really great teams, which should have produced great games, but it just didn t happen. And if not for the Brady show in the last 15 minutes Sunday night, it wouldn t have been a great game. Why is it that, why do these great teams get blown out at this time of the year? I think it s a pretty simple answer in most cases. It s the injuries, after 16 weeks of hard-core NFL action, teams and specifically the players are just beat to death. Pittsburgh should play New England pretty tough, but they lose their all-world running back in the first quarter, and their done. The NFL for all of its greatness is such a violent sport that continues to get more violent each year. With that, the injuries to the key players seem to multiply and by week 16 it s the healthiest teams that will have the most success. So that s what makes my football heart sad. We never really get to see the best play the best with all their studs healthy and rolling. What if Gronkowski was playing, what if Julio Jones didn t have a brutal case of turf toe? Maybe it s the same outcome, but THAT s a game I want to see. Boosted by a Christmas Day audience of more than 1 million viewers for the PBA Scorpion Championship presented by Reno Tahoe USA, the six-telecast GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling VIII presented by Silver Legacy enjoyed a 15 percent increase in viewership year-over-year to close out the 2016 PBA season on ESPN. The Christmas Day audience was the highest for a PBA event on ESPN in two years. After I got the second one, I thought if I could get the first few strikes of Game 3, I would be able to shake some of the nerves and have a chance at doing it, said Esposito, who had two 800 series with a high of 822 prior to Friday s performance. My friends and teammates were trying to keep me calm, talking about work and keeping my mind off of what was happening. Upon arriving to the 10th frame, Esposito stuck to the process that already had got him 33 consecutive strikes to start his set and was unfazed by his surroundings. I knew I had a chance to do something that very few people get the opportunity to do, and my mind kind of went blank, Esposito said. I just wanted to do the same thing that had worked all night, not change a thing and let my body take over. All 38 lanes had stopped, and you could ve heard a pin drop. There was absolute silence, and everybody was watching. Despite the final shot getting right of target, the result for Esposito was the same as he entered the record books. BPAA to Honor Richard Dick Corley with Victor Lerner Memorial Medal ARLINGTON, Texas The Bowling Proprietors Association of America (BPAA) is proud to announce the recipients of the 2017 Bowling Industry Service Awards, the most prestigious awards presented by the bowling industry: J. Richard Dick Corley (Bowl New England, Colchester, Vermont) has been selected as the 2017 BPAA Hall of Fame Inductee and recipient of the Victor Lerner Memorial Medal. The Lerner Medal is the highest honor awarded by the BPAA and recognizes an individual for a lifetime of service to the bowling industry and represents the recipient s induction into BPAA s Hall of Fame located at the International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame in Arlington, Texas. Mr. Corley is cited for his nearly 50 years of successful bowling center management in the New England states, his many years of service to the Multi Unit Bowling Information Group (MUBIG) and Strike Ten Entertainment as well as his philosophy in sharing information with fellow proprietors to make the industry stronger. Scott Devers (Mike Aulby s Arrowhead Bowl, Lafayette, Indiana) will be recognized with the President s Medal for his many contributions and years of service to the BPAA, specifically as chairman of the governance committee. The President s Medal is given to an individual (proprietor/ manager) judged to have given exceptional support and/or made significant contributions to the association in the eyes of the current BPAA president. Andy Bartholomy (Andy B s/bartholomy Centers, Springfield, Missouri) will receive the coveted V.A. Wapensky Award, named after BPAA s long-time chief executive officer, Chief Wapensky. Mr. Bartholomy is being recognized for his leadership as longtime Smart Buy Committee Chairman and his enthusiasm for the sport of bowling. He has also been a member of the Multi Unit Bowling Information Group (MUBIG) serving as Vice President as well as actively participating in many FEC groups and conferences. Jason Belmonte (Orange, NSW, Australia) is being recognized with the Dick Weber Bowling Ambassador Award, named after the legendary bowling icon, recognizing his many contributions to the game and sport of bowling, both on and off the lanes. Roger Nyquist (Lake Shore Lanes, Albany, Oregon) will be recognized with the Ruben A. Dankoff Award for Public Policy and Legislative Service for his aggressive debates against employer mandates in the state of Oregon and Linn County. Awarded to an individual or organization who provides outstanding voluntary service on the federal, state or local government level in the development of legislation, public policy initiatives or other political efforts which benefit BPAA members or the industry as a whole, Nyquist has been an invaluable resource for proprietors and is currently serving on the BPAA Legislative Committee. Dave Driscoll (Dave Driscoll & Associates, Mount Dora, Florida) will be recognized with the Special Projects award for his longtime efforts in promoting high school bowling and youth bowling in the state of Florida. He was instrumental in getting bowling a varsity sport in Florida, facilitates state bowling tournaments and helps other states with high school tournaments. Kevin Hong (Normandy Park, Washington) will receive the 2017 Media Award. As a freelance writer, photo journalist and bowling enthusiast, he has visited 57 different