February 21, 2014 Burns Flat-Dill City Schools BF-DC Homecoming 2014 Homecoming week was a fun and eventful week. Throughout the week there was different dress up days. Monday was Pajama Day, there was no judging that day so nobody won. Tuesday was mix-up day. The Jr. High winners for Tuesday were Tamika Price and Jaron Mason. The High School winners for Tuesday were Rachel Chandler and Seth Nason. Wednesday was Disney Day. The sixth grade winner was Cameron Bond, the Jr. High winner was Taylor Garcia, and the High School winner was Kelsey Briggs. Thursday s dress up day was Red, White, and Blue Day. For sixth grade, the winner was Jordan Mason, for Jr. High the winner was Caitlin Johnson, and for High School the winner was Darian Hargis. The final day for dress up week, which was Friday, was Neon Day. The sixth grade winner was Davin Price, the Jr. High winner was Lorsa Hughes, and the High School winner was Kensey Garrison. Following the dress up days for Homecoming there was also Jr. High and High School Homecoming. For Jr. High the 7th grade candidates were Destiney Spradlin and Landon Ringo. The candidates for 8th grade were Jordan Weese and Jake Mooney. The Candidates for 9th grade were Katarina Cowley and Chris Clark. The Homecoming queen for Jr. High was Destiney Spradlin and the king was Jake Mooney. For High School Homecoming the 10th grade candidates were Tracie Diggs and Jacob Goeringer. The 11th grade candidates were Jordan Hughes and Daniel Battles. The 12th grade candidates were Brooke Battles and Jacey Newberry. February 21, 2014 Burns Flat-Dill City Schools Meet the Support Staff to work at BF-DC for the benefits and the summers off. Her hobbies are fishing, camping, and reading. Kathy Simmons attended college at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Oklahoma and received a degree in Social Work with a minor in Psychology. She has worked as a cook at Burns Flat-Dill City Schools for three years. She has three children who are married and have blessed her with five grandchildren. Mrs. Simmons lives north of Foss on a ranch. Her hobbies are fishing, horseback riding, reading, and enjoying being with friends and family. When asked about how she liked working at BF-DC Schools, she said I like it. Eddie Kay Christian is a resident of Dill City, Oklahoma. She is the high school s head cook and has worked at Burns Flat-Dill City Schools for six years. Before working at BF-DC she worked as a dental assistant for twelve years and as Group Manager at Alco for six years. She and her husband have 2 sons who are married and they have given them 5 wonderful grandchildren. Mrs. Christian chose Tammi Goodspeed is new to Burns Flat-Dill City Schools and works as a cook s helper and a janitor. She attended Frank Phillips College for two years and WTC for two semesters. She chose to work at Burns Flat because of the hours, the people she works with, and the students who are fun to be around. Before working at BF-DC schools she worked for the post office for 13 years and SWODA for 1 year. She and her husband live just south of Burns Flat. They have a son and a daughter, who are both married. Her hobbies include reading, crafting, and being outdoors. Vicki Jo Reeves is going on her twenty-sixth year of working at Burns Flat-Dill City s schools. She works as a PARA Professional. She does the billing for lunch and breakfast at the grade school, and works as an aide for 2nd grade. She worked in the Cooperative Learning Classroom for seven years and the library for thirteen years. Before working at BF-DC, she worked as an insurance secretary in San Antonio, Texas. She attended college at the San Antonio Community College for one year. Mrs. Reeves is married to Rick. They have a daughter, Misty, two sons, Ricky and John. They have four grandchildren; Jayden, Chesni, Briggs, and Brylie. In her spare time, Vicki likes to watch her grandkids play sports, read, watch movies, and spend time with her family in San Antonio. Gayla Linn works at Will Rogers Elementary as a library assistant and has worked for BF-DC Schools for fifteen years. Mrs. Linn chose to work at the school because she wanted to work somewhere where she would have the same days off as her children. Mrs. Linn attended college at Western Oklahoma State College. Before working at Burns Flat-Dill City Schools, she worked for the Department of Human Services and at Head Start in Dill City. Mrs. Linn resides in Dill City with her husband Jimmy. They have two sons, Ryan (and wife Sara) and Eric (and wife Chelsea) and one grandson, Brody. Her hobbies include taking care of her horses and reading. Volume 53, Number 8 Page 2 When asked what she thought of working at the schools she said I love the people I work with and I love my job. It is a nice quiet place to live and raise children. Just not much to do. Jason Uecke works as grounds maintenance and the transportation supervisor at Burns Flat-Dill City Schools. He attended Redlands Community College for two years, earning his associates degree in Animal Science. Mr. Uecke has worked at the schools for nine years. Before coming to work at the schools he worked at Security Metal Products in Clinton for two years and Davis Angus Farms East of Burns Flat for thirteen years. He lives south of Dill City on his farm with his wife Krystle and their children,6 year old Tanner and 3 year old Tate. He is the son of Beverly Uecke that works at the