Race and Ethnicity using the Califrnia Health Interview Survey (CHIS) The Califrnia Health Interview Survey (CHIS) cntains rich and detailed racial and ethnic infrmatin abut Califrnia s diverse ppulatin. This dcument prvides details abut the race/ethnicity variables available in CHIS, hw each variable was cnstructed, and fr which CHIS cycle/s each variable is available. RACEHPR2 (RACE UCLA CHPR DEFINTION, 2007 and later) CHIS 2007 RACEHPR2 was created with the release f CHIS 2007 as a new versin f RACEHPR. The new variable (RACEHPR2) emplys the same lgic as the riginal variable, but is nt cmparable due t changes in the questinnaire. Beginning with CHIS 2007, OMB required a new questin fr respndents that identified with mre than ne racial/ethnic grup. The new questin asked multiple race/ethnic respndents whether r nt they mst identified with a single racial r ethnic grup; nly thse that said yes were then asked which grup they mst identified with. This change results in a much larger prprtin f the sample in the Other Single/Multiple Race categry. The race/ethnic categries fr RACEHPR2 and RACEHPR remain the same: Latin, Pacific Islander, American Indian/Alaskan Native, Asian, African American, White and Other Single/Multiple Race. Rules fr categry assignment f RACEHPR2 can be fund in Appendix A. RACEHPR (RACE - UCLA CHPR DEFINITION, 2001 t 2005) CHIS 2001, 2003, 2005 In CHIS 2001, 2003 and 2005, the RACEHPR variable was created as a measure f race that takes int accunt which race/ethnicity the respndents mst identify with if mre than ne race is reprted. Respndents wh reprted mre than ne race/ethnicity were asked which grup s/he mst identified with and RACEHPR was assigned accrding t several criteria (see Appendix B fr mre details). In CHIS 2007 the Office f Management and Budget (OMB) required a change t the CHIS questinnaire that prevents the identical cnstructin f the RACEHPR variable. Fr respndents wh identified with mre than ne race, CHIS was n lnger allwed t ask which race the respndent mst identified with. Instead, a new fllw-up questin was asked: D yu identify with any ne race in particular? If the respndent indicated yes, then a fllw-up questin was asked abut which particular race they mst identify with. If the respndent indicated n, the respndent s race/ethnicity was assigned depending n several new criteria. Due t this questinnaire change in 2007, 1) the RACEHPR variable can n lnger be cnstructed as it had been in the past and is nly available in cycles 2001 thrugh 2005, 2) a new variable, RACEHPR2, is nw available as a cnstruct f race based n the mst identified race infrmatin; this new variable has a much larger multiple race categry and is nly available beginning in CHIS 2007.
Race and Ethnicity using the Califrnia Health Interview Survey (CHIS) RACECEN (RACE CENSUS 2000 DEFINITION) CHIS 2001-2007 The RACECEN variable uses the Census SF1 definitin/tabulatin f race. Accrding t the Census definitin, 1) there is n separate categry fr Latins since peple wh identify their rigin as Spanish, Hispanic, r Latin may be f any race, 2) race is cnsidered a separate cncept frm Hispanic rigin (ethnicity), and 3) wherever pssible, separate questins shuld be asked n each cncept. The Census race categries are: White, Black r African American, American Indian and Alaska Native, Asian, Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander, Sme Other race and Tw r Mre Races. Respndents wh slely identify themselves as Latin r Hispanic are assigned t the ther categry. Fr mre specific infrmatin n any f these race categries, please g t: http://www.census.gv/ppulatin/www/cen2000/briefs.html. RACEDOF (Race Frmer Department f Finance Definitin) CHIS 2001-2007 The RACEDOF variable uses the frmer definitin f race classificatin frm the Califrnia Department f Finance s race categries (2001). Latin is cnsidered t be a race categry fr this variable and is given pririty. The categries fr RACEDOF are: Latin, Nn-Latin Pacific Islander, Nn-Latin American Indian/Alaskan Native, Nn- Latin Asian, Nn-Latin African American, Nn-Latin White, Nn-Latin Other One Race, and Nn-Latin Tw r Mre Races. OMBSRREO (OMB Self-Reprted Race Ethnicity) CHIS 2001-2007 OMBSRREO is derived frm the RACEDOF variable and fllws the Office f Management and Budget-revised guidelines (1997) set frth in Statistical Plicy Directive N. 15 and the Census mdificatin f the OMB guidelines. OMB separates race and ethnicity, and recgnizes five main racial categries: American Indian r Alaska Native, Asian, Black r African American, Native Hawaiian r Other Pacific Islander, and White. Categries fr the OMBSRREO variable are: Hispanic, Nn-Hispanic White, Nn- Hispanic African American, Nn-Hispanic American Indian/Alaskan Native, Nn- Hispanic Asian, Nn-Hispanic Native Hawaiian, Other Pacific Islander and Nn-Hispanic Mre than ne race. Unlike RACEDOF, OMBSRREO des nt cntain a nn-hispanic ther single race categry. Appendix A RACEHPR2 RACEHPR2 values are assigned in a hierarchical manner: 1. Adjustments fr Nn Latin Respndents: If single race reprted, then RACEHPR2 is assigned based n single race. If multiple races reprted and: Respndent identifies with ne race in particular (AA5G, TI2F), then RACEHPR2 is assigned based n AA5F/TI2E. Respndent des nt identify with ne race in particular, then RACEPHR2 is assigned in the multiple race categry. 