The Osage is Back! Great news! Last hunt season Flint Oak was unable to utilize the Osage European Shoot due to a wild fire that came across the west side of Flint Oak. It is back! The Preserve Department has worked continually this past season to get it into shape. New blinds have been build, trees and grasses have been planted to add cover and many other improvements were made to make it ready for Hunt Season 2017-2018. The Osage is Flint Oak s newest European and has ten blinds. It can accommodate up to twenty shooters and is a new favorite to our members who have more guests than the Mecca can hold. Duck Hunts - A Great Way to Start the Day Flint Oak believes there is nothing better than a breakfast burrito in the blind. Leave your orange hats and vest in the room, and put your lucky camo on because it s time to go on a Duck Hunt. Our duck hunts are a great way to kick off a busy day of hunting at Flint Oak. Perfect for the experienced hunter or first time hunters and youth. Members and their fellow hunters are picked up first thing in the morning by a guide to take you to one of our four in-ground blinds. Climb down in the blind, get your guns loaded up, shells laid out, a hot cup of coffee in hand and watch your guide call those Mallards down. Pick out a Greenhead and watch the feathers fly then watch your favorite Flint Oak retrievers put on a show, retrieving those long shot downed birds for you. Once your limit is filled and the coffee is gone your guide will get you back to the Lodge to put your orange on and brag to the other hunters how many shells you ve already shot while they were all sleeping. Rain, snow or sunshine our staff is ready to give you a Duck hunt that you will talk about until you make it back the next time. Be sure and bring lots of your friends to introduce them to the great event that is a Flint Oak Duck Hunt. Call and make your reservations today with the Flint Oak office while there are still hunts available. 3 INSIDE THIS ISSUE Private European Results 2 Duck Hunting 3 Newest Offerings 4 Chef Phil Burrus 5 Let's Make Memories 5 Flint Oak's Fine Dining 6 Corporate Meetings 7 European Pheasant Shoots 8 Deer Season 10 Super Quail Hunts 10 Fishing Update 10 Calendar of Events 11 Kansas Salutes the Troops 14 Hunter Safety 15 Summer Thank You 2017 15 The Last & Biggest European 17 An Intern's Birdseye View 17 Gator Hunts 18 Sporting Clay Events 18 Flint Oak Dog Report 19 Flint Oak Field Hunt 19 Memberships 20 Membership Bylaws 21 2017/2018 European Dates 22 Important Reminders 23

Newest Offerings for our Members The Owners and Staff of Flint Oak are very excited to announce the newest addition to Flint Oak s Lodging selection. Opening date is November 12th.ish. The addition is our new seven bedroom Lodge sitting straight south of the Main Lodge where the Conference Level home and rooms once stood. On September 15th, 2016 lighting struck the Conference Level and the resulting fire totaled the entire structure. On June 12th, 2017 Ryan Carter Contracting hit the ground with a big crew and a semi load of lumber. Within thirty working days he and his hard working carpenters had the Lodge dried-in, windows installed, siding going on and painters working on the fascia and soffits. The daily progress that was made by Ryan Carter Contracting was fun and exciting to watch. The new seven room Lodge is elegantly appointed with very large rooms, king size beds, televisions, kitchenettes, large bathrooms and large showers. The rooms that face the East have beautiful views of Lodge Lake, and all rooms have outside porches to sit and relax after a day on the field. When it s time for libations, meals or shopping, you are only steps away from the outdoor fire pit, The Last Shot, and the Main Lodge. Look for additional updates and pictures of our progress throughout the late summer and fall on our Facebook page and E-Blast. We asked our Members to send in their favorite Outdoor/Hunting inspired name for the new lodge. Thank you for everyone who took the time to submit their ideas. The winning name and winner will be announced in an upcoming eblast. The winner will receive two free hunts to be used this season on an Open European. We look forward to seeing you this Hunt Season in the field, as well as showing you our hard work from the summer. Fredonia Airport Improvements The Fredonia Airport is widening the runway. They will begin construction August 1st, at this time Flint Oak is unsure of when it will be completed. It is going to be wider by fifteen feet. This will make the runway then be 4600 feet by 60 feet of lighted concrete. Be sure and take advantage of the larger area when coming to Flint Oak. Have Fuel, Will Travel For all those who have made the trip to Flint Oak and suddenly realized you were out of fuel - no worries, the town of Fall River has a new card operated gas station. This past summer MJ Murphy installed a pump which includes gas, highway diesel and farm diesel. So even though you might want to use the excuse that you can t leave Flint Oak because you are out of gas, it won t work anymore. 4 Above picture is of a new equipment barn that was built over the summer to help keep our ever growing fleet out of the weather. visit us online at flintoak.com