high school and the brother of Mrs. Selman that teaches at Will Rogers Elementary. His life centers on raising his children, cattle, and dogs with his wife. James Boone has worked for BF-DC Schools in maintenance for twelve years. Before living in Burns Flat, he resided in St. Joseph, Missouri. James Boone chose to work in Burns Flat because it was close to home. He is married to Kim Boone, who works at the high school. He has four children and two grandchildren. He really enjoys working with the school. Before Burns Flat, he worked in the oilfield in Clinton. His hobbies include building things, fishing, and camping. Kim Boone works as the child nutrition secretary. She has worked at Burns Flat for seventeen years as a custodian before moving to her new position this year. She lives in, and was raised in Burns Flat. Mrs. Boone is married to James Boone and has four children and two grandchildren. Before working at Burns Flat, She worked two years at Headstart in Dill City. She also spent two years working at the Chevrolet Dealership in Cordell. To pass time, Kim enjoys doing crafts. When asked about living in Burns Flat she said Taisha Beasterfeld is the teacher s aide for the Cooperative Learning Classroom (CO-OP) and has worked there for three years. Before working at Burns Flat-Dill City, she worked at Kinder Kastle Childcare in Clinton, OK for four years as the baby teacher. She attended Baker College in Flint, Michigan for three years to major in human services then went to SWOSU and earned a Child Development Associate Degree (CDA) in early childhood. Mrs. Beasterfeld's hobbies are watching movies and coaching soccer for her children and other local children in Burns Flat and Cordell. Mrs. Beasterfeld lives in Burns Flat with her husband Eric and their three children Kaitlyn, Shauney, and Kameryn. February 21, 2014 Burns Flat-Dill City Schools Volume 53, Number 8 Page 3 5th Grade Academic Team Attends First Meet Students to Perform The 5th grade academic team went to their first meet on Thursday, February 13th at Elk City. The team finished in 4th place, but improved with each round. They competed against teams from Weatherford and Elk City. The 5th grade team practices on Tuesday and Thursday during their lunch period. There are 11 students coming to practice. Points are given for questions they answer correctly and the top 8 got to go to the Elk City meet. Those attending the Elk City meet were Grace Schneberger, Jessica Briggs, Dalton Webb, Kamern Hall, Alexis Plaza, Melody Julian, Mia Tibbets, and Ryan Neely. The coaches are working with Canute 5th grade to see if they can come up with dates that the teams can get together and practice. The team will also be attending another meet at a later date. Ann McBee Academic Coach The Will Rogers Elementary Third and Fourth grade students will present a program on March 4th at 7:00 pm in the Will Rogers Gymnasium. The students have been preparing pieces on their recorders and patriotic vocal pieces to entertain parents, family, and friends. Please come support your child and celebrate the talents that he/ she is developing and enjoy a night of celebrating our freedoms! Valerie Fite Music Teacher 5th Graders Visit Altus Base The 5th grade class enjoyed a trip to the Altus Air Force Base this week. After completing the Starbase program they were able to visit a few places on the base. It was an awesome t r i p! T h e y e n - joyed participating in a series of activities which were all aligned with what they learned at Starbase. Students learned about computers, welding, electricity, reusable materials for water treatment system, how computers are used in medicine, a e r o n a u t i c s, a n d law enforcement. Students were also allowed to visit planes on the flight line. They were allowed to tour the planes as well as question pilots about their experiences. One of the highlights of the tour was visiting the cockpit and sitting in the pilot s chair. Several of the students expressed interest learning the process involved in getting a pilot s license. Some expressed an interest in joining the Air Force. The overall program and experience was beneficial to students and had a positive outcome. The students have a better understanding how science and math are involved in all aspects of their lives. It was a big eye opener for students to see how much math and science is needed in the military. This experience will allow students to think about their future and if they are willing to work hard they will be able to achieve their goals. Ann McBee 5 th Grade Teacher BF-DC School Libraries Extended Hours 5th Graders Learn About Perpetrators The Will Rogers 5 th graders had a lesson this week about perpetrators and human trafficking. They discussed the dangers of human trafficking in Oklahoma. The crossing of Interstate 40 and Interstate 35 in Oklahoma City makes Oklahoma a cross road for transporting victims of trafficking. The high risk age of victims are ages 12 to 19 so it is important that stu- dents know how to stay safe in the world and on the internet. They talked about ways to stay safe on social media and how to stay safe physically. The class discussed that creepers can be savvy and they have to be smarter. Young people are forced into labor and prostitution all over the world and everyone needs to speak out and let people know that it is time to end it! Wednesday: Theme day. Thursday: Blue & Gold