ICE PROTECTION - PROPELLER. DESCRIPTION This section describes the portion of the Ice Protection System pertaining to the propeller. This includes the slinger ring and the de-icing propeller boots. Grooved rubber boots are fitted to the root end of the propeller blade. Fluid is dispensed into the slinger ring where centrifugal force directs it to three individual feed tubes. Each feed tube aligns with grooves in the rubber boot which delivers fluid to the blade s leading edge. All Page

() Installation - Anti-Ice Propeller Boot WARNING: Blades with incorrectly painted surfaces or surfaces with no paint protection are likely to develop corrosion beneath the boot. (a) Inspect blade surfaces for chipped or missing paint. (b) If necessary, paint propeller blades. (Refer to 6-0) (c) Acquire necessary tools, equipment, and supplies. Description P/N or Spec. Supplier Purpose Silver Marking Pencil - Any Source Outline position of boot on propeller. Masking Tape - Any Source Mask off boot installation area. MEK Solvent - Any Source Solvent cleaning. Scotch Grip Rubber and Gasket Adhesive 300L 3M St. Paul, MN 5544 65-3-650 Adhere boot to propeller. Conductive Edge Sealer A56B SMR Technologies Fenwick, WV 800-6-6899 Seal around edge of boot. (d) Solvent clean bonding surfaces of propeller. Do not mix boots with different identification numbers on the same propeller. Page 6 (e) (f) (g) Verify identification number of boots to be bonded. Visually examine bond surface of boot to ensure it has a dull, blasted, or cross-hatch finish. Solvent clean bonding surface and exterior of boot. All
Note: Applying masking tape to top surface of boot helps prevent curling during installation. (h) (i) (j) (k) (l) (m) Apply masking tape to boot on straight end and along sides. Determine correct position of boot. To align inboard edge of boot, measure 0.5 inch (.3 cm) from propeller hub and mark blade for reference. Sight up leading edge of blade from tip to shank and place centerline mark on shank in line with leading edge centerline. 3 Position boot on blade and align centerline of boot with shank and leading edge centerlines. 4 Fold boot over blade and hold in position. 5 Trace outline of boot around entire perimeter except at shank. Mask approximately 0.5 inch (6.35 mm) outside of boot installation area with tape. Solvent clean bonding surfaces of propeller and boot. Apply one coat of adhesive to bonding surfaces of boot and propeller. Allow to dry hour minimum. Apply a second thin coat of adhesive to bonding surfaces of boot and propeller. Allow to dry until adhesive evaporates, approximately -3 minutes. Note: Parts must be joined before adhesive loses tack or adhesive must be reactivated by wiping with solvent. (n) Align centerline of boot along leading edge of propeller and press firmly to ensure no bubbles or gaps occur between boot and leading edge. Note: Avoid stretching boot during installation. Smooth out all bubbles and ensure no gaps exist between boot and blade surfaces. If boot is not aligned correctly, or bubbles or gaps exist, remove boot by pulling up using a quick motion and reapply boot. If adhesive is removed from either surface or becomes too dry, remove boot and reapply adhesive. (o) (p) (q) (r) Working from leading edge down, press boot firmly to blade surface. Remove masking tape from boot. Allow adhesive to cure a minimum of 8 hours at 60 to 80 F. Apply sealant along edges of boot. Note: Sealant shall not cover labels that may exist on propeller. Apply masking tape to achieve approximately.0 inch (.54 cm) total width centered on edge of boot. Apply masking tape to inboard area of hub adjacent to prop boot. Ensure sealant covers boot edge a minimum of 0.5 inch (6.35 mm). (s) 3 Apply one even coat of sealant and allow to dry 4 hours at 60 to 80 F. 4 Immediately remove masking tape from surface before sealant is dry. Solvent clean excess adhesive from propeller.
