She was born and raised in Southern California and is an awesome women who loves the sport of bowling. She is a graduate of Cal-State University where she attended on a full bowling scholarship. She was the California State Women s Amateur champion and 1984 Ladies Professional Bowlers Tour Rookie of the year. She has three professional regional titles, seven state titles, Citrus Belt Queen s title and is a twotime Southern California All- Star team member. One of her most recent accomplishment is capturing the 2011 USBC Senior Queen s title. Paula became the General Manager of Temecula Lanes & Billiards in Temecula, CA on December 21, 2012. My brother Dave (Citrus Belt Hall of Fame for Superior Performance), Ann McGee and I visited this beautiful bowling center on January 26th and really enjoyed our visit with my friend Paula. She is also on the DV8 Regional Pro Staff. Paula has always been a mover and a shaker and has put together numerous tournaments. Her most recent effort is that she founded the Women s Bowling Alliance that is trying to step in for the defunct PWBA. This is an alliance of women who have a passion for bowling. One of the events that really places Paula in a class of her own is that in 1993 Western Women Professional Bowlers (WWPB) she set the Women s Record for the most 300 games in a Single Tournament, three (3) in 28 games. She is in three Hall s of Fame for Superior Performance, Citrus Belt (Inland Empire), Southern California and California State. When Paula isn t bowling she enjoys motorcycle riding, snow skiing and watching sports. Anyone who knows Paula knows she is one of the most kindest, sweetest individuals you will ever meet, and I m so lucky to have gotten to know this young senior bowler. Citrus Belt s KIMBERLY HUDSON Finishes Second at ABT Nationals by Frank Weiler LAS VEGAS The Citrus Belt s Kimberly Hudson finished in second place at the recent ABT Nationals, in the senior division. At the urging of friend and local teammate MARY ANDRUCZYK, Kimberly joined ABT in December. She selected the upgraded gold membership because it entitled her to a free bowling ball. It was just what Kimberly wanted to launch her ABT career. The ball she received and used to nearly win the senior title was the new Storm IQ Tour. It was the ball recommended by EMPIRE BOWL pro shop operator ZACH JELLSEY. The ABT national tournament was only Kimberly s third tournament. She did pretty well for a rookie and looks forward to many more tournaments in the future. She is grateful to her friend Mary for introducing her to the competitive world of tournament bowling. Mary said it would be fun and she was never more right then when I received my 250 check related Hudson. Hudson put together games of 185-180 - 182 = 547 to qualify for the finals, and 199 and 193 during the semifinals. She lost in the championship match because of seven splits! LOS ANGELES In one of the highest scoring televised Baker format doubles title matches in PBA history, comedian and podcast innovator Chris Hardwick and 14-time Tour winner Chris Barnes defeated actor/comedian Kevin Hart and four-time PBA Tour titlist Bill O Neill, 270-267, to win the 5th annual Chris Paul PBA League All-Stars tournament aired Sunday on ESPN from Lucky Strike LA Live. Hardwick and Barnes combined for the last nine strikes in the title match to edge Hart and O Neill for the win. O Neill could have sewn up the match with a strike on the second ball in the 10th frame but left a 10 pin. This has to be the best celebrity tournament ever, said Hardwick, who is the son of PBA Hall of Famer Billy Hardwick. I was excited just watching it, much less bowling in it. They were kicking our butts at first and my mindset was to just not get slaughtered, added Hardwick. But Chris (Barnes) kept me pumped up and said we ve got a long way to go in the match. I have to admit that the pressure of that match got me a little fatigued, but looking back at it that may have helped because being a little tired forced me to relax and not over think it. The board will be frozen with 1 in 5 bowlers advancing to the Semifinals at 8:00 PM with the Finals to follow. The Match Game will go for a Huge 3,500, and the Match Series is estimated at 400 and the 3-6-9 is a nice 2,400 at Mission. Due to poplar demand and suggestions if the Match Game carries over it will then be a Sweet 5,000 at Westminster Lanes next week. triple crown winners, struck on all of his shots including all three in the 10th frame to win the match. Competition began with two Baker doubles elimination rounds of four doubles teams each with the highest-scoring team in each bracket advancing to the championship match. The Baker format requires the pro and celebrity to alternate frames in each game. In the