Flint Oak also has first-class, fully stocked New Liquor Rules Over the summer during an Insurance inspection and review of our practices the subject of Members bringing liquor onto Flint Oak property came up. After discussing with our Underwriter that some Members brought liquor along with them, they asked how we controlled someone consuming alcohol and then shooting a firearm. We finally had to concede that we could not control a person s action if we were not in full charge of it. With that said we signed an agreement with them on July 10th that we would no longer allow any Pro Shop with a wide variety of items. Flint Oak s Private and Open Driven Pheasant Shoots The driven pheasant shoot, reserved for Europe s royalty and aristocracy until the mid- 20th Century, has a long and rich history. The shoot begins with the Horns men. The hunting horns blow notifying the shooters to begin and the beaters, traditionally servants walking through the woods driving the game ahead of them, start pushing the birds towards the shooters. When the birds approach the clearing at the edge of the forest they flush high and fly very, very fast towards the waiting guns providing missile like targets. Traditionally, midway through the hunt, servants brought their masters food and drink and a feast at the castle followed the hunt. Flint Oak s European shoots, in the tradition of those reserved for the kings so long ago, begins with the hunting horns. Flint Oak s rich and diverse background provides a truly exciting pheasant shooting for both the novice and the experienced gun. As the hunters horns sound across the landscape, prepare for the most exhilarating pheasant shoot of your life. True to tradition, food and drink are provided halfway through the hunt, a welcome respite to the shooting. The hunters lunch served at the lodge, rounds out the day. Start planning today for a truly exciting pheasant shooting in Flint Oak s magnificent surroundings. Feel like a king; come to Flint Oak where you are royalty. Flint Oak not only offers a variety of Private European Hunt choices, Flint Oak s Open European Shoot, our Grand Event, is held virtually throughout the Hunt Season (see schedule page 22). The pageantry of this event, the mix of participants, the weather and a myriad of other factors, make each and every shoot unique. The Open European Held on Saturday mornings, this is the granddaddy of our Europeans. It includes a wonderful buffet breakfast, a coffee break around a toasty campfire, a hearty lunch and an equal share of the day s harvest. The European has 39 blinds that surround the hill. Driven to flight, the pheasants fly towards the shooters. Flint Oak s retrievers pick up the harvested pheasants even as you shoot. As each brace completes, you move to a new blind that offers new and different shooting challenges, then the fun starts all over. Shooting the European with a special friend or family member makes memories to last a lifetime. The Open European, scheduled regularly throughout hunt season, is an open shoot; you can book reservations from one to seventyeight shooters! At the Open Europeans, we serve a variety of buffet lunches to finish off your fantastic European style driven shoot. The Mini-European The Mini, the first private European shoot introduced at Flint Oak, has proven to be very exciting and even sportier than we first anticipated. A twelve blind shoot, it accommodates up to twenty-four shooters. The birds are on the shooters QUICK on the west side (blinds 7 through 12), the forest side. The shooters need to help each other by yelling information to one another. The birds darting through tree openings verify the importance of staying alert at all times. Instinctive snap shooting ability is a real plus. Most of the bag comes from pass shots behind the blinds. Blinds 1 and 6 transition from the forest to the prairie side (blinds 2 through 5). Circling and turning birds provide some long lead shots with the 8 birds in full view and really moving fast! The birds reach such speed that very few birds harvested end up in front of the blind on the prairie side. The Mecca Webster defines the Mecca as a center of activity sought as a goal by people sharing a common interest. We at Flint Oak certainly hope that is true with our Mecca. Nestled in the upper end of a long brushy draw, sitting among some very large oaks and blackjacks with cedars and oaks in the center, this shoot produces some extremely challenging shots. It also sets astride a creek forking into a bigger creek. The area is a very pretty site. As you move around this shoot from timber to clearings, the variety of shooting opportunities will amaze you. This shoot, unlike some Europeans, is very versatile enabling groups of eight to sixteen shooters to

