Michigan carries a four-game unbeaten streak (3-0-1) into the contest, while the Nittany Lions have lost eight in a row and are in search of their first points in Big Ten play. Penn State has lost one-goal games to nationally-ranked Boston College, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Union, and UMass-Lowell this season. Michigan head coach Red Berenson is approaching another milestone in his 30th season behind the bench with the Wolverines. Last Friday, Berenson tied Rick Comley for the No. 4 spot on the Division I all-time coaching wins list with his 783rd career win behind the bench at Michigan. Comley recorded 783 wins at Lake Superior State, Northern Michigan, and Michigan State from 1973-2011. Penn State head coach Guy Gadowsky is a familiar face for Red Berenson and many Michigan fans. Gadowsky was the head coach at former CCHA foe Alaska-Fairbanks for five seasons from 1999-2004 before moving on to become the head coach at Princeton. The Wolverines were 8-4 against Alaska-Fairbanks during Gadowsky s tenure. Gadowsky is also familiar face for junior forward Zach Hyman who was a verbal commit to Princeton before Gadowsky took the head coaching job at Penn State in April 2011. While this weekend will mark Michigan s first ever games against Penn State, the Wolverines have played a Division I team from the state of Pennsylvania before. Michigan earned a 7-6 win over the University of Pennsylvania on Dec. 29,1975, in a GLI Semifinal at Olympia Stadium. UPenn s program existed from 1965-1978. Today there are two Division I programs in the state of Pennsylvania, Robert Morris (program began in 2004-05) and Penn State. Since the end of the 2012-13 season, Michigan has been stellar in conference play, winning 11 of 14 games (11-2-1), including sweeps against Ohio State and Michigan State in Big Ten play this season and an 8-0-0 run in CCHA regular season play last year. 2013-14 MICHIGAN HOCKEY PENN STATE JOINS BIG TEN Thanks to the largest private gift in university history -- $88 million from Terrance M. and Kim Pegula -- Penn State elevated its club team to NCAA varsity status in 2012-13. This allowed the Big Ten Conference to add hockey to its portfolio; Big Ten rules allow for a conference championship when six institutions sponsor a program in any given sport. Now in the program s second year, head coach Guy Gadowsky leads a Nittany Lions team that features just five upperclassmen: four junior transfers and one senior in Michael McDonagh, the lone remaining player from Penn State s club hockey team. Despite Penn State s youth, the team has played well against difficult competition. Michigan has gotten off to strong starts this season, outscoring the opposition 18-9 in the first period through 22 games this season. The Wolverines have led or been tied after one period of play in 19 of 22 games thus far. Michigan has scored first in 12 of 22 contests and is 10-1-1 this season when scoring first this season. After last Friday s 3-1 win over the Badgers, Michigan is 10-0-0 this season when scoring three or more goals. Dating back to a power play goal in the first period of a 3-1 loss to Wisconsin on Jan. 11, Michigan is 0-for-18 on the man advantage in its last four-plus contests. The Wolverines have not gone more than four consecutive games without a power play goal this season. Michigan s current four-game unbeaten streak (3-0-1) coincides with a line shuffle that occured before the team s Jan. 23 game vs. Michigan State at Joe Louis Arena. The team s top three forward lines - Alex Guptill-JT Compher-Derek DeBlois, Boo Nieves-Andrew Copp-Phil Di Giuseppe, and Tyler Motte-Zach Hyman-Luke Moffatt, have remained intact over the past three games. Michigan s top line last weekend was the Tyler Motte-Zach Hyman-Luke Moffatt combination, which accounted for four of the Wolverines five goals in two games against Wisconsin. Motte (2g), Hyman (g, 2a) and Moffatt (g, a) helped Michigan take five of six points against Wisconsin last weekend at Yost Ice Arena. Goaltender Zach Nagelvoort has played well since making his career debut in net on Oct. 18 at New Hampshire. In 17 career appearances, Nagelvoort is 9-5-2 with a Big Ten leading 1.91 goals-against average (5th, NCAA) and.936 save percentage (4th, NCAA). Nagelvoort has made six straight starts in net for Michigan since Jan. 10. During the Wolverines recent four-game unbeaten stretch (3-0-1), Nagelvoort has a 1.47 GAA anda.950 Save %. Nagelvoort is the grandson of Dr. Paul W. Gikas, U-M professor emeritus of pathology and a former faculty representative (1982-88) for the U-M Athletic Department. Freshman forward JT Compher leads the team and is third among Big Ten freshmen with 21 points (9G, 12A) on the season. He leads all Big Ten freshmen with an average of 0.95 points per game. Compher s four-point outburst (2G, 2A) on Jan. 23 at Michigan State was the most by a Michigan player since Oct. 13, 2011, when David Wohlberg had four points (G, 3A) in a 10-3 win over St. Lawrence. Compher also had the the most points in a game by a Michigan freshman in over eight years. On Nov. 4, 2005, Andrew Cogliano recorded four points (2G, 2A) in an 8-5 win at Notre Dame.

