Owens, Combs and Gartrell, the basket tossing experts on the team, chalked up a total of 343 points in 10 games. Stojcich and Webster, two exceptional guards, didn't tally many digits, but their work on defense sparkled throughout the year. Owens, San Pedro forward, received the recommendation of every coach in the Marine circuit the only player to receive such recognition. Combs, Narbonne forward, who was closa to Owens in the balloting, led the Marine League in scoring with 118 points. COMMENT: Just refer to the All-San Fernando Yalley squad as the "Dynamiters," The boys all pack plenty of wallop in the basket. Banks, Familia, Jones. Nielson and Gullixsen make up the highest scoring all-league quintet in City Leagues history. The five boys totaled 704 points for the 10 game season, which would give a team average of better than 70 points per game! A good match would be to pit the All-San Fernando Valley high-scoring team against the strong All-Southern defensive unit. Banks, Familia and Jones were heavy scoring forwards, while Nielson. and Gullixson ( the latter also operated at forward ) were strong on tossing the casaba through the hoop. Gullixson, an able ball handler and tip-in artist, was the spark of the Eagle Rock team; while Nielson was a real ball hawk and an eagle eye. Jones, a fine team player and ball handler, did a lot of shooting, while his mythical teammates on the All-San Fernando Valley, Familia and Banks, were the No. 1 and No. 2 high-scorers of the City Leagues. Major Banks, Negro Van Nuys forward, was easily the San Fernando Valley League "player of the year." Major made the All-San Fernando Valley team for the third consecutive year. In San Fernando Valley League competition, Major scored 438 points in 30 contests during the past three years. * * * ALL-WESTERN LEAGUE... COMMENT: There was no doubt about the All- Western selections. Turnbull, Seick, HannMm, Spragins and Levin were definite standouts. Turnbull received the recommendation of every coach in the Western League, as did Seick. Spragins and Hannum missed \j one, while Will Levin poled three opponent coaches' votes. Turnbull led Western League scorers with 151 points Seick followed with 100. Turnbull was regarded one of the best players developed in the Western League in several years, while Spragins of L.A., and Seick of Univ. were considered among the best in the schools' history* Levin was an exceptional guard, desp&te his lack of size, while Hannum huge 6*5" center, a Junior, excelled at taking the ball off the back board, and at passing. *** "AN FERNANDO H O N O R A B L E MEN T 1 0 N *** WESTERN LEAGUE NEAL CORNELL,Eagle Rock, F RALPH WITT, Los Angeles, F HARRY CARTER,Canoga Pk.> F GEORGE TAIT, Fairfax, F DICK JOHNSON,Canoga Pk., F WESTERN JOE CALL, Fairfax. The All-Eastern is not a heavy-scoring quintet, Leon Levy being the only high-scorer on the squad, However, the team.makes up a strong defensive unit, and would compare with any other all-star aggregation in the city in that respect.