Advantages of the European Hunt European shoots are a great way to introduce your friends or business clients to Flint Oak. They are designed for Private groups of all sizes. This type of shoot is ideal for those not able to Field Hunt. When you factor in the unpredictability of Kansas weather, even the most experienced shooter will be challenged, while the novice will have an enjoyable experience hunting with friends. The camaraderie and atmosphere of these shoots is a great tool for team building. With all this in mind, why not schedule your European Shoot soon? To increase the fun and add more shooting pleasure, extra birds may be purchased for each of these shoots except the Open European. use the shoot. With up to sixteen guns, extra birds will be a blast. The Osage The Osage, Flint Oak s newest private European, and 6th European site debuted October 16, 2012. Located on the northwest corner of Flint Oak, it lays on a beautiful piece of acreage, with one side heavily populated with trees and overlooking a pond to the west. We named this European after the Osage Indian tribe that camped on Indian Creek, located to the north. The Osage features ten blinds which allows a group of up to twenty to experience this great thrill. The Phoenix The Phoenix was a mythical bird that arose from the smoke and ashes of its own destruction! Thus, we thought it was an appropriate name for this driven shoot because those birds just seem to keep rising and flying despite smoking shotguns! The Phoenix, located on the westerly portion of Flint Oak, accommodates eighteen to thirty- six shooters. More trees and completely different terrain than any of our other Europeans make for a unique shooting experience. The Scottie / Double Scottie Ideal for six to eight shooters, the Scottie lies toward the east and allows smaller groups to enjoy European style shooting. -Or, the Double Scottie differs in the fact that the shooters rotate around the circle twice, giving more shooting opportunity and a second chance at mastering the nuances of each shooting position. A coffee break 9 after the completion of the first rotation enables the shooters to cuss and discuss the blinds and formulate new strategies prior to the second round. Flint Oak continues to offer a three day six hunt package with two nights lodging included. We look forward to returning hunters and some coming this year for the first time. We have local meat processors and taxidermists available if needed. Please look ahead to book possible hunting dates as mid- November rut hunts fill quickly. Flint Oak will offer free Antlerless youth hunts during the extended season in January. As always, hunters will need a tag from the state drawing for those coming out-of-state, along with a current hunting license. Several mature bucks that were not harvested last year have begun to show up on our trail cams and although the racks have not completely filled out yet, it is exciting to get another chance to take a trophy in the Flint Hills of Southeast Kansas. Super Quail Hunts Those who enjoy the thrill of an exploding covey of quail and the confusion of which bird to shoot at will want to partake in Flint Oak s Super Quail Hunts. As we start our eighth year they are becoming one of our more popular hunts. Whether it s the dozen or so coveys found or watching the dogs working a retrieve in a setting reminiscent of Fishing Update Flint Oak has been working to improve all fishing lakes this past year. Last fall Indian Lake, West Lake and Center Lake were all shocked. This is done periodically to study the health of the fish and the quantity of fish. Due to results from shocking we decided to do the following: Center Lake was stocked with Wipers. At Indian Lake Flint Oak will be drawing down the water in late fall to create plant forage so that the fish fry will have a better chance of survival and create a secondary food source in the Spring. Tilapia was added into Indian Lake, about 300 pounds worth. Tilapia is an exotic fish that has been Western Kansas, memories of days gone by hunting with family and friends abound. Small gauge enthusiasts enjoy the challenge of these feathered flurries. Not to mention, quail for table fare is a tasty treat. Furthermore, those who used extensively in aquaculture around the world for many years. In recent years fish managers have used them as a forage supplement and for algae control. Tilapia can get up to several pounds and occasionally be caught on a hook. Both West Lake and Indian Lake have benefited from our annual stocking of Wipers. 10 prefer open terrain with rolling hills and waist deep native grasses will get a thrill on a Super Quail Hunt at The West Ranch. Flint Oak can accommodate only a limited number of Super Quail hunts per day, so make plans early to create memories that will be relived around the fire pit when the day is done. Hybrid sun fish were also introduced to West Lake. They can grow up to nearly two pounds and will provide a great experience for anglers wanting to catch large pan fish. Additionally we have upgraded to a larger more comfortable 16 foot bass boat vs the two man water scamp used in prior years. We are planning on stocking flathead minnows in all three lakes sometime in early fall. This will all ensure a great fishing season next year, so plan on spending some time at Flint Oak.

