EXPECTATIONS HIGH FOR 2011-12 MOREHEAD STATE MEN S BASKETBALL TEAM A year ago, Morehead State enjoyed one of its most successful men s basketball seasons in school history. Now, the 2011-12 Eagles face expectations that have never been higher. The 2010-11 season was certainly one to remember. Morehead State finished 25-10 overall, 14-1 at home and 13-5 in the Ohio Valley Conference. The Eagles also won the OVC Tournament and upset Louisville in the NCAA Tournament. Kenneth Faried, who was taken 22nd overall by the Denver Nuggets, put an exclamation point on the campaign in June by becoming the school s first-ever first-round NBA Draft pick. As a senior, Faried averaged 17.3 points and 14.5 rebounds while shooting 62 percent from the field. He also tallied 1,673 career rebounds to set an NCAA modern-era (post-1973) record. Faried and Demonte Harper, who averaged 15.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.4 assists while starting all 35 games a season ago, are gone. But don t think the shelf is completely bare. A talented trio of returning starters highlights this year s bunch. Guards Terrance Hill and Ty Proffitt are back for their senior seasons, while forward Drew Kelly prepares for his sophomore campaign. Hill, a native of Columbus, Ga., knocked down 64 three-pointers a year ago en route to 10.7 points per contest. Proffitt, who hails from London, Ky., averaged 7.9 points and shot 86 percent from the free-throw line. Kelly, who is originally from Franklin, Tenn., averaged 5.0 points. Guard Lamont Austin, a senior from Topeka, Kan., and forward Dionte Ferguson, a sophomore from Prattville, Ala., round out the group of five returning letterwinners. The Eagles also welcome 10 newcomers to the program this season. The junior class includes Kahlil Owens, Marsell Holden, Devon Atkinson and Milton Chavis, while the freshman group features Will Bailey, Deandre Mathieu, Jordan Percell, Angelo Warner, Orlando Coleman and Jeff Drew. Donnie Tyndall, who owns a career record of 126-75, enters his sixth season at MSU and seventh year as a collegiate head coach. His associate head coach is Wade O Connor, while Adam Howard and Jareem Dowling serve as assistant coaches. Morehead State faces another challenging schedule in 2011-12. The slate is highlighted by non-conference affairs against West Virginia and North Carolina State in addition to 16 conference tilts. The Eagles will have at least three appearances on national television. MSU will participate in the College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon at the College of Charleston on Nov. 15, plus it will host a pair of ESPNU showdowns -- Austin Peay on Dec. 31 and Tennessee Tech on Jan. 28. 2011-12 Senior Class (from left) Terrance Hill, Ty Proffitt & Lamont Austin

KENNETH FARIED TAKEN 22ND OVERALL BY DENVER NUGGETS (Story courtesy of Drew Dickerson / posted June 23 on MSUEagles.com) Morehead State graduate and former men's basketball player Kenneth Faried was selected 22nd overall by the Denver Nuggets in the first round of Thursday's 2011 NBA Draft, held at the Prudential Center. Faried is the eighth first-round pick in Ohio Valley Conference history and the first ever NBA first-round draft pick for Morehead State. He is the 18th player in Eagle history to be drafted. He is the first player to be taken from MSU since 2004 (Ricky Minard) and will be the fifth OVC player taken in the past 10 years. Tennessee State's Carlos Rogers, taken in 1994 by the then Seattle SuperSonics, was the last first-round pick from the OVC. The two-time Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year and three-time OVC Defensive Player of the Year, Faried led Morehead State to its second OVC Tournament championship in the last three years. He established the NCAA modernera (post-1973) career rebounding record with 1,673 rebounds. Faried s 86 career double-doubles place him just one behind only Tim Duncan in doubles-doubles in NCAA Division I history. Faried, who was named the NABC Defensive Player of the Year and earned seven different All-America honors, led the Ohio Valley Conference in blocks per game at 2.3 and was tied for second in the league in steals per game at 1.9. Faried and the Eagles tied a school record with 25 wins this season. He led the team with 17.3 points and 14.5 rebounds per game while shooting 62.3 percent from the field.