locations in 11 states plus Canada to gather information for his Vintage Alleys project. Hong s Facebook presence, website and work featured in many magazines, newspapers and websites earned him the Media Award. The Greater Baton Rouge USBC Association will be recognized at the USBC Convention with the BPAA USBC Association Award, which is presented to a local USBC association who has demonstrated a high degree of cooperation with their local BPAA proprietor group. Usually there aren t multiple rookies who win titles, but I was fortunate to have a strong finish and that s kind of what sealed the deal, Lavoie said. I m sure Graham had the same goal, but only one of us can win. To finally have it official is great. (Winning Rookie of the Year) was a goal, Lavoie said. Every year on Team Canada our coach tries to help us set goals and that s one of the goals I set for myself. You try to aim high, but also set a goal that s feasible. It justifies all of the hard work I ve put in. It s been a great year for Canadian bowling. Smallwood, 39, has been a popular competitor since joining the PBA Tour in 2009. After losing his job with General Motors during the economic downturn, Smallwood decided to pursue his childhood dream of competing on the PBA Tour. He entered the former PBA exempt tour qualifier in Allen Park, Mich., and won an exemption to bowl full-time the following season. But he then pulled off a dream victory, winning the PBA World Championship for $50,000 and his first Tour title, resulting in enormous national media attention that included a feature in Sports Illustrated, network television exposure and major national newspaper features. Smallwood won a second title in the 2013 PBA Scorpion Championship and he has made 11 additional championship round appearances, including runner-up finishes in the 2011 PBA Tournament of Champions and the 2016 PBA World Championship. It s a really a good deal, Smallwood said, adding with a grin, When you don t say much, people think you re nice, but it s nice to be thought of as a good guy. I spend a lot of time with (three-time Nagy award winner) Parker Bohn, and I know what kind of guy he is. To be in the group with him, and the other winners, is pretty cool. Other nominees for the Nagy award included 2015 winner Josh Blanchard of Mesa, Ariz.; Lavoie; Brad Miller of Raytown, Mo., and Jon Van Hees of Charlestown, R.I. Page is the fourth recipient of the Tony Reyes Community Service Award, honoring the popular PBA Tour champion who lost his life following a traffic accident in 2012. Joining previous recipients Parker Bohn III, Missy Parkin and Ed Godbout, Page was nominated for his involvement over the past eight years with the Thomas Cacioppo family in New York in raising money to combat Crohns and Colitis. The Rhino Page Strike Out Crohns and Colitis fund-raisers have generated more than $225,000 to help combat the debilitating digestive tract disorders. In March, Page will expand his involvement by hosting the PBA Strike Out Crohns and Colitis South Open at Boardwalk Bowl in his adopted hometown, Orlando, Fla. The 2016 PBA award winners will receive their awards during the PBA Hall of Fame and Awards ceremonies at the Grand Casino in Shawnee, Okla., on Monday, Feb. 13. The Rebel Classic took place at The Orleans Bowling Center and included six traditional games and 12 two-game Baker matches with total pinfall, including bonus pins, determining the winner in each division. The West Texas A&M men built nearly a 200-pin lead after Saturday s opening round and never looked back, securing the win with a 11,966 total. Iowa Central Community College finished second with 11,526, and St. John s was third with 11,323. West Texas A&M s Tyler Albracht averaged more than 248 for his six-game block, including a 300 game, to earn the top individual honor with a 1,490 total. Arizona State s Chase Nadeau was second with 1,382, and Grand Canyon s Kyle Simi (1,350), Fresno State s Joshua Taylor (1,342) and St. John s Will Blanco (1,318) also finished in the top five. The Grand Canyon women also built an early lead after going undefeated during Saturday s six traditional games and earned the win with a 10,685 total. Here, in a special edition of JPA, are a few of my observations sitting just outside camera range. Oh, if you had the under on my camera time Sunday, safely proceed to the cashier s window. I will have comments in the March Bowlers Journal International from the two Teen Masters Junior Varsity champs (what used to be the U-14 age division), Mabel Cummins and Kirk Mowl on their experience, but I can tell you this. They showed more poise than many adults would have in the same circumstance. They didn t appear too nervous and both bowled wonderfully. Cummins did bowl last summer on CBS Sports Network, but this was Mowl s first time on national television. Terrell Owens really, really loves bowling and isn t afraid to say so. He also knows the touring players are true athletes. Might even tell the story about Quinton Aaron s winning ball some week, too. THE BOWLING NEWS Thursday, February 9, 2017 Page 9 PBA Spare Shots NEW BAYSIDE BOWL GETTING READY FOR PBA LEAGUE, ROTH/HOLMAN DOUBLES IN APRIL While the PBA is moving into the Big February portion of its 2017 season, construction is progressing on the new Bayside Bowl in Portland, Maine, in anticipation of the arrival of the PBA League and Mark Roth/Marshall Holman PBA Doubles Championship in April. Construction of West Bayside Bowl, the new eightlane addition to the facility, will complement East Bayside Bowl, the existing 12-lane side. The new addition is expected to be completed by the end of February. Proprietor Charlie Mitchell said a special grand opening will take place in mid-march. East Bayside will remain as-is with its original bar-restaurant retaining the historic feel of the facility. The Roth/Holman Doubles will use all 20 lanes in East Bayside