8th Annual Flint Oak Kansas Salutes the Troops By Michael Pearce Walter Reed Army Medical Center helps America s military men and women heal. So does Flint Oak. World-class doctors, using state-ofthe-art technology, bring success at the renowned military hospital. At Flint Oak the healing comes from the simple elixirs of quality time outdoors, great meals and camaraderie, all served by volunteers, sponsors and staff wanting to express their heart-felt appreciation and support. October 13-15 Flint Oak will host the 8th-annual Kansas Salutes the Troops event, one of our most cherished events. Through the years the exclusive weekend has annually hosted up to 30 or more soldiers from all military branches and ranks and corners of our country. They ve included double amputees, post- traumatic stress disorder victims and veterans with a variety of other challenges. All have been invited at the suggestion of a military superior who feels the man or woman could be helped by a therapeutic weekend that s all about them. During their stay many troops say they ve experienced the best food of their lives. As well as sporting clays they shoot more rounds at Flint Oak pheasants than most avid bird hunters will in an entire season. Thanks to more than 50 sponsors, ranging from Cabela s, Coleman, and Pepsi to simple, hard-working civilians, most soldiers head home with prizes ranging from new hunting clothing to allinclusive guided hunts in other states. More importantly, the soldiers get a chance to relax, meet new people and be accepted by dozens of other soldiers and civilian sponsors. This is the coolest thing I ve ever done in my life, spending time with these guys, said Mike Hall, a wounded veteran who attended two of the hunts. (The sponsors) are just treating us like guys. We re out here and we get to laughing, joking and ribbing each other. You know, you can throw money all you want at some things, but what really helps guys like these is giving them some of your time. Seriously, 14 most people have no idea how much that s appreciated by these veterans. It means more to them than anything, honestly. That s what really puts them at ease. And that feeling of ease and acceptance is usually very evident by the last meal on Saturday evening. Listening to the soldiers express heartfelt appreciation, and often talking of their challenges, can never be forgotten. Many have said attending the event has literally changed their life. Scores of new friendships have been formed. It s for those reasons the Kansas S a l u t e s the Troops program at Flint Oak has a nearly 100-percent repeat rate amid attending sponsors and volunteers. This summer as an intern from Kansas State University I had the opportunity to witness firsthand what it takes to keep Flint Oak s shooting department up and running. In order to make sure the sporting clays course is available to our guests at all times; routine battery checks, thrower maintenance and station cleaning is important. Regular lawn care is necessary to keep the course looking Shooting to Improve Are you tired of seeing other hunt wagons come back with a lot more birds than yours? Or even tired of being that guy in the group that is bringing in the low score on the Sporting Clays Course? If you are, we have the solution to your problem. Here at Flint Oak we offer one on one shooting lessons or group lessons with our exceptional and experienced staff. We will take the time to get to know you and find out your shooting background. From there we will discuss what your ultimate goal is, whether it is to start from By Breck Winter great. Maintenance and lawn care at five stand and the skeet field are also a part of the daily tasks. Spring Sporting Clay League, NSCA registered shoots, and Tacos and Targets are sometimes added to the daily responsibilities. The league competition consists of setting a new and challenging group of targets each week. Designing and setting courses for NSCA shoots along with pulling for shooters was some of the more exciting work. Every third Sunday we get ready for the ground up or maybe you just need some extra practice on killing those flushed pheasants or fast flying quail. We offer lessons on our one of a kind sporting clays course 17 Tacos and Targets. Setting a few new stations and topping off throwers with targets to get ready for the crowd is all part of the fun. Over all it was a learning experience I am glad to be a part of. Long days, hard work, and attention to detail is what keeps the shooting sports at Flint Oak running so smoothly. which will show you multiple target presentations, the smaller compact 5 - S t a n d that has six different target presentations or our simple skeet and trap field. Let us help you come back with higher scores and more birds on those hunt wagons!