pride. Friday: FFA shirt & jeans (cookout). Each year, FFA chapters around the country celebrate National FFA week. The week long tradition began in 1947 when the National FFA Board of Directors designated the week of George Washington s birthday as National FFA Week in recognition of his legacy as an agriculturist and farmer. The first National FFA Week was held in 1948. Today, FFA Week always runs Saturday to Saturday and encompasses Feb. 22, Washington s birthday. The FFA chapter makes a positive difference in the lives of their members by igniting the potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. Cheyenne McDaniel Counselor Corner Students interested in Cadet Lawman need to pick up an application from Ms. Smith. The Applications are due March 1st. April 12th - Is the last ACT test for this school year. Students must be registered by March 7th. Juniors need to take this test. March 3rd - All high school enrollment to WTC is due. 13th Year due for returning students. March 11th - 12th - Eighth grade students visit WTC. March 13th - 14th - Parent/Teacher Conference 4:00-7:00 pm on Thursday and 8:00-11:00 am on Friday. March 25th 26th - Orientation for new students at WTC. March 27th - Blood Drive 8:00-2:00. Junior News The juniors chose a Snicker cake for the dessert for prom. The junior class tested the cake at the last junior class meeting. The cake was made by Kim Boone and all of the juniors agreed that it was the one. The juniors can start working on prom decorations after school. Academic Team News The High School and Junior High Academic Team had a fun evening on February 17th attending the Oklahoma Great Plains Academic Conference Awards Banquet. Brandon Stewart was awarded High School MVP. Ryne Garrison was awarded Junior High team MVP, Junior High OGPAC All Star Player. The Junior High Team was Co-Runner- Up and was given an award. Burns Flat-Dill City Schools had a good turn out with 18 students and adults attending. Mrs. Roskam, Mr. Roberts, and Mrs. Wright are very proud of the BF-DC s A c a d e m i c Teams. Mrs. Wright said They (the Academic Teams) are a great group of students. Allison Walker FCA News There was a FCA meeting on February 18 th during encore. Members of FCA must give $12.00 to Mrs. Lyles as soon as possible if they will be attending the Red Hawks game on May 10. Student Council News Homecoming week was a very busy week at BF-DC. A l o n g w i t h t w o Homecoming Coronations, Stu-Co had two fundraisers and the Homecoming Dance. However, as busy as it was, it was an AWESOME week with a lot of laughs, smiles and good times. Stu-Co wants to say thank you to everyone who supported them in their fundraisers. Stu-Co received many compliments on how good the food was at the luncheon on Monday, special thanks to Mrs. Ledbetter. For the t- shirt sale fund-raiser, Stu- Co ordered 100 Homecoming shirts and sold 99. AWESOME!! FCCLA News The BF-DC FCCLA have gotten all of their recipes together and are now working on getting each recipe proof read so that it can be submitted and printed. The cookbooks will be sold for $10.00 each. The members of the Burns Flat-Dill City FCCLA are also getting ready for the state convention that will be held in Oklahoma City on April 3-4th. February 21, 2014 Burns Flat-Dill City Schools Volume 53, Number 8 Page 6 Cheerleaders Have a Busy Week The Burns-Flat Dill City cheerleaders had a very busy week February 10th through the 14th. In between Spirit Week, junior high Homecoming, high school homecoming, homecoming pep rally, and games almost every day of the week, they have barely had a chance to breath. The game on Thursday was also the day for the high school Homecoming and the cheerleaders took their long walk down the aisles of the stands, waiting anxiously at the bottom for the gorgeous candidates to take their escorts arms. The ceremony was beautiful and HS Boys HS Girls The BF-DC High school boys team played Carnegie on February 3rd and lost the game 27-63. Morgan Mouser was the leading scorer with 10 points. Tanner Renken scored 7 points. The boys played against Snyder on February 7th and lost 3555. Tanner Renken scored 15 points and Jacey Newberry was scored 10 points. The High school Boys team played against Cheyenne on February 11th and even though they are improving they lost 38-58. Jacey Newberry scored 24 points and Morgan Mouser scored 6 points. The boys played against Merritt on February the 13th and lost 29-76. Tanner Renken was the leading scorer with 11 points. Morgan Mouser and Tony Dorman each scored 6 points. The boys have had a rough season but have improved with each game they have played. The high school girls basketball team played against Carnegie on February 4th and even with the girls playing their hardest they lost 23-58. Later that week, on the 7th of February, they played against Snyder and after playing hard all 4 quarters they lost 27-42. At the beginning of Valentine s week, the high school girls team played against Cheyenne and 3155. The girls played against Merritt on the 13th and lost the game 21-39. The girls are really starting to play together as a team and are showing improvement each time they play. Several of the girls said they were looking forward to their district games. Trayon Hill was the leading scorer with 27 points and Joel Marez scored 7 points. The boys played against Hobart on February 13th and lost a very hard fought game 4351.
