PASSAGE THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF DRESSAGE WINNIPEG WINTER 2009/2010

EDITORS BIT WOW! Only four more months till show season starts back up again!!! It s crazy to think how fast the winter is going by even though it doesn t feel like it with all this cold weather we have been having the last couple of months. Even though the weather isn t that great we still truck out there in our millions of layers just to go and ride our big fuzzy animals. For some of us these winter months have meant training for a new level for the upcoming show season and for others it has meant making a new bond with a new mount. To think show season is just around the corner is very exciting because we will all be able to show our fellow competitors all the hard work everyone and their horses have put in these last several months. This show season is going to be a very exciting year for Dressage Winnipeg, and our first show in Brandon! With a revamped board for the new year everything should go off without a hitch! Hopefully... Remember to frequently check our lovely newly updated Dressage Winnipeg website to find out the latest in news and events that our going on in our wonderful club. We hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday season. See everyone in FOUR months! Tiffaney and Alexa Ps. Don t forget to renew your membership and sign up for volunteer positions! NOTES FROM THE BOARD The Annual General Meeting in November saw the election of two new Board members - Heather Thomas as Vice-Chair and Eileen Bosma as Treasurer. All other Board members are serving the second year of their term. Welcome to our two new members and thank you to all of the returning members! One of our returning members, Sarah Biron, has left the Board, but the Show Committee has held on to her and she continues to donate her time and services in that capacity. By the time this newsletter reaches you, we hope to have filled the Education and Clinics position vacated by Sarah. The big news this month is the new Dressage Winnipeg website! Kudo's to Myriam Dyck who designed and set up the website and to Dayna Oulion who provided guidance and coordinated everyone's input. Please check out the photo gallery - you are sure to find a picture of either you or your horse thanks to shutterbug Barb Wansbutter. Look under "Fun Stuff" for an absolutely hilarious video of horseless dressage wannabe's! And who said dressage was boring???!! Don't forget to get your Membership Renewal in - beat the early bird deadline of February 29 and save on your membership fee. When you fill out your Volunteer Form, you'll notice that the Board has increased the number of volunteer hours required and the payout in lieu of volunteering. When we added the Midsummer Madness Show, it was on a trial basis. Now it is a regular part of our show season and the extra hours are required to help run it as well as to ensure that we are able to provide the services requested by our members. For example, many other shows across Canada only provide gatekeepers for their Provincial Championships whereas DW tries to have gatekeepers at all of our shows. We have all come to depend on the whipper-in, a relatively new position with Dressage Winnipeg, but one that has helped our shows run smoothly and on time. Remember, you can get your friends and family to help you out - most of the jobs don't need any dressage experience! Although we may be having some chilly weather right now, spring is almost just around the corner...only two more months (unless that was spring we had in January!). Before you know it, the May show will be upon us. We hope you've been getting in some quality riding time and are already thinking of what tests you'll ride and what classes you'll enter over the course of the show season. Stay warm, stay safe and happy riding! 2010

Candace Reid Candace is a 21-year old Artist, currently residing in Winnipeg, MB. She graciously drew the beautiful picture for the cover page of the 2009 spring Passage and the 2009/10 winter Passage Newsletter. She has been riding English since 1999, and has a deep love for horses. She rides a lovely paint horse named Holly, who she works with on dressage. Candace and Holly are hoping to hit the show ring this year! Candace is currently working at living Canvas Tattoo as a full-time Tattoo artist. She also works with pencil, ink, charcoal, and paint in her artistic creations. Check out their website at: www.livingcanvastattoo.ca Captain De Kenyeres Scholarships Winners! Becky Adams As one of the three recipients of the $500 Captain De Kenyeres scholarships, I plan to use this generous donation in order to further my dressage career and level of expertise in the sport in different ways. After hearing the wonderful praise for the Dressage Winnipeg Camp which was held last summer, I plan to use this money to participate in this year s upcoming camp with my horse Continuity. In addition to attending this camp, I will use this money to help pay for my lessons with my coach Christina Dolinski of West Wind Stables. If it wasn t for her hard work and dedication to helping me receive this scholarship, I would not be in the position that I am in today. Overall I am very grateful for this fabulous opportunity, which will help me progress as a dressage rider and strengthen the bond between myself and my horse. Mackenzie Ryall I am so happy to have won the Captain de Kenyeres Scholarship, with it I helped pay for my first Irene S. clinic, Oct 27-29. I learned so much with Irene and had a great time working very hard with my pony Mr. Big (Peanut). He is a 17 year old Section B Welsh Pony Gelding. We have been a team for 2 years now. I hope I never out grow my pony, my Mom says he's worth his weight in GOLD, I agree! Rachel Kilgour Rachel s plan for her scholarship money is to save it for the future for horse related activities or purchases.