Gator Hunts 2017 Getting an old buddy or family member out of the house and into the field can sometimes be a task in itself. As we all get older it s sometimes not as easy to walk the miles we did with ease when younger and filled with superman strength. Additionally, a Gator is another avenue for a person with disabilities or an observer or two to enjoy our wing shooting sport. Using a Flint Oak Gator is a great alternative to still enjoy the camaraderie and hunt shared as in times past without the physical exertion over rocky terrain. To recap the process; a Flint Oak Guide will be waiting for you in the field with your Gator, they will load your guns, gear, and with up to three hunters begin the hunt riding in comfort. When the dogs establish a steady point, hunters will get out, load their shotguns, and get into position to take part in the action. Provided on the hunt includes water, coffee, soda, and something sweet to eat. Sporting Clays Events, Summer 2017 With the summer months coming to a close we had a whirlwind of events. We started out with our spring sporting clays league. During league we had 33 shooters coming out for six weeks to enjoy a Sporting Clays course setup differently each week on the preserve. The winning team this year was Bruce, Jacob, and Jason Dick. During the weeks of league we had our first registered shoot of the year, the Flint Oak/Claythorne 400. Originally it was set to be a 300 bird shoot, but because of the interest of the shoot we bumped Sporting Clay Rental Carts Are you tired after a long morning in the field? Maybe you re having a rough morning because The Last Shot got the better of you, but you still want to go shoot some sporting clays. Well we have something to get you fired up! Flint Oak has flaming hot golf carts ready for you to use to help you get around and go break some clays. it to a 400 bird. The shoot brought in 104 shooters and the top score was a 375 shot by Rick Mein. After the first shoot we brought in a lot of great charities come in and experience the Sporting Clays course and wonderful food in the restaurant. We had WSU, YMCA, Bust-a-Clay for Kids sake, and the Shriners. Each group brought something special for their guests to enjoy. One group brought in a Judge handgun to shoot at incoming targets and another tried to shoot golf balls being chipped from his or her partner. From there we had the Kansas State Wildlife Outdoor Enterprise Program come out and spend some time with us. The first visit they came The carts come equipped with drink holders, gun racks and a sweet flaming hot Flint Oak logo. When you call into the office be sure to sign up for a cart because they go fast and we want to keep you ready to go on Flint Oak s 5-Star Sporting clays course. 18 on, they learned all about the sporting clays and 5-stand. Brent Fleming with GP Traps came in and explained how his machines worked and the different kinds of targets that are shot. He and Scott Williams shared with the kids what all it took to not only run a sporting clays course, but how to run events correctly. On their second trip back out here they learned all about skeet and trap. Jared Greenwood with Greenwood Stocks came and helped teach the kids the importance of a proper fitting gun. Once we made it to the Oakley Cup it was all downhill from there, except for Jeff Oakes who went over the hill. During the Oakley Cup we had a celebration of Jeff and Brenda s birthday. The shooters got to enjoy a night of fun and live music from Bryan Knowles. All shooters that attended were able to shoot either small gauge set on our home course, the 200 bird Oakley Cup set on the preserve, or the K-State C up and Lois Neely Cup also set out on the preserve. The high overall winner was Mickey Lyn Roberts with a score of 195 on the Oakley Cup.

Dog Report from Flint Oak Hunt season is fast approaching and Steve, Dog Department Manager, has started the conditioning program needed to get all of Flint Oak s dogs into hunting shape. This includes a roading program to get the extra summer pounds off so they are all ready to go. The improved breeding program at Flint Oak continues. This past summer Carly, a Brittany, had a litter of pups as well as Sadie, a German Shorthair, all of which will be trained as they get older to be used in Flint Oak s Upland Hunts. Then we have Cocoa, a German Shorthair, who is currently bred and expecting a litter of puppies late September. This upcoming Hunt Season will see a new influx of well-trained English Pointers, the latest trainees from the Flint Oak kennel staff. As you enjoy a great hunt at Flint Oak, you will also have a great experience watching our dogs work as they point and retrieve birds during your hunt. Flint Oak Boards & Trains Dogs Year Around Experience a Flint Oak Field Hunt The dogs are ready to go, as the guide heads up the road to pick up the Members and their guests who are excited to experience their first field hunt of the season at Flint Oak. On the way to the field, the guides give the safety talk, letting the hunters know that to have a great hunt everyone must be safe. With the truck parked and the guides readying the dogs, the hunters hear pheasants cackling and just know it s going to be a great hunt. As the group enters the fields, watching the great dog work, the first point of the day gets everyone s blood pumping. Throughout the three-hour hunt, the dogs point numerous pheasant, quail and Chukar, and all hunters make memories to last a lifetime. While walking the group experiences some of the best hunting terrain in the country along with many great views of Flint Oak. Halfway through the hunt, the guide gets two fresh dogs and the hunters a short break and give each other trouble about missed shots. With the hunt over the guide drops the Members and their guests off at the Lodge where the kitchen staff is ready to serve them a great meal. By the time lunch is finished the hunt s harvest is cleaned and ready for pick up. Hunt season at Flint Oak is great, so book a hunt for this fall and come prepared to experience the best upland hunting of your life. Good... definitely, Old Fashioned not at Flint Oak Flint Oak brought back the fun 19 and non-stop action and shooting when we introduced the Super Quail Hunt. The Super Quail Hunt averages between twelve to fourteen coveys of quail, affords constant action and definitely ups the fun factor. Watching the dogs hunt down singles and retrieve is, for some, the best part of the hunt. This style of hunt has become a Member/guest favorite. Remember that when you book a field hunt, you now have the option of a Super Quail Hunt or our traditional Field Hunt (quail, pheasant and Chukar). We can only accommodate a limited number daily so be sure and book your hunts early for lots of action, fantastic dog work and magic moments that will last a lifetime.
