Kentucky Derby Day Golf and Party Saturday, May 7 Mother s Day Brunch Sunday May 8 Centurion Pool Party Friday, May 27 Memorial Day Amazing 100 Year Scavenger Race Monday, May 30 Sylvania Country Club is an inviting private club offering outstanding social & recreational facilities and activities that meet the year-round needs of members, families and guests.

Greg Hibbard General Manager As we enter the month of May, we appear to be trending slowly to better weather. There is a lot of activity going on at the club this month and it starts this Thursday with our Cinco de Mayo Party in the Centennial Grille. The fun starts at 5:30PM and will feature Chef Rich s Taco Bar and great Margarita specials. The Centennial Derby Day Party follows two days later. This annual party is always fun and this year will be even more fun with a centennial twist. Of course there will be the ladies hat contest and this year we will unveil a fun, new game, Derby Trivia. Rounding out the month: *Mother s Day Brunch May 8 th *Tennis Spring Training May 14 th *Ladies 18 Holers Opening Day May 17 th *Wine Club Wine Tasting May 19 th *Centennial Pool Opening Party May 27 th *Memorial Day Scavenger Race May 30 th I would like to recognize Carrie Serber for her effective efforts in recruiting 14 new members thus far this year. This is a great start for us and I have no doubt the momentum will continue in May. This is my last article for the SCC Messenger and I want to express my appreciation to the Board of Directors, the committees, the department heads and the employees for being such great people to work with and work for. My gratitude especially goes to Dr. Michael Rashid and Dan Steinberg for their great leadership in their respective roles as presidents. It has been an honor to serve this club for the past year and a half. Sylvania Country Club is a wonderful club that is destined for continued success and growth into its next hundred years. I am proud to say that I was fortunate to have served here and I know that you too are proud of your club, as you should. I wish you and the club best wishes for the remaining terrific centennial year. Enjoy it; you deserve it! Greg FOOD AND BEVERAGE MINIMUM CHANGES The Board of Directors have reevaluated the food and beverage minimums for full members in order to be more fairly aligned with the new tiered dues structure. Please note the following adjustments effective May 1st. Full Members ages 32-42 years of age = $800 a year (or $200 a quarter) Full Members ages 76 and older = $800 (or $200 a quarter) The minimum for Full Members ages 21-31 will remain the same The minimum for Full Members ages 43-75 will remain the same

Dan Steinberg Club President A Special Message from the President will be coming soon... From the Membership Department A sincere thank you to members that attended the Spring Open House April 21 st. I received many positive compliments from guests regarding the warm welcome they received from our members and the SCC staff as well as kind regards about the Clubhouse. I appreciate everyone s efforts to make the evening a success. April was a terrific month for recruitment. We are thrilled to announce the following new members to Sylvania Country Club: Nicole Banker Alison Brinkman Phil Brondes Peter DeClark Michelle Laser Kristopher Lindbloom Marina Nassar Hayden Schmittauer Erica Skiver Craig Sutphin Jerry Tipping Chad Tuschman There are still a great number of prospects considering joining the Club and I look forward to transitioning those into new members for another positive month of recruitment. Please feel free to call or email me if you would like me to connect with any of your friends, family, colleagues or neighbors with membership information. May is the perfect time to join and showcase our best events Kentucky Derby Party, Mother s Day Brunch and Memorial Day Weekend.

The Green Section It has been great seeing so many members take advantage of the early spring weather. The course has been in good shape for the early start to the season. Many of you have noticed all the changes from last season. While several areas are still a work in progress, like the fairway expansions, other areas including 18 green and the new tees are in excellent playing condition. Some spring projects that are currently under construction include 8 red tee, the removal of the cart path and right bunker on hole 14. The hill sides on 9 and 18 continue to get cleaned and over seeded, these areas will be a work in progress for some time. The newly constructed short game area is progressing very nicely with the spring weather. There have been many questions regarding use of this area. Please remember that it is very important to allow this area to complete grow-in stage so it will provide many years of use in the future. Most grow-ins take around 120 days of active growth to allow the surfaces to handle the traffic and stress put on them. Due to construction delays last season this area was not seeded till mid October, so we still have a little time until the facility will be open. For the month of May we have greens aerification scheduled on May 9 th. This is the only major maintenance practice scheduled. This spring we will be using solid tines instead of hollow tines. This practice is less invasive and playing conditions should be very good following the aerification. The reason we are not pulling cores is due to the fact that we have incorporated so much sand the last 10 years that at this time it is not necessary to pull cores twice a year. While our soil test shows a good balance of pore space and organic matter we will continue going forward with one traditional coring in the fall. The poa annua on the course has begun seeding. Once again, I have used a growth regulator to help control the seeding process. As many of you know the quality of the putting surface does suffer during this time period, unfortunately as good as the greens have been thus far they will lose some speed and roll for a time period. Through the use of growth regulators we will have a better playing surface and a healthier plant come summer. By limiting the number of seed inflorescences produced, the plants will save carbohydrates, which they will be able to use later for root development and energy as needed during stressful situations. This is a bit of a painful process but as an older course something we have to deal with. I would also like to take a minute to remind everyone to repair ball marks. The sooner they are repaired the faster they will heal. The staff spends a great deal of time every morning repairing ball marks, which is often too late.

Tennis Season is here! The courts are open for play starting May 1st. Tail practices begin this week. If you are interested in practice times, contact your captain or refer to the tennis website sylvaniacctennis.com for more info. All of our other adult programs begin this month with Play with the Pro on Friday mornings 9-10:30 a.m. and Cardio Tennis Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings at from 8-8:50 a.m. All players please register online if you plan on coming to a clinic or a team practice, this way the appropriate staff will be present. Saturday, May 14th will be our 1st Spring Training day. This event will be different types of play to knock the rust off those racquets. We ll have ball machine training, serving, drills run by the club staff, and point play for those wanting to get those competitive juices flowing. Tennis will be followed by a light brunch and short Q&A with USTA NWO League Coordinator, Amy Beaverson. Registration for this event will begin online at the tennis website and in the tennis office starting May 1st. Any further questions can be directed to club pro Ryan Baird, bairdrt333@yahoo.com Junior tennis registration is ongoing. Stop in the clubhouse, tennis office, or visit the tennis website for Junior clinic information. Clinics begin June 6th! We look forward to seeing you on the court.
