CELEBRATING 16 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Upstate SC Chapter - American Singles Golf Association October 2008 Next Chapter Meeting October 6, 2008 The next Chapter meeting is scheduled for October 6, 2008. We will meet at Logan s Roadhouse in the meeting room with social hour from 6:30-7:30 PM and meeting to follow. Logan s is located at 53 Beacon Drive off Pelham Road in Greenville. Please contact Gwen Davis (864) 409-1187 or John Ferrell (864) 286-0189 for additional details. Village Greens Inman, SC September 13, 2008 The Upstate Chapter held its September golf outing at Village Greens Golf Course in Grambling, SC on September 13, 2008. A total of 15 golfers participated in the event including 12 Upstate members and three guests from the Asheville Chapter. We very much appreciated Andy Anderson, Kathy Alonzo, and Martha Kelly motoring down from the Asheville/ Hendersonville area and playing with us. Format for the outing was Captain s Choice. Prize money was divided equally between the teams who scored the best on the front nine and back nine. Three teams actually tied on the front nine with even par scores of 36, and the winning team was decided by a scorecard playoff, i.e. the team that scored the lowest on the most difficult hole. The winning team on the front nine consisted of Bobby Gossett, Connie Glover, Garry Wagner, and Maria Han. Outright winning team on the back nine consisted of: Martha Kelly (Asheville), Lesley Chandler, Cathy Nall and John Ferrell, with a two under par total score of 34. But, the highlight of the day was Darlene Lancaster s hole-in-one on the par 3 #11 hole. Darlene is the first member ever of the Upstate Chapter to score a hole-in-one in a chapter sponsored outing. Congratulations Darlene! A well deserved honor, and may you CONGRATULATIONS DARLENE have many, many more. After the golf outing, eight people stayed and had dinner in the new dining room of the new clubhouse at Village Greens. The owners of the course are to be congratulated on the exquisite new clubhouse. I ll have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of detail and craftsmanship put into the construction of the facilities; they are simply marvelous. ~John Ferrell, President SANTEE WEEKEND 2008 Upstate Chapter ASGA Members & Friends, Santee SC Golf Outing. August 29, 30, 31, 2008 MEMORIES ~John Ferrell, President The Upstate ASGA Chapter sponsored a three day golf and social outing at Santee, S.C. during the 2008 Labor Day weekend. There were a total of 26 people who registered, but one came down with an infectious disease the day before the tournament and had to withdraw, leaving 25 people to meet, greet, socialize, dance and play golf together. All of the people who attended said they had a great time, except maybe one, and were quite sur- NEXT BIG NATIONAL EVENT: New Year s in Orlando **** Stay at 4-Star Omni Orlando Resort at ChampionsGate Info at www.singlesgolf.com/newyears Other Multi-Chapter Events: SinglesGolf.com/events National Website: www.singlesgolf.com E-Mail: ASGANational@aol.com New Office Hours: 8:00am to 4:00pm, M-F (Eastern) National Office: 704-889-4600 or 1-888-GOLFMATE To join ASGA or renew your dues, contact the National Office at above number or go to www.singlesgolf.com/join Regular Meeting Date: First Monday of each month Next Meeting: October 6th, 2008 Meeting Location: Logan s Roadhouse at 6:30 pm Our Website: www.singlesgolf.com Our Hotline: TBD (See next page for list of officers and board members.) I personally would like to thank Darlene Lancaster and all oft the other folks who worked so hart to set up and run the event. There were many changes made to the pairings, location of the dinner, tee times, etc. But due to Darlene s great leadership and cool headedness every thing came off silky smooth and without a major hitch. Friday s golf format was play your own ball and was held at the most scenic Santee Cooper Country Club overlooking the sparkling waters of Lake Marion. The course is set amidst majestic pines and native foliage. The well conditioned layout, beautiful risk/ reward doglegs, strategic bunkering, miniverdae Bermuda grass greens, and challenging par 3 s tested the skills of our best golfers. Total yardage of the white tees is 6,094 yards with a 71.7/124 rating and the yardage from the ladies tees is 5,326 yards with a rating of 71/119. We had a total of 11 people who played this course, consisting of four women and seven men. Friday evening everyone pretty much ate dinner on their own and returned to the pool for a little socializing, dancing to the music previously recorded and played by John Ferrell, and fellowship from about 7PM until about 1:00AM. About half of the people met at a local bar called LT s for dancing and drinks. The bar had a great band from Columbia that provided music for dancing. Saturday s golf was played at the Santee National Golf Club. Nowhere is the grand tradition of golf more evident than this course. The course features Bermuda fairways, champion Bermuda greens, rolling hills, and mossy oak trees, coming together to mix low country charm with Highland terrain. Taking into account the age, physical condition, and pride of the male golfers it was decided to play from the gold tees - good decision if not we probably would have still been out there