ROAD TO THE SOCON CHAMPIONSHIP QUARTERFINAL MATCH-UP THURSDAY, NOV. 3 #4 WESTERN CAROLINA... 2 #5 COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON... 1 Greenville, S.C. - Sophomore Heather Dittmer s goal seven and a half minutes into the first overtime session lifted the Western Carolina Catamounts to a 2-1 win over the fifth-seeded College of Charleston Cougars Thursday afternoon in the opening round of the 2005 Southern Conference Women s Soccer Championship. After receiving a pass from senior Marie Nicolini, who was pressed into service along Western s front line from her normal defensive position, Dittmer turned and fired a shot on the Cougar net from 23 yards out. The ball careened off a CofC defender and was catapulted on goal. Cougar keeper Erin Smith jumped to make the save, but her attempted deflection ricocheted off her hand, falling in the net for the game-winner. We came out flat in the first half. I told the players that I was willing to play with nine people on the field if I had to, just as long as those nine wanted to play, said first-year head coach Tammy DeCesare. I think it finally hit the seniors at halftime and all six of them turned it up a notch. Fourth-seeded Western Carolina improved to 16-5-0 overall, tying the school record for wins in a single season. The Catamounts advance to face the top-seeded Davidson Wildcats at 5:00 on Friday evening in the semifinals of the SoCon Championship. Davidson opened tournament play with a 2-0 victory over Elon in the opener of the tournament. Western fell behind early as the College of Charleston netted its first goal in the last two meetings between the two teams. Junior Teryn Schuetz played a through ball to herself, splitting two Catamount defenders. She played a cross in front of the goal mouth, which was scored by senior Kristin Rhyne to push the Cougars ahead, 1-0. The Cats had a couple of scoring opportunities during the first half, including shots by sophomore Lauren Atkinson and senior Megan Chambers, with the best chance coming as senior Natasha Moore uncorked a blast from the top of the box which just sailed over the cross bar high. All of Western s four shots, two of which were on goal, were kept out of the net as the Catamounts trailed at the half, 1-0. Early in the second half, Western turned up the offensive pressure, peppering the Cougar net to outshoot Charleston 8-0 over the first 20 minutes. The increased intensity paid off at the 63:25 as Chambers scored on her fifth shot of the contest, bouncing one past the Cougar keeper from 30 yards out. Davis nearly put Western ahead with a shot from inside the box with 20 minutes showing on the game clock, but CofC s keeper Erin Smith made a sliding stop and the defense cleared to end the threat. Despite out shooting the College 20-5, including a 13-to-1 advantage in the second stanza alone, the game ended in a one-all tie and an overtime session, setting up Dittmer s heroics. Junior goal keeper Alesha Row recorded the win, only needing to make one save in the contest. SEMIFINAL MATCH-UP FRIDAY, NOV. 4 #1 DAVIDSON... 0 #4 WESTERN CAROLINA... 2 Greenville, S.C. - Facing off for the second-time in six days, the Western Carolina Catamounts avenged a home loss on senior day with a 2-0, shutout win over the top-seeded Davidson Wildcats Friday afternoon in semifinal action at the 2005 Southern Conference Women s Soccer Championships. Western advances to the SoCon Championship match for the second-time in school history on Sunday afternoon to face Furman, who defeated UNC Greensboro in the semifinals, at 1:00 pm. After an early flurry for the Catamounts, Davidson, who ran through the SoCon unbeaten in the regular season, asserted itself with back-to-back scoring opportunities, including a free kick just outside the Western goal box. The ball was played back, and then fired on goal where junior Alesha Row made the stop. Western countered less than five minutes later after being awarded a free kick just inside the Davidson goal box, but Thursday s hero, sophomore Heather Dittmer s offering was blocked by the Wildcat defense. Late in the first half, Western scratched the scoreboard first, taking a 1-0 advantage with a score at the 36:15 mark. A throw in by junior Keevy Harris was played into the box in front of the Wildcat goal where sophomore Heather Dittmer bounced it to junior Meghan Reilly, In