As I bega to compose this letter, I realized how quickly my first six moths passed as your Presidet ad Chief Executive Officer. Although 2016 represets a year of trasitio for me ad for the orgaizatio, we made solid progress o may frots. Persoally, I m truly humbled with the hoor to lead our taleted staff, dedicated voluteers, ad to serve our commo cause! Oce agai our dedicated headquarters staff ad voluteers i the field expaded our outreach while stregtheig our programs ad services. The overall focus for the year was to expad our programs ad services to a ever-icreasig populatio of disabled veteras. As you ll fid outlied i this Aual Report we ve ejoyed may orgaizatioal successes durig 2016. A few programmatic highlights iclude: Over 210 operatioal programs servig disabled veteras ad disabled military service persoel from all 50 states ad Germay. Each program is maaged at the local level by voluteers that work with Departmet of Veteras Affairs (VA) facilities, Departmet of Defese (DOD) military istallatios, Warrior Trasitio Uits (WTU) ad other istitutios. PHWFF has 20 geographic regios throughout the Uited States ad 1 regio i Europe. Over 3,200 PHWFF voluteers cotributed more tha 262,000 hours. This eabled more tha 7,500 disabled veteras ad disabled active military service persoel to participate i PHWFF program activities. The emphasis for 2017 is to cotiue to expad our orgaizatioal reach while we complete ad deliver a improved website with a data maagemet applicatio. This applicatio will eable us to deliver cosistetly high quality programs to our participats. FINANCIALS Statemet of Fiacial Positio I 2016, PHWFF reveue icreased 27% over the previous year ad 10% over the projected budget. This strog icrease puts the orgaizatio i a positio to provide more support to PHWFF participats by icreasig the amout of moey spet o core programmatic expeses. I the past five years, PHWFF has more tha doubled the amout of support provided to our Regioal ad Natioal Programs. At the same time, we cotiue to maitai low overhead costs. I 2016, 84% of reveue wet directly to fud programmatic expeses. PHWFF attributes its success to the legio of dedicated voluteers leadig programs all across the coutry providig fly tyig, fly castig, fly rod buildig ad other istructio; to those servig o the Board of Trustees; or to the may others who voluteer time ad talets to support the ogoig work of Healig Those Who Serve. I 2016, PHWFF voluteers cotributed 262,768 hours which, usig IRS guidelies, equates to a cotributio of $6,343,220 i a ocash value to our orgaizatio. The evet focused o traiig ad better equippig our voluteers with the skills ad kowledge eeded to help heal the ijured ad disabled military service persoel ad disabled veteras we serve atiowide. Brigig together over 177 voluteer Program Leads, Assistat Program Leads, Regioal Coordiators, ad Deputy Regioal Coordiators, the NPR was a excellet opportuity to provide the tools ad traiig voluteers eed to cotiue providig cosistet therapeutic experieces at each of our programs across the coutry. Special guest speakers icluded U.S. Departmet of Veteras Affairs Deputy Secretary Sloa Gibso; Deputy Assistat Secretary of Defese James Rodriguez; ad U.S. Departmet of Veteras Affairs Director of Volutary Services Sabria Clark, amog others. The NPR was fuded by a grat from the Departmet of Veteras Affairs, Adaptive Sports Grat Program, uder the Office of Rehabilitatio ad Prosthetic Service. I spet 35 years workig i Corporate America, ad I shudder to thik of how much time I wasted o covetios ad other such pow-wows. They were ofte thily disguised boodoggles to get out of the office ad to someplace more fu. The Natioal Program Redezvous was t like that at all. Day after day was filled with good iformatio, valuable idea-sharig ad heart-warmig stories that all of us eed to hear to keep us eergized i the work we do for those who serve ad who have served. Throughout the Redezvous, we were made aware of how importat it is for us to respect the trust that our doors ad our participats place i us. The Redezvous kept all of us focused o our missio, ad o how valuable a opportuity we had bee provided. Fly Tyig The aual Natioal Fly Tyig Competitio featured over 50 etries from PHWFF Participats. This competitio showcases vetera participats fly tyig skills ad creativity garered from program classes ad idepedet study i a casual, fu cotest. This great aual program has grow each year sice its iceptio i 2012 ad we ve bee delighted ad astouded to see the remarkable patters ad flies submitted from our participats across the coutry. Five fialists from this competitio atted the Iteratioal Fly Tyig Symposium where the wiers are aouced. While attedig the two day symposium the fialists demostrated their fly tyig skills at the PHWFF booth, ad met ad leared from the professioal tiers assembled for the evet. Fly Rod Buildig Over 650 participats took part i the aual Natioal Rod Buildig Program & Competitio represetig 17 PHWFF Regios ad 91 idividual PHWFF Programs. This aual competitio affords our participats the experiece of buildig their ow fly rods to further their physical ad metal rehabilitatio through the sport of fly fishig. It is a way for them to further exhibit the skills ad creativity garered from program classes, meetigs, ad idepedet study i a casual, fu program. Additioally, the rod buildig program icludes a competitio compoet as well, which gives participats the chace to wi prizes for their rod buildig abilities. These prizes may iclude the opportuity to further their rod buildig experiece by attedig a bamboo rod buildig school or atted a PHWFF Natioal fly fishig trip. Trips I 2016, 150 participats wet o 26 trips of a lifetime through the Natioal Trips Program. Destiatios icluded world class fishig locatios i Motaa, Michiga, Alaska, Maie, Florida, Colorado, North Carolia, Virgiia, Teessee ad eve iteratioal locatios i Caada. PHWFF Participats that atted Natioal Trips must first be active participats i their local PHWFF Program where they lear all the basics of fly fishig ad fly tyig at ogoig istructioal classes. A variety of approaches, both tried ad true ad ew ad uprove, were employed to raise fuds to support local programmatic activities. Through the tireless efforts of voluteers, fudraisig goals were met ad ofte exceeded. Supporters exteral to the orgaizatio cotiued to cotribute through third party fudraisig efforts affirmig that the PHWFF brad is recogizable ad edorsed. Natioal evets were repeat performaces featurig several logstadig fudraisig efforts, otably the 2-Fly Touramet, Mossy Creek Ivitatioal, Battle at Boxwood, Smoky Moutai Grad Slam Challege ad Healig o the Fly New York City. The 2016 2-Fly Touramet was the 10th aiversary of this aual evet ad we welcomed Tom Brokaw as the keyote speaker to mark this special occasio. Healig Saturday, a oe day atiowide PHWFF fudraisig evet was held for the first time i 2016. While this is a ew atiowide fudraisig edeavor for PHWFF, Healig Saturday is based o a cocept created ad successfully activated by PHWFF supporters ad voluteers i Missouri for three years. Healig Saturday first year efforts proved successful as the fudraisig goal was exceeded through the efforts of voluteers who held forty Healig Saturday evets all across the coutry.
