Dear Parents, Students, and Patrons: It seems as if just yesterday it was August of 2014 and I was preparing to send out the very first CMS Newsletter, yet here we are 9 months and 5 issues later! Definitely, time does fly! It s been an extremely busy school year at Carlisle Middle School and many positive occurrences and changes have taken place during the past 9 months; whether it was the Commons Make-over Project, changing next year s schedule from 9 to 7 periods, or showcasing student work all over the building, it s the sincere belief of the entire CMS staff that this school is more student centered than it was before school started. This final newsletter only captures a snapshot of what s happened within our walls since the February issue, but for sure our students have succeeded and done many wonderful things in that time span whether it was the National History Team (page 13) advancing to Nationals in Washington, D.C., to the honors our HyperStream Club took home during the Prometheus Awards Night Banquet (page 10) it s a fact that CMS students have done many awesome things this year. HyperStream Honored At Statewide Event! HyperStream and Prometheus Awards Night Recently, Carlisle Middle School s own Hyperstream Club was honored at the 10th Annual Prometheus Awards presented by the Technology Association of Iowa. This event is similar to the Oscars but for technology companies in Iowa and includes awards like CEO of the Year, Small Tech Company of the Year, Large Tech Company of the Year, Best New App, and several other categories. Our Hyperstream Club was given a special award and special recognition halfway through the awards ceremony. The event honored us as the Star Hyperstream club in Iowa (only one recognized!) due to our growth, hard work, our focus on trying to include diversity, and our strong partnership with Telligen, our mentoring business. Emily Baker, Derek Nissen, Makayla Polka, and Alex Reed helped accept this recognition by giving short speeches in front of over 800 technology professionals. The night was a great experience for the students where we not only enjoyed our fame and recognition for the night, but also enjoyed getting dressed up, walking the red carpet, and taking part in photo shoots, and eating a 4-course meal all while watching some of the coolest technology companies in the state be recognized and receive awards. Nights like this in just our 3rd year of Hyperstream would not be possible without the support of the Technology Association of Iowa, Hyperstream, Telligen, and the hard work of our teacher mentors and especially, the students. We are excited to finish the year strong and hope to take a field trip to see what our partnering business, Telligen, actually looks like and how it operates. We will be sad to see some of our 8th graders leave our middle school program, but we are excited for the incoming 6th graders and their opportunity to join our club and help our program get stronger again next year. Our Hyperstream Club has over 25 members this year with members from all 3 grade levels at the Middle School. We meet twice monthly with other work sometimes going on between meetings. Julie Thompson and Ben Barry are the teacher mentors and are helped by 2-3 mentors from Telligen who attend all club meetings and work alongside the students as they work with technology. We competed in the Middle School Virtual Competition for the 2nd year this year as well. Knowledge Bowl Congrats to the 8th grade Knowledge Bowl Team that made it to the finals where they eventually finished in 2nd place! The squad consisted of team members William Voboril, Josh Lawless, Truman Kruse, Alex Reed, and Nate Rowray. The team also did very well and team members were Jacob Foster, Alexandra Mavin, Lucas Kozak, and Errond Powell. Submitted by Mrs. Connor Holocaust Survivor Speaks to CMS Students On February 23, the 8th graders as well as some high school students had the opportunity to listen to a Holocaust survivor. Marion Blumenthal Lazan shared her first-hand account of her family s life in Germany from the events preceding Kristallnacht to imprisonment in concentration camps to liberation in April 1945. Her message involved being tolerant of others and not stereotyping individuals. She stressed the importance of positive thinking as well as creativity and innerstrength to overcome adversity. Mrs. Lazan encouraged students to be true to themselves. I will always remember what she said about hope. Hope. This is the one thing we need to concentrate on. Madison Spieker It all changed my thinking by making me realize how some people have lived their life in such horrible situations but are able to find the light at the end of the tunnel. - Megan Merino I felt as if Marion s hope rubbed off on all of us so we might remember that moment in times of despair. -Krisjan Henderson Marion brought up that we were the last generation to listen to a Holocaust survivor. It was pretty memorable to me. -Josie Nordhagen Her message to us was to bear witness and prevent genocides and prejudice, a lesson that everyone needs to hear. -Sydney Uhlman The part I remember the clearest is her saying not to judge a whole group by one person s actions. Madison Fees This assembly and message tied directly into the 8th grade literacy curriculum. Students studied various Holocaust texts and presented on how characters found light in the darkness. Mrs. Lazan was an example of how someone can truly find light in the darkness. Submitted by Ms. Grieme 12 13
National History Day Rocks In Competition! Congratulations to the following students for all the hard work each and every one of them put into their National History Day project! Alyssa Brown, Adrian Carmenate, Kenzie Frost, Nate Guffey, Emilee Hintz, Nicole Hintz, Truman Kruse, Maisie Laughlin, Joshua Lawless, Carter Logue, Lexi Mavin, Cameron Mesecher, Jack Miller, Hunter Oppedal, Alex Reed, Nate Rowray, Christopher Stoever, Troy Sunnes, Sydney Uhlman, William Voboril, & Ava Zaugg All the students competed at the Regional NHD competition on April 11 at Grandview University. Two groups were selected to move on to State competition on May 4: Alyssa Brown, Nicole Hintz and Sydney Uhlman with their performance: One Man, One Vote: The Leadership and Legacy of Freedom Summer and Nate Rowray, Truman Kruse, Joshua Lawless, Hunter Oppedal with their performance: New York Newsboy Strike of 1899: Voices That Echo for Generations to Come. The 8th grade girls team has now advanced to Nationals which takes place in Washington, D.C., after school ends! Good luck to this squad! We are proud and impressed by all of the students dedication to National History Day! Students Excel At All-Iowa Middle School Debate Tournament Congrats to Alyssa Brown and Jacob Wolfgeher who recently competed at the All-Iowa Middle School Debate Tournament! Alyssa ranked 5th in State and Jacob was 57/80! Alyssa was only one in the entire tournament to rank a 1 in all of her debates! Submitted by Mrs. Connor 14 15