traffic, Reilly fired on goal, finding the back of the net for her second tally of the year to give WCU the 1-0 halftime advantage. Davidson s Kara Koehrn, the leading scorer in the SoCon this season had three solid opportunities in the second half to knot the game, but two attempts sailed high with Row making a two-handed, grabbing save on the third. After playing a large portion of the second half in the defensive end, Western notched an insurance goal just inside of 10 minutes to play in regulation. On the second-consecutive corner kick by sophomore Lauren Atkinson, Reilly tapped a ball towards the goal where senior Natalie Turgeon dropped it behind the Wildcat keeper to give the Catamounts the two-goal advantage. Reilly was credited with the assist, her third point of the match. Sensing the urgency in the contest, Davidson turned up the wick down the stretch, blasting multiple shots from the offensive zone, with the final attempt scooped by Row as the final seconds ticked away. In all, the junior keeper from Fargo, N.D., made seven saves en route to securing her 12th shutout of the year, and 16th of her career. ROAD TO THE SOCON CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL MATCH-UP SUNDAY, NOV. 6 #2 FURMAN... 0 #4 WESTERN CAROLINA... 2 Greenville, S.C. - Early in the second half, Western Carolina s Heather Dittmer took a Natalie Turgeon pass and headed the ball past Furman s keeper to lift the Catamounts to a 1-0 victory over the Lady Paladins en route to winnning the 2005 Southern Conference Championship at Furman s Stone Stadium. With the win, the Catamounts earn the conference s automatic bid and first ever trip to the NCAA College Cup Championships. Western, who is just in its seventh year of existence, claim its second SoCon championship. In 2001, the Catamounts were the top seed in the SoCon tournament and regular-season champions, only to fall 2-1 in double overtime in that year s SoCon tournament final. Dittmer and Catamount keeper Alesha Row, who had seven saves in the championship game, headlined Western s selections to the All-Tournament Team. Dittmer was the tournament leader in points, while tournament MVP Row tallied 15 saves in the three games, earning two shutout victories to give her 13 for the year. Also making the All- Tournament team were Casey Davis, Arlan Whittle an Meghan Reilly. Western Carolina garnered the game-winning goal at the 47:43 mark when Turgeon found Dittmer just inside the six-yard box. Dittmer took advantage of the Turgeon cross, placing the ball in the back of the net with a header between the pipes after Furman s first-team All-SoCon goalkeeper Andie Hinshaw was caught out of position. It was Dittmer s seventh goal of the 2005 season. After the game Row was understandably shaken and awestruck by the outcome, articulating how much the win meant to the media while her teammates took the Western Carolina flag hanging atop the hilltop at Stone Stadium and paraded around the stadium. I am speechless, noted Row. Going to (the NCAA Tournament) is such a thrill. I cannot say enough about what we did. Furman did have their chances in the contest. The first real chance for the Paladins came in the 29th-minute when Emily Krankowski won the ball at midfield and promptly made her way into the Western Carolina box unmarked. Row was up to the challenge, though, exerting herself towards Kranskowski and making a brilliant sprawling sliding save and thwarting Furman s best chance in the entire contest. Furman continuously tried to find the equalizer in the game, particularly in the final 15 minutes, but could not find their way despite out shooting the Catamounts 14-to-7. Western Carolina becomes the fourth team to be SoCon champion, joining Davidson, Furman and UNC Greensboro, and the first four seed to win the tournament. Prior to Western s Cinderella win on Sunday no team seeded below the third slot had ever won the SoCon Women s Soccer Championship. Catamounts head coach Tammy DeCesare becomes the second SoCon coach to win the championship in their first year at the helm of their program. Eddie Radwanski accomplished the feat first in 2001, ironically defeating Wetern in double overttime one year after the Spartans won the championship with Jack Poland in charge. Western Carolina will learn their foe in the NCAA Tournament at 5 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 7. The NCAA