and West Bayside for preliminary rounds, with the live ESPN finals (on Sunday, April 16 at 1 p.m. ET) and all four televised rounds of PBA League competition (airing on consecutive Sundays April 23-May 14, all at 1 p.m. ET) originating from the new West Bayside lanes. BIG FEBRUARY MEANS A SUPER MONTH OF XTRA FRAME COVERAGE PBA s Big February schedule of major championships means a big month of exclusive live streaming coverage on Xtra Frame, beginning with the qualifying rounds of the Barbasol PBA Players Championship Feb. 7-10 from Wayne Webb s Columbus Bowl in Columbus, Ohio. Detroit will play host to the Junior Gold Championships for the third time in 2019. The 2013 event in the Motor City marked the first time the Junior Gold Championships surpassed the 2,000-participants mark. The event also was held in Detroit in 2008. THE BOWLING NEWS Thursday, February 9, 2017 Page 11 Just Paying Attention Another JPA, another week of stories about how bowling intertwines with the mostwatched event on television in the Western Hemisphere each year, the Super Bowl. For those of you scoring at home, JPA gets written each week about twenty minutes from NRG Stadium. Each Friday before the big game the last few years, NFL Hall of Fame Players, in cooperation with GoBowling.com, and title sponsor, Citibank, host the Pro Football Hall of Fame Players/Legends Bowling Classic. Each five-person team has a Hall of Famer or NFL Legend as the fifth bowler, similar to golf outings. This year s event was last Friday at AMF Stafford in southwest suburban Houston. The evening started out with all the pros introduced by former San Diego (now Los Angeles) Charger Hank Bauer, who is just as good a public speaker as a color analyst for Chargers radio broadcasts. The organizers then led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, then when the recording of the National Anthem didn t start on time, the players started on their own, as we all sang it a cappella. According to my own By Mark London Mark@TheBowlingNews.net count, there were about twenty legends and twenty Hall of Famers. Our group was paired with Keith Byars, running back from The Ohio State University (Jodi Woessner and Jimmy Johnson let me know if the word The is not included) who spent twelve NFL seasons with four teams, most notably the Philadelphia Eagles in the Coach Buddy Ryan era of the late 80 s. Byars had bowled a little bit, but not lately, as he told us beforehand. He did come through as Buckeyes do, marking with the rest of us as we rolled through two games, the first regular scoring, the second was 3-6-9. But unlike league play, teams bowled on only one lane. A vast majority of the participants were casual bowlers. Another source of enjoyment were the pros on either side of our group. On the lane to our left was another running back, another Ohio native, Notre Dame running back Greg Bell. He spent six NFL seasons with three different teams, leading the league in rushing touchdowns as a Los Angeles Raider next to Bo Jackson. Taking what looked like a 12-pound house ball, he was making the pins move. Bell definitely had bowled before, as he quietly confirmed to me afterwards. He had just the right touch with speed and rotation, helping his team to win the event. With a performance ball and a better fit, he could have easily shot a couple mid-200 games. The pro to our right was a little older, but showed as much life as the 20-somethings on his team. Hall of Famer Lem Barney, who spent all eleven seasons with the Detroit Lions, perhaps the best cornerback of his era. Barney showed off his singing voice in his introduction, repeating some of the bars he sang as a background singer in Marvin Gaye s legendary 1971 song, What s Going On. Yes, the pipes sounded just fine. ################ From time to time, the question comes up about why I bother with the JPA Lost Classic, highlighting a TV finals from what you would think is this sport s vast library of television history. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Like other programs of the 1960 s and 70 s, many were recorded, but not saved due to the high cost of videotape and broadcast VTR s. Thus, shows may have aired once or twice, then the tape was reused for another show. Last week, the IBMA Board of Directors (International Bowling Media Association, which I am a board member) received an email about the HBO Legacy Initiative, (yes, the one and only Home Box Office, that HBO) asking if the Association had any of the twenty-one PBA TV finals airing on HBO from June 1973 through July 1975. The network had already checked with the PBA, and no, they don t have any of those shows. They featured a young Dick Stockton, Spencer Ross, and Marty Glickman as lead announcers, with Houston s Skee Foremsky as color analyst. The most familiar HBO produced show I ve seen on YouTube is the 1974 PBA New Jersey Open from that year s summer tour. Frequent YouTube contributor mrbowling300 uploaded the video in various segments in 2007. This was a pretty entertaining show with two PBA Hall of Famers making their first finals, Marshall Holman and Joe Berardi. The other three are also USBC and/or PBA Hall of Famers, Don McCune, Don Johnson, and Carmen Salvino. Stockton was working his way up the ranks to the national level, having just left KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh after a two-year stay. Who knows, Stockton may have included a bowling play-by-play segment on his audition to NBC, as he landed a co-lead announcer job on what was to become a signature game in baseball broadcast history, Game 6 of the 1975 World Series. Next time you see the recording, it s Stockton s voice you hear on the television audio of Carlton Fisk s 12th inning walk-off homer. In the early days of cable, much like broadcast television, bowling was a frequent subject, and HBO was glad to have something to air in its growing rotation of programs.