Michigan has been ranked for 17 straight weeks in the top-15, starting with the Oct. 14, 2013 edition of the poll. Michigan joins No. 1 Minnesota and No. 12 Wisconsin to give the Big Ten three teams in the USCHO.com poll. Michigan has played 383 games as a top-5 team since the inception of the USCHO.com poll in 1995-96. The Wolverines have a record of 258-92-33 in those contests. Michigan spent 10 weeks in the top-5 this season. The Wolverines will play four more games against teams currently ranked in the top-20 of the USCHO.com poll, all against No. 1 Minnesota ( Feb. 14-15, March 14-15). The Wolverines are 4-3-3 against ranked teams this season. Michigan defeated No. 4 Boston College on Oct. 10, 3-1, in its home opener, went 1-0-1 against No. 13 New Hampshire on Oct. 18-19, earned a 2-1 win over No. 13 Boston University on Oct. 25, and tied No. 4 Ferris State, 1-1 on Dec. 11. The Wolverines fell 2-1 to No. 18 UMass-Lowell on Oct. 6, and dropped both games at No. 14 Wisconsin on Jan. 10-11, before going 1-0-1 against the Badgers last weekend. With another shorthanded goal in a 5-2 win over Michigan State on Jan. 24, JT Compher leads the Big Ten and moved into a tie for second in the nation with three shorthanded goals on the season. Sophomore forward Andrew Copp hasn t missed a beat after returning from the World Junior Championships in Malmo, Sweden in early January. Copp has produced 10 points (6G, 4A) in his last 11 games overall. Copp has points in 13 of Michigan s 22 games this season and the Wolverines are 9-2-2 in games where Copp registers a point. After a 2-1 win over Michigan State on Jan. 23, Michigan has played one-goal games in 11 of its first 22 contests this season and has a 8-3 record in those contests. The Wolverines were 4-6-0 in one-goal games in 2012-13. Michigan freshmen have had an impact in almost every game thus far for the Wolverines, as a member of the freshmen class had recorded a point in every game that Michigan has scored this season season. The 3-1 loss to Wisconsin on Jan. 11 marked the first time this season that a Michigan freshman failed to record a point in a game where Michigan scored at least one goal this season. With an assist from Michael Downing and a goal from Tyler Motte in last Saturday s shootout win over Wisconsin, a Michigan freshman has registered a point in 20 of U-M s 22 games so far this season. Motte scored a goal in both games of the series vs. Wisconsin. Freshman forwards JT Compher and Tyler Motte and defenseman Michael Downing have started every game for the Wolverines. Freshman defenseman Kevin Lohan had started every game for the Wolverines before sustaining a lower body injury on Nov. 1 against Michigan Tech. On Jan. 28, freshman forward JT Compher was named as Big Ten First Star of the Week. Compher has been honored twice this season, earning Second Star of the Week honors on Dec. 5). Compher had five points (3G, 2A) in two games against Michigan State last weekend and now leads the team and is tied for second among Big Ten freshmen with 21 points (9G, 12A) on the season. He leads the Big Ten with three shorthanded goals. Four other Wolverines have earned Big Ten weekly honors - Zach Nagelvoort has been honored four times with Big Ten weekly awards this season (10/27, 11/5, 11/26 and 12/17) -- twice as Big Ten First Star of the Week. Tyler Motte has been honored twice (10/20 and 11/26) and Mac Bennett (Dec. 5), and Andrew Copp (Oct. 13), have also been honored this season by the Big Ten.