playing. The length of the course from the gold tees is a little more than the red tees and a little less than the white tees. The total length from the ladies tees is 4,748 yards with a rating of 68.2/116. Format was a play the best ball off the tee, then each player played his own ball until he putted out. The best two scores on each hole of each team was used to calculate the total score for the round. Winners of the event had a total net score of 161 and the second place team had a total score of 162. First place team consisted of Bob Utley, Ray hungover Suey, Beth Ball, and Alston Gordon. The second place winners were Sharon Coln, Robert Don Klein, Joanne Corcey, and John Ferrell. Actually, as it turned out a person s golfing skills had very little with winning the golf outing, it was more of a mental challenge as to who had the best means of keeping cool under the sweltering heat and humidity, and the team that had the best insect repellant. It is reported the DEET chemical company tests all of its new products at Santee National. As you looked around the course people looked more like a bunch of cows swinging their tails (clubs) at the gnats and mosquitoes than their golf balls. There were two closest to the pin holes, and for the ladies our own Deborah Fowler was the winner and awarded a brand new reconditioned King Cobra driver. For the men the closest to the pin (actually the only male on the green) was Robert Klein who was awarded a dozen newly reconditioned Slazenger Golf Balls. If you ladies have been reading closely you will notice there was quite a difference in the value of the prizes between the men and women. so few women playing we tried our best to make and keep them as happy as possible. Saturday night, everyone ate dinner at Clark s restaurant where the awards were presented, and the drawings for door prizes were held. We had a nice selection of golf clubs, golf balls, and shirts for the door prizes. ASGA National donated ten shirts, and our very own Barry McCarthy was gracious enough to rework a Cobra driver, putter and wedge for the event. Many thanks to Barry. I wish Barry a speedy recovery from his sickness over not being able to make the outing, hopefully he will be able to make the next one. Sunday morning we were up early and off to the Lake Marion golf course to play a Captain s Choice format. Reportedly, as it turned out, some teams had more than one captain. I understand on a couple of holes there was quite a discussion as to which ball was considered the best ball by the captains. Lake Marion Golf Club is one of the best golf experiences in the Santee area. It definitely has one thing going for it, there definitely are fewer biting insects than at Santee National. Not sure whether there are just fewer insects of if it was the sheets of Bounce Darlene handed out before we started. Everyone seemed to have a different way of wearing their Bounce. Some of the guys actually placed the sheet under the back of their caps making them look like deserters from the French Foreign Legion as they went flying in their golf carts down the course with the sheet of Bounce flapping in the wind on the backs of their necks. Lake Marion is famous for its manicured condition, sparkling lake, pine tree-lined fairways, and 47 bunkers - seemed like more than that. The beautiful greens are the newly developed miniverdae Bermuda grass. Again, the men played from the gold tees, and the ladies and Pete Hiram played from the red tees. Total distance from the gold tees is between 6,283 yards and 5,254 yards. The ladies total distance is 5,254 yards with a rating of 69.8/112 and the men s rating is 70.2/119. And, I might add, almost all of the tees are elevated. The course plays much, much, much longer than the total distance shown on the cards. The first place winners on Sunday were the team of Deborah Fowler, Gordon Alston, Darlene Lancaster, and Greg Varies with a net score of 71. There was a tie for second place with a total score of 72. The second place winners by way of the best score on the number 1 handicap hole were: Charlene Walker, Allen Sanford, Diane Fastnacht, and Ted Haigler. Honorable mention for runner-up goes to: Sharon Coln, Don Digiulian and Bob Utley. We really appreciate everyone taking time out of their busy schedules to come with us to Santee and enjoy the socializing, dancing and golf of course. Hope to see you there sometime soon in the future. SANTEE 2008 DEBRA FOWLER AND ALAN SANFORD ANOTHER SANTEE MEMORY On Sunday, while making the turn on hole 9, Deborah Fowler was putting her club into her bag when she felt this definite pain in the left cheek of her buttocks. At the very same instant she heard someone yell "fore" (obviously the perp was somewhat tardy in notification!) Deborah reports that in all her years of playing golf, this was the first time she Red Fox Score Card has been hit by a golf ball, but she is glad the blow was not to her head. She also reports that the real mystery is that why she hasn't been hit where she was before, given how big a target it is. LOL (Her words, not mine.) The guy that hit the errant ball was so shaken that he drove to his car and left the golf course. Moral of the Story by Deborah Fowler: Accidents do happen, however we must remember to watch out for the people in front of us. Make Plans Now!