first round Hardwick, creator of the popular podcasts The Nerdist and All-Star Celebrity Bowling, and Barnes, representing their Silver Lake Atom Splitters team combined for a 199 game eliminating Rose and Fagan, representing the Motown Muscle (190), Owens and Duke, representing the Dallas Strikers (186), and Williams and Rash bowling for the BROOKLYN STyLES (143). In the second round, Philadelphia area natives Hart and O Neill of the Philadelphia Hitmen advanced to the title match by combining for a 218 outscoring Griffin and Parkin, representing Billie Jean King s New York WTT KingPins (189), Paul and Belmonte bowling for L.A. X (182), and Woodley and Palermaa bowling for the Pittsburgh Jack Rabbits (177). Between semifinal matches the celebrities participated in the one-ball Super Clash elimination competition which was won by actor Quinton Aaron, who played the role of Baltimore Ravens lineman Michael Oher in The Blindside. Aaron struck on his seventh shot to edge tournament host Paul who had a nine-count. Defending champion Williams was eliminated in the fifth frame. Senior retired competitors have to be sixty years or older. It is amazing that there were over 500 such competitors on hundreds of teams, coming from all over the world, from all five branches of our armed forces. The tournament included an equivalent number of competitors in the active duty and retired (under sixty years) divisions. The tournament is managed by High Roller Inc., led by Brad Edelman. Myself and all my fellow competitors are thankful to Brad and his team for doing such a great job. This years tourney was the 56 Th. annual installment of the Military Bowling Championships. The mission of the tournament is to bring together military bowlers from home and worldwide assignments to participate in outstanding competition. The competition establishes a comradeship that all military members will always look forward to. The tournament features a 50,000 prize fund. The cut scores were +63 for the men and +35 for the women. The Super Seniors added to the board (two men and one Woman) Housep Simonian +61, Tom Dahl +49, and Estela Ventanilla +25. Super seniors are men 63 and over, and for the women a young 55. That would give us 46 bowlers making it to the semi-finals. The High qualifiers for the tournament were Mark Andrews for the men with a +143 and for the women it was Deborah Sanders with a +76. They will get a paid entry into a future regular ABTA event. Each week our top seed draws the Match Series, and this time it was worth 302. Mark would draw the score and he drew a 448. We had two bowlers that bowled the score and it was Mark Anthony Sr and Sunny Fong, they took home 151 each. We will estimate the Match Series at 400 at Mission Hills event. This week it was both Chris Abing and Gino Mansilungan that missed on the last shot. They would split the 50 consultation, and we will go for 2,400 this week at Mission Hills. In our optional doubles, winning were Edmond Del Mundo and Mark Andrews with a 1427 for 110. Finishing in second was Chris Kelly and Rey Josafat Jr with a 1405 for 90. There was a total of 1,190 paid out in doubles and 23 paid spots with low to cash of 1336. This would bring us to our top Beat the Board finals. After the first game the low for the top 16 was +29 for the men and +29 for the women. The top five bowlers were Kelly Wynn and Emily Yeung in a tie for 4th place with a +37. In third place was Leslie Gabriel with a +39. In second place was Leonard Garcia with a +54. In first place was Jack Trongale with a +55. He was also the first game side pot winner for 65. After the second game the low for the women was now +20 and for the men it was +33. The top 5 bowlers after the 2nd game were Emily Yeung in fifth place with a +62, in fourth place was Joey Nepomuceno with a +66, in third place with a +74 was Mark Andrews, in second place was Tim Tran with a +100. He was the 2nd game side pot winner for 70. Still in first place was Jack Trongale with a + 116. After game 3, the Final standings were in, the top 16 was + 9 for the three women and +33 for the men. The three women in the top 16 were Carrie Wong, Leslie Gabriele, and Emily Yeung. Carol: This is Carol Mancini. Steve: Carol! Hey, how ya doin? Carol: I m okay...how about you? Still fighting that cold? Steve: Oh yeah! Carol: Well, you sound better. I m guessing it s your magic elixir. Steve: Ohhhhhhhh...yeahhhhhh! Carol: Still having strange dreams? Steve: I sure am! You ll really like this one! On Sunday I dreamt that something called The Super Bowl was on TV, but I couldn t find it! Carol: That wasn t a dream. The Super Bowl was on TV. Steve: Really? I wonder why couldn t I find it? Carol: Who knows? Were you trying to change channels by using your telephone