Altos n o 145. May 2016 news

Introduction from the Captain - Mr Knut Pedersen April was a soft start for me. After all the Easter competitions and social events that followed, it was nice to have a normal month to start the year as the new Captain. There is a lot to learn and get involved in. Therefore, I have to thank Christophe, Cristina, Stewart, David M. and David P. for getting me on the right track. The St George s Stableford followed the April Medal, and was well attended with a great social event. The Men s Roll-Up also started with a monthly Stableford; the first Saturday of the month. We have a sponsor for the 1st prize, offering a 100 voucher for Casa dos Pinheiros. The weather was a challenge during April. The Algarve hasn t experienced this kind of weather in spring for 60 years. Rain and rain, and then rain again. I hope that the summer will come soon, so we can have longer drives and better roll on the fairways, (if you can hit them). We also welcomed Quinta da Ria for a friendly men s return match. We lost three to two, but had a great day and a nice lunch after. The players from Quinta da Ria did not want to leave after the lunch, so we continued the day with a party on the terrace. I would like to thank Steven Crowdey for helping me and taking care of our guests. Also, I would like to thank all the members who entered the match. We will have a men s and ladies friendly match with them later this year; I will come back with dates. The first Committee Meeting was held on the 26th April. I would like to welcome our new Vice Lady Captain, Zoë Pirret, onto the committee. With her capacity, I am sure the House Committee is in good hands. It looks like we re set for a good year ahead; improvements on the golf course and the Club House are being planned. Mai had her first charity event, which was a Beach Walk on the 10th May, and as Captain, I would like to thank Mai and the ladies for the great job and effort they put in to this. They walked on the beach in rain and sunshine for two hours, and came back to the Club House for a homemade lunch. They managed to collect 6,200 for the Lions and Salvation Army charities. This will help many children and the elderly for months to come. Amazing, and thanks again for this result. The Van Doorns are moving to Switzerland after an active role in our club for over 20 years. For me, it s sad that they are leaving, since it s somewhat Michael s fault that I am the Captain now. He was one of the founders of the Cloggies and the leader for over 17 years. Therese is the only Lady Captain to have served twice, and an active member for the ladies, as well on the Social Committee. I hope they have a great trip to Switzerland, and wish them the best for the future. With this, I would like to welcome the summer and sun to the Algarve, and hope to see as many of you as possible on the course. Remember Captain s Day on the 4th June I can promise golf, a party and fun!!! Hamish Rumball 1942-2016 It is with the deepest regret that I have to announce the passing of Hamish Rumball. He had been stalwart member of Pinheiros Altos in the early days of the Club. I am sure you will join with me in sending condolences to his family. page 2

Best Second Day Sally Evans Strokeplay Championship Best Second Day Club Captain Knut Pedersen Winner Gross of the 2015 Eclectic Tim Russell Director of Golf - Monthly Report April started with the Strokeplay Championship, which considering that it was played over a two-day medal and off the back tees, we had a very good entry. Duncan Evans is the new Club Champion with gross scores of 83 and 82, while Rie Cherubini is the Ladies Club Champion with scores of 89 and 86; Congratulations to Duncan and Rie! Congratulations to Sue Georges on winning the April Medal and Alberto Nicoletti on winning the St George s Stableford. On the last weekend of April, a few members travelled up to Vidago, which is North of Oportom, and we enjoyed a very nice four days of golf in a fantastic environment. I would recommend anyone to stay there as the hotel, service and golf course were fantastic, and we were lucky to have four sunny days. The winner of the trophy was Orlando Hill, who won with over 10 points ahead of the rest of the field. Please don t forget to visit the Captain s Day sign-up sheet, which is up in the Club House; we are now very close as it will be played on 4th June 2016. There s also the Portuguese Day on 10th June 2016 and Member s Gala Week to enter, which will be played between 25th and 30th July 2016. Christophe and Roger Presenting the Ballesteros Trophy to the Winner Orlando Hill I am very saddened to announce that one of our very first members at Pinheiros Altos and very good friend, Hamish Rumball, passed away on the golf course last Friday as he was playing golf; one of the things he most loved in life. It is a great loss to all of us and to the Golf Club. I would like to offer my sincere condolences to his family and many friends. page 4