2. Adjustments fr Latin Respndents: If single race reprted and: If Latin is imputed and race is nt imputed, then RACEHPR2 is assigned based n single race. If Latin is nt imputed and race is imputed, then RACEPHR2 is assigned in the Latin categry. If Latin and race variables are nt imputed and: Respndent identifies with ne race in particular (AA5G, TI2F), then RACEHPR2 is assigned based n AA5F/TI2E. Respndent des nt identify with ne race in particular, then RACEPHR2 is assigned in the multiple race categry. Reprt single race as ther, then use AA5AOS/TI2OS t assign RACEHPR2. If multiple races reprted and: If Latin is nt imputed and race is imputed, then RACEPHR2 is assigned as Latin. Others Respndent identifies with ne race in particular (AA5G, TI2F), then RACEHPR2 is assigned based n AA5F/TI2E. Respndent des nt identify with ne race in particular, then RACEPHR2 is assigned in the multiple race categry. 3. Adjustments fr AIAN Respndents: If a respndent reprted belnging t a Califrnia tribe (AA5C, TI2A) r identifies mst with American Indian r Alaska Native in AA5F/TI2E, then RACEHPR2 is reassigned t the AIAN categry. 4. Assignment f Race fr Children Respndents: Child race assigned based n adult race (RACEHPR2). If child-first case, and n adult race infrmatin is available then Child race assigned accrding t adlescent race, mther/father s cuntry f birth, and/r language spken at hme. If child-first case, and n ther infrmatin is available then Child race assigned thrugh imputatin.
Appendix B RACEHPR RACEHPR values are assigned in the fllwing hierarchical manner: 1. The number f races reprted fr each case is cunted using the race variables SRPI, SRAI, SRAS, SRAA, SRW, and SRO. 2. The nn-latin cases (if SRH=2) are assigned RACEHPR values. If nly ne race reprted, then they are assigned t the apprpriate single race categry If nly SRPI=1, then assigned t Pacific Islander. If nly SRAI=1, then assigned t American Indian/Alaska Native. If nly SRAS=1, then assigned t Asian. If nly SRAA=1, then assigned t African American. If nly SRW=1, then assigned t White. If nly SRO=1, then assigned t Other Single/Multiple Race. If mre than ne race, then they are assigned t ne f the fllwing RACEHPR categries depending n hw they respnd t the questin abut which grup they mst identify with in item AA5F/TI2E. 3. The Latin cases (if SRH=1) are assigned RACEHPR values. If care are statistically imputed t be Latin (if ISRH >= 1), and race variables (SRPI, SRAI, SRAS, SRAA, SRW, and SRO) are nt imputed, then they are assigned as fllws, if nly a single race is reprted: If nly SRPI=1, then assigned t Pacific Islander. If cases that are statistically imputed t be Latin (if ISRH >= 1) and race variables (SRPI, SRAI, SRAS, SRAA, SRW, and SRO) are nt imputed with multiple races reprted, then they are assigned values depending n the grup they mst identify with in AA5F/TI2E. If cases that are nt statistically imputed t be Latin (if ISRH < 1), and the race variables (SRPI, SRAI, SRAS, SRAA, SRW, and SRO) are imputed, then they are assigned t the Latin categry. If cases are nt statistically imputed t be Latin (if ISRH < 1), and nt imputed t be white (if ISRW < 0) with multiple races, then they are assigned depending n which grup they mst identify with in AA5F/TI2E. 4. Adjustment 1: All Latin cases (if SRH=1) with a single race reprted t be ther (if nly SRO=1), and in which the race/ethnicity specified in item AA5OS is an identified natinality r skin clr, are assigned t the Latin categry.
Appendix B RACEHPR Examples f these ther r pen specify respnses include: Mexican, Chican, Hispanic, Salvadran, Mren and Cuban. 5. Adjustment 2: The Latin cases (if SRH=1) with nne f these specified (in AA5AOS), and in which the race/ethnicity the respndent mst identifies with in item AA5F is unknwn, are cded as Latin. 6. Adjustment 3: The Latin cases (if SRH=1) with multiple races, where the SRH variable and in which race variable are bth imputed, are assigned t the ther single/multiple race categry fr this variable. 7. Adjustment 4: The cases with RACEHPR~=3 that meet ne f the fllwing criteria are assigned t the American Indian/Alaska Native categry (RACEHPR=3): If identify themselves as an enrlled member in an AIAN tribe (if AA5C=1). If single race, Nn-Latin (if SRH~=1), and American Indian/Alaska Native (if SRAI=1). If single race, American Indian/Alaska Native (if SRAI=1), and mst identify with American Indian/Alaska Native. If multiple race, American Indian/Alaska Native (if SRAI=1), and mst identify with American Indian/Alaska Native.