again? Steve: Just till the battery went dead. Then Beth handed me the remote control. Carol: Now that s funny! Steve: Yeah...she thought so too! She s still laughing about it. But even using the remote I couldn t find the program. Carol: It was on CBS from 9:30PM to 2:00AM, our time. Steve: Are you sure? Carol: Sure I m sure! I watched it myself. Steve: Well, it must ve been blacked out in my area! When I looked, all CBS had on was a football game. Carol: Uh, Steve...the Super Bowl is A FOOTBALL GAME! What did you think it was? Steve: I thought I d gone into a coma and woke up just in time to watch bowling s first-ever national championship match. You know, the super BOWL! Carol: Well, you weren t that lucky. We still don t even have a true national championship format yet. Steve: Oh good...i would have hated to miss it. But hey, if football calls their championship the Super Bowl, what will we call ours if we ever come up with one? The Super Football? I mean, that not only doesn t make sense, it sounds stupid! Carol: That s a real dilemma, but if we ever develop a national tournament, I m sure the powers that be will come up with an appropriate... Steve: I mean, think about it. Chuck Pezzano Dean of Bowling Writers, PBA & USBC Hall of Fame PIN POINTS TO PONDER High average trends make sandbaggers, those who keep their averages down purposely to gain advantage in handicap pins, even more dangerous. Legitimate bowlers have higher averages, the cheaters keep low, thus gaining an even larger spread in handicap events, often too loose in rules and in checking every prize winner. What did Dick Agee, Luke Barlow, Charles Farmer, Jackie Hall, Bob Kwolek, Milt Molhusen, John Powell Jr. and Lewis Ray, all fine bowlers, have in common? At one time they were all listed on the roster of the Fort Worth Panthers of the National Bowling League. And in case anyone asks, the colors of the team were black and white. A dedicated scholar is someone who has discovered something more interesting, intriguing and involved as bowling. Best selling instruction author John Jowdy says that the best things in life are truly free, and also some of the worst bowling advice. You can lose bowling friends, or at least annoy them greatly, if you always keep score, never keep score, or, worst of all, never bother to learn how to keep score. Every bowling tournament, no matter how small, takes plenty of effort on the part of plenty of people. At the least, they are entitled to a little respect even when things don t go perfectly, which they never do. Some people need three and a half instructors to learn how to bowl. Knocking down 10 pins on the first ball earns you a strike on the scoresheet. If you rack up 12 strikes in a row you have a 300 game, yet in reality you have knocked down only 120 pins. So why don t we say the final score is 300 points, rather than pins knocked down. Maybe it s time for a shot clock to speed up league and tournament bowling as is done in pro competition. When will the bowling world understand that a membership card does not make a bowler a pro, nor does the lack of one make the person an amateur in ability. You always hear about champions and winning bowlers being such good sports. Why not? The bowling campus in Texas continues to progress, though the Hall of Fame and Museum could use a lot more space to display the interesting and informative memorabilia acquired over the years. A question often asked is how many balls does a pro bowler use in a year. Some use eight, and others have been known to use 80. Many times the happy ending to a lot of nights of bowling is the simple fact that the night has ended. TV reported that at a recent tournament, golf tournament that is, nice guy Phil Mickelson purchased a lemonade at a stand manned by youngsters and left an amazing high tip, one that if enough struggling golfers or bowlers could count on customers like him they might be better off in the lemonade business. by David Yamauchi Hernandez Strikes For First Open Title Garden Grove The JAT made their way to Orange County for our annual stop at AMF Valley View Lanes. A field of 26 took the lanes in the Open Division on the over-under condition at Valley View. After 6 games of qualifying, Wesley Low Jr. led the field at +181 followed closely by Mark Curtis Jr. at +179 and Brandon Pekins at +132. Parker Brooks was 4th at +87 and Jerome Jordan Jr. rounded out the top-5 at +76. Low-to-qualify was James Knapp at -5. In the bracket, we took 16 and it wasn t nice for the higher-seeded bowlers in round one. Top-seed Wesley Low Jr. fell to 16th-seed James Knapp 2-1 while 2nd-seed Mark Curtis Jr. was dismissed by 15th-seed Chris Valenzuela 2-1. 3rd-seed Brandon Pekins fell to 14th-seed Kirk Chui 2-1 and 4th-seed Parker Brooks was swept out by 13th-seed Jordan Eres 2-0. 