College Cup selection show will be telecast on ESPN News. 2005 Southern Conference All-Tournament Team Tournament MVP Alesha Row, Western Carolina Arlan Whittle, Western Carolina Meghan Reilly, Western Carolina Casey Davis, Western Carolina Heather Dittmer, Western Carolina Kara Koehrn, Davidson Chloe King, Davidson Erin Sanders, Furman Andie Hinshaw, Furman Nicky Darling, Furman Tyson Davis, UNC Greensboro Dacia Beachum, UNC Greensboro Above, Western Carolina goal keeper Alesha Row is presented with the 2005 SoCon Championship MVP award... Western Carolina DID YOU KNOW...? The Western Carolina women s basketball team was the Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (CIAW) National Runner-Up in the 1968-69 season and finished fourth the following year in the tournament. In 1971, Western Carolina hosted the National Women s Intercollegiate Basketball Tournament in Reid Gymnasium. WCU also hosted an Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) Southern Region II Tournament in 1975-76, making a total of three apperances in the AIAW tournament, which was the predecessor of the NCAA for women s collegiate athletics. The all-time leading scorer in Western Carolina women s basketball history is Jayne Arledge -- she is the niece of the late Roone Arledge, a pioneer in the field of televison journalism and creator of Monday Night Football, 20/20, and Nightline. Western s Ronnie Carr made the first 3-point basket in NCAA history. To mark the event, during both of ESPN2 s college basketball games on November 29, 2004 the network featured Carr, who sank that first 3-pointer on Nov. 29, 1980. The 2005-06 season marks the 25th anniversary of the historic shot which has revolutionized the game of basketball. Carr s historic shot came in Western s 77-70 victory over Middle Tennessee State and the ball he used is on display at the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. The shot was made from the left corner of Reid Gym Western s facility at the time with 16:09 left in the first half (7:06 pm). Ironically, Carr wore number 22 and the 3-point arc that first year was 22 feet, instead of the now 19-feet, nine-inches. Carr had the number 22 his freshman season and the 3-point shot did not debut until his sophomore year. Another interesting side note, while Carr made the first 3-pointer in NCAA history, Western Carolina actually played a game one day prior (Nov. 28), defeating the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, 88-77, in Atlanta. However, Carr s historic shot had to wait one until the following day since the Southern Conference was the only league sanctioned by the NCAA to use the 3-point shot. Carr only took 39 3-pointers during the 1980-81 season, making 15 and earning first team All-Southern Conference honors. As a junior the following year, Carr only took 11 treys, making eight. However, the 1981-82 season, which would be his final year at Western, Carr still led the SoCon in scoring and earned first team All-SoCon honors for a second time. While Carr did not utilize the 3-point shot much, Western led the SoCon in 3-pointers made and attempted during the four-year NCAA/SoCon experiment, making 182-of-450 treys (.404) over the time span. Carr would not be able to play his senior year after having a serious car accident prior to the season s start. However, Carr served as a student assistant coach that season and would go on to receive Most Courageous Athlete award, given by the United States Basketball Writers Association. Despite the accident, Carr was still selected in the 10th round of the NBA draft by the Atlanta Hawks. Western Carolina was the first predominately white university or college in the South to recruit and sign African-American athletes. Western s Henry Logan, the basketball program s all-time leader in points (3,290) and assists (1,037), was the first to break the color barrier in the South, starting his career in 1964-65. In the fall of 1965, Western s Keith Elliott became the first African-American football player in the South to break the color barrier. Western Carolina boasts several former student-athletes now playing at the professional level: NBA (Kevin Martin with Sacramento - pictured); NFL (Brad Hoover with Carolina - pictured, three-time Super Bowl winner, David Patten, now with Washington, Willie Williams with Pittsburgh, and Nick McNeil with Washington).