Well done for great results and to all the ladies in the prize giving, especially to Rie Cherubini for winning the gross and Sue Georges winning the nett. Our fun game on the following Wednesday brought out 28 to play. It was a team event with everyone putting their name down beside their playing partners...hence making their own teams (and an easy day for me). I decided to have the 1st Division off blue tees and 2nd Division off red tees. It proved a successful format and we will do this again. Well done to the winning team of Stella Jeffrey, Melaura Parker and Majida Lester. As I headed home for a week, Zoe kindly took over and ran the Stableford. This was the first month with the voucher for Casa da Quinta, so well done to Sue Georges for playing well and winning the best Stableford prize over both divisions. After celebrating the zero birthday, I returned to the Algarve. On the Wednesday, we had a team event but I m afraid due to April showers, we abandoned play. It was a shame because we had no page 5

cancellations and the eve was lovely and sunny. As we had plenty of time, I distributed the sponsor cards to those taking part in the Charity Walk on the 10th May, which donated all monies to The Lions Club in Almancil and The Salvation Army. The final Wednesday was Captain s choice so we had 1st Division off the blue tees and 2nd Division off the red tees. Well done to Denise (1st Division) and sorry to Pat Murrish, as I beat her on a count back (2nd Division). May is a busy month in Pinheiros Altos so I hope you all enjoy your golf in the sun. Lady Captain Mai Markey Presenting the Voucher for Casa da Quinta to the April Winner Sue Georges Thank you ladies for your farewell gift, I had a great time in South Africa! Adrienne Buth (Lady Captain 2014-15) PRO TIP - Ross Sutherland Putting Stroke Basics How to Control the Motion with the Left Arm and Hand The putting stroke is done with the shoulders and arms. It s a two sided action; with the left hand and arm dominating, while the right hand rests lightly on the club and stabilizes the stroke. You should feel you are using a one lever system, stroking through the ball with the left wrist stabilized, and the left hand and arm remaining in line. page 6

Report from the Greens Committee It is May but the weather thinks it s February! However, the sun is waiting to reappear and this year, the committee are going to operate a slightly different reporting style. My fellow committee members Tony Hickey and David Ford (the Vice-Captain) will add their separate views in each month s report. This not only saves me some work, but allows members to see the diversity of our views. I begin by saying that the course was in a very disappointing condition when Cathy and I returned from holiday just two weeks ago. Weeds had grown in profusion both on fairways, and around the greens and shrubbery. The tees needed cutting and the greens looked starved. Members were not surprisingly upset as we had experienced a mild winter and most courses in the Algarve were showing growth and early signs of maturity. The weather had been unsettled but not as bad as now! Drastic action was required and the committee (excluding David who was away) met with the Club Director and Carlos Guerreiro, our consultant agronomist, just over a week ago. We have asked Sesinando, the Course Manager, to prepare a 12-month plan for the course with a strict timetable for both maintenance, and the application of feed and herbicides. This is awaited and will be monitored by our consultant, the director and the committee. Tony, David and I will take on responsibility for different aspects of the course. New replacement machinery is promised and the course is the priority for the owners. (Tony) Lakes and Fairway s: I think the meeting we had with Christophe was good; I felt we made some real progress. The meeting entailed planning, new reporting and consulting expertise in the form of Carlos Guerreiro. In an effort to get something going with the lakes, I have asked if Carlos Guerreiro s colleague can assist me in developing a programme that we could adopt to ensure the lakes are fit for purpose. He has promised to forward me the person s name and contact details. He will also start to analyse the make up of our fairways, and assist management with a programme that can help them recover, stay healthy and also be fit for use. This meeting with management was also promising because of the list of priorities we discussed - I hope they are kept and updated with progress at the next meeting. The machinery is most important, as with the exception of the new rough mower, the remaining mowers are not up to the job. It is hard to grow grass if you cannot cut it. We were introduced to two new reports, they came from the Pro s Kenny and Ross. Kenny gave a report on the condition of the Academy area, including the practice ground and signage. Ross produced a report on the golf course. His report included a general overview with some specific areas that were not up to standard. I hope both of those reports continue to feature at our meetings and the points in distress are cured. I will cover for greens and tees, Tony for fairways and lakes, and David for bunkers and general areas. Both Christophe and the COO, Ruben Paula appreciate that we need to move forward very quickly and fully support the strategy. Stewart Harper, Chairman. P.S. David Ford will be adding his thoughts next month, but due to holidays and bad weather he has not played PA for some time! page 7

Social Golf by Zoë Pirret Recently, we have seen some heavy rain but fortunately Sunday turned out to be a dry, sunny day for the Social Golf. We danced our way through the 18 holes with a foxtrot format counting 1, 2, 3, 4; 1, 2, 3, 4. We had a great turnout of 48 players and it was lovely to welcome new members, as well as guests. Sadly, this was Therese s last social and we thanked her for all her support at the socials over the years.