5th-seed Jerome Jordan Jr. and 6th-seed Oscar Chan both got through the first round as did 10th-seed Brian Hernandez and 9th-seed Kevin Jones. In the quarterfinals, Kevin Jones got past the streaking James Knapp 2-0 and Jerome Jordan Jr. took three to knock out the local guy Jordan Eres 2-1. Brian Hernandez remained hot sweeping past Chris Valenzuela and Oscar Chan took two straight from Kirk Chui. In the semifinals, on the left side of the bracket Jerome Jordan Jr. took game one 198-197 but Kevin Jones stormed back with a 228-225 win and a 191-139 win to advance to the Championship Match. On the other side, Oscar Chan took game one 204-195 but Brian Hernandez got lined up and took game two 213-161 and stormed to the Championship Match with a 242-171 win. Moving to the banner pair for the Championship Match, Brian Hernandez out-survived Kevin Jones in game one 188-155. Hernandez stayed around the pocket and struck his way to a 201-151 win and his first JAT Open Division title. Nice bowling Brian! GARDEN GROVE Here is the latest news on the JAT Farm Club, coming to you from AMF Valley View Lanes. Our last tournament gave us twenty-two bowlers and it was good to see a couple of them that hadn t been out here for awhile. We also welcomed a few new bowlers and hope that we met their expectations. It was a very good day (except for the rain) with a fair amount of high scores to report as we took twelve bowlers into the second round of match play. Our thanks to the staff and management for the days accommodations. In the qualifying round we had the high game posted up by Eric Torrence with a superb 254. Close behind was Greg Adler with his 243. Nice shooting gentlemen. These two were followed by Daniel Martinez 237-236, Joseph Velick 221-237, Matthew Zweig 237, Shane Pierson 232, Julian Zavala 232, Bert Dominick 225, Patrick Rodriguez 220-224, Stephanie Zavala 223, and Patrick Lofgren 220. Zweig led the field after five games at plus 36, while low to advance came in at minus 95. In match play we added a few more reportable scores with Rodriguez 247-258 starting us off. Next was Pierson 246, Zweig 236, Kylie Shishima 224, and Martinez 222. Javier Zavala made a three position jump to get into the finals, but it was Shishima jumping a big seven positions and into the top five. The finals then started off with the 5th seed Ja Zavala (-33) matching up against the 4th seed Zweig (+42). Zavala jumped out quickly and cruised to a 215-182 victory, and advanced to now meet the 3rd seed Shishima (+45). Here, Shishima took advantage of Zavala not finding his line. Shishima grab this match 180-122. Now against the 2nd seed Martinez (+131) there was just too much Daniel on the floor. Martinez took this game 210169 and on to meet the top seed Rodriguez (+208), in the best of three games. The first game went to the leader Rodriguez 255-203. But the veteran Martinez marched back with a 195-132 game followed by a 185-167 win, to capture his third Farm Club title and second in a row, something only Rodriguez has accomplished this season. Congratulations Danny. Our next tournament will be this Sunday at Keystone Lanes in Norwalk. This will be our second of three PBA Challenges and a reminder that the bowler with the highest qualifying count for all three challenges will receive something nice at the end of the season Check the JAT website on Saturday evening for the oil pattern. PAUL NILSEN Palm Springs 8 Gamer Champ by Frank Weiler PALM SPRINGS The man from Greer Ranch Murrieta went to the desert a week ago and dusted the best scratch bowlers the date palm area had to offer. By averaging 235 during eight games of qualifying, the Citrus Belt s Paul Nilsen was able to qualify third for the step ladder finals in the latest Palm Springs 8 Game scratch tournament. The finals saw the top five finalists bowl one game stepladder matches to determine the tournament champion. From the third qualifying position Nilsen won three match games 237-235, 220-170, 213-204 to clinch the title. The title game saw Paul defeat Citrus Belt legend and top seeded VINCE WOOD. Vince was the first Citrus Belt bowler to roll a 900 series, back in 1999 at the old Cadillac Bowl in Moreno Valley. Paul used his Storm Victory Road and IQ Tour Pearl balls to take home the 850 winner s check. Paul wants to thank the BOWLING NEWS for recognizing his big win.

This week 17 guys raised their average and 47 lowered their average. Was that opportunity knocking or just a bad night on the lanes?? The BOWLIUM Brood is averaging 817. This is a team that meshed well. Jeff Seesholtz entered at 199 and is now 203. Anthony Barone came on board at 183. (He spends a lot of time on his game practicing.) He is up to a proud 203.