THE KENDRA MCBAIN MEMORIAL COMPETITION circa 2004: Judge Joanna Crilly presenting Kendra with one of her many awards. Sadly, on December 22, 2009, at the age of 18, Kendra Rose McBain lost her battle with cancer. Kendra was a remarkable young lady who loved animals, her family and her friends. Even with the challenges she faced, she never lost her optimism, her grace, and the compassion she had for those around her. Riding was a huge part of her life before she was diagnosed with an extremely rare form of cancer at the age of 15. She was an active member of Dressage Winnipeg, not only as a Junior Competitor, but as a participating Junior Board Member as well. Kendra, along with her mother Tammy, (Vice-Chair) sat on the board together from 2005-2006. Kendra was not only a lovely rider but a strong competitor and along with a little white pony named Houdini won Champion and Reserve several times in the three years she competed in the Junior/Open Category. In 2003 she was Junior Training Level Champion (Spring Flowers National Show) and Junior Training Level Reserve (Manitoba Provincial Championships). In 2004 she was Junior First Level Reserve (Spring Flowers National Show) and was awarded the Junior First Level High Score (National) at the Capt. John De Kenyeres Memorial Show in June. In 2005 she was Junior and Open First Level Champion (Spring Flowers National Show). She was also awarded the Junior and Open First Level High Score (Primary); Junior First Level Champion (National); and Open First Level Reserve (National) at the Capt. John De Kenyeres Memorial Show. We are pleased to announce that Dressage Winnipeg has changed the name of our Spring Flowers Competition to the Kendra McBain Memorial Competition to celebrate Kendra s love of horses and the sport of Dressage. Kendra s favourite colour was purple so a special purple ribbon will be presented, in her memory, to the Junior Champion of this show. Funds raised at this show will go to Cancer Care Manitoba in her name - We hope you will join us in this celebration.

I have read and understand the above: Signature Printed Name Stable Name Date Signature, parent or guardian ( i f under age 18 ) **NOTE** Dressage Winnipeg would like to encourage all members to complete their rider bios. These are extremely important to our organization to help promote the sport as well as to show our potential sponsors how passionate we all are. If you have your bio submitted by April 1, 2010 we will put your name in for a draw for a FREE MEMBERSHIP! An outline for rider bios can be found on the new and improved DW website!

Dressage Winnipeg Rider's Biographies Needed Now! Sponsorship is a business relationship and should be mutually beneficial to the sponsored individual and the sponsoring company. Most companies seek a return on their support or investment, ranging from goodwill within the community to more complex benefits such as media exposure, increased sales and/or brand awareness. Sponsorship is about building long-term relationships; the longer the relationship lasts, the greater the value that can be derived from it. It is not an exact science, however, and manifests itself in a host of different forms on many different levels. First things first, sponsors want to know who they are sponsoring - so this is where the rider's bios come in! Please take the time to make your bio professional, informative, exciting but most importantly show your potential. Included here are some key points that I would like members to cover and to help everyone get started: FIRST PART: ( p lease answer these questions - should be no more than half a page ) What age did you start riding? Why? Horse stats -Talk about your training regime. Detail what you will do on an average day and list how many hours you put in per week/month. (Make sure they appreciate what it takes to get to the top of Dressage.) Benefits that you think you can offer a sponsor. (I will help with this, but let me know what your thoughts are, since in the end, it's your sponsor) Highlight your goals/aspirations. (Show your long-term commitment to Dressage AND that you hold a high expectation of yourself.) SECOND PART: ( w ill be a list - will be the bottom half of the page ) Detail your successes/results. List your medals won, placements achieved and events gone to. Include a list of upcoming major events in which you and your horse will be competing. Dressage Winnipeg would like to encourage all members to complete their rider bios. These are extremely important to our organization to help promote the sport as well as to show our potential sponsors how passionate we all are. If you have your bio submitted by April 1, 2010 we will put your name in for a draw for a FREE MEMBERSHIP!
