Dr. Robert Hebert University President Dr. Robert Hebert is president of McNeese State University and is in his 21st year as such. He is a native of Meaux, LA, is a graduate of Louisiana-Lafayette and holds his Ph.D from Florida State. The University has provided, for over a half century, service to its community and state and to the students who seek to secure their future through higher education. McNeese opened its doors in 1939 as Lake Charles Junior College and as a division of the Louisiana State University system. Name changes later were made to John McNeese Junior College (1940) and to McNeese State (1950) when the university separated from LSU. In 1970 the school obtained its present name of McNeese State University. The university presently has an enrollment of 8,800 and has over 300 fulltime faculty members, half of whom possess the doctoral degree. The university is located on 580 acres in south Lake Charles. McNeese was named after John McNeese, a pioneer Southwest Louisiana educator who served as the first superintendent of education in Calcasieu Parish. He was also a cattle rancher and was renowned for making the first cattle drive across the Sabine River, thus the school s nickname of Cowboys. established in 1939, McNeese State has an enrollment of 8,800. The university is located in Lake Charles, a city with a population of 80,000. The city is located in the Southwest corner of the state, 30 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico and 30 miles east of the Texas-Louisiana border. McNeese s schools of study are the Arts, Sciences, Engineering/Technology, Nursing, Education, Business and the Graduate School. The school produces more teachers annually than any other university in the state.
